As huge as Cher is behind the mic, she also had one hell of a movie career, even earning two Oscar nominations and a win. Cher was surprisingly talented on the screen but she also had several big-time directors supporting her like Robert Altman, Mike Nichols and George Miller. Of course, as with any actress, Cher ran into some real jerks on the set…and she’s not afraid to name names.
As far as who made Cher want to turn back time and reconsider which contracts she signed, she cited two in particular: “There are only two directors I didn’t like: Peter Bogdanovich and the guy from The Muppets,” referring to Frank Oz. “I actually got the guy from The Muppets fired. I said, ‘Either you’re going or I’m going,’ which is a shame because he’s a really good director, but he had a thing about me.

Cher has some choice words to describe a director with whom she previously worked.
In a sprawling interview with The Times of London, timed to the first-half release of her two-part memoir, she opened up about her childhood and career, including an acrimonious experience filming 1985’s biographical drama Mask with helmer Peter Bogdanovich.
“There are only two directors I didn’t like: Peter Bogdanovich and the guy from The Muppets [Frank Oz, with whom she worked on 1990’s Mermaids]. I actually got the guy from The Muppets fired. I said, either you’re going or I’m going, which is a shame because he’s a really good director, but he had a thing about me. He would go, ‘At least my wife loves me!’”

Cher is looking back on the two directors she didn’t like working with.
In an interview with the U.K.’s Times published Friday timed to the release of the first of her two-part memoir, the singer discussed her acting career and the difficulty of working with two filmmakers in particular.
“There are only two directors I didn’t like: Peter Bogdanovich and the guy from The Muppets,” she said as she reflected on clashing with Bogdanovich on 1985’s Mask and with Frank Oz on 1990’s Mermaids. “I actually got the guy from The Muppets fired. Cher may have won Best Actress at Cannes for her performance in Peter Bogdanovich’s 1985 feature “Mask,” but that didn’t mean she enjoyed working with the director.
Cher, who is revisiting her life, legacy, and career in memoir “Cher: The Memoir Part 1,” told The Times that Bogdanovich was an “asshole” to work with. “There are only two directors I didn’t like: Peter Bogdanovich and the guy from ‘The Muppets,’” Cher said, referencing “Mermaids” director Frank Oz.
For Bogdanovich, Cher detailed his sexist remarks on set. “He was an asshole,” Cher said. “He was not nice to the girls in the film and he was so fucking arrogant. I really, really disliked him.”
According to Cher, one tense moment on set included Bogdanovich asking her for her opinion on a scene, and then later chastising her for sharing her perspective. “[Bogdanovich] comes in and says, ‘Cher, where do you think we should film this scene?...

Cher did not hold back during an interview with The Times while promoting her new memoir, “Cher: The Memoir Part 1.” The icon was reflecting on her Oscar-winning movie career when she revealed: “There are only two directors I didn’t like: Peter Bogdanovich and the guy from ‘The Muppets.'” She worked with the former on 1985’s “Mask,” for which she won best actress at Cannes, and the latter was Frank Oz, who directed her on 1990’s “Mermaids.”

Image Source: HarperCollins For some pop music fans, there was a milestone reached in September, though it didn’t receive widespread attention: It was 60 years since the release of the very first Sonny & Cher single, Baby Don’t Go. Since then, Cher has been a fixture in American pop culture, with an Oscar, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, and a résumé that includes a dozen Top 10 singles and more than a dozen high-profile movies, including Moonstruck, Mask, The Witches of Eastwick, and Mermaids. Now, she’s written a book about her life and her illustrious career. Well, it’s actually two books, with the first out now and the second arriving next year. Cher: The Memoir, Part One covers her formative years; over the course of her career, we’ve spoken to her over the years, and she once recounted a memorable moment that helped inspire her to pursue a career on stage.

Filmmaking can be a pitiless business, particularly for actors. While it's true all creatives are being judged on their personal attributes, performers face the added pressure of having to embody the physical and emotional attributes necessary to play a given part. This means they're being hired or rejected based on their very appearance and essence as a human being. This is rough for anyone, but especially brutal for young actors who are in the midst of puberty or just on the other side of it. Furthermore, it can be rough on the folks behind the camera; an actor still getting comfortable within their growing body might dazzle in an interview, but once you get them on set, they're just not right for the part. Just ask the tremendously talented thespian Tamzin Merchant and the folks responsible for bringing George R.R. Martin's "Game of Thrones" to life for HBO. They...

