The recent first season of the FX series Shogun has continued its awards success into 2025, with the acclaimed show prevailing at Saturday’s WGA Awards and as one of the big winners at last month’s Golden Globes. But a key figure on a previous adaptation of the book does not quite understand the appeal of the recent version.
Jerry London, who directed the nine-hour Shogun that aired on NBC in September 1980, remembers his project as challenging, and says that producers initially pushed for a director of Japanese descent. “I had to convince them that I knew what I was doing,” London tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So after about a month or so, they accepted me and everything went well. But it was a very difficult show to do, and it turned out great.”

This post contains spoilers for season 1 of FX's "Shōgun."
As much as I enjoyed the first season of the FX miniseries-turned-regular series "Shōgun," it was hard to ignore how much the show was a massively streamlined version of the book. That's to be expected, of course; James Clavell's 1975 novel is a solid 1400 pages depending on which edition you're reading, so you can't really blame a 10-episode show for cutting the story down to its bare essentials.
Still, the result is that a lot of the characters' histories are simplified in the show, or they're not addressed much altogether. There's enough information for viewers who haven't read the book to get the gist of what's important, but most of the rich detail of the book is necessarily omitted. If you're a fan of the show who's looking for a fuller understanding of these characters' often-overlapping family trees and alliances,...

Matlock star Kathy Bates looked stunned when her name was called as winner for Best Actress In A Drama Series at the Critics Choice Awards on Friday, letting out an expletive before she made her way to the stage.
Bates, who went viral at the Golden Globes when she ripped what appeared to be an acceptance speech after Shōgun’s Anna Sawai was announced as winner in her category, didn’t have a speech prepared this time.
Along with acknowledging the CBS series’ cast and crew, including thanking Matlock creator Jennie Snyder Urman “for creating such an amazing role for an old lady like me,” Bates expressed gratitude to the firefighters in the audience following Lafd’s efforts during the recent L.A. wildfires.
“Our producer, Eric Christian Olsen, had a house in Palisades, and it burned down. So it’s very personal to us, and to watch all the...

Though Toranaga does not control the wind, Hiroyuki Sanada, the actor that plays him in Shōgun, holds the forecast for the series’ Season 2 in the palm of his hand.
Speaking with Deadline along with series creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks backstage Friday at the Critics Choice Awards, where the historical drama series sliced its way to a leading four wins, Sanada, who won tonight for Best Actor in a Drama Series, teased his desires for Season 2.
“In Season 1, [Toranaga] didn’t become a Shōgun yet. So, I’d like to see him become the leader of Japan. That is my hope.”
The show, based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name and set in 1600s feudal Japan, follows Lord Yoshii Toranaga’s fight against his enemies on the Council of Regents. His plans for unyielding power is complicated by the arrival of John Blackthrone (Cosmo Jarvis), a shipwrecked...

After two postponements due to the recent Los Angeles wildfires, the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards were at last held on Friday — and it was a big night for Shōgun.
FX’s acclaimed drama, which went into the evening with the most TV category nods, ultimately won in four of the five categories for which it was nominated, including trophies for Best Drama Series, Actor in a Drama (Hiroyuki Sanada), Supporting Actor in a Drama (Tadanobu Asano) and Supporting Actress in a Drama (Moeka Hoshi). The 30th annual Critics Choice Awards selected Neon’s Anora as its Best Picture on Friday, boosting the fortunes of Sean Baker’s indie pic that started its journey by winning Cannes’ Palme d’Or last spring.
Anora had come into the night with seven nominations but had come up short until the final category was announced at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. Up next this weekend for Anora to keep the momentum going are the DGA Awards and PGA Awards, where it is up for both top prizes Saturday.
The Critics Choice Awards, which were hosted for a third year in a row by Chelsea Handler, has traditionally been a good Oscar bellwether. Last year, eventual Best Picture Oscar winner Oppenheimer scored a leading eight wins here including the marquee Best Picture prize that Anora just snagged.

