Most Trekkies know that Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) kept a pet lionfish in a globe-shaped aquarium in his ready room. Only deep-cut Trekkies know, however, that the fish was named Livingston. Some have assumed it was named after Harold Livingston, the screenwriter of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," but the fish could also have been named after the Scottish football team, for all we know. No information has been given about Livingston the lionfish.
Indeed, no one knows if the fish was Picard's personal pet, or if lionfish were merely standard-issue in-office animals in Starfleet. It seems likely it was the former, as the latter seems too exploitative for the life-respecting Federation; no 24th-century bureaucracy would wrangle thousands of fish merely to install them as background critters in captains' ready-rooms.

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Power Play", the crew of the Enterprise-d find themselves visiting the surface of a seemingly uninhabited moon from whence a distress call was emanating. Data (Brent Spiner), Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes), and Counselor Troi (Marina Sirtis) are able to fly down in a shuttle, but violent energy storms prevent them from taking off again. They can only beam up once Chief O'Brien (Colm Meany) visits the surface and enhances their transporter pattern.
Just as they are prepping to return, however, they are all knocked unconscious by a bolt of energy, getting thrown to the ground. Data, Troi, and O'Brien are then eerily possessed by free-floating balls of energy that drift into their bodies from a cloud above. It isn't until later that those watching at home learn that the heroes have been taken over by the dead crew of a crashed ship,...

There aren’t enough Native women on TV. But when they do get hired, they’re often playing cops.
“Not to take away from the performances of all these actresses, who I admire so much and are doing a beautiful job,” says Lily Gladstone, “but it’s almost the only role that we get to see.”
So it’s understandable that Gladstone had something of a checklist in hand when she first met with the producers of “Under the Bridge.” They were offering her the role of Cam Bentland, a police officer investigating the 1997 murder of Reena Virk (played by Vritika Gupta), a 14-year-old child of Indian immigrants in Saanich Core, British Columbia.
Cam, a Native woman adopted by a family of white cops, was the invention of series creator Quinn Shephard. Though realistic, the character is fictional; but the homicide at the center of the project is not. Often in the true crime genre,...

Lily Gladstone has been putting her feet up.
You’d be forgiven for assuming that Gladstone — the first Native American actress to have been nominated for an Academy Award — has a lot on her plate. And she has, but at home in Seattle, post-Oscars, she’s spent some well-earned time on the sofa, specifically watching The Bear Season 2. She’s not likely to be hanging around watching Carmy in his Chicago kitchen for too long, though.
After her staggering, soulful performance as Mollie Burkhart, the beleaguered woman at the centre of a vast murder plot in Martin Scorsese’s epic drama Killers Of The Flower Moon — and the Oscar nomination to go with...

Now that awards season has come to an end and the dust has settled, it’s time to reflect on the past 10 or so months. There can only be a select group of actors who walk away with an Academy Award each year. For those who may be disappointed that Lily Gladstone failed to take home the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” fear not. While she may not have won the biggest prize, she still wound up winning awards season.
Gladstone, who has shared the fact they are nonbinary and uses both she/they pronouns, has clearly had a massive breakout year. Let us count the ways here:

The awards season created a unique bond among Best Actress nominees Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone, but Stone’s win over Gladstone did not sit well with many fans. Stone won her second Oscar for her role as Bella Baxter in Poor Things. Lily Gladstone, who played the Osage woman, Molly Burkhart, in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon was expected by many to win the Oscar.

Lily Gladstone has already made history. When the Piegan Blackfeet and Nez Perce actor received an Oscar nomination for their searing performance in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” on January 23, she became the first Native American actor to receive a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars, and the second Native American performer to receive an Oscar nomination overall, after Chief Dan George’s Supporting Actor Nomination for 1970’s “Little Big Man.”
Should Gladstone win the award, it would make them the first Native American performer to ever win an acting Oscar — an incredible achievement, albeit not one that erases the Oscars’ troubled history with Indigenous people. But regardless of what happens, Gladstone’s incredible work in the film as Mollie Burkhart, a real life Osage woman in the 1920s whose husband Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio) was a conspirator in a series of mass murders of her people — stands...

