Veteran film executive Paul Davidson has acquired the remake rights to “Electric Dreams,” the 1984 film written and produced by Rusty Lemorande.

Davidson — who previously ran The Orchard and Idw Entertainment — struck the deal with Lemorande, who retained the rights to the film after its release nearly four decades ago. Brian T. Arnold, whose script “In the End” appeared on the 2021 Black List and is being produced by Sister, will pen the new movie.

In a statement, Davidson described the original “Electric Dreams” as “an iconic film that left a deep imprint on me from the first time I saw it.” He adds: “Released in what is clearly one of the best decades for film ever, it remains a classic that feels especially prescient today. Joining forces with Brian and Rusty is immensely exciting.”

The suspense thriller, which is set in the worlds of politics, Ivy League academia, and the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard, centers on Talcott Garland, an Ivy League law professor whose quiet life is shattered when his father, Judge Oliver Garland, dies of an apparent heart attack. The nature of the judge’s death is questioned by Tal’s sister, Mariah, a former journalist and inveterate conspiracy theorist, who believes that the judge, a failed Black nominee to the Supreme Court, met with foul play.

The network has handed the adaptation of Stephen L. Carter’s best-selling novel a 10-episode series order. It comes from Shameless writer Sherman Payne, John Wells Productions and Warner Bros. Television.

It comes after the project was unveiled in development at the start of the year as the Amazon-owned company rebranded from Epix to MGM+.

“Emperor of Ocean Park,” the best-selling novel by Stephen L. Carter, is being adapted into a TV series at MGM+.

MGM+ (formerly Epix) has ordered 10 episodes of the show. The order brings the book’s long road to the screen to near completion. It was originally optioned back in 2001 ahead of the book publishing. Multiple attempts have since been made to adapt the book into a film and later a television series, though none of those projects have moved forward until now.

Exclusive: Lionsgate has acquired worldwide rights to Scrambled, written by and starring Leah McKendrick, who makes her feature directorial debut on the comedy, which just wrapped filming.

Produced by Jonathan Levine and Gillian Bohrer’s Megamix, along with Brett Haley and Amanda Mortimer, and executive producer Mariah Owen, the film stars McKendrick as Nellie Robinson, a broke, single 34-year-old, fresh off a breakup, who faces down an existential crisis when she decides to freeze her eggs. McKendrick wrote the script following her own egg-retrieval experience last year.

The ensemble cast includes Ego Nwodim, Andrew Santino (Dave), Clancy Brown, Laura Cerón, Adam Rodriguez, Yvonne Strahovski (Handmaid’s Tale), June Diane Raphael, Noah Silver (Tyrant), and Sterling Sulieman (Station 19). The cast also includes Max Adler, Mimi Kennedy, Camille Mana, and Matt Pascua.

Exclusive: Chloe Bailey (Grown-ish) has signed on to star in the upcoming film Praise This, which Tina Gordon (Little) is directing for Universal Pictures.

Praise This is a music-competition feature comedy set in the world of youth choirs. We hear that Universal is eyeing it for a potential franchise in the vein of Pitch Perfect, with production on the first installment set to kick off in Atlanta in June. Gordon penned the latest draft of the script, which was based off an original idea by The Story Company. Earlier drafts were written by Camilla Blackett and Brandon Broussard, Hudson Obayuwana and Jana Savage—the trio otherwise known as Murder Ink.

The film falls under Will Packer Productions’ first-look deal with Universal, which has produced such hits as Night School, Girls Trip, the Ride Along films and Little. Wpp’s founder and CEO Will Packer will produce alongside The Story Company’s co-founder and CEO Tim Story, with Wpp EVP Johanna Byer exec producing. Executive Vice President of Production Erik Baiers and Director of Production Development Tony Ducret will oversee the project on behalf of Universal.

Bailey is an actress, singer-songwriter and record producer who rose to fame as a member of the Grammy-nominated sister duo Chloe x Halle, which was signed to Beyoncés Parkwood Entertainment Company after catching the attention of the musical icon. The multi-hyphenate most recently starred alongside Yara Shahidi on Freeform’s hit show Grown-ish, last year releasing her debut solo single, “Have Mercy.” She will next be seen in Miramax’s supernatural thriller The Georgetown Project, with Russell Crowe and Ryan Simpkins.

In addition to Little, starring Regina Hall, Issa Rae and Marsai Martin, Gordon previously wrote and directed the 2013 romantic comedy Peeples for Lionsgate. Her credits as a screenwriter also include Drumline and What Men Want.

Joel Edgerton will star in a new “Dark Matter” series adaptation as a physicist who suddenly finds himself in an alternate version of his life, Apple TV+ announced on Tuesday. Blake Crouch will serve as writer and showrunner on the series, which is based on his 2016 novel. Matt Tolmach executive produces along with David Manpearl.

Crouch will write the pilot script and Louis Leterrier is set to direct the first four episodes of the nine-episode series.

