Threequels can often be a daunting undertaking for even the most accomplished of directors, and even for franchises with decent first two installments. Candyman 3: Day of the Dead takes a fairly offensive stab at the Mexican holiday, while Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III doesn’t live up to the pre-release marketing hype about it being ‘banned’ and ‘the most controversial movie ever made’. It was neither. Even Scream 3, despite not necessarily being bad per se, is a low point considering how strong the first two movies are. On the flip side though, George Romero’s Day of the Dead is a solid follow-up to both Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, while Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead threequel Army of Darkness is a total blast. So, after Hostel: Part II grossed significantly less than the hit opening chapter, did that put any notions...

To the average childhood Archie Comics reader tuning into “Riverdale” for the first time, the sight of squeaky clean Archie Andrews (K.J. Apa) getting it on with a considerably younger Miss Grundy (Sarah Habel) certainly bucked expectations (among other things). Depending on how you feel about so-called “edgy teen dramas,” the CW’s sumptuous remake of the wholesome comic book series is either your favorite guilty pleasures or an assault on childhood nostalgia. If the CW were to engage in Hollywood’s favorite pastime of repeating successes until they lose all creative spark, there is no shortage of beloved cartoon characters to choose from for a dark reinvention.

We did not see that coming! Riverdale finally (finally finally) returned tonight, and most of the premiere was not all that much of a shock. Then we got to the end, when none other than Miss Grundy (Sarah Habel) showed right back up to get murdered. She was living across the river in Greendale, still up to her predatory ways. She was working with a student in her home, then kissed him goodbye (in a sexy and disgusting way) before sending him home. And then she turned around, only to discover the masked man there ready to strangle her. She dead! No more Miss Grundy! We feel no sadness at the loss of Miss Grundy, but someone else does. "I've noticed that a lot of the fans...

Originally, Archie Andrews and his pals at Riverdale High reflected the codification of teenage life, as they had more leisure time and disposable income. Once it hit big, the comic series and its infinite number of spinoffs, became stuck in amber, barely trying to keep up with changing trends (other than fashion) or concerns for teens. By the 2000s, the entire company was on the ropes, increasingly irrelevant in a rapidly changing world.
In comics, they threw a Hail Mary, revamping the writing and art, making the characters look and act in contemporary ways. Thanks to Mark Waid, Adam Hughes, Chip Zdarsky, and a few others, the characters were suddenly cool once more. The future does look bleak and depressing for nuclear energy.
With the beginning of the millennium, the sci-fi film Atomica plays into world’s thirst for energy.
The sci-fi thriller, directed by Dagen Merrill, features a small and known cast with Dominic Monaghan, Sarah Habel and Tom Sizemore.
It’s set in the near future, when communications go offline at a remote nuclear power plant isolated in the desert, a young safety inspector, Abby Dixon, is forced to fly out to the facility to bring it back online. Once inside the facility, mysterious clues and strange behaviors cause Abby to have certain doubts about the sanity and perhaps the identities of the two employees on site.
Earlier this month, Lrm had an exclusive phone interview with Merrill, in which we discussed using a real nuclear silo as a set location and his spectacular all-star cast.
Atomica is currently available on VOD and Digital HD today.

There are countless films set in in the future and also that deal in some way with nuclear issues, but Syfy’s Atomica introduces a future where basically everything depends on nuclear energy. While it’s a big concept, the movie is actually quite minimalist, focusing - for most of its time - on only a couple of characters; one is a young woman (Sarah Habel) who works for the company behind the nuclear energy system, while the other is a mysterious man (Dominic Monaghan) who might be just a simple employee of a power plant that requires assistance (and where the two eventually get together). Habel’s character will soon find out that this plant is not really like the others (the man in charge of it...

