Welcome back to another edition of International Insider. This week, you’ve got me, Jesse Whittock, taking you through the big stories from beyond the U.S. shores.
Indian Incentive
Luring them in: Indian TV production is one of the big, developing international narratives of 2022, and the country is desperate to attract more overseas players to its shores following a difficult pandemic. Our Contributing Editor for Asia, Liz Shackleton, took a deep dive into a new 30 cash rebate that the country’s Information & Broadcasting Ministry has rolled out over recent months. Here’s the science bit: the incentive will reimburse up to 30 of qualifying expenditure up to about INR20M. An additional 5 can be accessed for productions with larger Indian crews. To be eligible, productions must get I&b approval and spend a minimum INR25M. There are several other caveats, but Liz explains it better than I can,...

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we’ll shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. who are shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we’re speaking with Korean super-agent Soyoung Lee, who represents some of the nation’s biggest stars and talked to us about her experiences of the Korean content boom.
Few have been better placed to both witness and be part of the Korean content explosion than Soyoung Lee, super-agent and founder of one of the nation’s largest talent agencies, Saram Entertainment.
When she opened what was then called Jaewon Promotion Co almost exactly two decades ago – mainly specializing in marketing major brands such as McDonald’s – Soyoung could never have foreseen that by 2022 she would be representing some of the biggest and most in-demand stars not just in Korea but the world.

Much of "Minari," director Lee Isaac Chung's sublime reckoning with his adolescence, is an emotionally taut wind-up to its climax. After trying to set down roots -- literal and figurative -- in Arkansas, the Yi family finds itself strained by a number of crises. Jacob (Steven Yuen) is consumed by the success of his crops — something he understandably ties to his family's flourishing. But his obsession strains his relationship with his wife Monica (Yeri Han) who sees in her husband a reckless lack of consideration for the effect his actions have on their lives. It was by his whim that the family...

Everybody loves an underdog. During this year's awards season, that honor was given to Lee Isaac Chung's "Minari." The film follows the Yis, a Korean American family migrating to Arkansas from California. Patriarch Jacob (Steven Yeun) dreams of starting a farm, despite protests from his wife Monica (Yeri Han), and at the risk of uprooting his children (Alan Kim and Noel Cho). When Monica's mother (Yuh-Jung Youn) arrives from Korea, it adds a layer of dysfunction to an already-tenebrous family dynamic.

Another virtual ceremony, another missing red carpet? Not for the Oscars. Just as the Academy somewhat controversially brought the nominees to the show in real life, rather than attempting the fully virtual shows we’ve seen for Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG awards, the Oscars kicked off in style Sunday with a real red carpet. Usually the pinnacle red carpet show of the year, the Oscars tried its best to bring some pre-pandemic level glamour to tonight’s awards at Los Angeles’ Union Station.
Oscar-winner Halle Berry and Promising Young Woman producer Margot Robbie debuted new hairstyles for the occasion. Berry teased her short bob by posting a photo of a pile of hair on Instagram earlier in the evening.

Spirit Awards 2021 Winners List: ‘Nomadland,’ ‘I May Destroy You,’ Riz Ahmed, Carey Mulligan Win Big
“Mank” is the big leader at the 2021 Oscars with 10 nominations, but that wasn’t the case at the 36th Film Independent Spirit Awards. The nomination leader at this ceremony was Eliza Hittman’s acclaimed “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” which the Academy shut out from the Oscars. The same goes for other beloved Spirit Award nominees like “First Cow,” “Miss Juneteenth,” and “The Assistant.” In other words, the Indie Spirit Awards were a breath of fresh air in this elongated awards season where underdog indie contenders finally get their due in the spotlight.
“Minari” also preformed strong at the Indie Spirits, earning six nominations to match its six Oscar nominations. Fellow Oscar nominees “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Nomadland” each picked up five Spirit Award nominations. Netflix was the most nominated studio with 16 nominations, followed by Focus Features with 10 and A24 with 9.

“Nomadland” won Best Feature at the 2021 Film Independent Spirit Awards, which were announced live Thursday, and for the first time in primetime.
“Nomadland” took home four prizes, including Best Feature, Best Director for Chloé Zhao, as well as Best Editing and Best Cinematography. “Sound of Metal” also had a big night, winning Best First Feature, Best Supporting Male Paul Raci and an upset win for Best Male Lead Riz Ahmed. Carey Mulligan also won Best Female Lead for “Promising Young Woman,” and Yuh-Jung Youn won Best Supporting Female for “Minari.”

