Are disaster movies about climate change getting more realistic, or is the real world simply starting to resemble a disaster movie about climate change? To judge by Mahalia Belo’s “The End We Start From,” a despairing and all-too-conceivable thriller in which an unnamed woman (Jodie Comer) struggles to protect her newborn baby after a massive flood makes the whole of England go a little “Children of Men,” the answer to that question is regrettably “both.” Ah, how I long for the days when a Hollywood blockbuster about Jake Gyllenhaal trying to survive a now-routine New York weather system was marketed as a piece of escapism.

On Wednesday’s 10th episode of “Survivor 45,” it was time for another blindside on original Belo as Emily Flippen devised a plan to make Bruce Perreault feel so comfortable in the vote that he might not play his hidden immunity idol. After stubbornly playing the game for 20+ days, Bruce decided to trust someone else and opted out of saving himself at Tribal Council, causing him to be the next in “Survivor” history to be go home with an idol in their pocket. Read on for Bruce’s “Survivor 45” exit interview from the end of the episode.

Heading into the 10th episode of “Survivor 45,” Kendra McQuarrie had just been voted out at tribal council by all of her fellow players. With the numbers solidly in Reba’s hands, did tonight’s elimination end up being just another paint-by-numbers game move from the dominant alliance?

On Wednesday’s ninth episode of “Survivor 45,” lines had been drawn among original tribal lines and that meant that old Belo was left with the short end of the stick. When Jeff Probst dropped the bomb at the immunity challenge that three players would potentially lose their vote, how the next vote would go was left up in the air. With immunity falling once again around the unanimous target’s neck, Kendra McQuarrie became the next best thing for the old Reba alliance. Read on for Kendra’s “Survivor 45” exit interview from the end of the episode.
Prior to the immunity challenge that gave Bruce Perreault safety for the second cycle in a row, he was the unanimous target among a tribe of people itching to flush his idol out of the game. The challenge also determined that both Emily Flippen and Katurah Topps lost their votes, leaving the vote open to only seven ballots.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Survivor Season 45 Episode 9, “Sword of Damocles.”] Getting Bruce Perreault out and breaking up the Reba alliance are proving to be Survivor 45’s biggest battles. For two weeks in a row now, Bruce has been on the chopping block but curtailed those plans by winning individual immunity. In both Episode 8 and Episode 9, a Belo woman has been sent home in his place. When Kaleb Gebrewold tried to break up the Reba alliance in Episode 7, he was eliminated. As of Episode 9, the Reba foursome is in an impressively strong spot. Their unbreakable bond and majority alliance allows them to set their sights on a target and eliminate it. With Bruce ineligible for votes, they set their eyes Jake O’Kane and Kendra McQuarrie, who each did something to piss off a Reba member. Jake tried to get Julie out ...

No Beware Advantages here: In addition to taking a big L and being vulnerable at the vote, Emily, Austin and Katurah then had to contend with not having a say as to who went home.

In last week’s episode of “Survivor 45,” Jake O’Kane and Kaleb Gebrewold wrote down Julie Alley‘s name at tribal council in the hopes that Katurah Topps would join them and create a three-three tie. Unfortunately for the two guys, Katurah stuck with Julie, Austin Li Coon and Dee Valladares and the four of them ousted Kaleb. Now, Jake is in hot water with Julie as they get back to camp, because he has to explain why he tried to vote her out. Watch the “Survivor 45” preview video above.
“First and foremost, that was not a personal thing whatsoever,” Jake tells her after getting back to camp. “I understand this kind of like puts us at odds game-wise, and that’s fine … It was more of, can I get Kaleb to stay, rather than, can I get Julie to leave? I understand I lied to your face all day, and I get that.

It was clear last week on “Survivor 45” that Kaleb Gebrewold had his work cut out for him – after being the first player to successfully play his Shot in the Dark and negating the entire merged tribe’s 11 votes against him – if he was going to survive another tribal council in the game. Alas, he could not get it done, though his final nail in the coffin turned out to be an unexpected factor in one player that he was close to, ultimately deciding the direction of the game. In addition, there was another split tribal council with a twist in the jury phase with another castaway being sent home. Let’s break down all the social dynamics in the Top 10 as the merge officially begins.

With 10 players remaining in the quest to become “Survivor 45” champ, the competition finally turns to a truly individual game when Episode 8, “Following a Dead Horse to Water,” airs on Wednesday, November 15. In the last two weeks, the merged tribes of Belo, Reba and Lulu had group immunity or were split when it came to the vote, so this will be the first time that every player is vulnerable to elimination. Original Reba, consisting of Austin Li Coon, Dee Valladares, Drew Basile and Julie Alley, have a numbers advantage so long as original Lulu member Emily Flippen and Belo turncoat Katurah Topps continue to work with them. That would leave the remaining Belo players, Bruce Perreault, Jake O’Kane, Kellie Nalbandian and Kendra McQuarrie, as the odd ones out.
Whether tribal lines stick and for how long, there are bound to be peaks and valleys in each player’s struggle to gain power in the game.

