Jessica Williams found her footing on “Shrinking” long before the Apple TV+ comedy’s penultimate episode. But there’s a moment of sheer joy and improvisation in Episode 9, “Moving Forward,” that Williams says is her favorite of the entire first season. After her character, Gaby, walks in on a post-coital moment Paul (Harrison Ford) shares with his doctor Julie (Wendie Malick), Gaby’s response is one of shock, admiration, and childlike wonder.
“All of that I feel like is one of the things I’m most proud of this season,” Williams tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “I love the way it was edited and directed, and they caught so many good moments. And I even like when Gaby leaves the scene, and Harrison’s just rolling his eyes at me. There’s just so much there that I really love. I’m so happy that just gets...

"I think I might have feelings for someone I've never met." Sony Pictures has revealed an official Valentine's Day trailer for a romantic comedy called Love Again, made by the filmmaker Jim Strouse. It's based on a book that was already turned into another German movie called Text for You, which is about the story and a woman who finds love over texts. Which sounds a bit scary more than lovely. A young woman tries to ease the pain of her fiancé's death (who walks out after an argument and never returns unfortunately) by sending romantic texts to his old cell phone number, and forms a connection with the man the number has been reassigned to. "What if love was only a text away?" The movie features new music from Celine Dion, and stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Sam Heughan, Russell Tovey, Celia Imrie, Lydia West, Omid Djalili, plus Celine Dion.

This post contains minor spoilers for the Apple TV+ series "Shrinking."
Jessica Williams helps make "Shrinking" a feel-good hangout show. There's plenty of plot in the Apple series, which is co-created by Brett Goldstein, Bill Lawrence, and Jason Segel, but it's mostly characters hanging out and talking through their days. Williams plays one of the main trio of therapists in the comedy, Gaby, who works alongside Jason Segel and Harrison Ford's characters. When the three of them are together in a scene, it's nice and breezy comedy ... usually with some pain behind it.
The former co-host of the 2 Dope Queens podcast and senior correspondent for "The Daily Show" plays a character trying to enjoy her day and help others do the same. Gaby is, as "The Incredible Jessica James" star put it, the therapist people want in their lives. Recently, the actress told us about her experience on...

The latest in our series of writers highlighting lesser known movies is a recommendation for a witty 2017 comedy about arrested development
Jessica James is a certified mess. A heart-rending breakup has reduced her to Instagram-stalking her ex and rebounding with an emotionally wrecked divorcee who is also groping for closure. A wall of theatre company rejection letters has her doubting her career as a playwright and lashing out at work, where she mentors kid dramaturges. And her younger sister – who, between her husband and Jessica’s own parents back in Ohio, would seem to have it all, is expecting. Barely 25, Jessica is convinced she’s missed her chance to “make it” and the idea that she could spend the rest of her life in this arrested stage of development haunts her as much as the idea of giving up and giving in to first world gender norms. It would...

Jordan Peele is working hard, building up the ensemble cast for his new reboot series The Twilight Zone. The latest actors to get cast are DeWanda Wise (from Spike Lee’s Netflix series She’s Gotta Have It) and Jessica Williams.

She leaves her professional and personal life behind, in favor of traveling to England and reconnecting with old friends and ends up in the midst of their personal crises. Relationships are forged and broken, political scandals exposed, London social life lampooned, love affairs ignited and doused, and of course there are four weddings–and a funeral.
Patel has been cast as Kash, Rittenhouse has been cast as Ainsley, and Reynolds has been cast as Duffy.

HBO has ordered a second series of 2 Dope Queen specials featuring Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson based on their hit comedy Wnyc podcast. The four new hour-long specials are slated to premiere in 2019.
The duo’s first series of specials debuted to critical acclaim last February. Tig Notaro directed the four shows, which featured special guests Uzo Aduba, Tituss Burgess, Sarah Jessica Parker and Jon Stewart.

