“Sam & Kate” is a family affair, which is essentially the entire conceit for the film’s existence. Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek play Bill and Tina, while Jake Hoffman and Schuyler Fisk (Spacek’s daughter with production designer Jack Fisk) play their respective kids, Sam and Kate. It’s the story of young adults and their challenging relationships with their quirky aging parents, fumbling toward a kind of grace in spite of their pasts.
The appeal of the film is its gimmick: watching two legendary actors who defined New Hollywood in the 1970s playing parents to their own children and the unique chemistry that comes from that. It also helps that the kids look a lot like their parents.
But Hoffman and Fisk aren’t carbon copies of their parents, and neither have their careers. Both have been acting since childhood, but Hoffman has gone the indie route, having directed the feature “Asthma,...

"Been a long time since I've been out like this." Vertical Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for a family comedy titled Sam & Kate, opening in select theaters this November. Described as a "life-affirming family dramedy" starring Oscar winners Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek - truly a family affair, art imitates life with the father / son casting of Dustin & Jake Hoffman and the mother / daughter casting of Sissy & Schuyler Fisk. When Sam (the younger Hoffman) returns to his small town to care for his ailing father, he soon finds himself falling for a local woman, Kate. Simultaneously, his father begins finding love with Kate's mother. But both couples must confront their past in order to make their new love work for the future. The cast also includes Henry Thomas, Tyler Labine, Elizabeth Faith Ludlow, Dylan McNamara, and Elizabeth Becka. This looks sweet and fun, but also a film you'll forget as soon as it's over.

Sisters Vivian (Ani Mesa) and Marian (Alessandra Mesa) haven’t seen each other for six years. Vivian is conservatively dressed, happily married, respectably employed. Marian is bleached-blond, leather jacketed, scratching a living as a rock singer, running from something, which brings her back to her home town and Vivian’s door. There she quickly makes herself at home, an unwelcome guest as far as husband Michael (Jake Hoffman) is concerned, slouching around working on her music and making no contribution either to housework or bills. Despite their apparent differences, however, there’s a close bond between the two women, and this animosity sees Vivian increasingly sympathetic to her sister, increasingly alert to all the little frustrations which have been building up in her relationship.

"I'm worried about her." Factory 25 has revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled Superior, which initially premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival last year. This grainy, retro indie is about a woman on the run who returns to her hometown to hide out with her identical twin sister, Vivian, which alters the trajectory of both their lives. Described as an "Almodovarian psychodrama" with touches of Lynch and De Palma and 80s psychological thriller cinema. She realizes that she can pass as her sister and gets into even more trouble pretending to be her while trying to stay out of any trouble. Starring Alessandra Mesa and Anamari Mesa as sisters Marian and Vivian; along with Pico Alexander, Jake Hoffman, and Stanley Simons. This has a very specific pastiche that will some will be very attracted to, but for others it may just be grueling. But there's intricacy in...

The Mean Street for this Martin Scorsese picture is Wall Street. His show pushes the hard- R rating to depict the wild life and times of a stock-selling pirate who bilks investors for millions that fuel a ten-year spree of obscene consumption, Bad Boy decadence and absurd levels of sex and drug abuse. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Jordan Belfort beautifully, surrounded by a corps of terrific players (including Margot Robbie) given clear characters by Terence Winter and superb direction by Scorsese. The surprise is that the show is not a facile take-down of the American Dream. Screaming greed is the lure and the joke’s on us. Co-starring Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Kyle Chandler, Rob Reiner, Jon Bernthal, Jon Favreau, Jean Dujardin and Joanna Lumley.

A producer on “Rust” is backing another independent film, “Sam & Kate,” starring Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek, which is set to begin production early next year.
Ryan Smith is helping to finance the film, which is set to shoot in Thomasville, Ga., starting in mid-February. A source close to the project said that Smith is putting in a portion of the financing and will get an executive producer credit, but that he and his company will not be involved in physical production.
Smith, his business partner Allen Cheney, and their company, Thomasville Pictures, have been named in two lawsuits stemming from the fatal shooting on the set of “Rust” last month in New Mexico. One of the themes running through the 2021 North Bend Film Festival was Identity. There were so many films that focused on the varying ways that one can become oneself. Queer Identity, Immigrant Identity, finding your adult identity as you come of age. One of the more haunting explorations of identity came with Erin Vassilopoulos’ haunting film Superior.

With her frayed blonde hair and moody coal-black eye makeup, rock band singer Marian (Alessandra Mesa) doesn’t immediately appear to resemble her identical twin sister. Practically a Stepford wife with her demure manner and neat brown bob, Vivian (Ani Mesa) lives with her loser husband (Jake Hoffman) in the same house the sisters grew up in. She’s stifled by her domestic routine of cleaning, gardening, and grocery shopping, but too meek to do anything about it—perhaps because that audacious, thrill-seeking part of her has gone missing, quite literally, with the disappearance of her other half some six years ago.

Back at the Sundance Film Festival in 2015, director Erin Vassilopoulos debuted the short film “Superior” starring twin sisters Alessandra Mesa and Ani Mesa. The project, a nominee for the Short Film Grand Jury Prize, focused on two sisters living in upstate New York who experience an awakening of self when a stranger comes to stay with them and their father for a brief spell.
The film also sparked a creative relationship among its director and stars. Six years later, the trio is back at Sundance with a continuation, of sorts, of the original short. Also called “Superior,” the new film takes place over one transformative Halloween weekend in the late 1980s and catches up with twin sisters Vivian (Ani Mesa) and Marion (Alessandra Mesa) after years of estrangement.

