The cast of Downton Abbey: A New Era is, as fans hoped, also identical to that of Downton Abbey 2019, with one notable exception. However, the Crawley family and their servants also welcome some new visitors to their great house in Yorkshire UK, meaning there are a few fresh faces on screen too. In Downton Abbey: A New Era, the Crawleys travel to the South of France after Lady Violet, the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) reveals a former flame has left her a seaside villa in his will. Meanwhile, a film production arrives to shoot a movie at Downton Abbey, which creates excitement for the servants and chaos for Lady Mary Talbot (Michelle Dockery).
Downton Abbey: A New Era also features the wedding of Tom Branson (Allen Leech) to Lucy Smith (Tuppence Middleton) after they were engaged in the previous Downton Abbey movie. The Crawleys' lives change forever as the...

The Hollywood guilds and professional organizations have for the most part finished handing out their awards for the films of 2019, with “Parasite” and “1917” emerging as the year’s big winners.
Bong Joon Ho’s Korean-language black comedy won the most guild awards, five, but Sam Mendes’ World War I drama won four, including two of the biggest ones, from the Producers Guild and Directors Guild. Given the results, it’s no secret why those two films are the clear frontrunners heading into Sunday’s Oscars, or why “Jojo Rabbit” – which also won four – is coming on strong as well.
In this count, we’re including the guilds or professional organizations who align with an Oscars category. That leaves out the Artios Awards, which is given to casting directors, and the Guild of Music Supervisors, which largely goes to supervisors, though it has one songwriting award for film.

We never knew we needed one more “Little Women” until Greta Gerwig flexed her adaptive smarts. Now, freshness and fizz has been applied to another oft-filmed classic, Jane Austen’s adored novel “Emma,” which in the hands of photographer-turned-filmmaker Autumn de Wilde, screenwriter Eleanor Catton, and a stellar cast led by rising star Anya Taylor-Joy, is once again a deeply satisfying blend of cross-purposed manners and romantic mismanagement.
Arriving a quarter-century after Amy Heckerling’s delightful Beverly Hills update (“Clueless”) and the shiny 1996 bauble that bolstered Gwyneth Paltrow’s ascendancy, the latest rendering of literature’s most elegantly deluded and self-satisfied female Cupid feels like a flinty, intelligent engagement with Austen’s nuanced characters and lasting ironies rather than a slick excuse to keep “Downton Abbey” fans happy with more English finery and frippery.

Despite season 3 having only recently arrived on Netflix, talk has already turned towards upcoming runs of royal drama The Crown. Currently, Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman is the one bringing Queen Elizabeth II to life, but given that she’s only booked in for seasons 3 and 4, we know that someone else will soon be stepping into the role. And earlier today, Netflix revealed who that would be.
Deadline reports that Imelda Staunton will be the one taking over the part in The Crown‘s fifth season. Yes, the diabolical Dolores Umbridge herself will be portraying her Majesty. Directed and co-written by Florian Zeller from his own play, The Father doesn’t have much visual flair. It’s a first feature, largely takes place in one apartment, and centers on two characters. Its most consistent motif being frames within frame: doorways lead to hallways and corridors; paintings domineer rooms like portals to a world half remembered. Scenes, sequences, and arcs fray at the edges until they snake in on themselves. But for a movie as low-key movie as it is quietly brutal, this may have been the most fitting choice.
It’s a simple premise: Anthony (Anthony Hopkins) is an elderly man living in his London flat. Well, it seems so at first—then comes his daughter, Anne (Olivia Colman), who makes mention of it being her apartment. Her husband, Paul (Rufus Sewell), comes in and she mentions the two moving to Paris soon. But wait: that means...

Steven Soderbergh’s 2011 thriller about the spread of a deadly virus has been back in the iTunes Top 10 – so is this epidemic another thing we can blame on Gwyneth Paltrow?
Conventional wisdom has it that audiences flock to escapism in troubled times, but an unexpected new entry on the UK iTunes movie rental chart suggests otherwise. Nestling among the current hits is a film made nine years ago that paints a more terrifying picture of humanity than Joker and Downton Abbey combined. The picture, which stars Gwyneth Paltrow and concerns a deadly virus with the potential to decimate the global population, has, in a very real sense, gone viral.