Lily Gladstone, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is a trailblazing Native American actress whose breakout performance in Martin Scorsese’s film Killers of the Flower Moon, as an Osage woman named Mollie Burkhart whose oil wealth made her a target of white men during what is known as the “Reign of Terror,” has made her a bona-fide star. Indeed, she has already won the best actress in a motion picture drama Golden Globe Award and the best actress National Board of Review, New York Film Critics Circle and SAG awards; she was nominated for the best actress Critics Choice Award; and she is nominated, in a first for an Indigenous American, for the best actress Academy Award.

Some people say, 'I want to see it again.'"Not every film is for every person. As the 96th annual Academy Award nominations were revealed on Tuesday morning, Martin Scorsese was in New York, the city that shaped his gutsy and gritty style of filmmaking. His latest epic, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” picked up 10 Oscar nominations, although lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio was snubbed. With his director nod, Scorsese has been recognized 10 times in the category, making him the most nominated living filmmaker, edging out Steven Spielberg. But as he achieved that feat, his thoughts returned to old friends from “the neighborhood,” those rough-and-tumble streets of Little Italy where he came of age.
“The ones I knew are mostly gone, along with the neighborhood itself,” Scorsese says. “But they’re always with me, wherever I go. Maybe they’re joking around with me and giving me a hard time, but they’re proud.”

Hot on the heels of her historic Oscar nomination, Killers of the Flower Moon breakout Lily Gladstone has found her next starring role, one that reteams her with filmmaker Martin Scorsese.
Gladstone is attached to star in The Memory Police, a hot package that is coming together. It will adapt of the acclaimed 1994 science fiction novel by Yoko Ogawa. Reed Morano, who helmed episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale as well as indie I Think We’re Alone Now, is on board to direct the feature whose story has tones of Franz Kafka and George Orwell, and fittingly comes armed with a script by Charlie Kaufman, the writer of such mind-tripping movies as Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Native American characters have been depicted in the movies since the dawn of Hollywood, but in 2024 an actual Native American actor has finally been nominated for an Academy Award.

Lily Gladstone has made Oscar history.
On Tuesday morning Gladstone was nominated in the Lead Actress category, making her the first ever Native woman of American descent to be nominated in this category.
If she wins, she will be the first indigenous actress to do so in this category.
In Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Gladstone portrays Mollie Burkhart, an oil-rich Osage woman married to Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio), the nephew of an influential rancher. When her Osage Nation family and friends are systematically murdered, and her own health fails dramatically, a murder investigation ensues, led by the then-nascent FBI.

Silence greets Ernest Burkhart when he enters a meeting with the business leaders of Osage County, Oklahoma. This late into Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio) has proven to be easily pliable, to the point that his uncle William “King” Hale (Robert De Niro) can convince him to poison his beloved wife Mollie (Lily Gladstone). But he can be pushed only so far. If the leaders do not want Ernest to testify against his uncle, they must be subtle.
Thus the quiet when Ernest enters the room, which Scorsese and his cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto shoot like a baroque painting. The low mumble of their conversation fades as each withered white face turns from the shadows to face Ernest, who nods in a suggestion of understanding.
But the quiet breaks when W.S. Hamilton, the lawyer for Hale and Ernest,...

Lily Gladstone has responded to Devery Jacobs‘ criticisms of Killers of the Flower Moon.
Jacobs previously tweeted that watching the Martin Scorsese drama brought forth deep emotions based on its “unrelenting and unnecessarily graphic” portrayals of the 1920s murders of Osage people.
The film follows the real-life killings of the Osage after oil was found on their land in Oklahoma.
Gladstone won the Golden Globe for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, an Osage Nation woman whose family was murdered by her in-laws for oil inheritances.
Gladstone told Rolling Stone in a new interview that Jacobs’ “reaction is a response to a lot of trauma” that Native women endure.
“I don’t want to bring heat back on her for this because I think that’s unfair. Her reaction is hers,” Gladstone said of Jacobs. “We’re friends. I crashed on her couch in Toronto when Certain Women played at TIFF.