Stars: Alicia Silverstone, Tom Everett Scott, Jake Hoffman, Mathilde Ollivier | Written and Directed by Amy Miller Gross
Changing lanes for a minute in my viewing pleasure, I decided to sit down and a watch a rom-com with my wife and it has to be said – with none other than Alicia Silverstone and Tom Everett Scott starring – it felt like my 90s nostalgia none was going to be tickled. We were also optimistic that with the title of Sister of the Groom we may get some Father of the Bride vibes… We did not! Though thankfully Tom Everett Scott did enough in the first 10 minutes of this film to kept me watching to the end.
I do find myself wondering how I actually feel about the film though – its very much a middle-of-the-road rom-com, with Alicia Silverstone doing her best Drew Barrymore homage in Sister of the Groom, aka The Pleasure of Your Presence.

"I want to live in the moment, and be free!" Saban Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie wedding comedy titled Sister of the Groom, from filmmaker Amy Miller Gross. Everyone ready for this marriage mayhem? Liam is set to wed a younger French girl, Clemence, in the Hamptons. His sister, Audrey, and her husband, Ethan, drive to attend, yet Audrey's motives are likely to stop the wedding. Audrey and Clemence do not get along, as Clemence, a perfect gorgeous French woman, reminds Audrey of her own imperfections. Feelings of jealousy due to her own lost opportunities, uncertainty of herself, and 40 years of choices, could explode and scorch her new sister-in-law. Oh boy. Starring Alicia Silverstone, Tom Everett Scott, Jake Hoffman, and Mathilde Ollivier. This looks like the kind of goofy comedies Hollywood used to make, but doesn't make anymore, probably for the better. It seems to be...

Though A24’s “Uncut Gems” features retired Celtics player Kevin Garnett in his acting debut, avid basketball fan and star Adam Sandler said he never actually had the chance to shoot hoops with the famed center during filming.
“But he taught me two good tips and I’m not going to tell you what they are, but I hope I see you out on the court and I’m going to destroy you,” Sandler cracked to Variety on Wednesday night at the film’s Los Angeles premiere at the ArcLight Cinerama Dome in Hollywood.
Basketball played a central role in the both the film’s story and development; Sandler’s first meeting with the writer/director brother duo Josh and Benny Safdie took place on the court. “We played a lot of basketball during this shoot,“ Sandler said. “Josh has long arms. He lucked out and blocked me one time.

You can never quite predict what will happen when parents intrude on their kids’ lives, no matter what their ages — a fact of life that has inspired a rich subgenre of such films as “She’s Out of Control,” “Mother,” “The Guilt Trip” and last year’s surprisingly sweet “Blockers.” Based on the novel “Whatever Makes You Happy” by William Sutcliffe, director Cindy Chupack’s “Otherhood” follows three meddling mothers who travel to New York City to surprise their wayward adult sons with an unexpected visit, offers a welcome female-centered take on empty-nester syndrome in the process. Part guilt trip, part gentle ode to smothering mothers, it could be called “Why Don’t You Call Your Mother More Often: The Movie.” Despite a shaky third act, Chupack and company find great success by keeping the shenanigans grounded in a sense of pathos.

The centuries-old adage no good deed goes unpunished is a common refrain for star music manager Scott Rodger of late. "We're not on vacation, we are on a mission! We are going to reconnect with our sons." There's life beyond motherhood! Netflix has debuted the official trailer for a comedy titled Otherhood, based on the novel of the same name written by William Sutcliffe. The effervescent film tells the story of three mothers who are long-time friends and empty nesters. They decide to drive to New York City to reconnect with their adult sons. In the process, they realize their sons are not the only ones whose lives need to change. "A journey of rediscovery that forces these women to redefine their relationships with their children, friends, spouses and most importantly, themselves." The excellent ensemble cast features Angela Bassett, Patricia Arquette, Felicity Huffman, Jake Hoffman, Jake Lacy, Sinqua Walls, and Heidi Gardner. This looks fun, but we've seen this kind of story plenty of times (although usually with men). Ladies love to live free!

Danny Sangra isn’t the first filmmaker to make the jump from commercials to feature-length films, but he makes a pretty good case for the transition. Over the past few years, Sangra has amassed an impressive library of short films in addition to advertisements that are as distinct from one another as they are emblematic of his style.
That style earned him loyal audiences online, particularly with the more discerning Vimeo crowd, the platform that released “Goldbricks In Bloom” through its VOD service. Sangra’s shorts often earn the coveted “Vimeo Staff Pick” distinction, and they partnered with OneFifty to release the film digitally, while Emerging Pictures supported a small national theatrical release.
While not quite the cinderella story of A24’s “Swiss Army Man” directors the Daniels, who also started making music videos and digital content, it’s not bad for a first feature.

No, youth of America, parmesan is not a vegan food item. But damn if that doesn’t stop Zosia Mamet from asking for them from a presumably beleaguered bodega owner in a very funny deleted scene from Danny Sangra’s “Goldbricks in Bloom.” Mamet toplines the feature, which smartly and sharply upbraids some of the worst bits of current millennial culture. Kale chips? Just the tip of the iceberg.
The film is Sangra’s feature debut, and is described as “a social satire that explores what it means to be an artist today by interweaving the story of a self-obsessed group of disenchanted young creatives with the mythic rise and fall of a New York painter.” Over the past six years, Sangra has made over 30 short films, a number of which feature interconnected characters and stories. “Goldbricks” mines that for more fun, as it pushes together some of his previous creations.
