Fresh Off ‘Road House,’ Amazon MGM Studios Signs First-Look Deal With Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories

Under the pact, Amazon MGM Studios will have first dibs on narrative features that the actor’s production company makes. The deal includes theatrical, as well as streaming releases.

The film debuted on March 21 and has reached over 50 million worldwide viewers on the service. Prior to that, Gyllenhaal starred in “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant,” which the studio released theatrically last year.
Gyllenhaal founded Nine Stories in 2015 with Riva Marker. Most recently, Nine Stories produced Antoine Fuqua’s “The Guilty,” which starred Gyllenhaal and debuted on Netflix. It also produced “Wildlife,” which marked Paul Dano’s directorial debut and starred Carey Mulligan; David Gordon Green’s “Stronger,...

Well, that’s what everyone used to think, that the actor is a major name in the film industry, who would attract huge numbers at the box office. However, that is not the case anymore because Marky Mark’s latest film shows how he is becoming an irrelevant name in the film industry. Mark Wahlberg hasn't had a movie in theaters in a couple of years, but he's about to stage a comeback with "Arthur the King." Hailing from Lionsgate, the true story-inspired movie centers on adventure racer Michael Light and a street dog that he befriends during a crucial moment in his life. So, can this man and his dog tale help bring Wahlberg some glory at the box office? Even though that success may be relatively understated, it's looking very much like that could be the case.
The audience-friendly flick hits theaters next weekend, where it will be opening against "The American Society of Magical Negroes" (which figures to have a muted debut). Kristen Stewart's "Love Lies Bleeding" is also expanding into more theaters, although it also figures to have a somewhat limited footprint. This is to say, "Arthur the King" will probably do the best of the weekend's newcomers,...

If you've been catching up on end-of-year releases in theaters, chances are you've caught the trailer for "Bob Marley: One Love," the upcoming biopic from director Reinaldo Marcus Green. Kingsley Ben-Adir stars as Marley, the first actor to ever play the Jamaican musical legend, activism hero, and Rastafari icon in a feature film. Back in April, /Film's Ben Pearson attended CinemaCon in Las Vegas where he was given an exclusive first look at the film, which was produced by Marley's children and surviving family members, including his wife Rita Marley. As such, it was vital to the family that they had a say in who would play the titular figure.
Ahead of the film's release, Rotten Tomatoes released a featurette where Ziggy Marley discussed why Ben-Adir was the perfect actor for the role. "Kingsley does a great job in an artful way, not trying to mimic my father," he said.

Eva Maria Daniels, the Icelandic producer who most recently executive-produced the Sydney Sweeney project “Reality,” has died. She was 43.
Daniels’ friend, filmmaker Börkur Sigthorsson, posted on Facebook that she “passed away last week in London after a long battle with cancer.” She was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic but by 2021 was opening up about her experience and noting that she was now cancer-free and happy to spend more time with her young child.
“Eva died on the same terms as she lived. She played her cards close to her chest. She didn’t seek recognition when she had success. She didn’t seek pity when she suffered. I will miss her friendship greatly, but mostly I will miss seeing what she would have done next,” Sigthorsson wrote on Facebook.

When author Lee Child created Jack Reacher, he didn't make things too complicated for himself. The ex-military policeman is known for not talking much, traveling from town to town, and being really big. Oh, and he's really good at fighting. And it turns out that's all you really need to create a massively popular character. The Jack Reacher novels are big enough to have spawned two Tom Cruise-led movies and a record-setting Amazon Prime Video series.
In the streaming sphere, "Reacher" has thus far proven as popular as the books, with fans finally getting a version of their beloved bruiser that looks like the guy from the novels. That was important to Child, who made clear early on that the 5-foot 7-inch Tom Cruise would not be returning as Jack Reacher, mainly because he's too small. And after a protracted audition process, the 6-foot 2-inch Alan Ritchson was brought...

