Oscar-winning Ukraine-Russia war documentary 20 Days in Mariupol from Frontline, PBS and The AP, took home awards in two categories at The Grierson Trust’s 2024 British Documentary Awards on Wednesday night.

AMC+’s “Lakota Nation vs. the United States,” executive produced by Mark Ruffalo, won Best Documentary on the second and final night of the 45th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards, which took place Thursday at the Palladium Times Square in New York City and focused on the documentary categories. “ABC World News Tonight With David Muir,” CNN’s “The Whole Story With Anderson Cooper” and Palestinian journalist Bisan Owda were among the winners in the news categories, which were the focus during Wednesday’s ceremony.

During the event, which was hosted by W. Kamau Bell, “Lakota Nation vs. the United States,” which details the 1876 seizure of Black Hills and the indigenous Lakota people’s fight to reclaim the land, and Netflix’s “World War II: From the Front Lines,” narrated by John Boyega, each took home two trophies apiece. When Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race on July 21, it left PBS Frontline‘s The Choice with a big gaping hole.

The documentary of the two major parties’ presidential nominees has been a quadrennial tradition, and its filmmaker, Michael Kirk, had weeks earlier screened a four-hour rough cut of Biden vs. Trump.

“We’d seen the debacle of the debate, and figured he was a dead man walking, but you never knew,” Kirk said.

As it turned out, Frontline executive producer Raney Aronson-Rath had also insisted that Kirk and his team also make a first-of-its-kind documentary on the vice president, meaning that they were already gathering material on the Democrats’ eventual nominee, Kamala Harris.

Yet The Choice was still a scramble.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has tapped W. Kamau Bell, the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning stand-up comedian, as the host of the 45th Annual Documentary Emmy Awards on Sept. 26.

Last year, Bell earned a Children’s & Family Emmy Award for outstanding non-fiction program for “1000% Me: the Growing Up Mixed.”

“When we met Kamau at the Children’s and Family Emmys with his daughters Samaiyah and Juno, we knew he’d be a compelling and entertaining host,” said Adam Sharp, President and CEO of NATAS. “His sensitivity and expertise is a perfect fit, especially for the documentary community.”

At their best, political documentaries make sense of complex issues. But getting them seen has become more challenging than ever given Hollywood’s preference for celebrity or true-crime nonfiction offerings over anything grappling with thorny, complicated issues or figures.

Exclusive: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences plans to recut the 90-minute version of the Oscars broadcast it provided to international licensees, Deadline has learned, in order to restore a key moment it had left out of the original package: the Best Documentary Feature category won by the Ukraine war-themed film 20 Days in Mariupol.

Deadline has learned the move comes after Suspilne TV, the broadcaster that holds rights to air the Oscar show in Ukraine, protested the omission of the category from the 90-minute version, saying it was “shocked and deeply disappointed” by the decision that also left the moving acceptance speech by Ukrainian filmmaker Mstyslav Chernov on the cutting-room floor.

The 2024 Oscars etched several milestones, and one in particular happened with great frequency: A lot of the night’s winners were first-timers.

First things first, just what everyone wants to read the morning after Oscar Sunday: stats. At this year’s ceremony — which, thanks to an earlier start time, blessedly wrapped up before 10:30 p.m. Et — 13 women won Oscars. 11 of those winners enjoyed their first Academy Award win ever. BAFTA celebrated a wonderful ceremony this year at the Royal Festival Hall over here in London, with Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer” the biggest champion of the evening. That movie took home seven BAFTA masks including Best Picture but it wasn’t the only film to have a big night.

“Poor Things” won five BAFTAs in total, “The Zone of Interest” took home three awards, and Samantha Morton was awarded the BAFTA Fellowship by presenter David Heyman. While not all of the winners made their way down to the Winners Press Conference Room, the majority did. There, the filmmakers and stars chatted away about their victories and projects with us journalists. Here’s a selection of some of the best moments.

Oppenheimer went into the 2024 Ee BAFTA Film Awards with the most nominations with 13, and earned the most wins overall with seven. Christopher Nolan took home his first BAFTA Best Director win, and the film also earned Best Film, Leading Actor (Cillian Murphy), Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr), Editing, Cinematography, and Original Score awards.

Poor Things followed with five wins in the Leading Actress (Emma Stone), Costume, Make Up & Hair, Production Design and Special Visual Effects categories. The Zone of Interest collected three wins: Outstanding British Film, Film Not in the English Language, and Sound. And The Holdovers was recognized with Supporting Actress (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) and Casting honors.

The 2024 Bafta Film Awards ceremony is taking place today (February 18) at London’s Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank.

The stars and artists behind the biggest films of 2023 descended on London this weekend for the BAFTA Film Awards. British film’s biggest night is often seen as the best predictor of Oscar momentum before the Academy Awards and the results often mirror each other.

