Chad Hartigan’s clever sci-fi drama “Little Fish” sums its chief concerns in one grim line: “When your disaster is everyone’s disaster, how do you grieve?” A change of pace for the director of “Morris From America,” Hartigan’s weighty romance takes place in world afflicted by memory loss, with all the devastating results implied by that premise. , “Little Fish” plays as both an effective metaphor for Alzheimer’s, and the disintegration of a relationship without closure or reason.
Lead couple Emma (Olivia Cooke) and Jude (Jack O’Connell) are battling to recover their memories of each other as Jude succumbs to the affliction, which so far leaves Emma untouched. They aren’t the only ones working through that problem: In “Little Fish,” everyone in the world is collectively losing their memory to something called Nia, or “neuroinflammatory affliction.” It’s first seen in victims who suddenly forget who they...

AMC could be taking a trip to Christmasland in the future. Back in December of 2015, it was revealed that the network was considering developing a TV series based on Joe Hill's supernatural novel NOS4A2, and today AMC announced that it has opened a writers' room for NOS4A2 and two other projects.
Led by Jami O'Brien (Hell on Wheels), who, along with Joe Hill, will serve as an executive producer on the series should it move forward, NOS4A2 is now being developed in the aforementioned writers' room.
O'Brien and her team will work together to write scripts for multiple episodes and a framework for the first season, and if AMC likes the concept and story that O'Brien and company come up with, NOS4A2 could be ordered to series.

A24’s drama – and the distributor itself – enjoyed a huge Saturday afternoon at Film Independent’s 32nd annual Spirit Awards ceremony on the beach in Santa Monica.
Best feature winner Moonlight won six awards and took the plaudits on an afternoon that also sends best director winner Barry Jenkins to Sunday’s Oscars in high spirits and recognised Friday night’s César winner Isabelle Huppert for Elle and Casey Affleck for Manchester By The Sea in the lead acting categories.
Besides best feature and director, Moonlight won screenplay for Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney, cinematography for James Laxton, and editing for Joi McMillon and Nat Sanders.
The film started the ceremony as joint frontrunner with American Honey on six nominations and converted all six, including the previously announced Robert Altman Award. American Honey went away empty-handed.

As the definition of an independent film has shifted with the ever-expanding budget divide in American filmmaking — particularly Hollywood cutting back on its mid-range projects — when it comes time for awards season, it’s often only the highest profile of “indie films” that get recognized. While we do our best to recognize the films that often get unfortunately, a new awards has launched that honors the best of truly independent American cinema, featuring films all under a $1 million budget.

I'm so glad that Barry Jenkins' "Moonlight" is getting lots of love from the Independent Spirit Awards. It is raw, honest, pure! One of my favorite films of the year! I also enjoyed "Jackie" but largely due to Natalie Portman's wonderful performance. Oh, I'm also loving "Manchester by the Sea!" I interviewed the cast at the Toronto International Film Festival, check it out here. Affleck and Hedges received nominations from the film among its many accomplishments. And I love Ruth Negga from "Loving!" She's nominated for Best Female Lead. Check out my interview with the actress where I told her we'll all remember her name by year's end!

Embers, Claire Carré's philosophical science fiction film, added to its awards caché this past weekend at the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, winning the Asteroide Award. I was proud to be on the jury, along with Pedro Suoto from MotelX, and film critic Mauro Gervasini. In his review, Ben Umstead described it as a film "that reaches deep inside humanity, inside our collective soul (a collective history beyond memory), searching for that basic instinct, that inherent self beyond self." The physical award is created each year by a local artist, making it even more memorable for the filmmakers. Other notable award winners include Under the Shadow, which was given the Web Critics award from Italian film journalists; Sum of Histories, which won the Méliès d'Argent for Best...

There are few greater pleasures than discovering a talented filmmaker at the start of what promises to be a dynamic career in storytelling. Claire Carré is one of those filmmakers, and her directorail debut Embers is one of those films. A Science Fiction yarn that charts the lives of a group of survivors in a world post-memory, Embers releases today on iTunes and VOD platforms stateside. But for those in Los Angeles, it gets a full theatrical release this Friday, August 5th. With richly varied production design and costuming I certainly think Embers warrants the big screen experience. As such, ScreenAnarchy is partnering with Slamdance Presents to giveaway two pairs of tickets for Opening Night and the Big Ideas, Small Budget: Indie Sci-fi panel which...

Among the numerous post-apocalyptic stories in recent years, there are only a handful that tackle the feeling of disconnection and disorientation that comes with living in confused chaos. One of these is Claire Carré’s debut film “Embers,” a film about a group of survivors struggling with sustained short-term memory loss after a global neurological epidemic.

At the center of the film is the romance between a wandering couple (Jason Ritter and Iva Gocheva) who wake up every morning unfamiliar with their surroundings and unsure of who they are. Other characters include a wealthy father and daughter stuck in an underground bunker where they retain their memory, a scientist who can’t comprehend his own mental state, a young boy drifting through the woods, and a demented man who can’t figure out why he’s filled with rage.

