Emmy-nominated veteran actor Harris Yulin had another major TV role lined up when he died suddenly of cardiac arrest on June 10 at the age of 87 — he was set a lead opposite Kevin Kline, Joe Tenney and Laura Linney in the upcoming MGM+ comedy American Classic. The half-hour series, from creators/executive producers Michael Hoffman and Bob Martin, had just started production in New York on Monday, with Yulin preparing to start filming his role this week before his passing.
Shooting on American Classic, from Fifth Season, with Mar-Key Pictures, Likely Story and Anonymous Content, is continuing. The schedule has been adjusted around Yulin’s scenes as the producing team is regrouping to figure out next steps, sources tell Deadline. The role Yulin was supposed to play, Linus, will likely be recast.

Amazon Prime Video’s newest A24-backed show, Overcompensating, was promoted as a coming-of-age comedy drama full of emotional awakenings, cringe-comedy, and campus chaos. But as soon as you press play on the pilot, Benito Skinner, playing an 18-year-old college freshman, does not make sense. While there’s no denying Skinner is a talented comedian with a remarkable social media presence, casting him as a teenager fresh out of high school might’ve been a stretch too big.
He might’ve felt like the right fit for the role to other creators of the series, but one can’t help but notice how very awkward his portrayal is. It doesn’t matter if he throws on a graphic tee or clenches his jaw; none of that will successfully mask the age gap.
Benito Skinner does not look 18 in Overcompensating

John Carver will return to kill again in a sequel to Eli Roth's 2023 slasher movie Thanksgiving. The sequel has been in development for a while now, basically since the first movie released.
Debuting to critical acclaim and a decent box office return, Sony Pictures quickly revealed he would be cooking up a follow-up film and even posted the announcement on his Instagram page in November 2023. In his post, he confirmed that the movie would be released in fall 2025, but that date has started to seem impossible as updates on the sequel remain few and far between.
Well, we finally have something new to share about the film from star Nell Verlaque who plays one of the film's few survivors, Jessica, daughter of store owner Thomas Wright (Rick Hoffman).

Get a head start on the fall festivities with the Thanksgiving: John Carver’s Carving Board Game from Fright-Rags.
Based on Eli Roth‘s Thanksgiving, the game is designed by Roth and Jon Cohn. It features cover art by Zachary Jackson Brown and a layout by Fright-Rags’ Joe Guy Allard.
3-12 players start by attending a department store Black Friday sale that quickly gets out of hand, with people horrifically dying in every aisle. But things go from bad to worse, because a killer wearing a John Carver mask is also on the loose murdering the townsfolk in droves.
Players are rewarded for dying… a lot! The player who dies the most is revealed to be John Carver, triggering a final battle between the rest of the players and the killer.

Thanksgiving star Nell Verlaque is excited to get back to the dinner table for another serving. Eli Roth’s schedule has been filling up considerably lately (possibly to wash his mouth out after Borderlands). Next up for Roth is the slasher film The Ice Cream Man. Additionally, his Knock Knock will be getting a German remake and, as part of a deal with Construction Films, he’ll also be directing Final Cut, a giallo-style feature that will star German actress Veronica Ferres, who founded the studio. A sequel to his Grindhouse-trailer-turned-feature was in the cards, but it will be starting much sooner than you think.
Variety reports that Nell Verlaque revealed that filming on Thanksgiving 2 is attempting to commence this year. Verlaque told the publication that she’s read parts of the screenplay and shared that her and Roth bounced ideas off each other. She explained, “I would...

With Thanksgiving months away, Nell Verlaque is getting ready for a second serving of Eli Roth‘s seasonal slasher.
At last Wednesday’s premiere of Prime Video‘s Overcompensating, the actress told Deadline that she’s “really excited” to get into production on the sequel to 2023’s Thanksgiving, which she hopes to film after completing production on her upcoming MGM+ series American Classic.
“I think we will be filming this year,” said Verlaque on the red carpet at the Hollywood Palladium. “I actually just saw Eli, and we’re talking about some plot points, so I’m really excited for it.”
With the first installment surpassing $46 million worldwide and Certified Fresh at 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, Roth announced a sequel on Instagram a few weeks after the original’s premiere in November 2023.

