A tragicomedy indeed
17 May 2011
But very mild anyway. Little comedy and much tragedy although superficially treated since the funny side is the more important and is supposed to prevail. A noble young and rich lady of Portuguese rural aristocracy of the end of 19th and beginning of 20th centuries falls in love with a plough-boy but since social rules forbid this relationship, she marries successively three men of her class. These husbands die also successively in circumstances I won't reveal here in order that they might be appreciated by those who wish to see the movie. The story is somewhat simple and even a bit witless but it's told in enough vivid terms and images to keep us amused while the movie lasts. Finally, a movie to be seen for lack of something better