“Wicked,” “Emilia Pérez,” and “The Substance” each triumphed with three wins at the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards on Friday night. However, it was “Anora” that claimed the best picture prize at this year’s ceremony.
The Neon release entered the race with seven nominations, including best actress for Mikey Madison and best director and original screenplay for Sean Baker. But ultimately, “Anora” walked away with the coveted best picture award, and nothing more.
Meanwhile, “Wicked” director Jon M. Chu, who wasn’t nominated in the Academy Awards’ best director category, beat out several Oscar nominees to win the best director honor at the Critics Choice Awards. “I’m going to win that Oscar!” Chu said jokingly on stage.
The film-acting categories had less surprises, as the ceremony handed best actress to Demi Moore (“The Substance”), best actor to Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”), best supporting actress to Zoe Saldaña (“Emilia...

Are the 2025 Critics Choice Awards about to be a repeat of the recent Emmys and Golden Globes?
Television awards faves Hacks, Shōgun, and Baby Reindeer are expected to dominate Friday’s ceremony, which was delayed twice in the wake of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.
Season 3 of Max’s laugh riot Hacks is predicted to walk away with four trophies: comedy series, comedy actress (Jean Smart), comedy supporting actress (Hannah Einbinder), and comedy supporting actor (Paul W. Downs). In fact, the only category Hacks is expected to lose is Best Comedy Actor … because it doesn’t compete there. Instead, our odds-makers believe Adam Brody (Nobody Wants This) had better start preparing a speech.
Likewise, Season 1 of FX’s historical epic Shōgun has four races locked up, per our rankings: drama series, drama actress (Anna Sawai), drama actor (Hiroyuki Sanada), and drama supporting actor (Tadanobu Asano). The remaining statuette is Best Drama Supporting Actress,...

The Best Film Ensemble category at the Screen Actors Guild Awards can occasionally be a tough one to predict. Gold Derby’s pundits erroneously thought that 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood would prevail over Parasite, while 2016’s Hidden Figures was correctly chosen by only one of the editors, experts, or top 24 users — combined. Well, this year’s top race looks to be less of a head-scratcher and more of a coronation, as Gold Derby’s 2025 SAG Awards predictions overwhelmingly favor Wicked to win with 17/10 odds. Talk about popular!
The SAG nominations were announced on Jan. 8, with Wicked leading all other films with five bids: Best Ensemble, Best Actress (Cynthia Erivo), Best Supporting Actress (Ariana Grande), Best Supporting Actor (Jonathan Bailey), and Best Stunt Ensemble. The Eightfold Fence is one of several intriguing concepts from medieval Japan introduced in the FX historical drama Shōgun, and while the show gives a brief explanation on the meaning, the significance of the idea is much deeper. Shōgun episode 4, which is titled “The Eightfold Fence”, and features the titular idea when Mariko (Anna Sawai) attempts to explain the behavior of Usami Fuji (Moeka Hoshi) to John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis). Mariko reveals to Blackthorne that understanding The Eightfold Fence will be key to the foreigner’s time in Japan, as it’s a guiding philosophy not only for Fuji, but the rest of the populace too.
Mariko’s explanation of The Eightfold Fence in Shōgun is relatively brief, but covers the concept well in broad strokes. It allows Blackthorne to understand just how different the worldview of the people of Japan is to the philosophies that guide the populace of his native Europe.

Maybe Kathy Bates won’t have to rip up her next acceptance speech.
Bates just earned two more SAG nominations for the CBS freshman series Matlock and the Max film The Great Lillian Hall — her ninth and 10th nomination of her career. She won two Sags in 1997 and 1999 for The Late Shift and Primary Colors, respectively. She’s already an Oscar winner for Misery and a two-time Emmy winner for American Horror Story and Two and A Half Men.
Bates received a 2025 Golden Globe nomination for playing Madeline Matlock in the clever update of the old ’80s series that starred Andy Griffith. Video of the 76-year-old actress went viral on Sunday after she was filmed ripping up her acceptance speech after Shōgun’s Anna Sawai took the Globe for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series.
Bates was the only actress to receive a SAG nomination for a drama on broadcast TV.

A whopping 21* performers received their first individual Screen Actors Guild Awards bids on Wednesday morning, including some famous faces we’ve been seeing onscreen for years.
The nominations list for the 2025 SAG Awards is led by Wicked for film and Shōgun for television, both with five overall bids. The first-time nominees from these projects are Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey for the former, and Tadanobu Asano, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Anna Sawai for the latter.
Pamela Anderson, Demi Moore, and Harrison Ford are some of the biggest Hollywood names to finally be individually recognized at SAG, for their performances in The Last Showgirl, The Substance, and Shrinking, respectively. (Moore was previously nominated as a member of the ensemble of the 2006 film Bobby.) All three actors also contended at the 2025 Golden Globes, with Moore prevailing in the comedy/musical lead category and jump-starting her Oscar narrative.

