The Rise of Reality TV: How It Took Over Our Screens - Main Image
People's initial impression of reality TV is not all that different from current times. While a lot of people have learned to embrace the genre, others still refuse to accept it as a form of entertainment. This article highlights the rise of Reality TV and how it eventually took over our screens.
The Rise of Reality TV: Where It All Began

Contrary to John Cleese’s baffling suggestion that Monty Python’s Flying Circus was somehow banned, the show has been widely available on Netflix since 2018. The popular streamer has also been the home of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Monty Python’s Life of Brian and various other Python specials and documentaries. Oh, and Eric Idle’s bizarre faux radio play What About Dick?
But all that is about to change.
The entire Python catalog will disappear from Netflix on November 1st, meaning that a lot of folks may be spending Halloween night binging 50-year-old comedy sketches. This marks the end of the much-publicized association between Netflix and the Pythons, which not every member of the group has been super-happy about.

"Saturday Night Live" has been going on for 50 seasons now, so they've had their fair share of bad hosts. Sometimes the host is simply not that comfortable with live acting -- looking at you, January Jones or Jacob Elordi -- and sometimes the host has the bad luck of getting a cold at the worst possible moment, like what seemingly happened to poor Jean Smart in the season 50 premiere. Other times the host is bad because, well, they're just kind of a bad person.
Case in point: Steven Seagal, who hosted in April 1991 and helped deliver an episode so terrible that it got him banned from the show forever. Over three decades later, most "SNL" fans are happy to just pretend the episode never happened, because ite was a trainwreck in a way that wasn't even that fun or interesting.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (Warner Bros.) had an unexpectedly strong second weekend. With just under $52 million, it fell 54 percent (quite decent from a $111 million start), and a domestic total of $188 million in just 10 days.
Its take made up just over half of the U.S./Canada estimated gross of $95 million. That’s up 50 percent from last year, with year to date totals now 12 percent below last year.
The “Beetlejuice” 36 years-later sequel now looks certain to top the original film’s grosses, adjusted to current ticket prices. “Twisters” (Universal), released earlier this summer, was a similar legacy project, though with a different cast. As big as it was ($266 million domestic so far), that’s about half of the adjusted total for the 1996 original.
“Beetlejuice,” however, is faring similarly to “Twisters” overseas. With the film open around most of the world, its foreign take so far is only $76 million, a smaller gross compared to domestic.

Reality TV started with hidden camera shows in the 1940s. It evolved into a pursuit of the American family in the 60s. The reality TV genre is constantly evolving. Streaming services are entering the game, giving more creative control to producers. Pioneering reality TV shows like Candid Camera and An American Family laid the groundwork for popular modern shows like Survivor and The Bachelor.
Reality television exploded in the early 2000s with franchises like The Bachelor, Big Brother, and Survivor, and it wasn't long before fame and fortune took on a greater focus with The Real Housewives series and Keeping Up with the Kardashians. But, before all that, hit reality TV shows had quite a fascinating history in the twentieth century with the first reality TV shows. The genre began far earlier than people might realize, and it started with the hidden camera style, then moved into the pursuit of the real American family.

Billy the Exterminator's sunglasses had a practical purpose against the camera lights. Billy may have been married in the '80s, but remains guarded about his personal life. The show was redirected to focus more on extermination and less on family drama.
After his breakthrough exposure on a few episodes of the reality series Dirty Jobs, A&e approached Billy the Exterminator to have a show of his own. Initially called The Exterminators — a strangely generic name given that Billy himself is the obvious star attraction — producers changed the title to the more fitting Billy the Exterminator following the first season. Like any compelling reality show, Billy the Exterminator isn't just about its lead character but the people around him, in this case, his colleagues.

Yes, Jake Szymanski has directed episodes of Saturday Night Live, and yes, he has an improv background. But even those experiences didn’t fully prepare him to direct Jury Duty. Nothing could.
Amazon Freevee’s comedy, which follows a regular guy who doesn’t realize he’s part of a fake jury trial, might have its roots in hoax shows like Candid Camera and Punk’d, but its scope is even more audacious. For three weeks of filming, Ronald Gladden, the juror who was hoaxed, was fully immersed in the show. He was sequestered with fake jurors, and he even surrendered his phone so that he couldn’t contact the outside world. That meant the creative team had to build a full-time fictional environment. Szymanski wasn’t just directing a few scenes. He was directing Ronald’s entire life.

Exclusive: Shout! Factory has snapped up North American distribution rights to Candid Camera, the hidden-camera show known for its decades-long run as a television pioneer.
The multi-year agreement encompasses thousands of episodes from 1960 to 2013, with the first 100 hand-picked classics heading to streaming service Shout! Factory TV later this year. Shout will have exclusive digital and broadcast rights to the series in the U.S. and Canada, and the company has pledged to announce more plans soon.
Candid Camera premiered in 1948, during the infancy of television as a medium, and went on to produce episodes for CBS, ABC, NBC, HBO and TV Land. Its run on CBS, from 1960 to 1967, was perhaps its most indelible. It introduced the hidden camera concept to television, and creator, producer and host Allen Funt has frequently been called the inventor of reality TV. The show’s payoff included one of TV’s most enduring taglines: “Smile,...