The UK’s film and TV industries are undergoing an unprecedented boom. Last year, production spend on these shores exceeded $4.7bn (£3.6bn), a 16% increase on the previous highest on record, according to statistics published by the British Film Institute (BFI) today.
However, while inward investment skyrocketed last year, UK domestic production decreased across the board.

Shows including The Crown, His Dark Materials, Killing Eve, Avenue 5, and The North Water at least part-filmed in the UK last year. There were 123 productions in total.

But don’t count on “Jojo Rabbit” repeating at the Academy Awards. In its 22-year history, the Cdg has previewed only 10 of the Oscar winners for Best Costume Design. This year’s frontrunner at the Academy Awards is “Little Women,” which was snubbed by the guild as were two of the other nominees, “The Irishman” and “Joker.”

PBS' hit series Downton Abbey tackles a lot of issues, from historical events to class relationships to the speed of social progress. Arguably though, the series is far more concerned with one thing: romance. So much of the series is a big game of "will they won't they?."

Obviously, there was the central struggle for Lady Mary to find a proper suitor, but this was an issue for a lot of characters. Throughout the series, whether they were an aristocrat or a servant, there were many near-romantic connections that could have lead to full marriage.

From the pilot episode to the recent film release, Downton Abbey's cast of colorful characters has entertained audiences. Viewers have fallen in love with the likes of Lady Mary, Mr. Carson, Lord Grantham, and more, following their escapades around early 20th century England.

While the heroes of the series are some of the most likable on TV, the villains are some of the most despised. The worst of humanity can still be found at a grand house like Downton. Throughout its six seasons and film release, these characters have been a thorn in the side of Downtown's residents.

As The Irishman begins the home stretch to the Oscars are you in need of another mob movie fix? Like Scorsese, this director has a history of flicks about the “thug life” featuring guys and goons that can “lean” on anybody that gets in the way. Well, this is one quite a bit different as it’s not set on the mean streets of East Coast USA, but rather in swinging (like a pendulum do’) London, so it’s got an international flavor. Plus this flick expands past Picadilly into the country estates and castles (hitmen at Downton Abbey. oh dear). So it involves the elite, but people who don’t fret about getting blood spilled on those custom-tailored suits and gowns. Yet, somehow most of the world believes that these “goodfellas'” can still be called The Gentlemen.

Arriving several years after the sixth and final season of the television series, Downton Abbey reintroduced us to the Crawley family and the opulence of the titular location. I honestly wasn't sure how well a feature-film version of the TV series would fare, but the low-budget film went on to gross $192 million worldwide and received largely positive reviews, which, as we know, spells…...

Apple TV+’s new Chris Evans-led thriller Defending Jacob will debut this spring with a three-episode premiere, the company announced Sunday. The streaming service will drop the series’ first offerings on Friday, April 24, and new episodes will follow weekly thereafter.
Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by William Landay, the character-driven thriller will be a limited-series that unfolds around a shocking crime in a small Massachusetts town. It follows an assistant district attorney (Evans) who “finds himself torn between his sworn duty to uphold justice and his unconditional love for his son,” according to the streamer’s official description.

Sunday marks Apple TV+’s big debut at the biannual Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour, which means a lot of attention will be coming to the streaming service today — especially on Twitter. But not if rival Disney+ can help it.

Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes will start working on a sequel to the ITV and PBS drama’s feature film once he’s finished scripting HBO drama The Gilded Age.
Fellowes, speaking after his Winter TCA press tour session to promote Epix and ITV drama Belgravia, said that he is currently in pre-production for that long-gestating drama series and expects to shoot later this year.
When asked when he would start writing a movie sequel, he joked, “Give us a break, gov. Not until I’ve finished the scripts for The Gilded Age.”
He added that The Gilded Age, which moved from NBC to HBO last year, was in “reasonably good shape” and was pleased with the casting, which includes The Good Fight star Christine Baranski, Sex and the City alumna Cynthia Nixon, Brockmire’s Amanda Peet and The Plot Against America’s Morgan Spector.

Julian Fellowes admits that his new Epix historical period limited series “Belgravia” bears a lot in common with “Downton Abbey,” but they are not, in fact, the same show. “Well, I think there are bound to be some similarities because they’re written by the same guy and there’s a kind of limit to how many voices one possesses,” Fellowes said at the Television Critics Association press tour on Saturday. “I think it is different from ‘Downton’ because it has a tauter narrative. It’s a single narrative; a completed story at the end. By the end of Episode 6, we’ve gotten to the end of the story. It isn’t open-ended in [the same] way.” “Belgravia,” based on Fellowes’ own novel, is a story of secrets and scandals amongst the upper echelon of London society in the 19th century. Fellowes, along with “Downton” collaborators Gareth Neame, Nigel Marchant and Liz Trubridge...