From Dirk Diggler to a deacon, Mark Wahlberg has played it all.
The “Boogie Nights” star most recently transformed into a Catholic priest for the new film “Father Stu,” out April 13. Wahlberg also produced the film based on the true story of a boxer turned priest.
“The Fighter” star told Entertainment Tonight that “Father Stu” is a turning point in his career.
“I feel like this is starting a new chapter for me in that, now, doing things like this [with] real substance can help people,” Wahlberg said. “I definitely want to focus on making more. I wouldn’t say necessarily just faith-based content but things that will help people.”
He added, “Hopefully this movie will open a door for not only myself but for lots of other people in Hollywood to make more meaningful content.”
Wahlberg has called “Father Stu” a “dream role” that chose him to do “God’s good” work.

The fairy tale version of the story behind “King Richard” goes like this: Jada Pinkett Smith was on the U.S. Dramatic Competition jury for the 2018 Sundance Film Festival when she saw director Reinaldo Marcus Green’s first feature, “Monsters and Men.” The tough but ultimately rousing look at police brutality and communal activism left her impressed enough to bring the movie to the attention of her husband, Aka Will Smith. The actor, in turn, was on the hunt for the right director to take on “King Richard,” the story of Venus and Serena Williams’ devoted father, with Smith’s Westbrook Inc. attached to produce. Green seemed like the perfect fit.
Cut to three years later, and bingo — “King Richard” launched with a bang at the Telluride Film Festival, where the Warner Bros. production became an instant Oscar contender, with Smith’s empathetic performance as a flawed but passionate patriarch hailed as his best yet.

Jake Gyllenhaal opened up to Howard Stern (via The Independent) this week on the difficulties of acting in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, describing it as “a whole different craft.” Gyllenhaal starred as Quentin Beck/Mysterio opposite Tom Holland in the 2019 summer tentpole “Spider Man: Far From Home.” The MCU entry grossed over $1 billion worldwide. Gyllenhaal said the script was always flexible while making the movie, with lines being substituted for better ones at any given moment.
“It’s hard, man. That acting is hard. All of it,” Gyllenhaal said. “That world is enormous. And I joined that world way into that run; a train that was already moving. Normally, I come in way early on and I get to figure it out.”
Acting in the MCU was such a dramatic change of pace for Gyllenhaal that it resulted in bouts of anxiety on set. Or as Gyllenhaal put it, “I was freaking out.

Last week, three studios made major announcements that suggest Premium VOD income isn’t enough to prioritize it over other platforms; this week, the VOD charts suggests a drop in the momentum toward home viewing options. This may be temporary, with “Candyman” (Universal/$19.99) scheduled for release September 16, but Disney will present the rest of its 2021 movie slate as initial theatrical exclusives. Universal placed “Halloween Kills” day-and-date on Peacock October 15, and Paramount announced that it would replace chairman and and CEO Jim Gianopulos with the more Paramount+-friendly Brian Robbins, currently head of Nickelodeon.
Warner Bros. provides same-day HBO Max access for its theatrical releases, but James Wan’s “Malignant,” a $40 million-budgeted horror film, mustered only 735,000 viewings (per Samba TV’s estimate). Clint Eastwood’s “Cry Macho” this weekend and next month’s “Dune” should do much better. Disney’s “Free Guy,” just announced for September 28 PVOD, should also find high interest.

However Disney ends up dividing the bounty from Marvel’s “Black Widow,” it is now adding to the haul with added revenue sources. After a month of exclusive Premium VOD availability through Disney+, all other platforms, like Roku and Amazon, are offering the year’s highest grossing film in theaters for the same $29.99, but without needing to subscribe to the streamer.
The vagaries of talent contracts, and how their payouts are related to reaching profit (a likely far-off point for the multi-hundred million dollar effort), remain unclear. But what is known is that along with its strong theatrical response, the money it is earning is increasing.
“Black Widow” is #1 on iTunes (usually quickest to respond to new releases) and currently #3 at Google Play. Both these rank by the number of transactions, not the revenue accrued. It is also #1 at Vudu, which charts by how much money was paid to view.

