I usually love a slow burn, especially in a spy thriller series. However, The Agency, a new series developed by Showtime that will stream on Paramount+, is a drawn-out progression that gives new meaning to the meandering way incense burns. In other words, the show is all atmosphere, just for show, with very little substance.

The Agency suffers from a severe lack of motivation. The characters are poorly developed, and there is no payoff after the first episodes, where a pilot desperately needs to draw the viewer in with exciting plot developments. The lack of tension and intrigue makes the batch of episodes available to critics feel boring and stagnant.

The 47-year-old actor joined Jodie Turner-Smith, Richard Gere, Katherine Waterston, and Jeffrey Wright at the premiere of The Agency on Thursday night (November 21) held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Fellow cast members in attendance included India Fowler, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, Alex Reznik, Joe Wright, Reza Brojerdi, and Harriet Sansom Harris.

Here’s the synopsis: “Martian (Fassbender) is a covert CIA agent, ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to London Station. When the love he left behind reappears, romance reignites. As such, it comes as no great surprise that the announcement of this year's British Independent Film Awards nominees is a veritable treasure trove of great art and great artists that stand to represent the very best British filmmaking has to offer.

Leading the pack with an impressive 14 nominations — including nods for Best British Independent Film, Director, Screenplay, and Debut Director — is British-Irish filmmaker Rich Peppiatt...

The British Independent Film Awards this year honor two Sundance breakout films, with both “Kneecap” and “Love Lies Bleeding” atop the 2024 nominations list.

Rich Peppiatt’s “Kneecap” (repping Ireland for the 2024 Best International Feature Oscar) leads this year’s nominees with 14 nods, including Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best British Independent Film. “Kneecap” is based on the eponymous rap group, which star here alongside Michael Fassbender in a fictionalized band origin story.

Jeffrey Wright, Jodie Turner-Smith, Katherine Waterston, and Richard Gere also star as series regulars with Downton Abbey‘s Huge Bonneville as a guest star. Rounding out the cast are John Magaro, Alex Reznik, Andrew Brooke, Harriet Sansom Harris, India Fowler, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, and Reza Brojerdi.

The first two episodes of the espionage thriller series will be available to stream and on demand on Nov. 29. It will launch exclusively on Paramount+ internationally in the UK, Canada, Australia, Italy, Germany, Latin America and Brazil.

Paramount+ with Showtime today revealed the first photos from its espionage political thriller The Agency, starring Michael Fassbender, Jeffrey Wright, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Richard Gere.

Currently in production in London, The Agency is commissioned by Showtime Studios and produced in association with 101 Studio. George Clooney and Grant Heslov are executive producers through Smokehouse Pictures.

A fresh take on the critically acclaimed hit French drama Le Bureau des Legendes, The Agency will debut on demand and streaming for Paramount+ subscribers with the Paramount+ with Showtime plan before its on-air debut.

The series will stream internationally on Paramount+ in the UK, Canada, Australia, Italy, Germany, Latin America, Brazil, and Japan. The series is co-distributed internationally by Paramount Global Content Distribution and Federation Studios. The premiere date will be announced soon.

‘Masked’ Mania

Bandicoot Scotland, an Argonon joint venture, has secured a two-series recommission from U.K. broadcaster ITV for “The Masked Singer U.K.” The renewal includes a sixth season currently in production and a seventh 8 x 90′ series. In addition, Bandicoot is set to produce “The After Mask,” a new 8 x 30′ digital companion series for 2025. Hosted by Harriet Rose, the show will be available across on-demand, social, and digital channels including Itvx and YouTube.

“The After Mask” will feature interactions with the celebrity panel, host Joel Dommett, and unmasking interviews with contestants. Rose will also provide behind-the-scenes insights into the show’s production.

Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn is having a huge moment between his breakout in the Netflix role, his recent starring turn in A Quiet Place: Day One, and his upcoming appearance as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in the MCU’s Fantastic Four film. It’s no wonder that Hoard, an indie movie in which he has a supporting role, is getting a much larger platform than it otherwise would, considering his popularity. As for the movie itself, it’s a conventional story told from an unconventional perspective, resulting in an incredibly uneven entry into the genre.