With Eli Roth directing the upcoming horror films Ice Cream Man and Final Cut for his own company The Horror Section, you might be wondering if his studio slasher franchise Thanksgiving has fallen by the wayside. Last we heard, Roth would be returning to direct Thanksgiving 2 for Sony and Spyglass, but what’s the latest on the holiday slasher sequel?
Thanksgiving star Nell Verlaque, who will return for the sequel, says in a new chat with Variety that she expects filming to take place on Thanksgiving 2 later this year.
“There is a script. I know that the goal is to film it this year,” Verlaque tells the outlet.
The actress notes, “[Eli Roth’s] a great director. I told him I really wanted to be tortured… like fully pain, tortured [in the sequel]. I would like to get covered in blood. I’ve read certain parts of [the script] and… he’s told me a few of the ideas.

“Thanksgiving” star Nell Verlaque can’t wait to shoot the sequel to the surprise box office hit.
Her character Jessica is one of the few who survived director and co-writer Eli Roth’s first Turkey-time holiday slasher.
Verlaque tells me she’s read parts of the follow-up script and Roth has shared some more ideas with her.
“I would like to get covered in blood,” she told me at the premiere of Benito Skinner’s new Prime Video comedy series, “Overcompensating.”
That’s the least gruesome of her ideas. “I told him I really wanted to be tortured,” Verlaque said. “Like fully pained [and] tortured.”
She said of Roth’s boundary-pushing work, “I think it’s more fun as an actor. The crazier, the better for me.”
The first film revolved around a serial killer who dresses like a 17th-century pilgrim and terrorizes residents of Plymouth, Mass., during the holiday season.

Benito Skinner's comedy-routine-turned-tv-show, Overcompensating, is a hit with critics and viewers alike. Only four days after debuting on Prime Video, the show is certified fresh at 94% and 83% by viewers. There is a significant gap between critical and audience reception for the college-set comedy, but it's not big enough to tell a conflicting story. The numbers indicate that the show is being enjoyed by most viewers, giving it a great chance at scoring a second-season renewal. It's still early to know how the show is performing, but those numbers should be out soon, and maybe viewers will learn what happened after that massive cliffhanger involving Carmen (Wally Baram) and the revelation of a huge personal secret.
The eight-episode first season ensemble centers around Benny (Skinner), "a closeted former football player and homecoming king, as he becomes fast friends with Carmen, a high school outsider on a mission to fit in at all costs.

Despite the Britney Spears music cue to start the show, it’s not luck that landed Benito Skinner — aka Benny Drama — his very own Prime Video comedy series. Still, the “Overcompensating” creator, star and executive producer feels very lucky to have assembled such an all-star cast, all of whom shined on the yellow carpet at the Palladium Theater premiere in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.
“I just approached it by picking whoever was perfect for the role. If you make me laugh on my phone, I want you in it, I want friends in it, comedians I’m obsessed with who haven’t gotten their platform to shine, just people I love so much. Whether they’re from the Internet or not, let’s put the funniest people in this,” he told TheWrap. “Whatever I did, I’ll do it again. This is insane, I’m so lucky.”

Eli Roth is ready to make Thanksgiving 2. The filmmaker recently offered an update on the forthcoming slasher sequel while reflecting on the original movie's success on its one-year anniversary.
In an interview with IndieWire, Roth opened up about his slasher movie Thanksgiving, which was based on his fake movie trailer from Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's Grindhouse, turning one year old. He also teased the upcoming sequel, which was announced shortly after the original opened in theaters. Roth confirmed that the screenplay for the Thanksgiving follow-up was written (once again by Jeff Rendell) and that it would be a proper sequel instead of a prequel, with several actors set to return. The filmmaker also shared that the sequel is in "soft prep" with plans to begin production at the end of March 2025.