FX's acclaimed historical drama miniseries Shogun was anchored by Anna Sawai's award-winning performance as the loyal translator Lady Mariko, and the Emmy and Golden Globe winner made a great point about her character's return for Shogun's second season. Set in feudal Japan, Shogun chronicles a fictionalized and dramatized version of the events that led to the beginning of the real Tokugawa shogunate in the mid-1600s. Anna Sawai's Lady Mariko acts as an integral part of the narrative, both as a character driving the plot and as the audience's guide to both the Japanese language and feudal Japanese customs.
Shogun was originally conceived as a limited miniseries based on James Clavell's 1975 novel, and it followed fairly closely to its source material throughout the season. However, with the show's unprecedented success, FX renewed the show for two more seasons, with Shogun season 2 progressing beyond the original source material.

The Golden Globe awards took place this last weekend, and to the surprise of no one, FX's feudal Japan drama Shōgun took home several awards. The show won Best Drama Series, Hiroyuki Sanada (Yoshii Toranaga) won Best Drama TV Actor, Tadanobu Asano (Kashigi Yabushige) won Best TV Supporting Actor, and Anna Sawai (Toda Mariko) beat out House of the Dragon's Emma D'Arcy to take home the win for Best Drama TV Actress. Regardless of the competition, Shōgun was such a pitch perfect show that you'd have been crazy to bet against it.
Part of the reason Shōgun was so effective was that it told a complete, extremely powerful story; the show was designed as a limited series and covered the entirety of the classic 1975 novel by James Clavell. That's a huge advantage over a show like, say, Squid Game, which ended its second season on a massive cliffhanger...

Gold Derby’s top news stories for Jan. 6, 2025. A Real Pain comes to Hulu
One day after winning a Golden Globe, Searchlight Pictures’ A Real Pain now has a real plan for streaming. The dramedy film from writer-director-producer-actor Jesse Eisenberg, which won the Globe for supporting player Kieran Culkin, is coming to Hulu on Thursday, Jan. 16. Hulu and Searchlight — formerly Fox Searchlight — are both owned by Disney, so Hulu has become the home of a number of Searchlight titles, also including Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness, and Nightbitch.
A Real Pain made its first splash at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where Eisenberg won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. Since being picked up by Searchlight and released to general audiences in November, the film has been named one of the top 10 films of the year by the American Film Institute and received a long string of plaudits for Culkin. Finally, Jimmy Kimmel is ready to get back to late-night TV. And the timing couldn't be better for the comedian's first Jimmy Kimmel Live! episode of 2025.
Kimmel and the rest of late-night TV have been off the air for a few weeks. The holiday season provided a much-needed break for the host and staff to prepare for what should be a busy and eventful January.
A brand-new episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs tonight as Kimmel ends his holiday hiatus. It's a fitting day for Kimmel's return, giving him plenty to discuss.
Of course, Kimmel's monologue will likely touch on the anniversary of January 6. Kimmel hasn't let anyone forget what happened that day and today will be no different.
Today also marked a joint session of Congress to certify the results of the 2024 presidential election. Nothing amuses Kimmel more than mocking Republicans and hardcore MAGAs. Having them all under one...

Kathy Bates’ weight loss is catching eyes on screen and on the red carpet.
Starring on CBS’ critically acclaimed Matlock, her decades-spanning career remains unstoppable.
At Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards, she opened up about shedding 100 pounds — and how she managed it.
And no, it probably isn’t what you think.

In addition to her sense of style, Kathy Bates was showing off her weight loss. She did the same at the 2024 Emmy Awards back in September.

