Annette Bening is set to star alongside Anya Taylor-Joy in the upcoming Apple TV+ limited series “Lucky,” Variety has learned.

It was announced that Taylor-Joy would star in the series back in December. It is based on the novel of the same name by Marissa Stapley. The book was a New York Times bestseller and a selection for Reese Witherspoon’s Reese’s Book Club.

Per the official description, Taylor-Joy stars as “a young woman who left behind the life of crime she was raised in years ago, but must now embrace her darker, criminal side one final time in a desperate attempt to escape her past.”

Legendary Hollywood icons Annette Bening, Richard Linklater, and Jerry Bruckheimer will be celebrated at the 2024 Scad Savannah Film Festival.

The Savannah College of Art and Design (Scad) has announced its first list of honorees for the 2024 festival, which will take place from October 26 to November 2. This year, “Nyad” star Bening’s legacy will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The ceremony will take place after a screening of Bening’s 1990 film “The Grifters.”

Similarly, “Hit Man” writer/director Linklater will receive the Lifetime Achievement in Screenwriting Award, with the Netflix film screening at the festival.

Mega-producer Bruckheimer will reflect on his career during an In Conversation event before receiving the Legend of Entertainment Award at the festival.

Ja Bayona’s real-life disaster drama was at number three in the chart, behind action titles Damsel and Lift, with 103.8 million views. Other notable titles in the top 100 included Sam Esmail’s Leave The World Behind, in 35th place with 40.5 million views, and Richard Linklater’s 2024 Venice premiere Hit Man – 47th with 30.9 million views.

British Film Institute’s London Film Festival annual Screen Talks returns with a star-studded lineup that includes Andrea Arnold, Sean Baker, Steve McQueen, Lupita Nyong’o, Zoe Saldaña, and many more.

After featured Martin Scorsese, Andrew Haigh, and Lulu Wang spoke at the festival in 2023, this year’s crop of filmmakers represent the most highly-anticipated features on the 2024 festival circuit.

Sean Baker famously won the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2024 for “Anora,” which is an early Oscar frontrunner after IndieWire critic David Ehrlich praised the film for being a blend of “Uncut Gems” and “Pretty Woman.” At BFI, Baker will discuss his filmography including “Tangerine,” “The Florida Project,” and “Red Rocket.”

The packaging and financing of drama films has become increasingly challenging, a panel of experts told Winston Baker‘s inaugural Film & Television Finance Forum Venice on Friday afternoon. “Dramas have gone from being difficult to very difficult,” Benjamin Kramer, co-head of the media finance department at Creative Artists Agency (CAA), said during the panel entitled “State of the Industry: State of Finance.”

Still, “there are plenty of dramas of all budget tiers that get made … even $30 million,” noted Kramer, who has been involved in the packaging, financing, and sale of such films as Sing Sing, Nyad, and The Revenant. The funding and level of funding will always be “depending on the filmmaker, depending on the cast, depending on if it’s based on something significant,” he added.

Kramer’s comments came in response to a question from fellow panelist and Italian producer Lorenzo Gangarossa (Conclave).

Following a bidding war, Sony has won the rights to Michael Crichton’s volcano disaster novel, Eruption, with Keanu Reeves rumoured to be starring.

Here’s a story that has a few intriguing elements to it. Sony has paid what is believed to be a seven figure sum to acquire the rights to Eruption, a volcano disaster movie set in Hawaii. Bidding for the project is said to have been pretty fierce, not least because the project hails (in part) from the pen of the late Michael Crichton, whose work has proven to be a goldmine over the years for film adaptations.

Jurassic Park, Twister and Disclosure are just a few of the high-profile successes that have stemmed from the author’s work. Eruption, which Crichton spent two decades years writing before his death in 2008, ‘follows a history-making volcano explosion that is about to wipe away the big island of Hawaii.

