It was pretty much inevitable that we’d get a movie like The Apocalypse Box at some point this year. With a contentious election and political rioting in both France and the UK, where the film is from, and a divisive vote just a few months away in the US, someone was going to make a politically themed horror film. And that someone is writer/director James Eaves.

Veteran hard-rock act Extreme have announced their first new studio album in 15 years. The band’s sixth LP overall is appropriately titled Six, and features the just-released raw rocker “Rise” as the first single.
Extreme — featuring Gary Cherone (vocals), Nuno Bettencourt (guitar), Pat Badger (bass), and Kevin Figueiredo (drums) — will release Six on June 9th via earMUSIC.
“Musically, it’s aggressive,” Cherone stated of “Rise.” “Lyrically, it’s a cautionary tale on the rise and fall of fame. You get seduced into it. Once you’re on top, they’ll rip you apart and tear you down. That’s the nature of the beast.”
“When Eddie Van Halen passed, it really hit me,” Bettencourt added. “I’m not going to be the one who will take the throne, but I felt some responsibility to keep guitar playing alive. So, you hear a lot of fire on the record.”

In 1963, Bob Dylan’s second album, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, brought the young artist national attention, particularly for his protest songs. On several subsequent albums, Dylan tackled subjects such as racial injustice and the Cold War. While he moved away from protest songs by the mid-1960s, just several years into his career, he returned to them on occasion. Dylan himself said he doesn’t consider himself a protest singer, but he made an indelible impact on the genre. Here are five of his best protest songs.
Bob Dylan | Val Wilmer/Redferns 5. ‘The Times They Are A-Changin”
Dylan moved to New York City in 1961, 19 years old and determined to meet his idol, Woody Guthrie. “The Times They Are A-Changin'” is evocative of Guthrie’s work to great effect. Dylan released the song in 1964, at a time of rumbling social change, and he concisely spoke to the era.

GÖTEBORG, Sweden – Jan Troell, the 91-year-old Swedish director and 1972 Oscar nominee for “The Emigrants,” is giving interviews in a Göteborg hotel, his leg propped on a chair, a walking stick, his daughter, Johanna, and wife, Agneta, both collaborators on his films, by his side.
The director, who turned down a ten-year Warner Bros. contract to return to Sweden, has been awarded the 2023 Goteborg Festival’s Nordic Honorary Dragon Award. The prize reflects a life-long connection to still-and-moving images that began when his mother brought him home from the hospital and his dad began filming.
Some of that footage, as well as excerpts from his films, will be combined with new dramatic scenes, for a new film project “Dyning” which is a memoir.
“I’m enjoying editing ‘Dyning’,” said Troell, adding. “I don’t totally identify with my age. I do physically but I still have the same lust for making pictures and images,...

Bob Dylan has been a successful musician for decades. He rose to fame in the early 1960s and has won multiple Grammys and even a Nobel Prize. His songwriting talent helped him on his rise to fame, but he said he has had to maintain a specific type of personality too. In order to be successful, Dylan said he had to be reclusive and unfriendly.

Imagine the experience of being one of the first individuals to see Lin-Manuel Miranda’s now-classic Hamilton: An American Musical live.
The first thing you notice is the spartan, largely empty stage. Then as Leslie Odom Jr. takes the stage as Aaron Burr followed by Miranda’s Hamilton, you realize that this production about America’s founding fathers is made up almost exclusively of People of Color. That’s a lot to take in from the start. At a certain point, however, you’re bound to realize that the play is about 40 minutes in and The. Music. Has. Not. Stopped.
In addition to its many ingenious quirks and hooks, Hamilton is truly a musical musical. Miranda’s book and lyrics about one of the country’s most colorful and impressive founders has a lot of ground to cover. And it does so at a musical sprint with almost no expository time-wasting in-between.

This is actually his second straight attempt at the title after losing the award in 2017 to Jon Pardi, but this time he has something he didn’t have then: an additional nomination for Male Vocalist of the Year. Will that make all the difference?
Earning a nom for Male Vocalist is no mean feat. In that race Combs is up against Entertainer of the Year contenders Chris Stapleton and Keith Urban, and he actually made the cut over three other Entertainer nominees: Kenny Chesney, Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean, who were all snubbed from the Male Vocalist race. That may indicate strong overall support for Combs from the association.

Breakout star Luke Combs has already proven his knack for clever country wordplay, scoring Number One hits with singles like “Hurricane” — which compared seeing an ex to being struck by a coastal storm. But with his deep album cut “I Got Away With You,” the North Carolina native takes his lyricism to the next level.
Delivering the song in acoustic solo style for this new performance video, Combs puts the focus squarely on a set of lyrics that work like a romantic head fake. He’s gotten caught red-handed a time or two,...