Sony Picture Classics and Neon fared well in their small releases this week with Nine Days and Ailey respectively, running across 6 total locations in New York, Los Angeles and Irvine – both notching heavy per screen averages with the former leading to its wider release next week.
Nine Days hit NYC and LA this weekend before rolling out its planned nationwide release on August 6 in 250-275 theaters, said Jason Michael Berman, producer and president of Mandalay Pictures — depending on how it does. Judging from these numbers, the pic should perform decently.
The science-fiction drama starring Winston Duke grossed $18,455 across 4 theaters, which comes out to a very nifty $4,613 average per location – a strong indicator for public interest in this arthouse title.
The film portrays Will (Duke) who spends his days in a remote Midwestern-looking outpost watching a wall of TV screens of people living their daily lives.

Will Smith often delivers some of his best acting work when tackling true stories, be it in Michael Mann’s “Ali” or Gabriele Muccino’s “The Pursuit of Happyness.” Both of these films earned Smith Oscar nominations for Best Actor. The next true-story drama for the actor is Warner Bros.’ biographical sports drama “King Richard,” in which Smith plays the father of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams. The film takes an intimate look at how Richard trained his young daughters to be world class athletes. “King Richard” marks the studio filmmaking debut of Reinaldo Marcus Green, an indie favorite after directorial efforts such as “Monsters and Men” and “Joe Bell.”
The official “King Richard” synopsis from Warner Bros. reads: “Based on the true story that will inspire the world, ‘King Richard’ follows the journey of Richard Williams, an undeterred father instrumental in raising two of the most extraordinarily gifted athletes of all time,...

M. Night Shyamalan’s self-financed “Old” is the director’s seventh film to open at #1. It made $16.5 million, about 40 percent of the openings earned by his last two films “Glass” and “Split.”
That 40 percent also reflects this weekend’s overall performance (about $66 million) compared to 2019 ($163 million). That reduces the rolling four-weekend comparison to 52 percent, down from 58 percent last week.
“Old,” made for a thrifty $18 million (before marketing costs), will likely be a financial winner for the director. Unlike other Universal genre titles, this one will not have an early PVOD release. Since the public probably isn’t aware of that decision, it’s possible that the presumption of early home viewing contributed to what is Shyamalan’s lowest-grossing opener. Increased Covid anxieties may also be a factor.
The other wide debut, “Snake Eyes,” opened to $13.25 million. It’s an origin film starring Henry Golding from Paramount’s “G.I. Joe” franchise...

In a twist fitting for an M. Night Shyamalan thriller, “Old” is the No. 1 movie at the domestic box office with $16.5 million in ticket sales.
Heading into the weekend, reigning champ “Space Jam: A New Legacy” and fellow newcomer “Snake Eyes” were projected to lead North American charts. Instead, “Space Jam 2” had a huge decline from its opening weekend and “Snake Eyes” fell slightly short of expectations, leaving “Old” to slither to a surprising first place finish.
It may not be the kind of pull-the-rug-out-from-under-you, leave-your-jaw-on-the-floor style finale favored by “The Sixth Sense” filmmaker, but it does demonstrate how wild and unpredictable the box office can be as it tries to recapture momentum during the pandemic and grapples with new hybrid distribution strategies. Stability won’t return anytime soon. New variants of Covid-19 have been driving a spike in infections, recently forcing Los Angeles, the country’s top moviegoing market,...