The 2021 Film Independent Spirit Awards are finally upon us, after the nominations were announced three months ago, and the ceremony is taking place just a few days ahead of the Academy Awards. This year, the Spirit Awards won’t be held midday in a hangar in Santa Monica, but will instead live-stream on IFC on Thursday, April 22 at 7:00 p.m. Pt/10:00 p.m. Et. In addition to the linear broadcast, the Spirit Awards will also stream simultaneously on AMC+. Following the broadcast, the full awards ceremony will be made available on demand across AMC+ and IFC platforms starting Friday, April 23. This year’s ceremony will be hosted by “Saturday Night Love” comedian Melissa Villaseñor.

It’s all come down to this. The longest awards season is drawing to a close, after an excruciating pandemic year that nearly destroyed the movie business. History looks to be made at the Oscars, with women and people of color getting recognition — but there’s also room for a surprise or two.
In the winners tally, “Nomadland” is expected to be the leading film winner with four including best picture followed by “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” with three including Chadwick Boseman.
Netflix is presumed to be the leading studio with a predicted six wins, an increase from last year’s tally of four. The good news is that the streaming giant has a 50/50 shot in four additional races, which could bring them to a double-digit tally, which would be a record in the modern era (Metro-Goldwyn Mayer dominated the 1930s and 1940s).
Here are my final predictions for the 93rd Oscars.

The independent film community is not assembling under a billowy white tent for the 36th Independent Spirit Awards on the Saturday before the Oscars. Mounting a live awards show on the Santa Monica beach just wasn’t going to happen. Yes, the Oscars will give it a try April 25 via two Los Angeles hubs and another dozen or so satellite feeds around the world, but the Academy has millions to spend on safety protocols. Nonprofit arts organization Film Independent will hold the annual awards ceremony as a IFC primetime live broadcast April 22 at 7pm Pt, 10pm Et.
More people voted for the Spirits this year than ever before: Film Independent has grown to over 7,000 members, adding more international voters. Spirits have a $22.5 million budget cap; international film qualification is based on the writer, director, and producer’s country of origin. A foreign-language with an American story is not an international film; nor is “The Father.

Lee Isaac Chung, with three films under his belt, wanted to write one more screenplay before taking a teaching job in Korea. He decided to create a story inspired by his own family who moved to Arkansas when he was just a boy, hoping to give his young daughter some idea of her family’s history. Not only was that mission accomplished, but the resulting script, “Minari,” has earned Chung his first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Chung’s “Minari” screenplay will now vie for the Oscar with Aaron Sorkin‘s historical drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Emerald Fennell‘s genre-bending “Promising Young Woman,” Will Berson and Shaka King‘s historical biopic “Judas and the Black Messiah” and the drama “Sound of Metal” written by Darius Marder and his brother Abraham Marder.

“Minari” is filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung’s semi-autobiographical tale of a Korean American family starting a new life in 1980s Arkansas. The characters — Jacob played by Steven Yeun, Monica played by Yeri Han and Soonja played by Yuh-Jung Youn — live in a small mobile home on an isolated patch of land, in the hope of creating a farming business.
The Oscar-nominated director and screenwriter breaks down his favorite scene from the movie, depicting a scenario important to him and to a generation of Korean Americans who grew up in the rural South.

Lee Isaac Chung’s Oscar-nominated tale of a Korean family putting down roots in 1980s Arkansas beautifully balances the feelgood and the gritty
The title of writer-director Lee Isaac Chung’s enchanting film about a Korean family making a new start in rural 80s Arkansas refers to the tenacious edible plant that we see taking root and flourishing by a shady creek. “It’s a poetic plant,” Chung has said, not least because it “will grow very strongly in its second season, after it’s died and come back”. That theme of death and rebirth runs throughout Chung’s drama, inspired by his own family history (the minari used onscreen actually came from his father’s crop in Kansas City) and boosted by terrific performances, glowing visuals and a wonderful musical score.