Filming the Peacock sci-fi series “Teacup,” in which residents of a farm in rural Georgia must band together to survive after a series of bizarre events, meant a lot of night shoots and frequent use of gas masks.
Neither aspect was easy, but the cast — including Scott Speedman, Yvonne Strahovski, Rob Morgan and Chaske Spencer — found ways to cope. Speedman, who plays father-of-two James Chenoweth, said that “your brain turns off” at some point when filming goes all night.
Morgan, perhaps best known as Officer Powell on “Stranger Things,” is McNab, the mysterious man who shows up at the Chenoweths’ farm in a gas mask and warns them not to cross a blue line he’s just painted around their property.

In 1994, Cameron Diaz first appeared on screen as Tina Carlyle in The Mask. The world was introduced to a stunning blonde bombshell who seemed destined for Hollywood stardom. Although she looked like she had just walked off a runway, it was not just the actress’ looks that helped her land the role. In fact, the role was originally meant to go to Anna Nicole Smith. However, the now 52-year-old managed to sweep everyone away.

It was a long time coming, but Sam Elliott finally earned his first Oscar nomination for “A Star Is Born” (2018). Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
In a career spanning 50 years, Elliott has received scant awards recognition for his film career. In 1993, Jim Carrey was still just that white guy on In Living Color, but by the end of 1994, he was king of the world. In one year, Carrey had three hit comedies that topped the box office: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective in February, The Mask in July and Dumb and Dumber in December. Each is great and nostalgic in its own right, but given the fact that The Mask turns 30 this week, we caught up with the film’s director, Chuck Russell, to talk about the film’s 30 greatest moments.
30 The Loaner
“There’s a Stanley Ipkiss inside all of us,” says Russell, referring to Carrey’s character in The Mask. “That was the beauty of the character. Life treats us like shit and humiliates us and seeing it through Stanley’s character is funny and charming the way Jim portrayed it. The loaner car he gets is an example of that.

The then-17-year-old, who had already been working in films like “Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains,” Peter Bogdanovich’s “Mask,” and the American Playhouse production “Smooth Talk,” was a student at UCLA for “two days,” she said, when she was offered the role for the new Lynch film, a filmmaker she revered for “The Elephant Man.”

Laura Dern appeared on a recent episode of Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson’s “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast (via People) and remembered being forced to drop out of UCLA film school after she won the role of Sandy Williams in David Lynch’s 1986 masterpiece “Blue Velvet.” While Dern had already appeared in films such as “Mask,” it was “Blue Velvet” that served as her acting breakthrough and kicked off a career-spanning collaboration with Lynch.
“I was 17, so excited to get into UCLA,” Dern said. “I was there for two days, and I had auditioned and got offered the role in ‘Blue Velvet.’”
Dern was “ecstatic” over getting the film as she “worshipped” Lynch, who was already an Oscar-nominated filmmaker at that point in his career, thanks to 1980’s “The Elephant Man.” But when Dern went to speak to the head of her college department about getting a leave...

On the bill for the penultimate evening of the Tribeca Festival was Matthew Broderick and Judd Apatow and it was easy to assume that they’d go down Cable Guy memory lane.
The movie, which was plotted as another big Jim Carrey tentpole back in 1996 post Ace Ventura, Dumb & Dumber and The Mask, saw the comedy star get paid a then astounding $20M for the Columbia Pictures movie. The Ben Stiller directed pic was a memorable one for Apatow, who produced it, as it’s where he met his wife Leslie Mann. The Cable Guy failed stateside, a stone in Carrey’s then box office tentpole streak only grossing $60M stateside. Broderick played the straight comedy guy in the movie to Carrey’s acerbic cable technician. Indie musical “Heart Strings” will have its Los Angeles premiere June 30 at American Cinematheque’s Loz Feliz Theater. Director Ate de Jong (“Drop Dead Fred”) co-wrote the film with Steven Gaydos, Variety executive VP, Global Content, who is also co-producing.
“It’s a great honor to screen at the American Cinematheque. And especially to play the film at their Los Feliz location where ‘Heart Strings’ first began as a screenplay decades ago when I lived there after working on a Roger Corman film in Georgia,” Gaydos said. “Fans of 1970s American indie cinema might be surprised to find that Ate de Jong has just made an audience-engaging film with the subversive spirit and maverick attitude of that time. It only took 50 years to get the job done, which I hope makes Francis Coppola feel better about ‘Megalopolis!’”

After four decades of filmmaking, Renny Harlin isn’t slowing down in the slightest. The journeyman director, who’s most known for Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, Deep Blue Sea and A Nightmare on Elm Street 4, is back on the big screen with The Strangers: Chapter 1, the first film in a trilogy that he’s already shot across 52 days in Slovakia.
Chapter 1 stays true to Bryan Bertino’s 2008 horror classic, The Strangers, only it imagines a scenario where an analogue for Liv Tyler’s character definitively survives the central home invasion, setting up Chapter Two and Three. Madelaine Petsch’s Maya is now filling that protagonist role, as her cross-country road trip to Portland results in her and her boyfriend (Froy Gutierrez’s Ryan) having to stay at a small town Airbnb due to car trouble. That’s when the Strangers crawl out of the woodwork to play their patented cat-and-mouse game.