Maybe — hopefully — you’ve seen Jackass Forever in a crowded theater over the past week, laughing your ass off, tears running down your cheeks and onto your N95 mask. Next-gen jackasses Zack Hoffman and Rachel Wolfson are pretending to be a maintenance worker and Irving’s granddaughter, respectively. “Ted Lasso,” “The Mandalorian,” “Hacks,” “The Flight Attendant,” “The Crown” and “The Queen’s Gambit” are among the top nominees for the 73rd annual Primetime Awards, which are set for Sept.19 on CBS with Cedric the Entertainer, who stars on the network’s sitcom “The Neighborhood,” set to host. Phyllis George, one of the first leading female sports broadcasters, died on Friday due to complications from a blood disorder. She was 70.
George’s career in front of the camera began in 1974 as the co-host of “Candid Camera” on CBS. That same year, she then joined the “NFL Today” team alongside veteran sports braodcasters Brent Musburger, Irv Cross and Jimmy the Greek. With the team, she hosted pre-game discussions and analysis before National Football League games.
She was one of the first women to be a major player in the sports TV world. She also helped cover horse races, like the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.
In 1978, George became the host of People magazine’s self-titled entertainment show. She then went on to co-anchor the CBS Morning news and interviewed many noteworthy guests, including former First Lady Nancy Reagan.
George won the Miss America beauty pageant in 1971, and before that she was crowned Miss Texas.

What We Do in the Shadows Season 2 Episode 3
What We Do in the Shadows Season 2, Episode 3, “Brain Scramblies,” observes a sacred event. The vampires of Staten Island are invited to the venerable celebration of the Superb Owl. Conspiracy theorists might think they recognize this from reports of the billionaire parties at Bohemian Grove, where a statue of such a wondrous bird guards with the warning “Weaving Spiders come not here.” Spiders drink blood just like vampires, so you can imagine the honor of getting such a coveted invitation.

Do you still shudder at the thought of hearing “The Weakest Link” host Anne Robinson say: “You are the weakest link… Goodbye”? If so, Netflix has another seriously twisted British reality show for you. It’s called “The Push,” and it sounds like the most messed up reality show since “Survivor” (or maybe that crazy Russian one that allowed murder). Arriving stateside via Netflix later this month, “The Push” is a social experiment show led by “psychological illusionist” Derren Brown. Using actors and elaborate scenarios, Brown tests the moral mettle of poor unsuspecting contestants by trying to manipulate them into committing murder.
Per the official synopsis: “Brown exposes the psychological secrets of obedience and social compliance. He expertly lifts the lid on the terrifying truth that, when confronted with authority, our natural instinct is to unflinchingly obey without question – to such an extent that even the most moral people can...

Don’t worry, Supergirl fans, you’re not losing your collective minds.
Though Monday’s installment of the CBS drama seems to take a giant step backwards, storytelling-wise, it’s merely the result of last week’s decision to swap “How Does She Do It?” with “Livewire” in the wake of terrorist attacks in Paris.
So let’s all pretend, for the next few paragraphs, that we don’t already know James and Lucy are going to rekindle their relationship, or that Hank is up to some funny business at the Deo, or that Cat will eventually take a liking…...

"Candid Camera" debuted 67 years ago this August, and though the show is no longer on the air, it lives on in an avalanche of copycats, having created a winning template that's still used to this day. Producers create scenarios, and hidden cameras capture reactions to those absurd situations from unsuspecting people. Later, the cameras are revealed to the marks, often by revealing the show's title or tagline — though often you can see people thinking something like, I have never heard of that show in my life. What follows is an overview of the the reality format that keeps finding new life —or new lows — on various networks and with various twists. But it all shares the same DNA.

David Spade is finally making an attempt to return to TV. Fameless is his next project with TruTV which will be a mix of Punked and Candid Camera. The show will be a reality prank show that will feature guests who believe they will be on a different game/reality show. However, a sketch will be written around them and shock the poor souls before they are informed that they were pranked. Each season will have 8 episodes, but we have no time line when the first season starts up.
I love that David is taking a risk. It will be interesting to see how they will pull this off Hopefully his network will be giving them a decent budget to work with to make the show better. It seems like his idea will be fun, so as long as TruTV backs it enough-i think David Spade has a legit chance at a comeback.

Apparently flying high on its very first pair of Golden Globe wins, thanks to original series Transparent, emerging television force Amazon has announced that it has hired on a sizable name to helm yet another new series: Woody Allen. The new project will mark the writer and director’s first journey to small-screen creation – though, in his early years, Allen did write for shows like Stanley and Candid Camera – and although the news that Allen is set to work in a new medium is interesting, it comes with a caveat. Namely, that Woody Allen has no idea what the hell his new show is going to be about. The Untitled Woody Allen Project (Or Whatever The Good Goddamn We Feel Like Calling It) has already earned itself a full series order from Amazon, but neither Allen nor his new network have any clue whatsoever what the series will be about.