“Minari” star Alan S. Kim has already captured audiences and critics’ hearts, and now the young star has landed new agents.
The eight-year-old has signed with CAA for representation in all areas.
Kim earned rave reviews for his breakout performance as David Yi in Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari,” which has been nominated for six Academy Awards, including best picture. The heartfelt and intimate family drama recently won the Golden Globe Award for best foreign language film, in addition to earning the grand jury prize and audience award at Sundance, where it premiered in 2020.
In a ridiculously cute (and now-viral) video interview, Kim opened up to Variety’s Matt Donnelly about why he auditioned for the role.
“I wanted to get a chance to just be famous and just be on video and be on a big screen,” Kim said, adding that the best advice he’s received was from...

Our predictions for the 2021 Oscar nominations proved to be almost entirely accurate. Almost all of the actors that we tipped to hear their names called are indeed among those contending for the 93rd annual Academy Awards. But we feel bad that we encouraged some famous folk just outside the top fives to set their alarms early on Monday morning only for their hopes to be dashed as they became the latest Oscar snubs.
Four SAG Awards nominated performers aren’t in contention at the Oscars: lead Amy Adams (“Hillbilly Elegy”) and supporting players Chadwick Boseman (“Da 5 Bloods”), Jared Leto (“The Little Things”) and Helena Zengel (“News of the World”). Boseman did, however, reap a lead bid for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
Critics favorite Delroy Lindo (“Da 5 Bloods”) was notably absent from the Best Actor lineup, as was Golden Globe nominee Tahar Rahim (“The Mauritanian”). Rahim’s costar, Jodie Foster,...

Daveed Diggs has been living with “Hamilton” since its first workshop in 2013. He won a Tony Award for his dual performance as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in 2016. And now in 2021, he finds himself up for a SAG Award for Disney Plus’ filmed version of the show. It’s a bit surreal for the actor, considering he hasn’t played the role in almost five years.
“That’s a totally different guy in that in that show,” Diggs says on this week’s episode of Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. “So to have it come out, and this sort of revisit that time … it’s just, it’s wild, man. I think it’s probably like a pretty rare experience. You know, an art is always viewed in the context of the time in which the viewer is viewing it. And so to have a show that was on...

If you’re reading this the day after our issue hits newsstands, the Oscar voting period is now closed. So where does it all stand?
The Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards gave their top prize to Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland,” which solidified its front-runner status. Jason Woliner’s “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” received boosts from winning the Globes’ best picture comedy prize and nabbing a surprise Producers Guild of America nomination. Still, it’ll be tricky to see the film picking up the broad support needed to land a nom in the Academy’s top category. It does, however, help star Maria Bakalova, who has become a darling of this year’s quarantine campaign trail.
Netflix walks in with multiple options, but it’s unclear how many nods it will be able to actually secure. Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” is the best bet to challenge...

Yuh-Jung Youn is a history-maker with her Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination in Best Supporting Actress for “Minari.” She is the first Korean actress to earn an individual acting nomination in SAG Awards history thanks to her standout turn as Soon-ja, the blunt grandmother of a Korean-American family living in 1980s Arkansas. The SAG bid comes after dozens of critics groups have lauded Youn with Best Supporting Actress wins. Could the legendary Korean actress translate that passion into a victory here?
Youn is not the only nominee in her category to earn SAG recognition for the first time. Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”) and Helena Zengel (“News of the World”) are in the same boat, though Youn has the benefit of also being nominated in the ensemble category as part of the cast of “Minari.” The other two competitors, Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”) and Olivia Colman (“The Father”), are big...

Composer Emile Mosseri and Minari star Yeri Han have released a new live performance video for the acclaimed film’s original song, “Rain Song.”

“Rain Song” bookends Lee Issac Chung’s “Minari,” first played as an instrumental in the film’s opening scenes, and closes out with lyrics over the film’s end credits.
Composer and songwriter Emile Mosseri intended the song to be a lullaby for Yeri Han, who plays Monica in the film. She sings it to her son, David, played by Alan S. Kim, who recently won a Critics Choice award .
With the theme of family resilience at its core, Mosseri worked with Korean translator and lyricist Stefanie Hong to give the family a theme about love and struggle.
Mosseri explains, “I was free to let that sound reveal itself to me in the experimentation process. I had written this melody for the opening of the film that I wanted to mirror in the end credits to bookend the story with a nostalgic tune. I had written a song in English...