Renny Harlin’s The Strangers: Chapter 1 begins so rotely that it feels like a parody of every bad backwoods horror movie made in the last 50 years. An upwardly mobile young couple, Maya (Madelaine Petsch) and Ryan (Froy Gutierrez), are traveling cross-country to Portland for a job interview that Maya has lined up when they decide to make a pit stop for food. Rather than hit the nearest roadside McDonalds, they veer way off their route toward a diner in the tiny town of Venus, Oregon. And wouldn’t you know it, Maya and Ryan’s car breaks down, and since their cell service is spotty, they’re forced to spend the night in Venus. All the while, the town’s largely unwelcoming residents glare at them and mumble about “city folk.”
One diner employee, though, does offer Maya and Ryan some help, pointing them toward a nearby Airbnb cottage. This,...

We always love a good viral marketing campaign, and with Lionsgate gearing up to release The Strangers: Chapter 1 in theaters on May 17, they’re pulling out all the stops this month.
The three masked slashers from the franchise – known as Pinup Girl, Dollface and the Man in the Mask – have been showing up on home security cameras across the country!
Videos and images posted to Tiktok, Twitter, and even Next Door have been documenting the sightings, one of which is a creepy doorbell cam video of a roommate who was allegedly followed home by the masked trio earlier this month. Another video sees them lurking around outside of a gas station, eventually stopping to look directly into the security camera.
The Strangers were also spotted standing outside the Manhattan Criminal Court House, making for “a strange, slightly unsettling scene,” as one Twitter user perfectly described it.

Batman as a character has some amazing storylines that would make perfect sense to be adapted into an animated film. Initially, Bruce Timm thought that there was no way it was possible to adapt Batman: Under the Hood, an arc in the comics that served as the sequel to Death in the Family, which infamously killed off Jason Todd, who was serving Batman as his Robin after Dick Grayson’s departure.
Death in the Family
Bruce Timm, speaking to Animation World Network, talked about how he and Alan Burnett first came across the comic with the intention of adapting it. The problem started when the duo realized the amount of work it would take to just set up the story, and the various characters that were making an appearance as the narrative unfolded.
However, the pitch for the film was what ended up convincing the duo to go ahead with it.

The Mask played a massive role in establishing Cameron Diaz as one of the biggest Hollywood divas. Diaz was successful in impressing the audiences in her very first outing and flaunted an incredible chemistry with Jim Carrey. However, the 1994 classic’s script was never written for her. The director Chuck Russell’s original choice for the role was Anna Nicole Smith.

The character of Tina Carlyle stands as one of the primary attractions of The Mask. The audience immediately fell in love with Cameron Diaz and she was an instant favorite. Interestingly, the late model Anna Nicole Smith was chosen for the role. However, Smith left the film to work on Naked Gun 33+1⁄3: The Final Insult.

There is a good chance Ace Ventura: Pet Detective will come up in conversation if you ask someone who is strolling their dog on the street about their favorite Jim Carrey flick. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective earned mixed reviews upon its initial release, so it is almost funny to see how beloved it has become among fans despite this fact. Nevertheless, the film remains a hilarious detective satire.
Reviewers and viewers alike had a major effect because of Carrey’s performance. Not only did it initiate the actor’s cinematic career, but it also initiated a franchise. Having said that, what if we told you that Carrey was not the first choice to play such an iconic character?

The original contender for the role is also a legendary figure in the comedy film industry, but his comedic sensibility is nothing like Carrey’s outrageous and wild improvisation.

Jim Carrey’s The Mask was, is, and always will be one of the most goated comedy films of all time. Thanks to the lead actor’s undeniable charisma, Stanley Ipkiss found a home in the hearts of all comedy enthusiasts and we are yet to find a character that can kick him out. While Jim Carrey’s performance was undoubtedly exceptional, his chemistry with Cameron Diaz was another reason why we all love The Mask so much.

Influenced by Bruce Lee’s role as Kato in The Green Hornet, Black Mask stars Jet Li as Tsui Chik, “a librarian who leads a quiet, unassuming life – or, at least, that’s what he wants people to believe. In truth, he was once a member of the 701 Squad, a group of elite combatants produced by a failed super-soldier project. In-kind with his former comrades, his central nervous system has been altered to render him impervious to pain. When several of his fellow test subjects resurface and embark on a crimewave under the leadership of their former commander Hung Kuk (Patrick Lung), Tsui is forced to use his extraordinary abilities once more.
