I don't understand the reviewers here glorifying this as the best Sinhala movie ever. Don't get me wrong. This is a good movie but definitely not the best Sinhala movie. Aloko Udapadi marks a milestone in Sri Lankan cinema. It is ahead of any Sri Lankan movie ever created in terms of technology. Hats off to Chatra Weeraman for stepping up.
The movie has good camera-work and decent music. It gives the chills to any Sri Lankan who is watching it.As I mentioned before the technology used is next level for Sri Lankan cinema. The acting is decent. Uddika Premaratne does a good job with the screen time he is given and the supporting cast is also good. The action could have been better in terms of choreography but is still good. The plus points stop there.
The story is very bad. There is no real plot development or depth. The movie just takes some scenes from the history books and join them together. There is no flow from one scene to another and the viewer isn't really made aware of how the story leads to each scene. The power struggle between the antagonists are highlighted in the movie but isn't shown in depth and isn't believable. The characters are not developed well. They just do things the plot wants to do without any backstory or development. The main character should and could have been shown in depth. The movie is definitely inspired from Game of Thrones. It tries to be a historical character drama of power struggle and fails in that aspect. It tries not glorifying the main character and fails in adding depth to the characters. It tries all the right things and fails in some of the most important areas.
In summary Aloko Udapadi is definitely a good movie and marks the next level in Sri Lankan cinema. But the movie lacks a good story and character depth among other things. Next movies should improve on what Aloko Udapadi has done right and learn from it's mistakes.
Finally I should say that this movie doesn't deserve a 9.9. For all the Sri Lankans out there trying to glorify this as the perfect movie, I ask you not to be satisfied with this. Give a score this movie deserves so that the makers will improve on it in the next projects. This shouldn't be the peak of Sri Lankan cinema.

One giant leap for the cinema industry of Sri Lanka would be Aloko Udapadi's cinematography. The movie starts out slow, but suddenly takes a turn into an exciting movie. And while the action starts, viewers may forget to notice its in cinematography, but the production crew does not. Every scene is visually stunning. The fighting scenes were surprisingly well choreographed and the music hit in you in all the write places.
The cast had perfect chemistry and all actors delivered their lines to perfection. Although their were some minor cast members who killed the role with overacting.
One other flaw was that some scenes would just start abruptly with no flow in the structure. This was clearly visible in the final scene where the battle started.
Overall this movie is one that has definitely changed Sri Lanka's film industry for good. The old guard better watch out.
One major suggestion I would like to give to the production team is that now that they've done a historical movie, maybe move on to another genre, rather than following the same genre (Which is what the Sri Lankan film industry has been doing for quite a while)
Other than that, Kudos to you guys, hats off to a stunning movie. I enjoyed every second of it.

One of the bests in the history of Sri Lankan Cinema... A superb cinematic classic! The entire Buddhist world should know how the Dhamma, they refer now, was protected by Sri Lankans, many centuries ago. A golden chapter in the history and highly appreciable effort by the crew and the stars. Please take this to the world.

Very well done #ChathraWeeraman
The best Sinhala movie I've ever watched. Takes us back to our golden history and rich culture and the amount of sacrifices made by our ancestors to protect this motherland.
Hope this film breaks all records of the history of the Srilankan film arena. Camera angles and direction seems to be at its optimum. Though this is the first effort of the young music director, he has done his best and has achieved the best.
Aloko Udapadi is Literally an awesome piece of work which nicely depicts the Epic Effort of a dedicated human community to preserve for the whole of mankind and for all time, a unique cultural and spiritual heritage - overcoming formidable obstacles.

Watch this brilliant movie last weekend. Which I have to say is done very well. Great acting by most actors, great music and reasonably good action scenes as well. As it is about a true incident in the Sri Lankan history as a fellow Sri Lankan it touched me on most emotional scenes.
The use of computer graphics and 3D models were quite minimum. Which is a good thing as they were not that great.
Getting the participation of actual monks for the movie was a great idea by the way. It made it feel much more realistic.
Again props to the actors, actresses, music composer and specially the Director. Well done guys. Proud of you.

Aloko Udapadhi, a master piece by Chathra.
For the last couple of years many pointed failures in Sri Lankan film industry. Aloko Udapadhi has proved that it is not going to be the same anymore. This film successfully handle the blend of traditional film shooting and CGI graphics. Music, Casting, and locations are magnificent.
Story line is great. Flow of the story from begin to end can be watched without any distraction.
If you are a Sri Lankan you must watch this film and witness the great come back of Sri Lankan film industry.

There's a lot of of talk about the recently released film Aloko Udapadi in the town. So is the hype really worth it? Lets find out! I watched this in a theatre yesterday and interestingly ended up with mixed results. First I should accede that unless the pros I've mentioned above in the summary, the film was an extreme blow. Surprisingly the film had no twist, no astonishing moments, nothing to be triumphed about. The choky and drawsy plot directly puts the writer on a stricture. I mean almost everyone in SL is aware of the story of King Walagamba. They know how it begins and how it ends. So people need something more than the basic ancient story to enjoy the film. And thats what the film lacks most. I thought that the plot will be more interesting and will has a flow in it than the boring movies made recently such as Maharaja Gemunu, Paththini etc. But unfortunately I was put down. Yet the film is a greater solace to the local audience as its quality of cinematography is at close- run with of internationals. I was impressed by the vishuals, music and the amazing fight scenes of traditional martial art, "Angampora". And it looks like the film got a tiny bit of influence from GoT! :) Eventually I hope that Aloko Udapadi will be a greater impact to the future of Sri Lankan Film Industry.
It is a Cinematic masterpiece in Sinhala Cinema.
During recent times we witnessed a lot of Sinhala movies with a Historical story line. But None of the movies were able to create such "Realness" and "Liveness" in their visuals. With some astonishing camera work and some stunning choice of locations, this movie has produced some excellent cinematic which were never evident in movies which came before.
To a generation that have seen, English movies like "Lord of the Rings", Aloko Udapadi will be promising that Sinahala Cinema will soon match their expectations of a Historical movie.
However the mediocre Script leads the movie to a series of unconnected scenes (despite a spot on opening part) with no effort to exaggerate the key milestone of the movie which could have made the viewer kept more emotionally attached to the movie. Yet it will not be enough to prevent one from saying that Aloko Udapadi is the best thing happened to the Sinhala Cinema in recent times.

