Get ready to learn how to say “what the hell just happened?” in Japanese. “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” one of the most acclaimed — and straight up weird — works in anime history, will be available to stream globally for the first time when it debuts on Netflix in 2019.
The announcement came during Netflix’s Anime Lineup Presentation, held Tuesday in Tokyo.
Produced by Gainax and Tatsunoko Production, “Neon Genesis Evangelion” originally aired on TV Tokyo from October 1995 to March 1996. Set in the far-future year of 2015, the show tracks a war between humans, defended by pilots who control giant bio-machines called “Evangelions,” and aliens called “Angels.” Drawing imagery from Kabbalah, Christianity and Judaism, “Evangelion” is particularly celebrated — and notorious — for its insane ending. The uninitiated can watch the teaser trailer above.

During their Anime Lineup Presentation event at the Akiba Theatre in Tokyo today, Netflix unveiled their slate of Anime programming for 2019.
The new lineup is an expansion of their successful original Anime programming which includes Devilman Crybaby and B: the Beginning. Netflix announced that they would be revisiting some of the most beloved stories that many Anime fans already know and love, including Ultraman, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac.
The news comes after Netflix made their first-ever Asia showcase earlier this month where they announced the addition of Pacific Rim, Altered Carbon, Cagaster of an Insect Cage, Yasuke, and Trese to their anime slate. The slate continues Netflix’s global reach when it comes to original content, telling stories from Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and South Korea.

Netflix is going all in on anime as they add the eagerly anticipated Godzilla movie and 12 other projects to their slate of upcoming programming. Deadline says in addition to the series the network is also overseeing the development of Cannon Busters, Devilman Crybaby, B: The Beginning, and Knights Of The Zodiac: Saint Seiya just to name a few.
The Godzilla and Saint Seiya grabs really show that Netflix is working to grab their Western audience who loves anime, but with competitors like Crunchyroll and Funimation (who was recently bought by Sony) in the mix, who knows if they'll be able to compete on that front. Time will tell, but the addition of so many projects seems promising for the future of anime on the platform.
Below you'll find details photos and some trailer for the anime projects that Netflix has picked up!

I love me some anime. I have since I was a teen. My love and appreciation for the genre has only grown and as much as I love it, I’m often disappointed by the lack of feature films that come out. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good series, but sometimes I don’t want to commit months to watching something. Sometimes I just want a quick fix. Anchor Bay and Manga Entertainment have provided me a much need anime injection of goodness with “Redline” and “First Squad.” Starting with “First Squad: The Moment of Truth” is an interesting project to say the least. Director Yoshiharu Ashino follows in the line of East/West collaborations like “Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust,” “Highlander: The Search For Vengeance,” and even “Afro Samurai,” but where as those were U.S./Japanese collaborations, this is a Japanese/Russian one. Yeah I said Russian.

It’s been a while since we posted the trailers for the incredible looking anime “First Squad: The Moment of Truth”, back when Anchor Bay first announced that they had acquired the film for domestic consumption. Sony have announced the UK Blu-ray release of two new anime movies, both of which are set to debut on Boxing Day. First Squad, from acclaimed animation studio Studio 4°C, creators of the thrilling The Animatrix and Halo: Legends, tells the story of a 14-year-old girl with psychic powers who must travel to another world to bring back her team and stop a 700-year-old ghost from leading the Nazis to victory in World War II; and Legend of the Millenium Dragon (aka Onigamiden), from Studio Pierrot, creators of the classic Naruto and Bleach films, which sees a teenage boy travels 1,200 years back in time into an epic and ancient battle.

“First Squad: The Moment of Truth” is a Japanese anime about Russians set during World War II, with Nazis as the bad guys trying to do that whole undead army raising thing that they are wont to do. Plus, did I mention Russian kids with superpowers? Yup, sounds like a recipe for carnage to me, too. The fun kind. The movie was written by Misha Shprits and Aljosha Klimov, and is directed by Yoshiharu Ashino, whose credits include ”Pokemon: Jirachi-Wish Maker” and “Piglet’s Big Movie”. I was looking forward to seeing this unusual co-production from Russia, Japan and Canada! Everything about this project sounds like a lot of fun. It has a wild soundtrack by DJ Krush, beautiful artwork by 4C (the company that also did the animation for “Tekkonkinkreet” and “The Animatrix”) and a crazy story with occult Nazis and Russian soldiers. What more can you ask for? It had its international premiere as part of the big Manga Night on the Piazza Grande, that started off with Yoshiyuki Tomino’s “Mobil Suit Gundam 1” from 1981. After 2 ½ hours of old school animation, I was pretty anxious to finally see Yoshiharu Ashino’s debut as a director.

Fantastic Fest in Austin is one of the best festivals in the country devoted to genre films. Previously, we brought you news about the first round of films scheduled to show during the fest. And now, there’s even more news to share today, including some great guests and some relly cool films we’re looking forward to seeing.
But really, I probably can’t do all this info proper justice (given my time constraints today at least) so I’ll just let Tim League, director/co-founder of the Fest, speak for himself via the latest Fest press release:
George Romero Returns to Fantastic Fest!