If that’s the case this year, it will be all “Oppenheimer” all the time. Oppenheimer leads the 2024 Oscar nominations, which were unveiled Tuesday morning.

The film nabbed a total of 13 noms, followed by Poor Things with 11, Killers of the Flower Moon with 10 and Barbie with eight.

All four films will compete for best picture of the year, along with American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Maestro, Past Lives and The Zone of Interest.

Among those setting records with their noms were Lily Gladstone, who is the first Native American acting nominee, and Martin Scorsese, who is now the most nominated living movie director.

Meanwhile, the high-profile snubs included Leonardo DiCaprio and Greta Gerwig.

Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid announced the nominees in all 23 categories live from the Film Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

The 2024 Oscars are the first in which films must meet two of four representation and inclusion standards in order to be eligible for the top prize of best picture.

The epic period piece is up for Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Leading Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., as well as a slew of crafts categories.

Awards season continues. For a year with a lot of notable box office anomalies, the award recognitions are stacked with popular choices. The Golden Globes kicked things off, and then the SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards started to show audiences who are seen as the favorites to win this year. Then, the Emmys threw a spotlight on the achievements made in television this past year, and now the list for the 2024 BAFTAs have been announced.

As seen in the previous awards ceremonies, Oppenheimer and Poor Things lead the charge in nominations. This afternoon the full list of nominations for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards were announced in London, with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things leading the nominees.

Jonathan Glazer’s adaptation of Martin Amis’s The Zone of Interest received nine nominations, the same as Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Other notable films we’ll be looking out for on the night include Andrew Haigh’s brilliant and touching film All of Us Strangers, and the enthralling Anatomy of a Fall.

British films are well represented with Rye Lane, Scrapper and How to Have Sex among the nominees.

The 77th annual British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards will be held on Sunday, the 18th of February. We’ll see you there.

Nominations for the 2024 BAFTAs have been revealed!

This year, Oppenheimer scored the most nominations with a total of 13. Poor Things received the second-most nominations this year with a total of 11.

There are some big surprises within the nominations including no nomination for Lily Gladstone and her director Martin Scorsese for Killers of the Flower Moon. In addition, Barbie’s Greta Gerwig and Poor Things‘ Yorgos Lanthimos were not nominated in the Best Director category.

The British Academy announced the nominees for their annual awards on Thursday (January 10).

This year’s ceremony is set to take place on February 18 live from London, England with David Tennant hosting.

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” appears to be the film to beat going into the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, having landed 13 nominations, with the director’s most successful film in the U.K. in terms of box office now becoming its most-nominated on home soil.

Announced Thursday from London, the atomic bomb biopic is nominated for best film, director (which could earn Nolan his shocking first-ever BAFTA), leading actor for Cillian Murphy and supporting nods for both Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr.

Close behind sits Yorgos Lanthimos’ steampunk black comedy “Poor Things” with 11 nominations, including for best film and actress for Emma Stone.

But for all the achievements of “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things,” the biggest talking point is likely to be the snubbing of Greta Gerwig’s box office destroying cultural phenomenon “Barbie” across so many categories.

The film went into the nominations tied with both “Oppenheimer” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 15 Longlist slots.

The Cinema Eye Honors announced the winners for its documentary films and series competition Friday in Manhattan, with “32 Sounds” taking the honor for outstanding nonfiction feature. Maite Alberdi won outstanding direction for “The Eternal Memory” together with Kaouther Ben Hania for “Four Daughters,” while “Paul T. Goldman” won outstanding nonfiction series.

The film received six nominations, including Outstanding Nonfiction Feature and Outstanding Direction. Mstyslav Chernov’s “20 Days in Mariupol,” Maite Alberdi’s “The Eternal Memory” and Sam Green’s “32 Sounds” followed with five nominations each.

Each nomination represents what the group deems a high point in 2023 across aspects of the entertainment spectrum. A short wretch and slight taste of bile comes upon realizing we are firmly in “awards season,” that time of disgrace and degradation recently portended by the first round of Look Upon My Suffering Narratives––Bradley Cooper took two hours to apply a fake nose, but is that braver than Michael Fassbender never blinking?––and established, now, by the announcement of Gotham Award nominees. Past Lives and A Thousand and One are both up for best feature, breakthrough director (Celine Song for Past Lives and A.V. Rockwell for A Thousand and One) and best lead performance (Greta Lee for Past Lives and Teyana Taylor for A Thousand and One).

The documentary festival Doc NYC has unveiled the full lineup for its 14th edition. It will be a total of 114 features and 129 short films. The festival runs in-person November 8-16 at IFC Center, Sva Theatre and Village East by Angelika and continues online through November 26 with films available to viewers across the U.S.

The Short Lists sections showcase a selection of nonfiction features and shorts that the festival’s programming team considers to be among the year’s strongest contenders for Oscars and other awards. The Winner’s Circle are films already feted at major international film events while Come As You Are section highlights films about people striving to find their place in the world, or in their communities.