Gotham alum Zabryna Guevara and Dorian Missick (Animal Kingdom) are set for key roles in CBS All Access’ straight-to-series psychological thriller Tell Me a Story, from Kevin Williamson and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment.
Written by Williamson, Tell Me a Story, which co-stars Billy Magnussen and Kim Catrall, is based on a Spanish format. It takes the world’s most beloved fairy tales and reimagines them as a dark and twisted psychological thriller. Set in modern day New York City, the first season of this serialized drama interweaves “The Three Little Pigs,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” and “Hansel and Gretel” into an epic and subversive tale of love, loss, greed, revenge and murder.
Guevara will play Detective Renee Garcia, a measured detective who operates by the book. While tough and unrelenting, she is not without empathy. She’s the type of detective who trusts her instincts but knows hard evidence...

The romantic comedy is back, or at least in the very early throes of coming back, thanks to films like “Book Club,” the upcoming Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder reunion “Destination Wedding,” and a slew of Netflix originals churning out at a rapid pace. In fact, it may be that Netflix is the one saving the genre, or at least reminding viewers just how much fun it can be to watch two nice people fall in love against a backdrop of misadventures and high jinks. This week sees the release of the streamer’s latest original, “Set It Up,” which joins a healthy selection of rom-coms currently available for instant streaming.
From classics like “The African Queen” to festival breakouts like “The Incredible Jessica James” and unexpected gems like “I Give It a Year,” Netflix is filled with prime examples of all the loving, funny offerings the genre still has to offer.

Comedians work well in pairs: Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy, Nichols and May. But it’s high time for a new dynamic duo, and they call themselves “2 Dope Queens.” Out of a smash hit podcast and monthly live show in Brooklyn, stand-up comedians Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson fashioned their very own four-part HBO series, which will air every Friday in February. If HBO needs to use Black History Month as a reason to program these fierce talents, we’re not complaining. But after a few hours with these two, you might find yourself wishing every month was Black History Month.

The 2018 Sundance Film Festival has passed, and a quiet year for deals and buzz led some to speculate films focused on people of color and women were the reason for fewer acquisitions. “Who are these movies for?” griped an influential distributor to Variety. On Twitter, “Blindspotting” producer Keith Calder perfectly summed up the fallacy in that question: “White male privilege is thinking a movie that doesn’t appeal to you is a movie that doesn’t appeal to anyone. If you are a film executive attending Sundance… at least have the class and self-respect to not anonymously trash those movies in the press.” (“Blindspotting” eventually sold to Lionsgate at the end of the festival.)

The Incredible Jessica James is a marvel to watch -- at a sharp 85 minutes, it breezes by as if on a cloud. It premiered on Netflix last week, and tells the story of its leading character named, you guessed it! Jessica James (Jessica Williams). Living flat broke in "deep, deep" Bushwick, she is harping over the recent break-up of her and her ex (Lakeith Stanfield), all the while struggling to get one of her plays produced on Broadway.
When given the chance to go on a blind date with an app creator (Chris O'Dowd), Jessica soon finds herself questioning herself, her potential as a writer, and what it means to be a 20-something living in contemporary New York City. If that plot sounds generic, well, it is. But what makes the film truly soar is its star, Jessica Williams. ...

Netflix’s Sundance hit is powered by the knockout charm of its star, Jessica Williams, while Jake Gyllenhaal heads up a philosophical Alien knockoff

Jessica James stars the talented Jessica Williams as Jessica James in an optimistic, engaging story of a struggling playwright in New York. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, like every film Jim has made, and is being released by Netflix - it's available to watch now. I caught up with Jim at the Sundance Film Festival this year for a chat, and I'm happy to finally present our interview in full.

Jessica Williams: Why She Quit ‘The Daily Show’ and Bet Her Career On ‘The Incredible Jessica James’
Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.
When long-time “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart announced his intention to leave his popular Comedy Central program in February 2015, Jessica Williams received plenty of buzz as a potential replacement that could lead the show into the next era of smart, amusing reporting. Williams, however, had different ideas.
Just weeks earlier, the budding actress and comedian had been bouncing around the Sundance Film Festival, happily hawking her first big movie role in James Strouse’s “People Places Things.” That happiness was definitely earned, because Williams’ work in the film — as a super-smart art student who plays matchmaker for her recently divorced teacher (Jemaine Clement) and her single mother (Regina Hall) — proved that her comedic chops could translate to an entirely new medium.