This is by far the best movie (all round) of the Sri Lankan movie industry so far. Excellent story line and perfect selection of crew. Uddika Premarathna proves again that he's the only actor who can represent a proud, great king by all the aspects.
Usage of 3D Animations and effects is tremendous. With the very limited tech and financial scope of the local movie industry, the director Chathra Weeraman had done a miracle! I could enjoy every second of the movie and I had NO negative comments on this movie at all. Start, flow and end were absolutely fabulous.
Music and sound effects are PERFECT throughout the movie and I felt like I was living in our ancient, proud history which made the movie an unforgettable experience to the audience. This movie is an eye opener to most of the Sri Lankans who are forgetting its GREAT history. I recommend this move to every Sri Lankan and the whole world! This is an epic movie you must watch.

This movie is plotted around the true history of Sri Lanka. It touched important areas such as the role of Buddhism, the sacrifices ancient people made to protect Buddhism and ancient martial art technique- Angampora. I was more than impressed with this movie. I usually like movies based on strategy and war. I will rank this movie at the top of the collection. This movie was also emotional. The viewers can definitely take a positive message at the end.
The visual effects were great. This would be an important milestone in Sinhala cinema to reach international level. I congratulate all who were involved in this movie.

I am not a person who gives a 10/10 easily. But comparing with other movies of late, this is 'a Gem of a movie'. Chithra Veeraman in my opinion will be the one to look out for in the coming years.
The story line and the script is excellent. Apart from few jumps, the story is very clear and concise. Acting is superb from all the main characters. Graphics are leagues better than what Sri Lankan cinema used to produce in the past.
The movie as a whole takes you through an emotional roller coaster and will leave you in tears many a time. Every Sri Lankan, MUST watch this... Especially (not limited to) Buddhists.
All the very best Mr. Veeraman... We eagerly await to see more from you in the future.

While saying that this is a good movie, the rating of 9.9 at the moment is not well deserved. It is a result of facebook campaign (not launched by the film crew, but Sri Lankan patriotic manner). I'd rather give 6.
Let's talk about good of that film.
The portrayal of the ancient Sri Lankan society and the reign is impeccable and realistic. It is pretty obvious that the director knows what he is doing. He has done his research on it. The attention to the details is appreciable. Surely this film set the bar up for the Sri Lankan movies and for the trending historic movies as well. One of the best things in this film is the minimum use of CGI. For the last years, most of the sinhala films ruined the cinema quality due to crappy CGI (Sri Lankan film industry is not huge enough to afford high end CGI techs). In this film they have used appropriate amount of Graphics in a good way. Kudos for that. Last but not list, the screen writer is a top notch as he was able to deliver the message that in a war there is a tragedy under that victory and ithas to be carried out with a lot of patience. This movie has to be applaud with a huge success at box office.

I'm Chaminda Jayawardana currently working for VFX industry in Sri Lanka. I watched this movie and really thought there are no any VFX works but real Sets. WOW. but there were. Hats off for VFX department. They have done a tremendous work there that we haven't seen on a Sri Lankan film before. Congratulations Chathra Weeraman the director of Aloko Udapadi, for creating this masterpiece. Hats off for the producer who contributed in maximum level to make this.
The story line was nice to reach lots of audiences and to reach international level. Nice camera work. But personally i still need a bit heavy punch when fight scenes. But those fight scenes are so realistic when that ancient fighting style comes to screen.
The main thing I need to say is now we know we are not so far from Hollywood. We are there !
Congratulations and Thanks to all the production team form production to the theatrical release. You guys are Great !

One of best movie I seen ever.. I recommend it for all Sri Lankans. This movie present our valuable history in Sri Lanka actors are doing super job and they give a real idea about what they act. EX: In 89 BC, King Walagamba of Sri Lanka, was troubled by power-hungry forces from within and from outside. A severe drought assailed the land for twelve unbroken years. Monks who perpetuated Buddha's word by oral tradition, could not survive. The monks were troubled both by the enemy and the famine. In the dark days, the loyal subjects protected their King. Enemy leaders killed each other for power and wealth. Well armed, the King dealt a deadly blow and regained the rule. In peace and prosperity, the monks facing the challenge wrote down the oral tradition.

Aloko Udapadi (2017) in my opinion is the finest of the Sri Lankan historic cinema.
It is the best film that depicts a historic theme with a cinematic achievement after Aba (2008), Siri Parakum (2014) and Maha Raja Gemunu (2015).
His cinematographic achievement is unparalleled.
Many critics and audiences finds wrong in his depiction of character, story and history.
In my opinion Sri Lanka has a dying film industry and innovative and crowd pleasing films like this comes very rarely.
And to attract crowds to film you basically needs eye candy. So this is it. To go to substance over style first in my opinion, the Sri Lankan industry needs Style over substance. Now this film lays foundation to that.
This is Chathra Weeraman's first film and it deserves it's praise.