Exclusive: Amblin Partners has acquired the film rights to Upgrade, the upcoming sci-fi/thriller from bestselling author Blake Crouch. Crouch will adapt the screenplay and is also attached to exec produce. Sources say the auction was highly competitive with several other studios and streamers in the mix before Amblin ultimately won the bid.

The novel follows a brother and sister, both unwittingly enhanced with genetically engineered upgrades, who square off against each other in a dangerous battle of conflicting schemes to save humanity from itself. Upgrade will be published by Ballantine Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House, on July 12. The project was brought into the studio by Kim under his first-look deal with the studio, and it is the first project in development for 3Ad under the pact.

Written by Hamedani and Betz, the genre-bending Tether follows the terrifying journey of Madelyn Woods, a woman driven to find her kidnapped husband and son and extract revenge on those who hurt them… and murdered her. Howard is a veteran of the horror genre and a frequent collaborator of Mike Flanagan, and is exec producer on the filmmaker’s upcoming Netflix series Midnight Mass. Shonda Rhimes and Matt Reeves are developing Blake Crouch’s upcoming science-fiction novel “Recursion” as a feature film and television series for Netflix.

The deal was announced Thursday. Netflix has secured the rights to “Recursion” for Rhimes and Betsy Beers’ Shondaland and Reeves’ 6th & Idaho. “Recursion” will be published by Crown on June 11.

“Recursion” explores what happens when a brilliant female scientist invents a powerful technology that allows people not just to reactivate their most visceral memories but to reinvent them entirely. Netflix has landed the rights to Blake Crouch’s upcoming novel Recursion for Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beer’s Shondaland and Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho which they will develop as a feature film as well as a television universe. Recursion will hit book shelves from Crown on June 11, 2019.

Recursion marks the first film project announced under Shondaland since seguing from ABC to Netflix last year in a multi-year deal; in July the label announced the eight series she has in development with the streaming studio. The project returns Rhimes to her filmmaking roots; she wrote wrote the story and screenplay for the late Garry Marshall’s The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement as well as the Britney Spears 2002 feature Crossroads. Gabriel Luna, Diego Boneta and Natalia Reyes will join Skydance Media’s upcoming Terminator movie opposite Arnold Schwarzengger and Linda Hamilton.

“Deadpool” director Tim Miller is attached with James Cameron and David Ellison producing. Specific details on the characters are being kept under wraps but the movie will be a direct sequel to Cameron’s 1991 film “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” with Schwarzenegger and Hamilton anchoring the story.

The untitled film will open Nov. 22, 2019, and be distributed domestically by Paramount Pictures and internationally by Fox.

Luna starred as Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider on the ABC action superhero series “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” as well as the El Rey Network drama series “Matador” and the ABC crime drama series “Wicked City.” He also starred in the films “Freeheld” and “Transpecos.”

Producer James Cameron and director Tim Miller have signed on Gabriel Luna in the title role of the “Terminator” reboot, an individual with knowledge of the project tells The Wrap. Luna is best known for starring as Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider on the ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Colombian actress Natalia Reyes also joins the cast as a working-class woman caught between humans and machines in the war for dominance. Reyes broke out on the soap opera “Lady, La Vendedora de Rosas” and will next be seen in the film “Birds of Passage,” which will premiere as the opening film at the Director’s Fortnight in Cannes. “Birds of Passage” is directed by Ciro Guerra.

Luna and Reyes join a cast that includes original “Terminator” stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, as well as “Blade Runner 2049” star Mackenzie Davis. “Scream Queens” and “Rock of Ages” star Diego Boneta is also on board in an undisclosed role.

Miller, who directed “Deadpool,” will shoot the film with series creator Cameron returning to the franchise as a producer for the first time since 1991’s “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.”

The “Terminator” reboot is the sixth film in the long-running sci-fi series, with Skydance producing and Paramount distributing. The release date was moved last week from July 2019 to Nov. 22, 2019.

Millennium Films announced today that Rod Lurie (Straw Dogs, Nothing but the Truth) has been tapped to direct Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson’s (The Fighter) adaption of Jake Tapper’s The Outpost: An Untold Story Of American Valor.

Paul Merryman developed the script, which Tamasy and Johnson co-wrote, and will produce alongside Tamasy and Marc Frydman under their Battle Plan Productions banner. Jeffrey Greenstein, Jonathan Yunger, Les Weldon, and Matt O’Toole are also producing for Millennium Films, with John Thompson, Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, and Yariv Lerner executive producing.

Exclusive: Wolf Creek 2 has found a Us home after Image Entertainment swooped on rights at the Afm.

Greg Mclean returns to direct the sequel to his 2005 cult horror starring John Jarratt as homicidal bushman Mick Taylor who preys on backpackers in the Australian Outback.

Jarratt is back in the role and stars alongside Shannon Ashlyn, Ryan Corr, and Phillipe Klaus.

Mclean and Aaron Sterns co-wrote the screenplay and produced with Helen Leake and Steve Topic. Wolf Creek 2 is scheduled for a 2014 release.