Audiences are going to have quite a bit of waiting to do before Season 2 of Shōgun, as the upcoming installment is still being written.
Co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer Justin Marks told reporters backstage at the Golden Globes on Sunday night that he and the writers are “about six weeks from the end of the writers’ room” on Season 2.
Marks and the rest of the cast and crew remained quiet on any details regarding the new season, or when production will begin. Deadline reported in May that the writers room was assembled last year and began over the summer.
Shōgun concluded its awards season run with a big night at the Golden Globes, securing wins including Best TV Drama Series and acting trophies for defending Emmy champs Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai and also Tadanobu Asano, who lost the Emmy to The Morning Show‘s Billy Crudup. See a full...

The 82nd Golden Globe Awards have wrapped up on CBS. It was a great year for TV, with series like Shōgun, The Penguin, True Detective: Night Country and more taking home well-deserved awards.
One show that didn't get much love this year was HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon, which stars Emma D'Arcy as queen-in-exile Rhaenyra Targaryen. D'Arcy got the show's lone Golden Globe nomination for its second season, which aired in 2024. They were up for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series – Drama, alongside Kathy Bates (Matlock), Maya Erskine (Mr. & Mrs. Smith), Keira Knightley (Black Doves), Keri Russell (The Diplomat), and Anna Sawai (Shōgun).
In the end, Anna Sawai took home the award for her bracing performance as Toda Mariko in Shōgun, as expected. Kudos to her. But just because D'Arcy didn't win the award doesn't mean they couldn't cut a memorable...

With last night's Golden Globe win for Best Actor in an anthology, limited series, or TV movie for his lead performance as Oz Cobb in The Penguin, Colin Farrell joins the very small circle of just three actors who have been honoured at the awards ceremony for playing comic book villains - and their characters all happen to be Batman foes.
Farrell was asked about joining the late Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix, who both previously won Golden Globes for their respective portrayals of the Joker in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight and Todd Phillips' Joker.
“You mentioned two actors who are, I think, for my money, two of the most extraordinarily talented and gifted and just brilliant artists in films that I’ve ever had the fortune to observe and be affected by," the Irish actor tells Variety. "What Heath did in Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight was extraordinary,...

After a big win at the 2025 Golden Globes, Anna Sawai shared her thoughts on possibly returning as Mariko in the already confirmed Shōgun season 2. Sawai took home the award for Best Actress in a TV Drama for her performance in FX’s historical series.
Her portrayal of Mariko, particularly in the penultimate episode “Crimson Sky,” was widely praised, with many considering it the best moment of the season. This episode marked the emotional departure of her character, who had become central to the show.
At the Golden Globes press conference, Sawai was asked about returning for the next season. She expressed her willingness to reprise her role, as ScreenRant reports, however, she also made it clear that she wouldn’t return unless it made sense for the story.
As Sawa said, he wants any potential comeback for Mariko to be meaningful and not just for the sake of bringing her...

Shōgun season 2's writing gets a positive update from creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks after its Golden Globe wins. While the end of Shōgun season 1 finished adapting James Clavell's 1975 novel, its massive success on Hulu and FX prompted the development of season 2, continuing the story from where the season 1 finale left off. Its success continued at the Golden Globes, winning four awards for Best Television Series, Best Actor (Hiroyuki Sanada), and Best Actress (Anna Sawai) in the Drama category, alongside Best Supporting Actor (Tadanobu Asano) in Series, Miniseries or Television Film.
While speaking during a Golden Globes press conference, where ScreenRant was in attendance, Kondo and Marks offered a positive update on Shōgun season 2's writing. The creators confirmed the writing team is hard at work crafting the follow-up to the series, with just six weeks left before the scripts are complete. They affirm how much they want to deliver a worthwhile sequel,...

After winning big at the 2025 Golden Globes, Anna Sawai gives a thoughtful response to reprising the role of Mariko in Shōgun season 2. Sawai came away with a victory in the TV Drama category for her leading performance in FX's historical epic, having also won an Emmy for her portrayal of Toranaga's loyal translator. "Crimson Sky", the penultimate episode of season 1, is a showcase for Sawai that puts the focus squarely on Mariko. It's widely considered to be the finest hour for the James Clavell adaption, serving as the farewell for the breakout character.
At the Golden Globes press conference, where Screen Rant was in attendance, Sawai addresses the possibility of returning for the already-confirmed Shōgun season 2. Sawai made clear she would love to be back as Mariko. But because of the character's death, the actor notes that she wants to be sure Mariko's return is done in a thoughtful way.
