Of all the major Primetime Emmy categories, the competition program field has been the most in need of a shakeup. This is a not-so-amazing race that rarely changes — although this year, ironically, “The Amazing Race” won’t be a part of it.
For the first time since the category launched in 2003, “The Amazing Race” — which won the competition series Emmy 10 times — won’t be among the nominees, as it didn’t air during the eligibility period. That will open the door for at least one new nominee — and maybe more, given the recent TV Academy rule that allows up to eight slots depending on how many programs are submitted.
Turnover in the competition race has moved at a glacial pace. Last year, Netflix’s “Nailed It” entered the category, displacing “Project Runway,” but in 2018, the five nominees were the same as 2017. And then there’s the fact that only four...

Netflix dominated this year’s Critics Choice Real TV Awards, thanks in part to “Cheer” and “Queer Eye,” which led the winners list with two kudos each.
“Cheer” was named best unstructured series, as well as male star of the year for Jerry Harris, while “Queer Eye” landed wins for lifestyle: fashion/beauty show and ensemble cast in a scripted series.
Overall, Netflix won eight awards, also picking up trophies for “Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich” (crime/justice series), “Somebody Feed Phil” (travel/adventure series), “Love Is Blind” (relationship show), as well as the peer-voted award for outstanding achievement in nonfiction programming by a network or streaming platform.
Other networks with multiple wins were ABC and Bravo, with two each. “Survivor” host and executive producer Jeff Probst was awarded this year’s Critics Choice Real TV Impact Award, “for his ongoing contributions to the unscripted television industry.”

Univision was first in ratings with a 0.5 rating/3 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and fourth in total viewers with an average of 1.7 million, according to preliminary numbers. The CW has reason to pop bottles, sort of, this morning. Its “Happy Hour” rose from a horrific 0.0 rating last week to a 0.1 rating last night. (The show still got a 0 share.)
That’s not *good* — but it’s a heck of a lot better than a full-on goose egg. The CW still finished dead last in broadcast’s primetime.
“Happy Hour” is a series of stand-up comedy specials.

With Songland, executive producer Audrey Morrissey aimed to create a series that would take viewers deeper into the creative process involved with music, representing a new chapter for music in television.
For the four-time Emmy winner, the seeds of the songwriting competition series were planted while working on NBC’s The Voice. “My entire career has been in music and television, but once I ended up at The Voice, for the first time in my career, I had an up-close, ringside seat to massive international artists talking about material, and I realized how the material was everything,” Morrissey says. “Not to minimize vocalists, but a great song is what all artists are looking for.”
It was around this time that Morrissey met Dave Stewart—a Grammy winner known for his ’80s pop duo Eurythmics—whose appreciation of songwriters matched her own. “Being a very famous writer-producer himself, he said, ‘I...

After its no so greatest debut ever, “The Bachelor: The Greatest Seasons — Ever!” came in even with its second episode, as NBC won the night overall.
“The Bachelor” highlights shows scored a 0.4 rating among adults 18-49 and drew 2.2 million total viewers, down a fraction from the 2.4 million viewers who tuned in for the premiere last week. Its numbers continue to aline more closely with another “Bachelor” spinoff series “Listen to Your Heart,” which averaged a 0.6 rating and 2.8 million viewers throughout its run.
NBC’s unscripted lineup lost a little bit of steam from last week, but still topped the night. “Titan Games” led the way with a 0.7 rating and 3.8 million viewers, down from a 0.8 rating last time around. “The Wall” also ticked down from a 0.7 rating to a 0.6, drawing 3.8 million viewers in the process. “Songland” came in even at a 0.5 rating and 2.5 million viewers.

Once again, The Titan Games ruled the Monday night ratings, delivering a 0.7 in the adults 18-49 demographic and 3.80 million viewers. The extreme reality athletic competition may have dipped a tenth from last week, but it was still enough to stay on top.
NBC also aired a fresh episode of Songland, which held steady. Meanwhile, The Wall (0.6, 3.77M) ticked down from last week. The trio gave the network the No. 1 spot overall in the demo for the night.
ABC’s latest walk down memory lane with The Bachelor: The Greatest Seasons – Ever! managed to stay on par with last week. The CW aired repeats of Whose Line Is It Anyway? followed by the season finale of Roswell, New Mexico (0.1, 658,000), which held steady.

“The Bachelor: The Greatest Seasons – Ever!” drew even less grand a crowd last night than it did in the prior Monday’s debut. The latest “Bachelor” spinoff stayed steady in ratings among adults 18-49, but that 0.4 demo number is nothing to celebrate in the Fantasy Suite.

With the season two finale of NBC’s “Songland” just hours away, hitmaker and star mentor Ester Dean is not ready to say goodbye to her Monday night showcase. “I want to do more TV,” she says. “I love TV, and if TV coincides with my songwriting, I don’t have to give up one kid for the others. So I would love to do more. I want to be Oprah. At the end of the day, that’s my goal. … I mean, Kelly Clarkson is doing exactly how I want to do it. She’s amazing.””
Needless to say, Dean would be ecstatic if “Songland,” the show which co-stars Ryan Tedder and Shane McAnally as a panel of songwriters, mentors and producers there to find the best undiscovered writing talents, were picked up for a third season. After charting several No. 1 hits on iTunes, clearly people are listening, and artists like Luis Fonsi,...