Mining Bob Dylan’s unrivaled songbook – even if he’d never written a tune beyond the 20 or so included in Off Broadway’s Girl From The North Country, his contribution to popular music would be assured – and wandering his spiritual map of a mythic Americana that conforms to no historical boundaries but feels undeniably true to the bone, Conor McPherson’s radiant musical is as eccentric and unclassifiable as any fellow traveler of Dylan should be.
A remarkable piece of theater that made its London premiere last year, Girl opens tonight at the Public Theater with an impeccable cast including Mare Winningham and Stephen Bogardus. At times so lovely – as when a pair of young, broken-up lovers duet on a newly mournful version of the once sprightly I Want You – Girl might have you wishing for some sort of theatrical replay mechanism.

They may hail from the distinct worlds of country and R&B music, but Luke Combs and Leon Bridges’ voices sure do pair well together. The two singers shared the stage earlier this year for an episode of Cmt Crossroads, and now you hear live versions of them teaming up on Combs’ “Beautiful Crazy” and Bridges’ “Beyond.”

Luke Combs knows his way around a heartbreak ballad, but at least the bottle’s never let him down. So goes the theme of the North Carolina native’s first-ever headlining arena jaunt, the Beer Never Broke My Heart Tour, set to kick off in 2019 with Lanco and Jameson Rodgers supporting. Combs announced the tour on social media this morning and also previewed the run with Storme Warren on SiriusXM’s the Highway.

Over the years, bit by bit, lesser-known heroic stories of the brave men and women that fought in battle during World War II have come to light via cinema. The latest in a line of intriguing films, Hurricane, tells the story of the Polish fliers who found themselves fighting for the freedom of their own country in foreign skies for Britain’s own Raf.
Coming from The Messenger director David Blair – and also marks the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force – the film stars Game of Thrones’ Iwan Rhoen, Hacksaw Ridge’s Milo Gibson, Prime Suspect 1973’s Stefanie Martini and Under the Skin’s Krystof Hadek.
Seen through the eyes of Jan Zumbach (Rheon), fighter ace and adventurer, it tells how the Poles, driven across Europe by the German war machine, finally made their last stand. Flying Hurricanes for the Raf over Britain, they became a key component in...

“We’re not gonna die out here.” Coming off one of the most ruthless hurricane seasons in memory, here is the new trailer for Adrift, the survival-at-sea drama starring Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin from director Baltasar Kormákur. Landlubbers who blanch at the thought of facing a wave the size of an office building might want to look elsewhere.
The based-on-a-true-story logline: As free-spirited sailors Tami Oldham (Woodley) and Richard Sharp (Claflin) set out on a journey across the ocean, they couldn’t anticipate that they would be sailing directly into one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history. In the aftermath of the storm, Tami awakens to find Richard badly injured and their boat in ruins. With no hope for rescue, Tami must find the strength and determination to save herself and the only man she has ever loved.

The streamer is on a mission to crunch release windows and the first project it has invested in is “Hurricane.” The World War II action thriller has “Game of Thrones” star Iwan Rheon, and Milo Gibson, who starred in “Hacksaw Ridge.” It will launch on Rakuten TV and in movie theaters in the U.K. on the same date in September.

She's been a Grammy nominee and a disco glamazon, a supermodel and a slave to the rhythm, a Bond femme fatale and Conan the Barbarian's cohort, a style icon and a Studio 54 habitué. She is Grace Jones, and this tall, fearsome Jamaican remains an instantly recognizable celebrity and a fertile creative force. But director Sophie Fiennes' immersive and intimate documentary, Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami, reveals a side of the artist rarely glimpsed by her legions of fans: unguarded, tender, down-home, vulnerable. Rather than follow the standard cradle-to-comeback trajectory of a music biodoc,...

Documentaries about musicians can feel like a dime a dozen. It’s no wonder, too, since they’re such easy sells for festivals and home entertainment in a market that is over-saturated with exhibitors and distributors in need to properties that don’t require elaborate marketing campaigns -- just a hope and a prayer that they will ‘catch on’.
Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami is not exactly one of those films. It is unconventional as rock docs go in a whole host of ways, but it’s also a film that even its subject’s fans may struggle with. It eschews a typical birth-to-death narrative and instead focuses on Grace’s experiences in Jamaica and Paris recording her 2008 album Hurricane, recorded in garish lo-fi digital video, juxtaposed against richly filmed concert footage that echoes her 1982 One Man Show. It’s a documentary that leaves questions – like...

Just two years after it was cancelled by Fox, “American Idol” returns to ABC on March 11. When this reality competition series hit the airwaves back in 2002, it was a ratings smash, and many of its early winners enjoyed huge success. Indeed, its first-ever champ, Kelly Clarkson, has won three Grammys and parlayed her fame into a string of hit records and a new gig as a judge on the competition, NBC’s’ “The Voice.”
However, many of the more recent music newcomers to be named “American Idol” have found that their time in the spotlight is fleeting. In the photo gallery above, we take a look back at the first 15 “American Idol” winners to date and see how many have been lucky so far and which have been jinxed.
