Charmaine Bingwa.
Born in Western Australia to Zimbabwean parents, Charmaine Bingwa is the first openly gay and woman of colour to win the $US30,000 Heath Ledger Scholarship presented by Australians in Film.
“I’m stunned; this is an incredible platform,” Bingwa told If after accepting the award from Heath Ledger’s father Kim Ledger today at a dinner attended by eight of the 10 finalists at the Chateau Marmon in Los Angeles.
In her acceptance speech she told how Heath touched her life when she saw Brokeback Mountain. His character’s lines about ‘the pain of a life not lived’ inspired her to come out as a gay woman, she said.
“I heard the other day someone say that the most powerful currency you have is the impact you have on other people and I think Heath epitomises that. Heath personally taught me what the power of a performance can do,...

(Spoiler alert: Read at your own risk if you haven’t seen all of Amazon’s “Picnic at Hanging Rock.”)
By the end of the Amazon limited series “Picnic at Hanging Rock” audiences still don’t know what happened to the girls who went missing at the beginning. But showrunner and director Larysa Kondracki hopes her “enchanted chiller” will give fans an “emotionally satisfying conclusion” nonetheless.
If that’s not good enough for you, Kondracki told TheWrap she has her own “cockamamy idea” about what happened to the young ladies at the center of the TV adaptation based on Joan Lindsay’s iconic Australian novel of the same name, which the director describes as “‘Heathers’ meets ‘The Breakfast Club,’ with a little bit of ‘The Shining.'”

Natalie Dormer is mad about her latest gig, “Picnic at Hanging Rock.” Partly because she gets to go mad in the new Amazon limited series based on Joan Lindsay’s iconic Australian novel of the same name.
The former “Game of Thrones” star leads the cast of the adaptation as Mrs. Hester Appleyard, the enigmatic headmistress of Appleyard College, a boarding school that she established for young ladies isolated in Australian bushland. The story centers around the mysterious disappearances of three schoolgirls and one teacher on Valentine’s Day in 1900 and the subsequent investigation, covering its impact on students, families and staff at Appleyard College and the nearby town.
“It’s not so much the actual thing of what happened to them, it’s the ripple effect to this community and all these different personalities on what that event does to people. You know, that’s the drama,” Dormer said.

Joan Lindsay’s much-acclaimed 1967 Australian novel “Picnic At Hanging Rock” has already resulted in one stunning adaptation — Peter Weir’s 1975 film of the same name — so a second attempt, this time a television series, may already feel unnecessary. But it doesn’t take long for writers Beatrix Christian and Alice Addison to make the case for their own 2018 “Picnic,” a darker, more mysterious, and extended version that manages to feel updated for our time while still keeping the original 1900 setting.
In “Picnic At Hanging Rock,” the central mystery is laid out immediately: Four young women — three students and their teacher — suddenly vanish on Valentine’s Day, 1900, while on a school picnic at, well, Hanging Rock. The base premise is familiar to fans of crime series, but this is no ordinary drama; it’s eerie and haunting. It’s less dreamy (a quality frequently ascribed to the film) and more of...

Amazon is coming for the classics. The streaming outfit is now taking on Peter Weir’s twisted thriller “Picnic at Hanging Rock,” care of a brand-new six-part series. Like Weir’s film, the series is based on Joan Lindsay’s cult novel of the same name, which first spawned Weir’s take back in 1975. This new one doesn’t change the book’s setting — an isolated Australian boarding school in the year 1900 — or its pervasive sense of dread.
Featuring former “Game of Thrones” star Natalie Dormer, along with Lola Bessis, Yael Stone, Anna McGahan, Sibylla Budd, Ruby Rees, and Inez Curro, the series looks to have plenty to intrigue fans of creepy cinema, unsolved mysteries, and the strange magic that unspools when a bunch of hormonal young ladies are thrown together. At the secluded Appleyard College (led by Dormer as headmistress), students adore an annual tradition that involves a picnic at the eponymous Hanging Rock.