Hoard follows a young woman through two time periods — her youth, when her mom was a hoarder, and her teenage years in foster care, where she is forced to unbury traumas that have long been repressed. Carmoon’s coming-of-age story clearly tries to use this very specific experience to channel more universal emotions.

The Paramount+ With Showtime drama The Agency is continuing to build up its cast.

Five actors — Alex Reznik, Andrew Brooke, Harriet Sansom Harris, India Fowler and Saura Lightfoot-Leon — have joined the espionage thriller, which stars Michael Fassbender and is based on the acclaimed French series Le Bureau des Legendes.

The cast also includes Jeffrey Wright, Jodie Turner-Smith, Katherine Waterston, John Magaro, and Richard Gere.

Currently filming in London, The Agency centers on Martian (Fassbender), “a covert CIA agent who’s ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to London station,” per the show’s logline. “When the love he left behind reappears, romance reignites. His career, his real identity and his mission are pitted against his heart; hurling them both into a deadly game of international intrigue and espionage.”

Reznik (Babylon) will play Coyote, an undercover CIA agent. Brooke (After Life, Children of Men) will play another CIA officer who goes by Grandpa.

Joseph Quinn is about to be everywhere. The “Stranger Things” breakout star already appeared in “A Quiet Place: Day One” and has been announced as part of Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four” alongside fellow “Gladiator II” star Pedro Pascal. Now, he’ll be in theaters soon with the award-winning indie film “Hoard.”

Quinn stars as a mysterious stranger who crosses paths with a young woman (Saura Lightfoot-Leon) 10 years after she experienced a traumatic moment with her mother, whose obsessive hoarding threatened both of their lives.

The official synopsis reads: “‘Hoard’ film follows young girl Maria (Lily-Beau Leach) living in London in 1984 as she navigates her mother’s obsessive hoarding. One night, their world falls apart, and we join Maria a decade later, living with her foster mother. Flashing forward to the girl’s teenage years, she (Lightfoot-Leon) must confront the madness and trauma of her late mother when a stranger (Quinn) arrives on her doorstep.

Saura Lightfoot Leon stars in Luna Carmoon’s impressive debut film as the daughter of a hoarder. Here’s our Hoard review.

On the set of her debut feature Luna Carmoon sprayed a scent, appropriately titled Secretions Magnifique, that was designed to emulate the smells of sperm, blood, sweat, tears to immerse her actors more in the mood of the film. That might sound gross, but that’s kind of the point. Hoard is unapologetically disgusting, but a deeply empathetic film about sexuality, loneliness and grief.

Hoard opens with a mother-daughter duo, Cynthia (Hayley Squires) and Maria (Lily-Beau Leach) digging through bins to find treasures that they take back to their overflowing flat. Cynthia is hoarder, emotionally attached to every single piece of clutter in her house. She nearly breaks down when she thinks Maria didn’t bring back the peels of her orange and tinfoil back from school. Maria...

There haven’t been many debuts quite as memorable and as striking, than that of Luna Carmoon’s Hoard. A resourceful, evocative piece, it marks what could well be the start of a hugely promising career behind the lens. Needless to say, we were thrilled to have the opportunity to speak not only to the filmmaker, but to three of her leading stars.

Synopsis

Seven-year-old Maria and her mother live in their own loving world built on sorting through bins and collecting shiny rubbish. One night, their world falls apart, and we join Maria a decade later, living with her foster mother.

Perhaps it comes as no surprise that a film named Hoard is, well, disgusting. Everyday trash is one young woman’s treasure, and muck and grime communicate the extremities of humanity in Luna Carmoon’s prickly drama, which draws inspiration from the director’s own life. This is an uncompromising film that’s unafraid to wade in discomfort, for better or for worse.

In its bisected story, Hoard first introduces the young Maria (initially played by Lily-Beau Leach), whose close loving relationship with her mother (Hayley Squires) is laid bare in their “catalogue of love”. In the evenings, they rummage round local bins, hoping to find little treasures to adorn their home: a hoarder’s paradise where stuffed bin bags cover the floors, tin cans dangle from ceilings and unopened books are stacked immeasurably high.