Eli Roth’s slasher Thanksgiving introduced the world to masked killer John Carver last year, nearly 20 years after the concept was originally teased with a faux trailer as part of the Grindhouse double feature experience. We won’t have to wait quite as long for more of Roth’s Thanksgiving, with Sony’s TriStar recently announcing that Thanksgiving 2 is coming in 2025.
Eli Roth and Jeff Rendell are back to write the screenplay for the upcoming slasher sequel, and Roth provides a fresh update on Thanksgiving 2 in a new chat with Indiewire.
For starters, the website notes that the sequel is in “soft prep” at the time of their article being published, “with plans to start shooting [Thanksgiving 2] at the end of March [2025].”
Roth teases, “We’re upping the ante but we are not going to do it with more money. That keeps it tight and lean and mean...

Quick Links Thanksgiving 2: Further News & Info Eli Roth's Thanksgiving brings terror to Turkey Day in a brand-new slasher film, and a frightening sequel, Thanksgiving 2, is on the horizon. Expanded from a fake trailer that originally appeared in 2007's Grindhouse, Thanksgiving is a classic revenge slasher in which a crazed ax-wielding murderer stalks the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts in order to get even for a violent Black Friday shopping riot. Made with Roth's signature penchant for gore, Thanksgiving is also a clever social satire about the rise of consumerism and how it ruins the spirit of the holidays.Despite its divisive subject matter and blood-soaked scenes, Thanksgiving has been warmly received by many critics who appreciate the film's subtext that plays out beneath the typical slasher movie mayhem (via Rotten Tomatoes). Sixteen years passed from the time Eli Roth made a slasher faux trailer called Thanksgiving for the Robert Rodriguez / Quentin Tarantino double feature Grindhouse to the day when a feature version of Thanksgiving (read our review Here) finally made its way into theatres – and the fact that we’re being rewarded for our patience with not just that movie, but also a sequel that’s expected to reach theatres sometime in 2025 is truly something to be thankful about. The sequel was announced soon after the first film reached theatres, and during a new interview with IndieWire, Roth revealed that the script for Thanksgiving 2 is complete and filming starts soon!
Roth had been wanting to make a feature version of Thanksgiving ever since he made the faux trailer, and even wrote the screenplay with Jeff Rendell (who played the homicidal pilgrim in the trailer) a dozen years ago. The feature...

Thanksgiving stars Patrick Dempsey as town sheriff Eric Newlon, along with Nell Verlaque, Jalen Thomas Brooks, Addison Rae, Gabriel Davenport, Milo Manheim, Karen Cliche, and Rick Hoffman. Praised by audiences, the film currently holds a score of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a sequel, scheduled to premiere in 2025, was previously confirmed by Roth.

A sequel to Eli Roth's 2023 slasher film Thanksgiving is officially in the works and will reportedly be released in 2025. Given how the first movie ended, we already have a rough idea of who will return, but a few actors have discussed coming back for the sequel, and Roth has teased that Addison Rae might be one of them. Spoilers ahead for Thanksgiving ending.
Since it has only been one year since the movie was first released in theaters, many are bound to rewatch it as the beginning of a holiday tradition. There aren't many Thanksgiving horror movies out there, and this one fully leans into its premise.
At the end of the first movie, Rae's character, Gaby, is one of several to survive John Carver's reign of terror in the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts. She survives alongside several of her friends, including Jessica (Nell Verlaque).

Director Eli Roth returns with this entertaining holiday-themed slasher based on the mock trailer he created for 2007’s Grindhouse. As such, the tagline is so good, it makes it into the movie as a line of dialogue: “This Thanksgiving, there will be…no leftovers.”
Set in Plymouth Massachusetts, the film opens with a horrific Black Friday tragedy, when customers go crazy at a Right-Mart store sale, leaving multiple people trampled to death. One year later, with Thanksgiving approaching again, high school student Jessica (Nell Verlaque) and her friends (who were all in the store on the night of the massacre) start getting tagged into creepy posts on Instagram, by someone calling himself “John Carver”.