Atomica, the new film from director Dagen Merrill, is a small-scale, character-based science fiction movie about two people stranded together in a single location and learning to live with one another while they both possibly conceal secrets. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it could also describe the Chris Pratt/Jennifer Lawrence vehicle, Passengers, from late 2016. I make this comparison not to suggest the former copied the latter—Atomica is no “mockbuster” imitation—but instead just to say that if I had to choose between Passengers and Atomica, I’d go with Atomica.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by SyFy Films. Director: Dagen Merrill. Writers: Kevin Burke, Federico Fernandez-Armesto and Adam Gyngell. Cast: Tom Sizemore, Sarah Habel and Dominic Monaghan. Atomica is a science fiction and mystery film. From Lifeboat Productions, the film was originally titled Deep Burial. Completed for a couple of years now, the film has recently been picked up by SyFy Films, for a theatrical launch. The film stars only three actors: Tom Sizemore, Sarah Habel and Dominic Monaghan. All three actors gel well together as a nuclear power plant begins to meltdown. But, who is who and what is each characters' real motivation? The answers to these question are revealed in Act III. Along the way, the protagonist, Abby (Habel), shows that she is capable of anything and everything! Very much a Mary Sue, this central character required a few more foibles, to make her believable.

Atomica was originally titled Deep Burial. The film, from director Dagen Merrill (Beneath, 2007), stars: Tom Sizemore, Sarah Habel and Dominic Monaghan. This intriguing title has had a few theatrical showings already. The film is set for a few more on March 17th, 2017. And, the film involves a nuclear power plant, which has gone offline. An inspector finds the plant's workers, but they are acting strangely and possibly murderously. Atomica will also have a Video-on-demand launch this March 21st. The film's official trailer is hosted here. The trailer, for Atomica, is an interesting one. It shows the character Abby infiltrating the plant, which appears to be abandoned. But, one of the plant's managers eventually turns up and he may not be who he seems to be. From early reviews, the film covers a few themes. Heidi Honeycutt, at Rue Morgue, has mentioned the nihilism of this title and the cynicism: "Atomica...

Syfy Films has released an exclusive clip from its upcoming production, “Atomica.” The film, set in the near future, tells the story of young safety inspector Abby Dixon (played by Sarah Habel) who is tasked with restoring the offline communications system of a remote power plant. "Is there something you're not telling me?" "It's under control." Syfy has released a trailer for their original movie titled Atomica, that is supposedly being released into theaters and not just on TV. Atomica is set inside a nuclear power planet in the "near future", when communications go offline and mysteriously weird things start to happen inside. The cast includes Sarah Habel starring, with Tom Sizemore, Dominic Monaghan, Phil Austin, Hahn Cho and Jennifer Spriggs. I like the futuristic sci-fi look and feel of this film, but I am worried it'll probably turn out to be a big mess. The footage is interesting until it becomes confusing and it's hard to make sense of what's going on inside this weird place. Still, it's worth a quick look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Dagen Merrill's Atomica, direct from Syfy's YouTube: In the near future, when communications go offline...

It finally happened!
This is the moment I've been waiting for all season. (And it's only been four episodes...)
The affair is over. Ms. Grundy packed up her bags and hightailed it out of town on Riverdale Season 1 Episode 4. Let's savor this development for a second.
First and foremost, I don't hate the character. She had an interesting backstory for all the lies. And Sarah Habel, who portrayed Ms. Grundy, did a fine job making her seem timid yet manipulative.
This has more to do with the teacher-student affair storyline. I've seen this trope done to death before in teen dramas. I didn't want them to dive too much into this plot.
Luckily it only lasted four episodes. And we also got an extra mystery thrown in to explain this younger Ms. Grundy.
Betty: Ms. Grundy showed up in Riverdale a year ago, out of thin air. There is no record of her before that.

Dads can be so embarrassing, you know? Like when they bring out your baby pictures in front of your date, or show off a video of you dancing to the Barney theme song, or ask the teacher with whom your secretly having an illegal affair out to dinner. Archie (Kj Apa) would probably much prefer one or both of the first two options in this exclusive clip from tonight's episode of Riverdale, in which Fred (Luke Perry) practically begs Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel) to join him and his son for dinner. Now having taken in three episodes of Riverdale, something has become very apparent to me: Never, ever miss the final minutes because there’s going to be some kind of a shocker and/or crazy cliffhanger that guarantees you’ll be coming back the following week.

