DOCTOR HAYES is a multi-talented performer. He was born in the month of February in the state of Florida, USA; the second-oldest of six children. His ancestral background is a mixture of African-American, French and Seminole Indian cultures.
"DOC" was raised in Detroit, Michigan where he began his formal performing arts studies at Wayne State University. Having obtained a high-grade point average upon graduating from high school, the two-time Golden Gloves Boxing Champion was awarded several full- scholarships and a grant which financed his university education. The listing included: a four-year scholarship from The Chrysler Corporation; a Higher Education Opportunities Committee Scholarship from WSU; a Board of Governor's Grant from WSU; a Uniroyal Corporation Scholarship and The Graduate Professional Scholarship from WSU. Moreover, he was awarded the prestigious "Key to The City of Detroit" for his charitable work with the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
After completing a Bachelor's degree at WSU in Business Administration, he went on to earn a Masters of Arts degree in Speech Communication and Theater Arts. Additionally, he won The Youth Day Drama Award, sponsored by the Chrysler Corporation. Soon after, Doc served as a feature-writer for The Michigan Chronicle Newspaper. Later, he became the first African-American to enter Wayne State University's Ph.D. program in Theater Arts; completing his Doctoral requirements with a major in acting, directing, drama therapy and related subjects. Moreover, he also began his university teaching career at WSU - in its' Black Theater Program, which he co-created. There, he developed two original courses entitled: "Stage Make-up for The Black Actor I and II". And, he regularly performed as lead actor in numerous Black Theater Productions, during his tenure.
During his tenure at WSU, Doc was also quite active in both amateur and professional theatrical activities. As an undergraduate, he was among a select group of students who performed a long-running Broadway musical and variety show in Europe under the University's sponsorship. Likewise, he performed Classical to contemporary theater regularly at the school's renowned Hilberry, Bonstelle, Studio, and Studio-West theaters and at several local professional theaters; while completing other professional film, television, commercial, regional theater and summer-stock assignments (see resume for full details).
As a stand-up comedian, host, M.C. and singer/dancer, he has also performed in nightclubs and concerts with such artists as George Benson, David Ruffin, Grady Tate, Les McCann, members of The Funk Brothers and The Spinners, among others. Similarly, Doc's vocal abilities have been evidenced on recordings for Motown, Savoy, Souffle' and Stageplant Records - and with the renowned gospel concert and recording group, Donald Vails and the Choraleers. Recently, he was a lead soloist for The Pasadena City Gospel Choir; where he performed with them in concert and sang lead on their premier recording. Then too, Doc also served Pasadena City College as the featured vocal-performer in its' Studio Jazz Big Band Series.
As might be expected, Doc has continued to build an impressive list of Hollywood credits including television commercials, feature films and music videos (again, see resume). Furthermore, he has been a featured singer with the legendary, seven-time Grammy Award Winners, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr.(of "The Fifth Dimension" fame). Then too, he has sung on a live-recorded concert CD with them. DOCTOR HAYES, a never-married bachelor, is Chairman / Professor Emeritus of the Theater Arts Department at Los Angeles Valley College in Valley Glen, CA. He has also taught various theater arts subjects at Wayne State University, California State University-LA, Pepperdine University and Columbia College of Film-Hollywood among other venues. He resides in Malibu, California; where he is actively pursuing his theatrical career while directing, teaching theater arts privately and at the college and university level, singing professionally and songwriting, creating original internet media and serving as an entertainment and drama therapy consultant.