Epix has put into development a trio of scripted series: one that takes place in King Arthur’s time, another from the Elizabethan era and the third in 1984.
“The Winter King,” a drama series adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s trilogy of Arthurian novels “The Warlord Chronicles,” hails from Bad Wolf.
“Gibson Station,” from producer/writer/director Edward Burns, is a dramedy set in 1984 that revolves around three 20-something best friends setting out to pursue their dreams and seek out their place in Ronald Reagan’s America.
“A Column of Fire” is based on the novel by international best-selling author Ken Follett. The Elizabethan-era drama follows the romance between Ned Willard and Margery Fitzgerald and is written by Lizzie Mickery and produced by Snowed-In Productions and Sony Pictures Television. Ruth Kenley-Letts and Mickery are executive producers.

NBC Universal's Peacock will open its doors in April for a select group of people, before having a full-fledged launch in July, it has been announced.
Comcast's Xfinity X1 and Flex customers will get early access to the service beginning Wednesday, April 15, while everyone else will be able to stream effective July 15.
NBC Universal has announced a free ad-supported tier for the service called Peaock Free, but there will also be Peacock Premium ($5 a month for Comcast and Cox subscribers and $9.99 for everyone else).
There is a major caveat with the free option, however, with the company noting that subscribers will only have access to “select episodes of marquee Peacock originals,” as opposed to the full seasons the Peacock Premium crowd will have access to.

Another modern-classic sitcom has found its streaming home — but it’s not going to the home that produced it. “Two and a Half Men” will stream exclusively on NBCUniversal’s forthcoming streaming service, Peacock, the platform announced during a Comcast investor event in New York on Thursday.

U.K. cinema admissions exceeded 176 million last year, worth over $1.63 billion (£1.25 billion) at the box office, according to industry body Cinema First.
The 2019 admissions figure is just short of 2018’s 177 million, when U.K. cinema-going reached its highest level in 50 years.
The figures suggest that cinema-going is holding up in the market, despite the popularity of streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon.

Maggie Smith became a major celebrity thanks to her role as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter franchise. However, to be honest, that is a sad thing to say. Smith is a tremendous actress who has a lot more to her than a young adult movie franchise, no matter how popular it was. As a matter of fact, she is just one of many British heavyweights that signed on as adults in the world of the Boy Wizard.

The 2020 Oscar nominations went pretty much as we predicted although there were several surprises included on the roster of contenders and even more shocking omissions. With only nine Best Picture nominees, there was no room for our final Top 10 finisher, “Bombshell.” It numbers among the films up for Best Ensemble at the SAG Awards.
Even bigger jaw-droppers came from the directors branch who snubbed the DGA nominee Taika Waititi (“Jojo Rabbit”) and denied “Little Women” helmer Greta Gerwig the chance to make Oscar history as the first female director with two nominations.
Likewise, we were surprised that the writers branch spurned several of the Writers Guild of America Awards contenders including the teams behind the original script “Booksmart” and the adaptation “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.”

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” is predicted to lead with the most Oscar nominations on Monday morning, racking up a whopping 10 bids. Right behind Quentin Tarantino‘s fable about Tinseltown will be two very different movies — Martin Scorsese‘s crime drama “The Irishman” and Sam Mendes‘ WWI epic “1917” — with nine nominations apiece for the 92nd annual Academy Awards. All three of these films will number Best Picture nominations among their haul for their 2020 Oscars.

With the shortened awards timeline, ceremonies hit hard and fast. Sunday night marks the 25th annual Critics’ Choice Awards, airing on The CW beginning at 7pm Est/7pm Pst. Taye Diggs returns as host the proceedings, which take place in the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, presented by the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association. On the film side, this year’s nominations are led by Netflix’s “The Irishman,” with 14 nods. However, Martin Scorsese’s film came home empty-handed at the Golden Globes last Sunday. Netflix also leads on the television side, with six nominations for Ava DuVernay’s true-crime miniseries “When They See Us.”