Lily Gladstone is defending her Reservation Dogs co-star Devery Jacobs’ right to her opinion about Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese’s take on the Osage murders.
The Golden Globe winner briefly addressed the Echo star’s comments about the film, in which Jacobs described the experience of watching it as “hellfire.” The film chronicles the “reign of terror,” a string of unsolved murders by white Americans as part of a plot to steal the wealth of the Osage tribe, which retained the mineral rights, including oil leases, on their reservation.
This was carried out in part by white men marrying women of the tribe and becoming guardians of their Osage partner’s estate. In the film, Gladstone plays Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman who is targeted alongside her family by her husband, Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio), for their oil headrights on their Oklahoma reservation.

Lily Gladstone is speaking out after her “Reservation Dogs” co-star Devery Jacobs’ criticisms of “Killers of the Flower Moon” went viral.
Jacobs tweeted that watching the Martin Scorsese true crime drama was “fucking hellfire” due to the “unrelenting and unnecessarily graphic” portrayals of the 1920s murders of Osage people. The film follows the real-life killings of indigenous Osage after oil was found under their land in Oklahoma. Gladstone won the Golden Globe for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, an Osage Nation woman whose family was murdered by her in-laws for oil inheritances. Gladstone is predicted to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
Gladstone told Rolling Stone in a new interview that Jacobs’ “reaction is a response to a lot of trauma” that Native women endure, especially when reliving the ancestral murders.

Lily Gladstone is calling out Oklahoma public schools ahead of the “Killers of the Flower Moon” premiere.
The Martin Scorsese film, which is based on David Grann’s nonfiction book chronicling a series of Osage Nation murders in Oklahoma during the 1920s after the discovery of oil on their land, stars Gladstone as a member of the Osage people whose family is murdered. During an Interview magazine conversation with “Certain Women” director Kelly Reichardt, Gladstone compared teaching the film to the denial of reparations for the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre following multiple state lawsuits. “Killers of the Flower Moon” also takes place in the 1920s post the terrorist attack.
“Everything that these Oklahomans are doing is — to say that the objection to teaching about the Tulsa massacre at Greenwood wasn’t race-driven is just — every teacher in the state’s too afraid to teach ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,'” Gladstone said.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lily Gladstone recently joined Rolling Stone for an interview in which she was asked to weigh in on the heated criticism of the film made by “Reservation Dogs” actor Devery Jacobs, who Gladstone said is a friend. Gladstone also appeared on “Reservation Dogs.” Jacobs is a fellow Indigenous actor best known for playing Elora on three seasons of the FX and Hulu comedy series. She called out “Flower Moon” last October for not portraying its Osage characters with “honor or dignity” and for further dehumanizing them by depicting their deaths.
“We’re friends. I crashed on her couch in Toronto when ‘Certain Women’ played at TIFF,” Gladstone said when asked about Jacobs’ criticisms, with Rolling Stone noting the actor’s “face drops” when the topic is brought up. “I don’t want to bring heat back on her for this because I think that’s unfair.

When Lily Gladstone was growing up on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in rural Montana, acting in plays was an escape from bullies, who targeted her for being “verbose and goofy.” The idea came from her father, a Native man of Piegan Blackfeet and Nez Perce heritage, whom she describes as “a bit of a wizard” and “had me convinced when I was younger that he was able to move clouds.”
“My dad saw early on when I was onstage that I just thrived,” Gladstone says. “When I was nine, it was the worst of it.

