Series creator John Kricfalusi was adamant about Stimpy not having a thick dopey sounding voice commonly seen in dim-witted cartoon sidekicks, having already chosen Billy West to provide Stimpy's voice, West tested a variety of voices until John Kricfalusi finally settled on a Larry Fine type voice.

Nickelodeon did not care for George Liquor and vetoed a majority of his proposed appearances in Ren and Stimpy. When Spumco was fired from the show, Nickelodeon had no desire to show Liquor again and sold the rights back to them.