I typically love scenarios where one character, or multiple, has a bad day or week. This setup makes the rest of the story exciting since we know things can only look up from there. Notice to Quit is very much this kind of film, as Andy Singers (Michael Zegen) day goes from bad to worse to only slightly better. Writer-director Simon Hacker has a good grasp on his characters and story, but while Notice to Quit has a spark, it lacks any true heartwarming moments, which are buried beneath a surface-level premise that refuses to engage with vulnerability.

In addition, Fox unveiled a short trailer teasing the fictional cases and timely subject matters that will be featured in the new season.
“Accused is a collection of intense, topical, and human stories of crime and punishment. Each episode is a fast-paced provocative thriller, exploring a different crime, in a different city, with an entirely original cast,” reads Fox’s synopsis. “Based on the BBC’s BAFTA-winning crime anthology, each episode opens in a courtroom on the defendant, with viewers knowing nothing about their crime or how they ended up on trial. Told from the defendant’s point of view through flashbacks, the show holds a mirror up to current times with evocative and emotional stories. In the end,...

Director Eli Roth will continue the holiday-focused killing spree storyline in Thanksgiving 2. Gaby's return in Thanksgiving 2 hints at a revenge plot with John Carver targeting survivors. Bringing back more cast members raises the stakes of the sequel.
Thanksgiving 2's big casting news also reveals what killer John Carver's goal will be in the upcoming sequel. A follow-up to Eli Roth's Thanksgiving, a slasher film with dark comedy elements, Thanksgiving 2 will see the return of Addison Rae. In the first film, a small Massachusetts town is terrorized by a killer wearing a John Carver mask. As the killer's tactics become more outlandish, the victims are picked off in ways that mimic some of the holiday's traditions. While Addison Rae's Gaby is one of the killer's victims, Jessica (Nell Verlaque) fills the role of the final girl.

It’s a bad time to be Eli Roth.
A miscalculation of near-mythic proportions, “Borderlands” has a whopping six percent on Rotten Tomatoes heading into its opening weekend. Those bad reviews (IndieWire gave it a “C-“) are the least of the “Hostel” filmmaker’s problems, as Lionsgate’s misguided video game adaptation has inspired assessments of not only the director’s filmography but also whether his impact on pop culture has been at all valuable.
This ranking can’t account for all of that. If you’re a fan of the types of genre films that Roth makes, read on. If you’re not, do not pass go, do not collect $200, and enjoy the “Borderlands” dogpile — a massive multiplayer online affair now available free of charge.

Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving was a fun holiday slasher, and the studio didn’t take long to get the ball rolling on a sequel. While speaking with Variety, Roth said that co-writer Jeff Rendell and himself were about to submit the script for Thanksgiving 2 to the studio and teased that Addison Rae could be returning.
“I love Addison Rae,” Roth said. “We kept her alive for a reason. It doesn’t feel like a ‘Thanksgiving’ movie without Addison Rae.” Rae played Gaby in the film, one of Jessica’s (Nell Verlaque) friends who narrowly escaped death at the hands of the mysterious killer. Variety notes that Rae hasn’t officially been signed to the sequel yet.

It looks like Addison Rae will have (at least) one more face-off with Thanksgiving killer John Carver. Rae starred in Eli Roth's Thanksgiving as Gaby, one of the few characters that survived the gruesome holiday feast. Roth revealed that a sequel to the well-received slasher had been greenlit shortly after the film's premiere last November. Now, in a conversation with Variety (while promoting his upcoming video game adaptation Borderlands), Roth shared that he and co-writer Jeff Rendell were about to turn in the completed sequel's script to the studio. That's when Variety asked Roth about Rae's possible return.

Eli Roth has hinted Addison Rae will appear in 'Thanksgiving 2'. Thanksgiving ends with a twist revealing Sheriff Newlon as the killer and burning him alive, paralleling Halloween II's mistake. Thanksgiving, a 2023 horror film directed by Eli Roth, was inspired by a fictitious trailer from 2007's Grindhouse. Thanksgiving received positive reviews, grossed $46.5 million, and has a sequel scheduled for 2025. Dark Harvest, also from 2023, shares similarities with Thanksgiving but takes a fantasy approach based on a 2006 book.