Kristen Stewart is jabbing her finger into the couch we’re sharing, speaking with increasing speed and ferocity about what has driven her to this brink. She’s spent five years fruitlessly trying to drum up financing for what she hopes will be her feature directing debut, “The Chronology of Water,” based on the stream-of-consciousness memoir by bisexual author Lidia Yuknavitch. She’s so hacked off about it that she’s about to ruin the furniture.
“I won’t make a-fucking-nother movie until I make this movie,” she declares. Then she sits back and breaks into nervous laughter. “Can’t wait for my agents to read that.”

“It goes without saying: congratulations on your work.” So said Film Independent President, at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Award nominee brunch on January 6. Held for the second consecutive year at Santa Monica’s beachfront Casa Del Mar hotel, the purpose of the annual gathering was twofold: to celebrate our current cohort of Spirit Award nominees, and to hand out the three Emerging Filmmaker Awards, each carrying with it a $25,000 unrestricted cash grant for its recipient. Welsh added, “The excellence you’ve brought this year has enlivened and inspired us at a critical time.”
The awards portion of the Saturday gathering–grand ballroom windows giving way to a spectacular beach view–was hosted by two of Hollywood’s buzziest performers and past Spirit Award nominees, Colman Domingo and Lily Gladstone. “It really feels incredible to be here and see all of you,” said Domingo, enthusiastically.

It’s been exceedingly rare for Indigenous actors to play lead roles in Hollywood, even more so for prestige, awards-contending projects. As such, it should be of little surprise that Lily Gladstone’s 2024 Golden Globe win makes her the first Indigenous actor to win an award in the ceremony’s 81-year history.
In taking home best actress in a motion picture, drama for their role in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Gladstone (Blackfeet/Nimíipuu) makes history as the only Indigenous person to take home a Golden Globe. Irene Bedard is the only other actor to previously receive a nomination — for best actress in a miniseries or TV movie for 1994’s Lakota Woman: Siege at Wounded Knee — while director Taika Waititi was recognized for Jojo Rabbit’s best musical/comedy film nomination in 2020 and Reservation Dogs was nominated for best musical/comedy series in 2022.

Lily Gladstone made history at the Golden Globes by becoming the first Indigenous woman in the show’s 81-year history to win the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama award for her transformative performance in Martin Scorsese drama Killers of the Flower Moon. The category was one of the most anticipated of the night and featured several powerhouse performances from the past year.
The film is based on the 2017 nonfiction book The Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann. The film depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation in Oklahoma during the 1920s, after they made massive discoveries of oil on their land. Gladstone, an actress known for indie films like Certain Women and Billions, plays the role of Mollie Burkhart. Mollie is an Osage woman who marries Ernest Burkhart, the nephew of a powerful local rancher.

Casting director Ellen Lewis and head of Indigenous casting Rene Haynes came to Killers of the Flower Moon from very different backgrounds. The former had worked with Martin Scorsese for many years, beginning with Goodfellas. The latter had been at the forefront of casting Indigenous actors in everything from the Twilight series to the HBO film Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, which earned her an Emmy nom. When Killers came around, says Lewis, “I contacted Rene immediately because I had met her on [the Netflix series] Godless and knew that I was going to want her with me on this journey.”
Haynes was first hired to cast extras for War Party (1988). Production brought her to the Seven Reservations of Montana, where she says she “developed this strong attachment to [the Indigenous] community.” Soon thereafter was Dances With Wolves (1990), which she says “heralded a realization that Native characters should be played by Native actors.

Lily Gladstone is the crown jewel of awards season so far, on her way to a likely Best Actress Oscar nomination for her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Just last week, Gladstone earned the prestigious New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress, among many other honors already happening.
But at IndieWire Honors on December 6 in Los Angeles, Lily Gladstone added the Performance Award to those accolades for her searing turn in Martin Scorsese’s crime drama. The Montana-born actress — who is of Piegan Blackfeet, Nez Perce, and European heritage — plays the real-life Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman who played a pivotal but tragic role in exposing the systematic murder of wealthy Osage by white opportunists in 1920s Oklahoma.
Yet instead of only touting her acclaimed role in the Apple Original Films feature — her studio debut — she took to the IndieWire Honors stage to champion her indie film “Fancy Dance,...