She has two Best Actress Oscars and five nominations including one most recently for 2023’s Nyad. She received her first for 1976’s Taxi Driver when she was only 14. Add to these impressive accomplishments, three BAFTA awards, three Golden Globes, and an Honorary Palme d’Or among other accolades and honors. Still it is surprising to note she has never once been nominated for an Emmy for any acting role.

She does have two previous Emmys nominations behind the scenes, one for directing an episode of Orange Is The New Black, and one as a producer on the TV movie, The Baby Dance, but Foster is definitely overdue to jump into the Emmy race.

More recently, both were nominated in supporting categories at this year’s Oscars — Foster was nominated for her role as an encouraging swim coach in “Nyad,” and Downey won for playing a villainous government official in “Oppenheimer” — and played key roles in HBO limited series. Foster was a hard-bitten cop in “True Detective: Night Country,” writer-director Issa López’s reimagining of the crime franchise that centered on Alaska Native communities. Featuring a star-studded group of some of the best actresses from the entertainment world, the candid talks centered around a plethora of topics regarding showbiz. Additionally, the actresses left no holds barred in dropping truth bombs and opening up on the true reality of working in this industry along with the numerous challenges involved regularly.

Gertrude Ederle loved the water. “To me, the sea is like a person — like a child I’ve known a long time,” she once said. “ I never feel alone when I’m out there.”

That comfort combined with a dogged sense of determination led the young German American swimmer (played here by Daisy Ridley) to defy odds and sexist naysayers. In 1926, Ederle swam the English Channel in 14 hours and 31 minutes, beating the previous world record, which was held by a man. Her accomplishment helped change perceptions about women in competitive sports. When Ederle returned to New York, the city feted her with a parade on a scale never seen before (or since). They cheered her homecoming and dubbed her the Queen of the Waves.

Like all trailblazers, Ederle’s story began with obstacles and hostility, many of which director Joachim Rønning accords appropriate levels of respect in Young Woman and the Sea.

Jodie Foster may have been nominated at the Academy Awards for portraying a real-life rape survivor in “The Accused” (for which she ultimately won) as well as as a child prostitute in “Taxi Driver,” but now the actress is calling out the overwhelming trend throughout Hollywood history of male screenwriters relying on assault storylines to craft female characters.

Foster told The Hollywood Reporter that she was “always shocked” by how many scripts included a rape backstory for women.

“For most of my career, I was always shocked that so many of the scripts that I read, the entire motivation for the female character was that she’d been traumatized by rape. That seemed to be the only motivation that male screenwriters could come up with for why women did things,” Foster said. “‘She’s kind of in a bad mood, yeah, there’s definitely some rape in her past.'...

After making the leap to narrative filmmaking last year with “Nyad,” Oscar winners Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin have returned to their documentary roots and are currently at work in the edit suite prepping their next doc feature — “Lost in the Amazon” (working title), about how four Indigenous children survived for 40 days in the Amazon jungle after a plane crash in 2023. The story of their disappearance and eventual recovery transfixed the global media.

Pinewood Studios has sold its minority stake in the Dominican Republic’s horizon water tank facility, which has been renamed Lantica Studios after its now sole owner, Lantica Media.

Formerly known as the Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios, Lantica Studios is undertaking the building of a fourth soundstage, measuring 16,000 sq.ft., and two additional workshop spaces of 12,000 sq. ft each, mainly dedicated to housing camera, grip and electric equipment vendors. These are set to open by the Spring of 2025.

The landmark expansion comes as the 10-year-old studio has seen record growth in international and local production, which has led to the availability of more skilled crew in the Dominican Republic (Dr), either trained on the job or in regularly held workshops. “We’ve grown from hiring locals at an average rate of 400 – 500 a year to 2,000 a year,” said Albert Martinez, CEO of Lantica Studios.

