Amazon Prime Video’s newest A24-backed show, Overcompensating, was promoted as a coming-of-age comedy drama full of emotional awakenings, cringe-comedy, and campus chaos. But as soon as you press play on the pilot, Benito Skinner, playing an 18-year-old college freshman, does not make sense. While there’s no denying Skinner is a talented comedian with a remarkable social media presence, casting him as a teenager fresh out of high school might’ve been a stretch too big.

John Carver will return to kill again in a sequel to Eli Roth's 2023 slasher movie Thanksgiving. The sequel has been in development for a while now, basically since the first movie released.

Debuting to critical acclaim and a decent box office return, Sony Pictures quickly revealed he would be cooking up a follow-up film and even posted the announcement on his Instagram page in November 2023. In his post, he confirmed that the movie would be released in fall 2025, but that date has started to seem impossible as updates on the sequel remain few and far between.

Verlaque, who played serial killer John Carver's nemesis Jessica in the first film, told Deadline on Monday (May 19) that she was "really excited" to get back on set for Thanksgiving 2. She also confirmed that filming is tentatively scheduled to take place very soon.

At last Wednesday’s premiere of Prime Video‘s Overcompensating, the actress told Deadline that she’s “really excited” to get into production on the sequel to 2023’s Thanksgiving, which she hopes to film after completing production on her upcoming MGM+ series American Classic.

“I think we will be filming this year,” said Verlaque on the red carpet at the Hollywood Palladium. “I actually just saw Eli, and we’re talking about some plot points, so I’m really excited for it.”

Thanksgiving star Nell Verlaque, who will return for the sequel, says in a new chat with Variety that she expects filming to take place on Thanksgiving 2 later this year.

“There is a script. I know that the goal is to film it this year,” Verlaque tells the outlet.

The actress notes, “[Eli Roth’s] a great director. I told him I really wanted to be tortured… like fully pain, tortured [in the sequel]. I would like to get covered in blood. I’ve read certain parts of [the script] and… he’s told me a few of the ideas.

The first film revolved around a serial killer who dresses like a 17th-century pilgrim and terrorizes residents of Plymouth, Mass., during the holiday season.

Benito Skinner's comedy-routine-turned-tv-show, Overcompensating, is a hit with critics and viewers alike. Only four days after debuting on Prime Video, the show is certified fresh at 94% and 83% by viewers. There is a significant gap between critical and audience reception for the college-set comedy, but it's not big enough to tell a conflicting story. The numbers indicate that the show is being enjoyed by most viewers, giving it a great chance at scoring a second-season renewal. It's still early to know how the show is performing, but those numbers should be out soon, and maybe viewers will learn what happened after that massive cliffhanger involving Carmen (Wally Baram) and the revelation of a huge personal secret.

If you make me laugh on my phone, I want you in it, I want friends in it, comedians I’m obsessed with who haven’t gotten their platform to shine, just people I love so much. Director Eli Roth returns with this entertaining holiday-themed slasher based on the mock trailer he created for 2007’s Grindhouse. As such, the tagline is so good, it makes it into the movie as a line of dialogue: “This Thanksgiving, there will be…no leftovers.”

Set in Plymouth Massachusetts, the film opens with a horrific Black Friday tragedy, when customers go crazy at a Right-Mart store sale, leaving multiple people trampled to death. One year later, with Thanksgiving approaching again, high school student Jessica (Nell Verlaque) and her friends (who were all in the store on the night of the massacre) start getting tagged into creepy posts on Instagram, by someone calling himself “John Carver”.

Sure enough, it isn’t long before various Plymouth residents...

I typically love scenarios where one character, or multiple, has a bad day or week. This setup makes the rest of the story exciting since we know things can only look up from there. Notice to Quit is very much this kind of film, as Andy Singers (Michael Zegen) day goes from bad to worse to only slightly better. Writer-director Simon Hacker has a good grasp on his characters and story, but while Notice to Quit has a spark, it lacks any true heartwarming moments, which are buried beneath a surface-level premise that refuses to engage with vulnerability.

A miscalculation of near-mythic proportions, “Borderlands” has a whopping six percent on Rotten Tomatoes heading into its opening weekend. Those bad reviews (IndieWire gave it a “C-“) are the least of the “Hostel” filmmaker’s problems, as Lionsgate’s misguided video game adaptation has inspired assessments of not only the director’s filmography but also whether his impact on pop culture has been at all valuable.

Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving was a fun holiday slasher, and the studio didn’t take long to get the ball rolling on a sequel. While speaking with Variety, Roth said that co-writer Jeff Rendell and himself were about to submit the script for Thanksgiving 2 to the studio and teased that Addison Rae could be returning.

“I love Addison Rae,” Roth said. “We kept her alive for a reason. It doesn’t feel like a ‘Thanksgiving’ movie without Addison Rae.” Rae played Gaby in the film, one of Jessica’s (Nell Verlaque) friends who narrowly escaped death at the hands of the mysterious killer. Shortly after the first turkey day-themed horror movie “Thanksgiving” was released in November, it was announced that a sequel was being developed.

Roth, the director and co-writer of the first and second films, tells me that he and co-writer Jeff Rendell are about to hand in the followup script to the studio.

When I asked if Rae would be returning – her character is one of the few survivors at the end of the first movie – Roth smiled.