On Wednesday’s seventh episode of “Survivor 45,” Jeff Probst threw another twist at the 12 castaways. He randomly divided them into two groups of six and then had them compete for two individual immunity necklaces that would protect them from the two Tribal Councils that would see two players going home. As the unanimous decision to go home at the previous cycle, Kaleb Gebrewold became the easy vote for his group to make and though it wasn’t a slam dunk this time, he was finally sent packing. ‘Survivor 45’ episode 7 recap: Which 2 people were voted out in ‘The Thorn in My Thumb’? [Live Blog]
Heading into the seventh episode of “Survivor 45,” the three tribes had finally come together in a merge following the ouster of J. Maya Krishnan-Jha. (after Kaleb Gebrewold negated a record 11 votes with his Shot in the Dark). That left just 12 people still in the game. But that number was about to be cut down to 10 after the castaways learned that this week would be a double elimination.

Kaleb Gebrewold made Survivor history in Season 45 Episode 6. For the first time ever, a Shot in the Dark reached its full potential, completely canceling out the 11 unanimous votes against him. Because he was safe, the players had to scramble and vote again, ultimately sending J. Maya home. Surprisingly, Kaleb isn’t the prime target for elimination in the TV Insider exclusive clip from Survivor Season 45 Episode 7 (above), airing on Wednesday, November 8 on CBS. Rather, it’s Bruce Perrault “in the hot seat.” Jake O’Kane and Kellie Nalbandian make a plan to get Kaleb on their side in the clip above, admitting that Bruce, their fellow original member of Belo, could be a liability in this effort. Bruce found the newly merged tribe’s new idol last week and shared that information with basically everyone but Katurah Topps, his nemesis. The plot against Kaleb was concocted by Bruce, but Emily Flippen...

On Wednesday’s sixth episode of “Survivor 45,” the three tribes of Belo, Reba and Lulu joined together at one beach for the pre-merge. At the immunity challenge, the castaways were divided into two teams where seven earned immunity and a spot in the merged tribe and six others were left vulnerable to the looming vote. After a historic “Shot in the Dark” by Kaleb Gebrewold for immunity, J. Maya Krishnan-Jha became the plan B in a second vote and was eliminated from the game. Read on for J. Maya’s “Survivor 45” exit interview from the end of the episode.
On her way out, J. Maya narrated what her Tribal Council fate, summing it up as “a unanimous vote for Kaleb. He got saved through a Shot in the Dark. I guess I was the collateral damage in the re-vote.” But her impression that she was just “collateral damage” is not entirely accurate.

On Wednesday’s fifth episode of “Survivor 45,” the Belo tribe made their first trip to Tribal Council. As the post-swap tribe most evenly mixed with two original Reba, two original Belo and one original Lulu, the vote was a split decision between which original tribe would be allowed to keep their full numbers in the game. With a gutsy move to sway another castaway in his direction, original Belo member Brando Meyer proved to the others that he was playing too hard and was voted out. Read on for Brando’s “Survivor 45” exit interview from the end of the episode.
Brando’s strategy at the new Belo tribe was to test his connections with new people since he saw his connection to Kendra McQuarrie as one of the weakest from his original tribe. His first attempt to build something new was with a “nerd alliance” with Drew Basile (original Reba...

Wednesday’s episode featured empty bellies, rogue Tribal votes and a bout of passing out, but none of these island stressors caused anyone to quit the game. That’s right, Survivor, fans! No one quit in Episode 5, and for that we are truly blessed.

If you were confused by the vote at the end of the fourth episode of “Survivor 45,” you’re not alone. This week, members of the new Reba tribe visited tribal council for the first time — that is, all of them but Sean Edwards, who had lost every single immunity challenge up to that point. But even after Sean announced his decision to quit and return home to his husband, the votes didn’t go according to plan. Sean received three of the five votes, while Dee Valladares received one and Nicholas “Sifu” Alsup received one. Huh?
As a voted-out Sean was standing up to give his goodbye hugs, Sifu appeared visibly confused. “Who voted for Sifu?” he wondered aloud. “Did you vote for me?” he asked Sean, who responded with a quick, “No.” When Sean brought his torch up to Jeff Probst to be snuffed, Sifu was seen whispering, “Wow.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Survivor Season 45 Episode 4, “Music to My Ears.”] Even a tribe swap couldn’t stop an original Lulu member from being voted out in Survivor 45’s fourth episode. If it’s any consolation, the new Lulu wasn’t sent to Tribal Council (the “Lulu loser” streak is over — they won an immunity challenge!), but an original bearer of a yellow buff became the fourth consecutive Lulu member to be voted out. And Jeff Probst were not pleased when that player asked to be voted out like Hannah in the premiere. Jeff gathered the three teams for what they thought was a challenge, but it turned out to be a tribe swap. Players randomly selected buffs wrapped in burlap from a bowl to create new teams. The results were Emily going to Belo (the only new tribe with members from all three previous groups), Kaleb staying at Lulu, and Sean going ...