Oscar voting started on March 5 and will continue until March 10, so before those last ballots are entered, here are 11 dark horse contenders I hope voters keep in mind for nominations.
SEEWill ‘Two of Us’ extend France’s nominations lead at Oscars for Best International Feature?
Best Actor: Delroy Lindo, “Da 5 Bloods” — It’s strange to consider him a dark horse candidate since he seemed like a safe bet just a couple of months ago. But this towering performance full of Shakespearean anger, ache, and even a soliloquy was overlooked by the Golden Globes and SAG Awards. But he deserves a seat at the table, especially since it would be the first Oscar nomination for the legendary actor.
Best Actor: Mads Mikkelsen, “Another Round” — This front-runner for Best International Feature wouldn’t work as well as it does were it not for Mikkelsen’s charisma and ability to walk such...

“Minari” got a boost in the awards race last weekend when it picked up the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, accepted virtually by director Lee Isaac Chung. The moving story of a Korean immigrant family planting new roots in rural Kansas in the 1980s began picking up acclaim way back at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020, and has been adored by audiences ever since. It’s now available on VOD and in theaters from distributor A24. Check out an exclusive featurette with director Chung and cast members Steven Yeun, Yeri Han, Yuh-jung Youn, and Alan S. Kim below.
“Steven had really transormed into Jacob, and I remember truly understanding the weight that my father had, and I thought, ‘What he is doing right now is very magical,'” said Lee Isaac Chung, who drew upon his own immigrant childhood growing up in Arkansas to write the script.

The motion picture academy has handed out Oscars for leading performances since the first ceremony in 1929. While the Best Actor prize is typically taken by a veteran, the Best Actress Oscar has tended to go to an ingenue. However, those age biases could be changing. While a whopping 32 of the 94 Best Actress champs have been in their 20s when they picked up their Oscars, the last three women to win were 60-year-old Frances McDormand, 45-year-old Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and 50-year-old Renee Zellweger (“Judy”). And Zellweger’s closest rival was 44-year-old Charlize Theron (“Bombshell”). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Actress.)
Besides Zellweger, the only other Best Actress champs in their 50s were both 54 when they won: Julianne Moore, who finally prevailed after four losses for “Still Alice” in 2015, and theater veteran Shirley Booth, who won for reprising her Tony-winning role in 1952’s “Come Back, Little Sheba.

Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari is an American film that tells the story of a Korean American family as they uproot from their more metropolitan life in California to a rural one in a small Arkansas town in search of the American dream. In case you didn’t catch on, this is a very American film.
In A24’s drama, Steven Yeun plays the patriarch of the family, Jacob, while Yeri Han plays his wife, Monica. They attempt to adjust to their new farm life with their children (played by breakout performers Alan Kim and Noel Kate Cho) but when their unfiltered and witty grandma (Yuh-jung Youn) arrives, the dynamic of the household changes.
Minari has bolstered representation of Asian American narratives and instantly gained traction with critics and audiences after making its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020, where it won the dramatic grand jury prize.

We’ll say it again: it’s been a long, strange awards season. And yet we’re about to enter the home stretch and learn just how the Academy Awards will look during a global pandemic. With the ceremony pushed to April 25, nominations are set to be announced March 15 and here is where the major races stand following nominations from the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards. Again, a reminder that any season is impossible to truly predict, particularly this extended one where the rules have changed. But here are some guesses based on industry accolades, buzz and old-fashioned gut instinct.
The Overall Picture
The films that appear to be top contenders to secure a best picture nomination include: “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” Globe winner “Nomadland,” “Mank,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Minari,” “One Night in Miami,” “News of the World,” “Promising Young Woman,” “Sound of Metal” and...

Oscar ballots will be in the hands of AMPAS voters on March 5, and they’ll have until March 10 to turn them in. All the predicting, theorizing and prognosticating have led to this crucial six-day period when the nearly 10,000 Academy members make their choices among the year’s achievements. As we head into this critical period, in a year defined by a global pandemic that has changed the way we look at cinema, we’re still reminded that movies are well worth celebrating.
Streamers provided access to some of the best films of 2020. This year, no matter what AMPAS ends up selecting as its nominees for the 93rd Academy Awards, most films will be widely available for consumers to watch before the ceremony. Cinema continues to evolve, and we can’t stop what’s coming. As with any true cinephile, my choices for what touched me from this extended eligibility are personally mine.