Georgia Flood as Alice behind the scenes of Anzac Girls. .A Screentime production for ABC TV.

While writer-producer Felicity Packard was researching an ABC WW1 drama, she made a shocking discovery: More than 3,700 Australian and New Zealand nurses served overseas during the war- but only seven were awarded military medals.
The reason for that anomaly is one of the recurring themes of Anzac Girls, a six-hour series based on real people and events at the Western Front and Gallipoli, which premieres at 8.30 pm on Sunday August 10.
Packard believes the Australian Army refused to honour the nurses because officers were opposed to young women being involved in the war.

Australians in Film made the announcement at a fundraising dinner in Los Angers held late last week.
.It's hard to put into words just how deeply honored I am to be receiving the Heath Ledger Scholarship, not just for the invaluable support it offers in my career, but also for what it means to me personally,. said Fern.
.Growing up in a small country town, Heath's journey from Perth to Hollywood acts as an inspiration for me, always fuelling my passion and reminding me to dream big. I am so grateful to the Ledger family and Australians in Film for affording me this incredible opportunity..
The media has been quick to draw similarities between Fern and Ledger, both of whom were raised in Western Australia.

Australia and New Zealand have a fine tradition of mixing comedy and horror to superb effect. Be it the early work of Peter Jackson such as Bad Taste and Brain Dead, or more recent efforts such as Primal and The Loved Ones, horror from down under always seems to walk a very fine line be laughs and scares, and 100 Bloody Acres is no different.

Title: “100 Bloody Acres” Directors: Cameron Cairnes, Colin Cairnes Cast: Damon Herriman, Angus Sampson, Anna McGahan, Oliver Ackland, John Jarratt There’s a small trend going on in the world of horror as the self parodying movies of this genre have given us a little bit of breathing room compared to the heavy gore that we’re so accustomed to as a desensitized audience “100 Bloody Acres” is one of those rare horror comedies within the past couple of years that stands out not only as another clever horror film that pokes fun at there stereotypes but also showcases what a little bit of development on the characters end can really do [ Read More ]

Directors/writers: Cameron and Colin Cairnes. Cast: Damon Herriman, Angus Sampson, Anna McGahan, Oliver Ackland, and Jamie Kristian. 100 Bloody Acres is an Aussie shot gorefest from brothers Cameron and Colin Cairnes. Their first feature naturally follows two brothers: Reg (Damon Herriman) and Lindsay Morgan (Angus Sampson). These two characters must hack and slash their way through unwary travellers and unfortunate roadkill, to make the best fertilizer around Adelaide. Their exploits often go wrong and much of the comedy in this title comes from the Morgan brother's lack of focus. The spray of blood and bone is just a result of their mishaps. The story, if looked at from a distance, follows many cliches found in horror. A few young friends cross the wrong people in an isolated locale. But, the characters make this film more enjoyable. The protagonist, Reg, begins as a villain, but he transitions into an unlikely hero...

Australian horror comedy 100 Bloody Acres got mostly rave reviews in the Us last week including from major media outlets such as The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times.
Those plaudits apparently did not stir American cinemagoers as the debut film from the brothers Cameron and Colin Cairnes took just $US3,419 at 13 screens.
However the producers say the primary strategy by the Us distributor Doppelgänger Releasing was to position the film on Video-On-Demand platforms and later on DVD and Blu-ray. It was released simultaneously on VOD with the theatrical launch in cities including New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago, Portland and Denver. The VOD results won.t be known for some weeks.
The twisted tale of two brothers (Damon Herriman, Angus Sampson) who ran an organic fertiliser business in the bush using human corpses, it opens in Australia on August 1 via eOne Hopscotch.