The opening credits of "Joe Bell" point out that the film is based on a true story, but it might be best to go into it not knowing too much about that story.
That's not because the film from director Reinaldo Marcus Green ("Monsters and Men") in any way betrays the real events, or even distorts them too much -- on the whole, the drama written by Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry tries hard to do justice to Joe Bell, an Oregon man who in 2013 set out to walk across the United States to bring attention to bullying after his son, Jadin, was mercilessly mocked and bullied for being gay.
But "Joe Bell," which premiered at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival under the title "Good Joe Bell" but received a new edit before its July 2021 release from Roadside Attractions, takes some twists and turns along the way -- and it...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on July 22th, 2021, reviewing the new film “Joe Bell” – featuring Mark Wahlberg – in theaters beginning July 23rd.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The film is based on an infamous true story, as Joe Bell was a man who walked across the country, stopping along the way at various high schools and venues to talk about bullying. Bell took on this conviction because his sensitive and gay son Jadin (Reid Miller) was constantly harassed at his school … amazingly, this went down in 2013. The struggles of working class Joe Bell in accepting his son is the hidden struggles that a lot of families Still go through.

Two new movies — “Snake Eyes” starring Henry Golding and M. Night Shyamalan’s “Old” — will open nationwide this weekend, but neither are expected to take down reigning champ “Space Jam: A New Legacy” on domestic box office charts.
After its $31 million start, the sequel to 1996’s sports comedy “Space Jam,” the latest version led by LeBron James, Bugs Bunny and a smattering of Looney Tunes characters, is heading for a repeat victory in North America. The Warner Bros. film is expected to fall 45-50% compared to its debut, which would put ticket sales at $15 million to $18 million for the weekend. Unless “Snake Eyes” or “Old” has a better-than-expected turnout, that haul should be enough to reclaim the top spot. However, it will be a close race.
As for the competition, Paramount’s “Snake Eyes” and Universal’s “Old” are eyeing openings in the low- to mid-teens. All three films are targeting younger male audiences,...

Production on Season 2 of the Netflix hit “Bridgerton” has been shut down after a second Covid case among the team, according to news reports.
The news was first reported by Hello Magazine.
Representatives for Netflix and show producer Shondaland confirmed the shutdown on Saturday but declined to provide any further comment or details. It is reportedly unclear at this time whether the person who has contracted the virus is a member of the cast or the crew but the individual is in isolation.
Production on the series from Shondaland had resumed production on Friday following a crew member testing positive for Covid-19 earlier in the week. The show is primarily shot in Bath, England.
The Hello Magazine story quotes an unnamed source saying that the “Bridgerton” shutdown has Netflix executives concerned about filming of another Netflix hit “The Crown,” also currently filming. “The Crown” shoots primarily at Elstree Studios outside of London,...

Mark Wahlberg chowed down 11,000 calories a day for two straight weeks to transform from a boxer to a priest in the true story of Father Stuart Long in “Stu,” the actor revealed on “The Tonight Show.” And for the two weeks before that, he had 7,000 calories a day — a task that the actor said “was fun for about an hour.”
“It’s such a hard, physical thing to do,” Wahlberg said about his weight gain. “Losing weight, you just kind of tough it out, you just don’t eat, and exercise. And this, even when you’re full, I would wake up after a meal and have another meal. I was eating every three hours. It was not fun.”
The faith-based drama documents the journey Father Stuart Long (affectionately known as Father Stu), who was a college football player turned boxer and Montana Golden Gloves champion to actor to museum manager to priest.

Mark Wahlberg revealed on “The Tonight Show” this week that his transformation diet for the new faith-based drama “Stu” resulted in eating 11,000 calories a day for two weeks, up from the 7,000 calories he was consuming each day for two previous weeks. “Stu” marks the feature directorial debut of Rosalind Ross, who also penned the script. The film is based on the true story of Rev. Stuart Long, who was a boxer before becoming a priest.
“Unfortunately, I had to consume, for two weeks, 7,000 calories, and then for another two weeks, 11,000 calories. When “Good Joe Bell” debuted at last year’s TIFF, there was buzz about the film being an Oscar contender for star Mark Wahlberg. But when after the debut, the reviews were published that showed the film wasn’t the awards contender many thought it would be, as it failed to live up to the inspiring true story it’s based on. So, the film went back to the editing room and got a new title, “Joe Bell.”
