The “After” series has had a long journey. Starting as a One Direction Harry Styles fan fiction published on Wattpad by Anna Todd, the story was later reformatted to become an original novel series detailing the tumultuous relationship between college student Tessa Young and tortured bad boy Hardin Scott. Five years after the novel was published, the first book was turned into the film “After” starring Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Tessa and Hardin.
Since 2019 there have been four installments in the “After” movie series with one coming out consistently every year.
The story started as a college romance but over the course of the films, Tessa and Hardin’s relationship has undergone a series of dramatic changes. The first film connected the two over their love of literature and saw Tessa opening herself up to try and make a relationship with Hardin work. “After We Collided” introduced...

If you're not ready to say goodbye to Hardin (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) and Tessa (Josephine Langford) just yet, don't worry, you won't have to - well beyond "After Ever Happy"'s upcoming release. Tiffin just revealed in an August Instagram video that a fifth film is coming. Fans had previously thought the fourth film, out Sept. 7, was Tiffin and Langford's final contributions to the saga.
Said Tiffin, "We have just wrapped filming on the fifth after movie. I can't tell you too much about it yet but I can tell you that it will be called 'After Everything,' and I cannot wait for you all to see it."
Of course, there were already even more "After" movies in the works. Back in April 2021, director Castille Landon exclusively confirmed to Teen Vogue that the "After" franchise would be getting even bigger with two more films on the way,...

The Scene 2 Seen podcast is finishing off the week strong!
This week I’ve already published conversations with spectacular talents such as Michael Greyeyes, Naturi Naughton and Juliette Binoche. Today is no different as I chat with actress Mia Isaac and writer-actress-director Hannah Marks.
Isaac is a rising talent who starred in back-to-back films released in July. She made her feature film debut starring in Don’t Make Me Go for Amazon Studios. Directed by Hannah Marks, it follows a single father (John Cho) diagnosed with a potentially fatal brain tumor who takes his 16-year-old daughter, Wally (Isaac), on a road trip to meet her estranged mother.
Isaac then co-starred opposite Zoey Deutch and Dylan O’Brien in the Searchlight Pictures feature for Hulu, Not Okay. In the comedy satire written and directed by Quinn Shepard, Issacs plays Rowan, a young adult dedicated to societal change. Her next projects include a short film and a TV series.

When John Green's "Turtles All the Way Down" was released in 2017, the young-adult novel was an instant bestseller, topping the New York Times list. It stayed there for over a year, with the "The Fault in Our Stars" author announcing during that time that the movie was in development. The long-awaited adaptation was filmed in 2022, and director Hannah Marks teased the project just a little bit to Popsugar. "'Turtles All the Way Down' is an incredible book," she said while promoting her movie "Don't Make Me Go." "First and foremost, I love the book by John Green, and the movie really stays true to the book in so many ways. I think we really worked hard on making it a faithful adaptation."
She continued, "And beyond that, it's pretty cool that we have two teenage Latina leads in the movie, which hasn't been done very much before. And the...

Writer-director Hannah Marks, who got her start acting in projects like Accepted, Weeds, Necessary Roughness and Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, made her feature directorial debut with After Everything, which she also wrote. And she directed another film that she wrote, Mark, Mary & Some Other People, before she directed Don’t Make Me Go, which is currently streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video.
For Marks, directing a film she didn’t write was something she “really enjoyed.”
“It was a great experience, because I got to have an outside perspective on the material, and it was really fun to get to riff on the material that already existed,” Marks tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We did some improv and played around a bit because everyone was so collaborative that was involved.”
But that doesn’t mean making Don’t Make Me Go wasn’t without its challenges.

This review of “Don’t Make Me Go” was first published June 13, 2022, after its release in theaters.
Your enjoyment of the mostly half-baked road trip drama “Don’t Make Me Go” will probably depend on how you respond to its last-minute plot twist.
John Cho stars in and emotionally grounds this two-star tearjerker from director Hannah Marks (“After Everything”), which follows an insurance salesman who struggles to tell his teenage daughter that he’s got a malignant tumor when they travel cross-country to New Orleans for his college reunion.
Unfortunately, the movie’s unexpected plot twist violently re-directs its treacly uplift narrative for the sake of a Hail Mary conclusion that’s almost ridiculous enough to be campy fun. It’s not though, since the twist in question feels like a last-ditch effort to convince viewers that the movie’s otherwise plain story, credited to Vera Herbert (series writer on “This Is Us...

Chicago – Exceptional films that reflect honest relationships are rare, but the latest film “Don’t Make Me Go” – streaming on Prime Video on July 15th – accomplishes the father/daughter dynamic with authentic situations and emotions. John Cho and Mia Isaac portray that relationship, in a film directed by Hannah Marks.
John Cho is Max, a single father raising his 16-year-old daughter Wallace (Mia Isaac), a child from his failed marriage. When Max finds out he has a rare bone tumor, he takes Wallace on a road trip to meet her estranged mother. Winding from California to New Orleans, the pair face off during a series of incidences, including Wallace staying out all night with strangers in Texas. Despite all the travails, they begin to come to terms with the truth, including that mother reluctant to meet her daughter. It all ends up in a surprising conclusion, and changes all lives along the way.

