It really helped that I watched this anime with my oldest daughter, as she's pretty fluent in Japanese and lived in the country for a time. Because of that, she was able to explain a few things that came up during the course of the show. And, since she speaks the language, we watched it subtitled instead of dubbed. If you want to see it, it's available now on Hulu (with commercials) and Crunchyroll.
The show is about 15 year-old witch who moves in with some family friends in a small northern Japanese town. She is, as the Japanese sometimes say, 'My Pace'...meaning she's not like most girls and seems to have her head in the clouds at times. But she's also very kind and sweet....and the friends she gains during the course of the show are also very sweet and likable.
The story is unusual and a lot like Azumanga Daioh (also from the same folks) in that the story isn't so much important as the characters. In other words, the adventures and situations are pretty tame and folks who love mecha anime and Kamen Rider-style shows might find it all a bit dull and wimpy. But I loved it....due to the very sweet characters and situations. Additionally, the animation (compared to other anime shows) is exceptional...almost Studio Ghibli quality...with gorgeous backgrounds. Well worth seeing and quite sweet.