Jason Blossom’s murder takes center stage following the discovery of his body at the end of the series premiere of “Riverdale.” Archie (Kj Apa) is so distraught about having been unwittingly present at the scene of the crime that he can’t sleep, exacerbated by the fact that Betty (Lili Reinhart) won’t let him spill his guts to her — something she would have before she confessed her feelings for him and he rejected her last week. Oops. Instead, Archie ends up at the house of Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel) in the middle of the night, where she once again convinces him.

Now that the series premiere of Riverdale has come and gone, many of us can likely agree that it made quite the impression (just check out our review). With a solid foundation having been laid in the form of an Archie-Betty-Veronica dynamic that’s true to the source material and a killer murder mystery to boot serving as season 1’s backdrop, all eyes are on the second episode set air next week.
Granted, they did touch on a lot of the teen drama tropes last night, but it should be interesting to see if those Twin Peaks comparisons ring true now that the investigation into Jason Blossom’s death is in full swing. Although most, if not all, of the blanks will be filled in as the series progresses, we can’t help but wonder if any other juicy details will be disclosed in the upcoming prequel comic.

Knowing that the much anticipated series premiere of Riverdale is mere hours away from hitting airwaves, it comes an no surprise that yet another full clip has hit the web. Interestingly enough, it’s slightly different from the darker, moodier tone given by most promo material offered to date.
In it, we’re granted a bit of levity that shows the spirit of classic Archie comic books remains in this series. As Betty Cooper and Kevin Keller discuss the former’s upcoming date with Archie Andrews, speak of the devil, the ginger-haired young man is changing his clothes in the window directly next door, as if on cue. Being highly reminiscent of scenes from films such as Scream and American Beauty, one has to wonder how someone wouldn’t notice others peeping a stone’s throw away.

Of all the comic book adaptations that have flooded film and television in recent years, perhaps none are as ambitious as Riverdale. The CW’s attempt to transport the family-friendly cast of Archie Comics into a dark and soapy teen drama could have been disastrous, but instead, it looks to be a very promising offering, calling to mind some of the network’s greatest hits, like Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill.
Here’s six reasons why you should set your DVR for Riverdale, and prepare yourselves for a new fave.
1. A Cast of New, New Hotties (like The O.C. blessed us with)
One of the greatest things a teen drama can do is introduce viewers to a whole new cast of nearly-unknown hotties to swoon over. This is why certain segments of the population still dream of Adam Brody as the ultimate boyfriend or give Jared Leto a pass for almost anything.

In the synopsis for “Chapter Two: A Touch of Evil,” two things quickly become apparent: Archie Andrews’ life is extremely complicated and the murder mystery gripping the quaint town does indeed seem to serve as the backdrop for the inaugural season. Although we expect interesting developments each week, our better judgment says the unraveling of this enigma will be a marathon, not a sprint.
Speaking of the official description, you can check it out below:
As new details of Jason’s death begin to emerge, Archie (Kj Apa) pleads with Miss Grundy (guest star Sarah Habel) to come forward with what they heard at Sweetwater River.

Dagen Merrill's latest movie has gone by a lot of names since we first heard about it last year. Once known as Half Life and then Deep Burial, the sci-fi thriller has been re-titled Atomica and with the shiny new name comes some release news.
The movie, which stars Dominic Monaghan, Tom Sizemore and Sarah Habel, has been picked up by Syfy which plans to release it in theaters on March 17 followed by VOD and Digital HD on March 21. Though it has yet to be announced, I expect a release on Syfy won't be too far behind.
In Atomica, Habel plays Abby Dixon, a safety inspector who is sent to fix the communications network at a remote nuclear power plant isolated in the desert. "Once inside the facility, mysterious clues and strange behavior cause Abby to have [Continued ...]...

With trailers dropping left and right, as well as spinoff chatter already occurring, Riverdale is easily one of the most anticipated new shows to premiere at the midseason mark. And considering that Archie Comics are currently enjoying a creative renaissance, it couldn’t have come at a more opportune time.
The latest round of promotional material comes in the form of six new character photos featuring the likes of Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Cheryl Blossom, Jughead Jones, and Josie McCoy. Capturing the moody and dramatic tone of the series, the images somehow manage to be dark and vibrant at the same time, so kudos go to The CW and their photographers for pulling off such a feat.