“Train Dreams” is the sweeping and poignant tale of Robert Grainier (Edgerton), a day laborer employed as a logger helping to expand the railways across America. Forced to spend prolonged periods of time away from his wife, Gladys (Jones), and their young daughter, Grainier struggles to make sense of his place in a rapidly changing world. As his story unfolds, he experiences great love, unspeakable loss, and unique bonds on a journey that is both distinct and universal. The picture features a script by Bentley and Greg Kwedar (“Sing Sing”), which is adapted from Denis Johnson’s iconic, Pulitzer Prize-nominated novella of the same name.

Annette Bening is a five-time Oscar nominee, having recently garnered a bid for her leading turn in Netflix’s biographical drama “Nyad.” Bening is clearly having a great year as she also features in Peacock’s limited series “Apples Never Fall,” which could bring her back to the Emmys for the first time since 2006.

The limited series, adapted from the novel of “Big Little Lies” author Liane Moriarty, depicts four adult children trying to piece together the mystery behind the disappearance of their mother, played by Bening. Sam Neil, Jake Lacy, and Allison Brie all turn in fabulous supporting performances but this is Bening’s show, with the veteran actress performing at the peak of her powers.

Jodie Foster is undoubtedly one of the biggest female stars in Hollywood. The actress made a name for herself by playing the young prostitute Iris Steensma in Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, after having appeared in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore two years prior. But, while her filmography includes some important titles like The Accused (1988), Sommersby (1993), Maverick (1994), Contact (1997), Anna and the King (1999), Panic Room (2002), Flightplan (2005), Inside Man (2006), The Brave One (2007), Nim’s Island (2008), Carnage (2011), Elysium (2013), The Mauritanian (2021), and Nyad (2023), her best-known role is that of Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs, which also brought her her second Oscar. Recently, she also appeared in True Detective: Night Country.

But, while she has definitely gathered a large number of major roles, she has also – as you might have assumed – rejected and lost several other major roles, and from what we know now, one of these roles was a major Star Wars role.

Cillian Murphy obtained one of acting’s most coveted achievements when he won an Oscar for his leading role in “Oppenheimer.” But his award season run for the acclaimed Christopher Nolan film didn’t end with his big night at the Dolby Theater. The Irish actor went on to receive his home country’s highest acting honor on Sunday at the Irish Film and TV Academy Awards when he won the Lead Actor — Film category for “Oppenheimer.”

The ceremony honored the best Irish film and television of 2023, with Pat Collins’ “That They May Face the Rising Sun” winning Best Film. Other notable winners included Paul Mescal taking Supporting Actor for “All of Us Strangers” and Alison Oliver winning Supporting Actress for “Saltburn.”

Actress Jodie Foster, renowned for her roles in ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ and ‘Taxi Driver’, celebrated her 10th anniversary with her wife, Alexandra Hedison, in the most special manner. The 61-year-old actress got her hands and feet imprinted into the ground outside the Tcl Chinese Theatre during the 15th annual TCM Classic Film Festival, reports ‘People’ magazine.

Foster, who most recently appeared in the sports documentary ‘Nyad’, received support from various friends, including Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest, and her wife, Alexandra Hedison, who sat in the front row.

During her heartfelt speech, Foster acknowledged that it was the couple’s 10-year anniversary and expressed gratitude to Hedison, 54, for being “so generous” and “giving up” their special day for the event.

Hollywood has been obsessed with biopics for what seems like forever, but it's hard not to admit that our current film landscape is reaching critical mass with movies about famous people. I guess when they've run out of recognizable IP, they've gotta center stories about recognizable faces instead. Last year alone we saw "Maestro," "The Iron Claw," "Napoleon," "Ferrari," "Nyad," "Priscilla," and "Big George Forman," not to mention brand movies like "Blackberry," "Tetris," "Air," and "Barbie." And then, of course, there's "Oppenheimer," which not only took home seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, but also became the highest-grossing biopic of all time. No shade to our boy Oppy, but it seems like a new film from Antoine Fuqua is coming for that title and the fact it's a movie about the most famous musical performer to ever live certainly gives the project a leg up on the father of the atomic bomb.