In a new video posted to social media by Apple Original Films, “Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lily Gladstone said that working on the Martin Scorsese picture “completely changed me as a human being.”
The footage was captured during Gladstone’s last day on the film’s Oklahoma set. Standing alongside costar Leonardo DiCaprio, the Best Actress hopeful addressed the crew and other actors and compared the project to her earliest creative endeavors.
“Not since I was a teenager, renting out basement spaces in art galleries just making shit with my friends for the sake of doing it have I felt such equal and open and loving collaboration and craftsmanship,” Gladstone said. “Which is something pretty remarkable at this level – because this is a first for me.”

Leonardo DiCaprio introduced Lily Gladstone at Variety Power of Women Presented by Lifetime, reflecting on their time shared as co-stars while filming “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and praising Gladstone’s acting abilities.
DiCaprio cited several of Gladstone’s critically acclaimed performances in films such as “Fancy Dance” and “Certain Women,” but then revealed that she was “on the verge of quitting acting altogether” when they first met.
“That an actor of such profound talent has found it a long and hard road to get this recognition speaks to the unfairness that still exists in our industry today,” DiCaprio said in his speech. “I fervently hope that we’re entering a new era in which actors like Lily, who embody this authenticity and undeniable truth in their own storytelling, take center stage. There’s a story Lily Gladstone likes to tell about a Blackfeet man and a flower.
“He pulled it from the ground and shook the dirt off. He exposed the root system,” she says. “And he said, ‘This is like a story. If this flower is a story, then all of these roots are the different versions. They twist around each other; they go off in opposite directions. But that’s what gives it its strength. That’s what makes it hard to uproot. That’s what keeps the story going.”
The man was speaking to 20th-century historian James Willard Schultz, who was struggling to make sense of the varying ways Blackfeet people had told him the same stories. In an oral tradition, Gladstone emphasizes, there’s no one way of seeing things; each person’s narrative is the truth.

If you tuned into "Special Ops: Lioness" this summer, after watching the rest of screenwriter Taylor Sheridan's ever-growing catalog, you may have come away each week surprised to see the character Two Cups still kicking. That's because the actor who plays the CIA special agent in the Paramount+ thriller is James Jordan, who's become notorious for dying in Sheridan's projects. In fact, when asked about Jordan's recurring deaths in an interview with Deadline last year, Sheridan called the actor "my pinch-hitter, when I need to kill somebody."
Jordan's characters have died memorably in three Sheridan projects and counting, beginning all the way back with the 2017 film "Wind River." The film is a bleak look at the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women through the lens of two white investigators trying to solve a murder, and Jordan plays the despicable party responsible. Around the halfway mark of Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Ernest Burkhurt and his uncle, William Hale, drive around the town of Fairfax, which looks exceptionally lit on a seemingly normal evening. Yellow string lights are hanging outside every single Osage house, implying that it is the time of festivities. Unfortunately, though, it is rather the opposite. A series of horrific deaths have severely impacted the community. The lights are, in fact, a desperate attempt by the Osage people to keep evil at bay. Of course, the audience is aware that Ernest and Hale are the “evils” here. Technically, it is all Hale, as Ernest is basically a spineless puppet who does his uncle’s bidding. The roles of the uncle and nephew are played by two of the most widely popular actors you could possibly imagine: Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. But they are not...