Chicago – “We’re not psychos, all right?!?! We’re small business operators.” It’s been awhile since there was a horror-comedy as fun as “100 Bloody Acres,” opening today in Chicago at the Music Box Theatre, and playing in some other markets around the country. It’s not a perfect genre entry but this blend of comedy and horror, so expertly tackled by filmmakers like Sam Raimi & Edgar Wright, is much harder to pull off than it looks (as evidenced by mountains of horror-comedies that aren’t funny or scary). “100 Bloody Acres” pulls it off, finding some dark strains of humor and some grisly moments to go with them. For genre fans, it’s a definite success.
Reg Morgan (Damon Herriman of “Justified”) runs a fertilizer business with his brother Lindsay (Angus Sampson). Reg is the meeker, gentler of the two, while brother Lindsay is a giant of a man,...

At Any Price: Aussie Horror Comedy Predictable, Maintains Interest
Content with delivering an overly familiar comedy-horror scenario even as it seems committed to bringing both with equal measure, 100 Bloody Acres, the debut film from Aussie brothers Cameron and Colin Cairnes, is never scary, but manages to squeeze some effective gore and several laughs out of its derivative little soul. Rednecks terrorizing/cannibalizing/disemboweling insipidly stupid and attractive but unremarkable city folk that unwittingly stumble into the hellacious rural hinterlands is a horror trademark, but try as it does to remain true to being both funny and scary, the Cairnes brothers end up giving too little of either element to make this effort satisfactory.

Your parents always told you never to accept rides from strangers; you never know whose car you’re getting into. That is a general truism and one that is exploited quite often in horror cinema. The kindest and most dim-witted are the ones you need to look out for. Case in point, 100 Bloody Acres.
The film starts off with the strange introduction of Reg (House of Wax’s Damon Herriman) who finds a man wrecked on the side of the road and proceeds to stash the body in his delivery truck. A weird but decent idea I guess, until he runs across three hitchhikers, one of whom he cannot resist. The hitchhikers, Wesley (Jamie Kristian), James (Oliver Ackland), and Sophie (Anna McGahan) are on their way to a music festival, but a broken down car alters their fate. Reg, not thinking with his big head, (though if he was, I...

My regular readers may remember that I am psychologically predisposed towards liking any horror film that comes from Australia. I'm not sure why, exactly, but I think it's because their indie films often exhibit some true effort and novelty; because they're a cool and colorful people who don't take themselves too seriously; and because a lot of them really seem to love a good horror flick. The new Aussie import known as 100 Bloody Acres is most assuredly a comedy first and a horror film second, but kudos to the Colin and Cameron Cairnes for maintaining a strong balance of gross humor and shocking violence.
Our plot focuses on a pair of wildly disparate brothers (one's sort of twitchy; the other is a hulking brute) who run a very unique organic fertilizer business. The small, dopey brother (Damon Herriman) comes across a horrible car crash, and (like an idiot) decides to steal all of the corpses.

The Australian horror comedy 100 Bloody Acres will launch on VOD and in limited release on June 28th. Until then, here’s a trailer and poster to get you acquainted with a film that could be one of the surprises of the summer. It looks like an Australian Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil, which sounds good to me.
The movie is directed by Colin and Cameron Cairnes, and stars Damon Herrriman (Justified), Agnus Sampson, Anna McGahan, Oliver Ackland, Jamie Kristian, and John Jarratt.

It’s been said before (by me) that the horror/comedy hybrid is one of the toughest genre mash-ups to get right. More often than not one of the two suffers as the filmmakers focus on one to the detriment of the other. It’s not that the two need to be equally represented, but they need to be equally sincere. A recent and rare example of one that succeeds is the new Australian film, 100 Bloody Acres. It’s a very funny comedy through and through, but it never shies away from the red stuff. When the going gets tough the tough get grinding, and in the Morgan Brothers’ case what they’re grinding are human bodies. They’re not murderers per se as they rely almost exclusively on accident victims, but what else are small business owners to do when they discover that humans are the secret ingredient that makes their fertilizer more popular than ever...