It begins as a spatter of heavy rainfall — nothing out of the ordinary for acclimatized Brits, for whom an actual storm can even be cozily welcome after days of noncommittal drear and drizzle. But then it doesn’t stop, deep-set wet turns to invasive flooding, and what seemed a mere bout of inclement weather has swept you — and countless others like you — out of house and home. Megan Hunter’s speculative novel “The End We Start From” was a neat metaphor for the larger threat in seemingly minor signifiers of climate crisis; briskly adapted by screenwriter Alice Birch, Mahalia Belo’s fine film version matches its pragmatic, coolly urgent vision of a world coming apart slowly, gradually, and then all at once.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Survivor Season 45 Episode 2, “Brought a Bazooka to a Tea Party.”] Survivor 45 learned a valuable lesson from Survivor 44: let the cast be the stars. The second episode of Season 45 did just that, allowing viewers to get to know every player in a way that previously took several episodes. What’s more: the original Survivor main title sequence returned after a hiatus, delighting viewers. Whatever recipe CBS was following with this episode, we ask that they keep using it. Last week ended with Hannah’s shocking self-elimination. She realized the old Survivor adage was true: the game looks much easier when you’re watching from your couch. That theme continued this week as Brandon struggled to pull out a win during any challenge, both group and individual. The majority of the episode delightfully focused on the goings on at the beaches for the three teams, Reba, Belo, and Lulu. Much of...

After 44 seasons and 23 years on the air, “Survivor” is finally updating its sit-out rule.
“It used to be that the sit-out would reset after a tribal council,” host Jeff Probst informed the “Survivor 45” castaways during Wednesday night’s second episode. “So here’s the new rule. You cannot sit out of back-to-back challenges, period. So whoever sits out of this challenge will run in the next challenge. Make sense?”
The rule change is a direct result of what happened in “Survivor 44,” when Claire Rafson sat out of three consecutive challenges, resulting in her tribe voting her out unanimously. The audience uproar prompted Probst to announce on his “On Fire” podcast last spring that the rule “does need to be updated.”

Hey, "Survivor" fans. Tonight, September 27, 2023, the premier episode 1 of Survivor's current season 45 did indeed hit the air, and we saw the first contestant get voted off at the very end, but this was an unusual vote-off. Tonight's premiere episode kicked off with the usual introductions of the new contestants. It was revealed that Bruce Perreault from last season 44 was brought back since he got injured and left early. The tribe names were announced. They are: Reba, Lulu and Belo. The first reward challenge kicked off right after the intros. During it, they had to empty a large crate of heavy sandbags and ropes. Then, they had to retrieve a key from the large crate. Next, they had to swim out to a boat and paddle it back, clip it to the large boat and climb onto it via a little rope/step latter.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Survivor Season 45 premiere.] Well, that was easy. The first tribal council of Survivor Season 45 featured a shocking self-elimination that led to no votes being cast on night one. And it wasn’t the player who blacked out during the first challenge of the season, but it was someone from his tribe, Lulu (yellow). Contestants were coming in hot from the first moments of Survivor 45. Emily on Lulu came to win, with her cutthroat strategy making its debut in a challenge to Bruce on the boat before the first reward challenge. While Bruce claimed he had no real advantage because he played less than 24 hours in the previous season, Emily argued the opposite. Everyone knowing who he was, she said, was a major plus. But it seemed she was more intent on making an early impression than she was committed to this ...

Wednesday night on CBS, Jeff Probst officially lit the torch on the 45th season of “Survivor.” Just like all of the “new era” cycles, this year’s crop of 18 contestants have been divided into three tribes and come from diverse backgrounds and walks of life. Due in part to the writers’ and actors’ strikes, all episodes will be 90 minutes long this season, a first for the franchise. In the season premiere, viewers met the new castaways and found out who had the unfortunate title of being the first person voted out of Fiji.

Spoiler Alert: This recap contains spoilers from the Season 45 premiere of “Survivor.”
Every episode of “Survivor” contains a healthy handful of platitudes about how wild the game is, and the Season 45 premiere is no different. But when Jeff Probst says that he doesn’t know if he’s ever seen so much energy from a new cast, a shot of a contestant open-mouth sobbing before the first challenge has even begun makes it hard to disagree.
Among the first personalities to stand out are Jake, the lawyer-bartender-theater teacher dreaming of moving out of his grandmother’s house; Brandon, the tearful superfan who loves the game of “Survivor” more than anything; and Emily, who feels the opposite: “If I’m not gonna win the game, I would rather be the first person voted off. It’s a complete waste of time if you’re not the sole survivor. Excuse me for being honest.