Before she hit her sweet 16, Hannah Marks had already lined up an impressive array of acting credits for a rising young performer: an arc on “Weeds,” appearing as Justin Long’s little sis in comedy “Accepted,” and stints on series like “Ugly Betty,” “Criminal Minds,” and “Private Practice.” But what she really wanted to do was direct. And write. And keep acting, too. What she really wanted to do was everything.
As Marks rolls out her third directorial effort, the Amazon-backed coming-of-age dramedy “Don’t Make Me Go,” starring bonafide Internet Boyfriend John Cho and rising star Mia Isaac, the just-turned-29-year-old filmmaker is only continuing to grow as a creator, while building on the valuable stuff she learned as just a kiddo.
“Being an actor myself, and specifically a child actor, I do think it’s served me as a director,” Marks said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “I...

From its opening moments, Hannah Marks’ “Don’t Make Me Go” tries to put its audience at ease with a surprising promise: disappointment. “You’re not going to like the way this story ends, but I think you’re going to like this story,” young Wally Park (newbie Mia Isaac) tells us via voiceover. That may sound coy for a dramedy that doesn’t hide a heartbreaking truth at its center — a single father (John Cho) discovers he has a terminal disease and decides to take his daughter (Isaac) on a road trip before he, well, goes — but it cleverly announces that perhaps there’s something else beneath the surface of what appears to be a straightforward weepy.
Marks (and Isaac and Cho) will revisit Wally’s declaration and it will prove to be true: “Don’t Make Me Go” is Also true: Where this road trip movie ends its journey will...

There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.
Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

The power imbalance is there from the start: Mark (Ben Rosenfield) goes googly-eyed at the sight of his old college acquaintance Mary (Hayley Law), who is so busy fussing with her own dramas that she can’t quite place the guy at the convenience store who’s staring at her. It’s a re-meet-cute that sets off Hannah Marks’ sophomore directorial outing, “Mark, Mary & Some Other People,” as Mary not only remembers Mark, but soon ensnares him in said dramas, channeling that tricky power imbalance into something like actual intimacy. Ain’t love grand?
In Marks’ world it is, at least for a while. The actress and filmmaker’s first directorial outing, “After Everything,” similarly explored a young couple in the throes of both a big love and a big problem, and Marks’ love stories strike a delicate balance; they are always funny, but never at the cost of actual human empathy.

Few genres are as beholden to tropes than the romantic comedy, which has long traded in predictable patterns, both the good and the very bad (pitting so-called friends against each other in service to new relationships). The path to love never did run smooth, but too many love stories seem to delight in running over people on the way to eternal bliss. It’s a trope that’s been used as plot and as a dirty little garnish, always fortifying the most basic and bland of lessons: Romantic love is more important than anything else.
It’s a trope long due for a refresher. One way: jettison the emphasis on romantic love and lean into the value of friendship, a twist that’s been used to great effect in “Booksmart” and “For a Good Time, Call.” Both films placed a premium on the platonic Bff-ships and use the rom-com structure...

In the burn bright and fade away world of memes, you might have forgotten all about the sizeable backlash spawned a couple years back by The Modern Man article, “How To Talk To A Woman Wearing Headphones.” The step-by-step pickup guide quickly earned derision for its assumption that a woman wearing headphones is single, straight, and just waiting around for a random dude to validate her attractiveness and ask her out on a date. So, it’s a bit strange that in writing/directing team Hannah Marks’ and Joey Power’s “After Everything” the meet-cute that’s supposed to form the foundation of the romance that drives the rest of the picture essentially plays out that scenario.

Ever since they made their relationship red carpet official at the season two premiere of Netflix's Stranger Things last October, Joe Keery and Maika Monroe have continued to inspire major couple goals (and major hair goals) together. The Stranger Things actor and Tau actress - did you catch that Netflix movie over the Summer? - keep their relationship on the down-low on social media, but you can still spot them sharing some supersweet exchanges on the red carpet. The duo will appear in the movie After Everything together next month, but until then, these lovey-dovey couple pictures will have to suffice.

"I just want us to be on the same team" Good Deed Ent. has released an official trailer for an indie dramedy titled After Everything, which first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. The film is about two people who fall in love, Mia and Elliot, but must deal with the challenges of life when Elliot is diagnosed with cancer. Maika Monroe and Jeremy Allen White star as the couple, and the cast includes Marisa Tomei, Gina Gershon, Olivia Luccardi, Dean Winters, Joe Keery, and Sasha Lane. This looks like an emotional, enriching story of love, and how it keeps these two together and happy even against all odds. I like that this has comedy and angst, and isn't a sad drama, because this kind of story needs levity. Here's the trailer (+ poster) for Hannah Marks & Joey Power's After Everything, in high def on Apple:...