The Series Mania Festival’s top prize for best series went to Rematch, a French-Hungarian drama about the historic match between chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov and Ibm’s Deep Blue computer.

The best actress prize went to Annette Bening for her role in Apples Never Fall, the first major TV role up from the five-time Oscar nominee. Kamel El Basha won best actor for the Australian drama House of Gods, in which he played the charismatic head cleric of a big city mosque.

In the Apples Never Fall adaptation, based on the novel by Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty, Bening plays Joy Delaney, family matriarch and patient wife to the irascible former tennis pro, Stan (Sam Neill). When Joy disappears, the four adult Delaney children are forced to reassess everything they thought they knew about their parents and their family history. Annette Bening’s first major TV series role has won the five-time Oscar nominee the Best Actress prize at this year’s Series Mania.

Bening was awarded in the past few minutes at the prestigious Lille event for her leading role in Peacock series Apples Never Fall, an adaptation of a novel by Big Little Lies scribe Liane Moriarty.

The coveted grand prize was given to French-Hungarian chess drama Rematch about the historic 1997 chess battle between Garry Kasparov and an Ibm computer. It beat off competition from the likes of Apples Never Fall, MGM+’s Hotel Cocaine and Leonard Cohen show So Long, Marianne.

Apples Never Fall stars Bening as Joy Delaney, a matriarch former tennis coach married to the irritable Stan (Neill), who suddenly goes missing, leaving her four children to piece together everything they thought they knew about their parents.

The six-part National Geographic docuseries features seven photographers — Cristina Mittermeier and Paul Nicklen, Dan Winters, Campbell Addy, Krystle Wright, Muhammed Muheisen, and Anand Varma. Vérité footage of each subject’s current mission is interwoven with interviews and archival footage to demonstrate how each photographer approaches their work, the intention behind that work, their process, and how they each discover, see and experience the world.

Oppenheimer and Poor Things dominated the 2024 Oscars, winning seven and four awards respectively. Redoing the Oscars so each movie can only win one Oscar changes the outcomes of many categories. Some categories remain the same, but many others get different winners.

The 2024 Oscars were dominated by Oppenheimer and Poor Things, and the Academy Awards would look very different if each movie could only win one Oscar. The 96th Academy Awards was one of the biggest in recent memory. Thanks to box office hits like Oppenheimer and Barbie contending in multiple categories, interest was much higher than the rest of this decade. It also helped that new movies from Martin Scorsese and Yorgos Lanthimos racked up nominations. Ultimately, it was Oppenheimer's 13 nominations and seven Oscar wins that led the way during the actual ceremony.

Some may reflect genius or gut instinct; others are timing and preparation creating luck. In each case, distribution (or the lack thereof) played a significant role in positioning the films for success — but none of them could be considered a template.

At the Oscars on Sunday night, the winners were once again predominantly men of all ages, followed by women in their twenties and thirties. Despite a growing focus on diversity, positive outcomes of the #MeToo movement for women, a handful of glamorous, touted roles, and the billion-dollar box office haul of “Barbie,” the wonderful women of “Barbie” were, predictably, all but eclipsed by the men of “Barbie.”

Fresh from his Academy Award win for best actor, “Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy now has a chance to claim the same honor at his local awards.

The Irish Film and TV Academy (IFTA) has unveiled the nominees for its 2024 awards, with Murphy going up against “Saltburn’s'” Barry Keoghan and “All of Us Strangers” star Andrew Scott in the best actor category. Elsewhere, Jessie Buckley (“Fingernails”) and Saoirse Ronan (“Foe”) are among those nominated for best actress, while Paul Mescal (“All of Us Strangers”) and Kenneth Branagh (“Oppenheimer”) are in the running for best supporting actor.

But it was actually Irish features leading the pack of nominees, with Lisa Mulcahy’s “Lies We Tell” landing 13, followed by “That They May Face the Rising Sun” and “Double Blind.”

The IFTAs ceremony will be take place on April 20 at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre with Irish TV personality Baz Ashmawy on hosting duties.