Science Fiction with vision -- and done on a budget no less -- is one of our favorite kinds of cinema to give attention to here at TwitchFilm. Claire Carré's feature debut Embers is exactly one of those indie sci-fi darlings. Not only do we think this, but so do the folks at Slamdance and The Orchard who have struck a joint deal to bringCarré's vision of a world post-memory to big and small screens, alike. Slamdance Presents, the theatrical release wing of the Diy film festival, will be brining Embers to Arclight Hollywood on August 5th, for a week long run of screenings and extra-special Q&As, while The Orcahrd will be doing a VOD day-and-date release. In Claire Carré's accomplished feature debut, we're presented a post-apocalyptic world in which the few remaining inhabitants struggle for survival amidst a mass epidemic of reoccurring amnesia. The entire population are only able to recall events which happen to them during a single day, completely forgetting who and where they are whenever they wake from sleep.
The film is structured as a series of interconnected vignettes, revisiting multiple characters over the course of several days, and providing a glimpse into their strange, unhappy lives, and how they manage to cope. It's a low-key little film, meditative and slow-burning, but containing moments of pathos, humour, tension and occasional violence, and like the best films of its kind, it lingers in the mind long after view [Continued ...]...

Nabbing Best Actress, Screenplay, Breakthrough Director and Feature noms, Marielle Heller’s Diary of a Teenage Girl leads all Gotham Award nominations with four, while Carol is technically tied with a foursome of mentions as well. With a pre-win (Directors Tribute) accompanied by a trio of noms in the Best Feature, Screenplay and Actress categories, Todd Haynes’ drama will likely find xeroxed nom mentions for both the Indie Spirits and Oscars.
While Rick Alverson’s Entertainment and Sebastien Silva’s Nasty Baby are noticeably absent in what some consider a backhanded compliment of a ceremony, the noms for this year’s Gothams do have some wholeheartedly merited double nom mentions for the Safdie Bros.’ Heaven Knows What, Sean Baker’s Tangerine, Bill Pohlad’s Love & Mercy and Josh Mond’s James White. We are excited to get a look at the feature debut from by Claire Carré Embers which made its world premiere at the Oldenburg Film Fest last month and gets its North American bow tomorrow at the Chicago International Film Fest. Ahead of that premiere, we've got the exclusive debut of the film's beautiful poster from artist/filmmaker/all around good guy Yen Tan. The film is an apocalyptic ensemble that stars Jason Ritter and deals heavily in the subject of amnesia. The world as we know it has been forgotten. A decade after a global epidemic, those who remain suffer from lasting effects of the virus - retrograde and anterograde amnesia. The survivors navigate a decaying landscape, unable to recall the past or create new memories....

We’ve been tracking the development of Claire Carré‘s directorial debut since it successfully launched its Kickstarter campaign in late 2013 (it was subsequently selected as one of ten narrative projects in the 2014 Ifp Independent Filmmaker Lab) and finally Embers is ready to ride the festival circuit with the Oldenburg Int. Film Fest announcing that the sci-fi drama is among its selections for the 22nd edition.

As we head into December, awards season is well under way, and though we’ll have to wait until the spring for really big fish like the Oscars and the Golden Globes, this month has a respectable number of ceremonies of its own. Last night, celebrities gathered at Cipriani Wall Street in New York for the 2014 Gotham Independent Film Awards.
It was a long, casual ceremony for those in attendance, but when the night finally wrapped up, few could argue with the results. Birdman spread its wings and took home Best Feature, while Michael Keaton nabbed Best Actor for his revelatory role in the Alejandro G. Iñárritu-directed film. Meanwhile, Julianne Moore continued her unstoppable march to the Oscars, receiving Best Actress for her devastating work as an Alzheimer’s-afflicted linguistics professor in Still Alice. And Laura Poitras was awarded Best Documentary Feature for her eye-opening Edward Snowden doc Citizenfour.

Deemed as his career best, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood leads all nominations for the 24th Gotham Independent Film Awards with winks in the Best Feature, Best Actor (Ethan Hawke), Best Actress (Patricia Arquette) and Breakthrough Actor (Ellar Coltrane) while Birdman, Nightcrawler, Under the Skin and Dear White People technically place second with two noms a piece in the five possible categories. Arguably 2014′s most prolific indie film in Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash failed to move the five-critic panels in the Best Film category and sans a Best Supporting category, means Miles Teller receives Best Award nom but J.K. The Independent Filmmaker Project officially fired the starting gun on the film awards season as always this morning with the announcement of this year's Gotham Awards nominees. Unsurprisingly, the most high-profile indie in the race — "Boyhood" — drew the most nominations with a whopping four mentions, including Best Feature. That's extremely high for the Gotham Awards and it sends IFC's campaign sailing into the season with a huge burst of wind. Speaking of revving the campaign engine on an early year release, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" landed in the Best Feature category. Two years ago Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" won that category but still didn't end up with a Best Picture Oscar nomination. Can Fox Searchlight find better luck? And speaking of Searchlight, "Birdman" landed Best Feature and Best Actor nominations. Fully expected. Filling out the Best Feature category was Ira Sachs' beautiful "Love is Strange" and Jonathan Glazer...
