The fact that this story took place twenty miles down the road from where I live, there is one striking element that quickly got my attention. The accents of the characters do not represent the regions' unique variety of northeastern speech. I realize that this story occurred one hundred and thirty years ago but the accents in the mini series reflect a variety that is more homogenized than it would have been in Fall River Massachusetts in this period. Also, I get the feeling in some of the pub scenes that its the wild west not a yankee/northeastern setting. Where are the fishermen? Where are the Portuguese and french speaking immigrants that started moving into this area to work in textile industry mills? I do think the setting recreation is done well. Costumes are impeccable. Houses in the series seem period and the furnishings are accurate as they can be. The stories are interesting but a bit fanciful. I cannot believe that a psychopathic woman would possess such social power and sway. Her ostracized status would have kept her out of the limelight of Fall River society. the series is a good entertainment value.