The Titan Games topped another pre-summer Monday last night, holding steady at a 0.8 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 3.90 million viewers. The extreme American Gladiators-adjacent athletic reality competition was followed on the network by The Wall and Songland which both ticked down a tenth in the demo with their new episodes. The trio led NBC to the nightly victory in that metric.
ABC’s programming real estate was occupied by the debut of The Bachelor: The Greatest Seasons – Ever!. Based on ratings standards delivered by The Bachelor franchise, the numbers are quite low for the kickoff of the 10-episode retrospective.
The CW followed a Whose Line Is It Anyway? repeat with a fresh episode of Roswell, New Mexico, which dropped in the demo.
CBS aired repeats of The Neighborhood, Bob Hearts Abishola, All Rise and Bull, which led the network to an overall victory in total viewers.

ABC aired the first part of its summer stroll down Bachelor Nation memory lane, however, a much smaller audience than is usual for “The Bachelor” tuned in to watch.
The premiere of “The Bachelor: The Greatest Seasons — Ever!” scored a 0.4 rating among adults 18-49 and drew 2.4 million total viewers. Compared with the lowest scored of the most recent season of “The Bachelor” (a 1.3 rating and 5.1 million viewers), those numbers don’t look so good, but they do aline more closely with the other “Bachelor” spinoff series “Listen to Your Heart,” which averaged a 0.6 rating and 2.8 million viewers throughout its run. VH1’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and Netflix’s “Cheer” led all shows in nominations for the second annual Critics Choice Real TV Awards, the Critics Choice Organization and the nonfiction producers organization Npact announced on Monday.
But while 89 different shows were nominated, and nonfiction series nominees included “The Last Dance,” “Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children,” “The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez” and “Hillary,” the year’s biggest nonfiction sensation, “Tiger King,” was not nominated for anything despite being eligible.
The awards, which were launched last year, honor nonfiction, unscripted and reality programming as chosen by television journalists in the Critics Choice Organization.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” and “Cheer” each landed five nominations in the 25 categories. “Queer Eye” received four and “Couples Therapy” three, with almost two dozen other shows, ranging from “A Very Brady Renovation” to “Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich,” receiving two.

ABC aired a two-part season finale of its freshman romantic dramedy The Baker and the Beauty on Monday, which delivered a 0.6 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic for the first hour and 3.01 million viewers. If that holds after adjustments due to preemptions, it could mark a series high.
The second half earned a 0.5 in the demo and 2.62 million viewers, an uptick from last week and steady with its season premiere.
NBC aired a new episode of The Titan Games, which was up in the demo from last week’s season premiere. A fresh episode of The Wall afterward marked its best numbers since February 2018. Both shows topped Monday night for NBC, which also saw Songland tick up in the demo from last week.
The CW spotlighted a seminal rap group in Iconic: TLC and served a fresh episode of Roswell, New Mexico, which climbed a tenth in the demo.

The writers of ABC’s “The Baker and the Beauty” clearly put enough yeast in the finale two episodes of season 1.
On Monday night, the show’s back-to-back finale rose to a season high rating and total viewership tally. The first episode scored a 0.6 rating and 3 million total viewers, the second a 0.5 and 2.6 million. ABC has yet to make a decision no whether it will bake a second loaf of “Baker and the Beauty.” Earlier in the night, a “Celebrity Family Feud” replay scored a 0.8 and 5.1 million viewers.
NBC lineup of game shows all ticked up from their previous episodes, with Dwayne Johnson’s “Titan Games” rising from its season debut to a 0.8 rating and 4.2 million viewers. “The Wall” grew a whopping 167% from a 0.3 rating last week to a 0.8 this time around. The show also doubled its viewership to end up with around 4 million pairs of eyeballs. “Songland” grew from...

The Rock just cooked up a better Week 2 than Week 1 in the Season 2 Nielsen ratings for his “Titan Games.” To be fair (and clear), the Dwayne Johnson-hosted NBC competition series premiered its second season on Memorial Day.
NBC was first in ratings with a 0.7 rating/4 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 3.63 million, according to preliminary numbers. At 8 p.m., “Titan Games” drew a 0.8/5 and 4.2 million viewers. “The Wall” at 9 p.m. had a 0.8/4 and 4 million viewers. “Songland” at 10 p.m. got a 0.6/3 and 2.7 million viewers.
ABC and Fox tied for second in ratings, both with a 0.6/3. ABC was third in total viewers with 3.58 million, Fox was fourth with 2.9 million.

Exclusive: British TV and radio host Richard Bacon is continuing his segue into production with an overall deal with Universal Television Alternative Studio and Universal Television.
Bacon will develop and produce non-scripted shows for the World of Dance and The Wall studio. He is already in development with a couple of projects with the company.
This comes after he created The Hustler, a mystery-based gameshow that was handed a series order by ABC last year. The show, which is hosted by Craig Ferguson, is produced by All3Media’s Studio Lambert, the company behind Undercover Boss and The Circle.
Bacon is a well-known figure in the UK, where he used to host BBC kids’ series Blue Peter as well as The Big Breakfast and presented on BBC radio.

Memorial Day was quiet…very quiet. The networks were filled with reruns and repeats save a small handful of fresh episodes. NBC did air the two-hour Season 2 premiere of The Titan Games, which delivered a 0.7 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 3.42 million viewers. Both metrics were down from last season’s averages and marked a series low.
Titan Games was followed by a new episode of Songland (0.5, 2.34M), which stumbled two-tenths from last week, also hitting a series low. NBC won the night overall in the demo.
ABC gave audiences a new episode of the freshman romantic dramedy The Baker and the Beauty, matching last week. Other than that, ABC served a double helping of Celebrity Family Feud repeats.
Not much to report at CBS. They aired a lineup of repeats of The Neighborhood, Bob Hearts Abishola, All Rise and Bull. It was the same story for Fox,...
