Smoking was allowed on designated London Underground train cars until 1984. It was banned completely in the Underground in 1987 after the Kings Cross Station fire that killed 31 and injured about 100 people.
The original Broadway production of "Butley" written by Simon Gray opened at the Morosco Theater in New York City on October 31, 1972, ran for 135 performances, and was nominated for the 1973 Tony Award for the Best Play. Sir Alan Bates re-created his 1973 Tony Award-winning performance Best Actor in Play in this filmed production based on the Simon Gray play and screenplay.
This is the only film in the American Film Theater series to have an R rating from the MPAA.
