The WGA East’s second Showrunner Academy gets underway today, with the 31-member class taking part in a program designed to support television writer-producers, upper-level writers and new show creators in honing the skills necessary to become successful showrunners and TV industry leaders.
The Academy, which provides instruction from current showrunners and other industry professionals on a wide range of topics, is led by Diana Son and Frank Pugliese.
“Being a showrunner is so much more than being the creative voice of the show,” Son said in a statement. “It’s also managing a multimillion-dollar endeavor with over 100 employees. We’re bringing in accomplished and experienced showrunners who’re willing to share the breadth of their experience – the good, bad and the ugly – so new showrunners can have a head start on figuring out what kind of showrunner they’re going to be.

“We take our journalism shockingly seriously for a cartoon,” admits “Tooning Out the News” showrunner R.J. Fried in our recent webchat. He continues, “We have a research team of people with cable news backgrounds. As much as we joke around, we don’t joke around.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“Stephen Colbert Presents Tooning Out the News” is an animated news parody on Paramount+. Its segments satirize various cable news shows and feature interviews with real life guests. This year the series has received an Emmy nomination for Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series. As well as producing and writing on the show, Fried plays news anchor James Smartwood.
SEEHow well does Stephen Colbert know ‘Lord of the Rings’ trivia?
Fried explains, “It’s a daily animated show. No one’s ever done that before. It’s a very long intense day and comes together through the course of like 18 hours.

"If someone reads into this joke, can we defend it?"
That question is often on the mind of R.J. Fried, showrunner of Our Cartoon President on Showtime. As the Democratic presidential race heats up with each passing moment, the writers’ room at Showtime’s “Our Cartoon President” is constantly on its toes to keep up with the news cycle.
“Bernie had his heart attack, and Mike [Leech, writer/producer] says, ‘At “The Simpsons” they never walk into work and say “Mr. Burns had a heart attack in real life, we have to change the show.”‘ We have to change ours,” showrunner R.J. Fried tells Variety. “These events come out of nowhere, and we have to go back and redo our episodes to make sure we honor the news as closely as we can.”
Now in its third season, the show continues to poke fun at the political world. With the ever-changing state of the race, the writers and animators are writing, recording and animating into the early hours. Other times, however, coincidence will work in their favor.

With Our Cartoon President, co-creator R.J. Fried tried to do something that had never been done before, producing topical animation that could keep up with the relentless chaos and daily headlines surrounding the Trump administration.
Based on a popular recurring segment from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Showtime’s satirical animated series was conceived as a workplace comedy, where the workplace in question happened to be the White House—a heightened character study of Trump, his family, confidants, flunkies and more. Following conversations between Colbert, Late Show showrunner Chris Licht, producer Matt Lappin, and animator Tim Luecke, late-night veteran Fried was brought in to showrun, at the recommendation of Robert Smigel.
For both Colbert and Fried, it was important to approach the show with one idea in mind. “The thing that Stephen always said is that Donald Trump, for all the horrible things he’s doing, is the hero of his own journey.

Showtime has ordered a second season of its half-hour animated series Our Cartoon President, Deadline has confirmed.
Executive produced by Stephen Colbert, showrunner R.J. Fried and Late Show executive producer Chris Licht, Our Cartoon President follows what Showtime calls “the tru-ish misadventures of the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, and his merry band of advisors and family members.”
The first 10 episodes of the show produced by CBS Television Studios introduced audiences to Trump’s attempts at “winning” the State of the Union address, comforting disaster victims and rolling back President Obama’s accomplishments, as well as his co-dependent relationship with the media.
Tim Luecke is lead animator and co-executive producer, and Matt Lappin serves as consulting producer.
Variety was first to report the renewal.

“Our Cartoon President,” Showtime’s animated comedy that skewers Donald Trump‘s White House, is hoping to shake up the 2018 Emmys … bigly. Best Animated Program has seen its fair share of repeat winners over the years, with 10-time champ “The Simpsons” being the granddaddy of all. “South Park” is next at three wins, followed by “Bob’s Burgers,” “Futurama” and “Star Wars: Clone Wars” with two apiece. But “Our Cartoon President” has a secret weapon that could help it break through with Emmy voters: co-creator Stephen Colbert.

“Our Cartoon President’ is a lie worthy of America’s most dangerous liar, but far less deserving of the comparable attention it’s likely to receive. For one, it’s absolutely part of the same problem it pretends to be above: humanizing a man who tells us all we need to know about him every time he speaks or tweets (freely, rather than reading from a speech). Much like the Cheeto-in-Chief himself, Showtime’s edgeless animated comedy pays lip service to its most troubling issue before dodging the problem in favor of inane gibberish. “Some are worried this show might humanize me,” the animated President Trump says in the opening to Episode 1. “Well, too late, folks. After my recent physical, Dr. Ronny assured me that I am a human being and there’s no cure for that.”
Setting aside the argument that it’s never too late to humanize a dangerous man (if,...