Lily Gladstone spent the opening day of her mega-budget epic, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” standing in the rain in Times Square picketing alongside her fellow actors.
The thespian, who has been getting Oscar buzz for her co-starring role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Jesse Plemons and Robert De Niro, marched Friday with sign-in-hand amid the rain in New York City.
She shared the brief videos on her Instagram story feed, seemingly sans audio, which shows three moments during which the actress is clearly unphased by the weather. It’s an ironic way to spend what otherwise might have been a glamorous day of in-person interviews, zoom chats, fashion shoots and (to the extent the “Certain Women” actress cares) waiting to hear the first guestimates for opening day box office.

This post contains spoilers for "Killers of the Flower Moon."
Robert De Niro or Leonardo DiCaprio starring in a film directed by Martin Scorsese is so commonplace it could be its own category of movie trivia, which only makes the casting of Lily Gladstone in "Killers of the Flower Moon" all the more exciting. As reported by Variety, Gladstone (she/they) will be campaigning for Best Actress, not Best Supporting Actress the way many critics and analysts had predicted. Since her breakout role in Kelly Reichardt's "Certain Women" in 2016, Gladstone has been classified as "one to watch," but nabbing a leading role in a Martin Scorsese film has skyrocketed them into public consciousness.

In the 1920s, the people of the Osage Nation became the richest people on earth after oil was discovered under their supposedly worthless land. The money drew ambitious white men and not long after, Osage began to die in a series of suspicious deaths, some of which were clearly murder. Based on journalist David Grann’s bestselling non-fiction book “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI,” Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon turns that non-fiction book into drama that combines elements of romance, mystery, and the history of the 1920s Osage murders, in an epic Western thriller starring Leo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone.

Filmmaker Martin Scorsese returns to theaters just in time to take on Taylor Swift in the second weekend of her record-setting “The Eras Tour” concert movie. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” is Scorsese’s first movie since “The Irishman” in 2019, which ultimately ended up on Netflix. Adapted from David Grann‘s 2017 true-crime novel, it’s about a group of unscrupulous white men in the 1920s trying to rob the Osage Nation of Oklahoma out of their oil money.
“Killers” reunites Scorsese with two of the actors with whom he’s collaborated the most, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, though this is only the second time they star in one of his movies together.

Todd Haynes tells me that May December, his gripping melodrama starring Oscar winners Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, “aggressively disturbs our moral moorings.”
It’s true, and as I watched the movie — about a TV star (Portman) who arrives in Savannah, Georgia, to shadow the woman (Moore) at the center of a 20-year-old scandal — for a second time recently in Los Angeles, an image of Donald Trump popped uncomfortably into my head.
Moore plays Gracie, who had an intimate affair with a 13-year-old schoolboy two decades previously, when she was married with a family.
The added detail that they canoodled in a pet store made it perfect fodder to splash on tabloid front pages.
That Gracie went to jail and had the boy-teen’s child while incarcerated ensured coverage continued for weeks.
Two decades later, Gracie and Joe, the kid, now in his 30s, are married with three kids of their own,...

Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) recently threw a wrench into our Oscar predictions. We’d expected her to compete for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Martin Scorsese‘s film, but then it was announced that she would be campaigned for Best Actress instead. Will the upgrade pay off? So far it looks promising.
As soon as Gladstone entered our Best Actress predictions on September 20 she started rapidly rising. By September 22 she was already in the top five based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. By September 26 she was in the top four. On October 2 she leapfrogged both Sandra Huller (“Anatomy of a Fall”) and Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”) to take second place. Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) remains the front-runner as of this writing, and she has opened up a pretty big lead since her film started making the rounds on the fall festival circuit,...

Any time Martin Scorsese makes a film, it’s a big event, and his crime drama, “Killer Of The Flower Moon,” has been at the top of our Most Anticipated Films of The Year list two years in a row (there was hope that it might arrive in 2022). Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone (“Certain Women”), it’s about a series of murders that took place in Omaha’s Osage Nation in the 1920s; essentially, the Osage Native Indians were getting rich off the oil they were legally entitled to, and this made a lot of racist white people incredibly unhappy, to say the least.