There are about a million ways that The CW’s Riverdale — a slick new reboot of the classic Archie comics — could’ve gone horribly wrong. (See: NBC’s Emerald City.) And yet the new year is full of surprises, because Riverdale (premiering Thursday, Jan. 26 at 9/8c) actually turns out to be an artfully crafted, instantly engaging teen soap with loads of potential.
It’s an unexpected revival, to be sure, because the original comic-book hi-jinks of 1950s teens Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead are about as dated as sock hops and chocolate malts. But the Archie comics have been given...

Although it certainly took a while for us to get a substantial trailer for The CW’s next major comic book adaptation to hit airwaves, Riverdale, we’re slowly but surely being granted more looks into this reimagined world now that the floodgates have been opened, so to speak.
If anything, this perpetuates the painting of a darker picture, one that has already made fans of classic Archie Comics a bit skeptical. We can’t help but to say their concerns have some validity, but on the other hand, this sure does look like some compelling television. And, to be quite honest, any show that has the cult hit Supernatural serving as its lead-in is going to require an edge.
This recently circulated promo, however, shows that the optimism the source material is known for will still likely be present despite the footage provided dripping with love triangle drama. But then again,...

Sex. Mystery. More sex.
That's what I'm seeing when I watch this teaser for the upcoming series on The CW, Riverdale.
Let's just say this is Not the Archie, Jughead and the gang I remember from the comics I read as a kid. Nosiree Bob!
Suffice it to say, I might have read more comics if that was the case. Just sayin' what everybody else is thinking right about now. Wth is this and how does it relate to those poor, doofy kids from Riverdale? They share names. Wear kitty outfits.
Here's the big, huge, official word from The CW on what to expect, infused with some photos.
As a new school year begins, the town of Riverdale is reeling from the recent, tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom — and nothing feels the same…
Archie Andrews (Kj Apa) is still the all-American teen, but the summer...

Aside from The CW recently rolling out its midseason schedule, it had really been some time since we received any real news regarding the network’s next foray into the comic book realm in the form of Riverdale. Luckily, a new trailer has just hit the web.
The new footage, while featuring some nice cinematography, paints a more somber picture than what classic Archie Comics fans might be used to. Then again, we already knew this series was going for a more subversive tone and will instead reflect the recently rebooted, more dramatic Archie line of comic books with a pinch of Twin Peaks influence.
Despite the network’s strong lean toward DC Entertainment, we expect the same level of quality for Riverdale given that Arrowverse executive producer Greg Berlanti is on board, a man who seemingly has the Midas Touch when it comes to comic book adaptations on the small screen.

“From a distance it presents itself like so many other small towns all over the the world, safe, decent, innocent. Get closer though, and you start seeing the shadows underneath.” Those are the first words audiences hear from the dark and twisted trailer for the CW’s new show, “Riverdale.”
Set in present day and based on the iconic Archie Comics characters, the drama is a surprising and subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring the surrealism of small-town life — the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome façade.
In the first trailer, fans get introduced to a handful of its characters and a murder that has recently taken place. You can watch it by clicking here.

Although San Diego Comic-Con won’t officially be in full swing until tomorrow, preview night festivities kick off in a matter of hours. Those lucky enough to be in attendance will be the first to see a screening of the Riverdale pilot, which stars Kj Apa as the iconic Archie Andrews.
Thanks to Archie Comics’ official Twitter feed, we have been treated to a look at a poster being used to promote the screening at Sdcc. Drawn by Afterlife with Archie artist Francesco Francavilla, it seems to perfectly capture the tone of the show, which has been described to be a bit darker, dramatic, and subversive. Among those pictured are Archie himself, Jughead Jones, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, and series villain Cheryl Blossom.
For those of us who have to wait to see the pilot episode, here’s a detailed synopsis:
