September marks Marcello Mastroianni’s centennial, and the Criterion Channel pays respect with a retrospective that puts the expected alongside some lesser-knowns: Monicelli’s The Organizer, Jacques Demy’s A Slightly Pregnant Man, and two by Ettore Scola. There’s also the welcome return of “Adventures In Moviegoing” with Rachel Kushner’s formidable selections, among them Fassbinder’s Mother Küsters Goes to Heaven, Pialat’s L’enfance nue, and Jean Eustache’s Le cochon. In the lead-up to His Three Daughters, a four-film Azazel Jacobs program arrives.

As Disney quietly disappears huge swathes of film history into its vaults, I'm going to spend 2020 celebrating Twentieth Century Fox and the Fox Film Corporation's films, what one might call their output if only someone were putting it out.And now they've quietly disappeared William Fox's name from the company: guilty by association with Rupert Murdoch, even though he never associated with him.***Twentieth Century Fox is now to be called Twentieth Century, the name of a company that ceased to be back in 1935 when it swallowed the beleaguered Fox Picture Company. Zanuck's pre-merger studio is actually rather well-represented on home video, considering it existed for less than four years: Zanuck's story instinct, which had served him so well at Warners/First National, may not have fired so consistently, but it gave us punchy entertainments like The Bowery, Blood Money, and The Call of the Wild. The studio's tastes were more eclectic than Warners,...

I really like Better Things, FX's new comedy starring and produced by Pamela Adlon, who was Louis C.K.'s frequent on- and off-screen collaborator on Louie. (Here's my review from yesterday.) The show is deeply autobiographical, with Adlon playing a thinly-disguised version of herself: a single mom to three daughters, and a former child actress still plugging away in show business (finding more success in voiceover work than on camera) decades later. At press tour, I sat down with Adlon to talk about how (when she was still going by Pamela Segall) she got started in the business, her early '80s androgynous period — highlighted by Willy/Milly, where she played an adolescent girl who wished to be a boy, and woke up the next morning with a penis — the transition into voice work on shows like King of the Hill, the ways that her new art imitates her old...

Cohen Media Group presents a double feature of two mid-period films from French auteur Alain Resnais, both significant titles overlooked on a resume of important and notable works. The first is 1983’s Love is a Bed of Roses, featuring revolving cast members who would frequent other titles from the director throughout the remainder of that decade, and also represents his first collaboration with actress/wife Sabine Azema, who would appear in nearly every one of his remaining film productions. The second is the superb 1984 film Love Unto Death, an existential portrait of love and death as fluid states of mind.
The playful Life is a Bed of Roses premiered at the Venice Film Festival and nabbed Cesar nominations for Azema as Best Supporting Actress and for production designer Jacques Saulnier. Penned by Jean Gruault (who wrote Resnais’ previous feature, 1980’s superior Mon Oncle D’Amerique), it’s a non-linear film divided into three distinct parts,...

Fontaine, who died aged 96 only hours after Peter O'Toole, was the prototype 'Hitchcock blonde' – attractive, malleable, neurotic
On a sad weekend for the film world, the news of the death of Lawrence of Arabia star Peter O'Toole was swiftly followed by that of the passing away of a leading light of an earlier generation: Joan Fontaine. Fontaine, perhaps best remembered as the prototype of the "Hitchcock blonde" – attractive, malleable, neurotic – died only a few hours after O'Toole, at the age of 96 on Sunday morning at home in Carmel in California.
Fontaine's most notable role was arguably that of the "second Mrs de Winter" in Rebecca, the 1940 adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's gothic novel that marked Alfred Hitchcock's Hollywood debut. he would go on to gain an Oscar nomination for the role in 1940 – and actually win the best actress award a year later for a second Hitchcock film, Suspicion.

Oscar-winning actor who played threatened heroines for Alfred Hitchcock in Rebecca and Suspicion
It was hard to cast the lead in Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca, filmed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1939. The female fans of the bestseller were very protective of the naive woman whom the widower Max de Winter marries and transports to his ancestral home of Manderley. None of the contenders – including Vivien Leigh, Anne Baxter and Loretta Young – felt right for the second Mrs de Winter, who was every lending-library reader's dream self.
To play opposite Laurence Olivier in the film, the producer David O Selznick suggested instead a 21-year-old actor with whom he was smitten: Joan Fontaine. The prolonged casting process made Fontaine anxious. Vulnerability was central to the part, and you can see that vulnerability, that inability to trust her own judgment, in every frame of the film. Joan Fontaine, the Oscar-winning actress who was one of the last remaining links to Hollywood’s golden age of the 1930s and ’40s, has died at age 96, her assistant confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
In her most famous films — Rebecca, for which she was Oscar-nominated, and Suspicion, for which she won — Fontaine came across as appealingly passive-aggressive. She could seem radiantly shy, believably insecure, gazing into the middle distance with a hesitancy that drew you immediately to her side. Yet she fashioned a movie career out of willpower and, quite possibly, large reservoirs of spite.

At first glance, this might not seem like the finest use of your tax dollars, but think about it: Your life would suck without Kelly Clarkson. Plus, this Nasa-Idol alliance could raise the stakes during Hollywood Week: Contestants who forget their lyrics or botch their melodies will be herded like livestock into waiting vans and sent to Johnson Space Center,...

It was American Idol's ninth visit to Texas, the same state where Kelly Clarkson was discovered a decade ago. And judging by Thursday's episode, taped in Houston, the judges may have found a competitor to match the original Idol's talent. Kristine Osorio was the night's clear highlight and her stunning version of Adele's "One and Only" immediately caused Jennifer Lopez to remark, "Thank you, God!" Osorio, a 28-year-old student, also has one of the season's more compelling back-stories. A mother of three whose music career was sidelined when she got pregnant, Osorio is struggling to pay bills...

What a difference five years and some honey-colored lowlights can make. American Idol golden ticket winner Baylie Brown had auditioned for season 6 in 2007, only to be thwarted during the dreaded Hollywood week group numbers by some terrible creatures from New Jersey. Watch the now-21-year-old sing Faith Hill in front of (We Miss You) Simon, Paula, and Randy.
Baylie Brown: Season 6 audition
I felt weird typing “We Miss You” above, because Simon Cowell was so generic and scripted and awful throughout The X Factor last fall. What I really meant was that season 11 of American Idol sorely misses the...

Baylie Brown is back on "American Idol." This 21-year-old cutie auditioned in Season 6, when she was just a baby at 16 and was a casualty of the awful (read: awesome) Group Day during the Hollywood Rounds.
We actually remember Baylie, if only because she was paired with that horrid Antonella Barba, who had absolutely no business being in the Top 24 and was then revealed to have some skanky toilet pictures, or something. Anyway. We thought it was a shame when Baylie was sent home last time.
But Baylie is back and she busts out Bon Jovi's "Bed of Roses" and it's just gorgeous. J.Lo is ready to send her through immediately, saying, "I'm ready to vote, are y'all? You're great and I hope that you hold it together for Hollywood." And Randy comments that she's improved significantly since last time around.
What did you think, "Idol" fans? And just in case you're curious,...

Fox The judges on “American Idol.”
“American Idol” hit the state of Texas and added a twist of outer space with a good luck to the contestants from the international space station. Some of the contestants tonight were more than out there.
They haven’t paraded out the really dismal voices, from the really wacky characters…that is, until tonight. Phong Vu sang “Unbreak My Heart” and it was tough enough to listen to him bellow; then he went one...

Beginning a series looking at obscure pre-Code Hollywood films, made between the advent of sound and the strict enforcement of the Production Code. Some of these movies are rightly celebrated and frequently screened: Baby Face (1933), Red Headed Woman (1932), even to some extent Bed of Roses (1933). But others are trapped in copyright limbo or locked in vaults by studios too blind to exploit their holdings. That's the kind we're going to look at.
Tay Garnett was a typical tough-guy director, working in every genre but with a feeling for exotic climes (usually reproduced on the backlot). His reputation—that of a seventh-rate Howard Hawks, maybe—has never been hugely prestigious, and despite his frequently working on the screenplays of Hawks' films, and even making cameo appearances, the notion of Garnett as auteur never really took hold. Maybe, just maybe, this is partly due to the scarcity of some of his most interesting work.

In the upcoming action comedy Tower Heist, Alan Alda plays a corrupt Wall Street investor who is placed under house arrest after swindling people out of billions of dollars. But if you’ve seen the trailer for the flick or visited ArchitecturalDigest.com today, you’d argue immediately that staying in those digs hardly qualifies as any sort of punishment. (Of course, Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, and their band of fellow vengeance-seekers are scheming to serve him with their own special brand of justice. I’m assuming they let the Occupy Wall Street kids have at him, but I’ll...

You remember that awesome thing you watched happen to someone else at a concert and wished had happened to you? Here’s why I’m asking: Last night, I went to see Willie Nelson. At 78, Willie doesn’t move around the stage a lot, so when he walked to the apron, we all learned forward in our seats. He took off the red bandana he was wearing and tossed it to a woman in the front row. A little later, now wearing a second bandana, he started walking to the apron again. This time, there were anticipatory “Oooh”s, and...

Bon Jovi are releasing a brand new greatest hits collection spanning their 25-year-plus career. It's titled, what else, "Greatest Hits."
Bon Jovi "Greatest Hits" features 14 of the band's worldwide hits, including "It's My Life," "Livin' On a Prayer," "Always," and "Wanted Dead or Alive." A two-disc edition, "Greatest Hits - Ultimate Collection," will feature 24 hits and fan favorites, including songs like "Bed of Roses," "Keep the Faith," and "These Days."
The band recorded four new tracks for the new compilations, "The More Things Change," "No Apologies," "This Is Love, This Is Life" and the first single, "What Do You Got?" "Greatest Hits" will feature "What Do You Got?" and one other new track, while "Greatest Hits - Ultimate Collection" will feature all four.
The new songs were written specifically for inclusion on the new greatest hits set, the band's first since 1994's "Crossroad." 2003's "This Left Feels Right" saw the...

How much do we love this man and his perpetual fountain of youth? He.Does.Not.Age. But he does get injured. Jon Bon Jovi hurt himself pretty badly while performing a concert at the New Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey. Being the classy star that he is, Jon finished his set and then had to be carried off the stage by the rest of the band. Ouch. His rep explained what went down. “Near the end of Bon Jovi’s two-and-a-half hour show at New Meadowlands Stadium on Friday night, Jon Bon Jovi sustained a torn calf muscle … The injury will not prevent Bon Jovi from playing any of their upcoming stadium dates this summer.” That’s why you can see Jonny limping around to (insert irony) Livin’ on A Prayer (whilst probably thinking “we’re half way there-eeee”.) Another spokesman told People, “Jon Bon Jovi sustained a torn calf muscle.

Rivalries between the states are inevitable but ultimately unproductive. While Victoria may not have the highest production investment total of the year, the cultural capital of Australia is strengthening its local slate.
Victoria is considered Australia’s cultural capital, so why isn’t it the country’s screen production capital too, or at least not anymore?
According to the National Survey of Feature Film and TV Drama Production, in 2008/09 the value of the feature and TV drama production slate in Victoria was $157m, 23 percent down from last year’s
$251m. The drop placed Victoria behind Nsw and its $434m, for the third time in the last five years.
All states savour the moment when statistics favour their efforts, but sometimes the numbers are not on their side. However, there are reasons behind this apparent under-performance, and things that those same numbers are not telling.
The dramatic statistical fluctuation is the...

I feel like the producers of Beastly, a modern-day Beauty and the Beast based on the young adult novel by Alex Finn, are missing an opportunity to secure the thirtysomething females by not showing Parenthood's Peter Krause in the trailer (embedded after the jump). I'm sure his role is small. He's the father who banishes his son Kyle (star Alex Pettyfer) to Brooklyn after a goth classmate (Mary-Kate Olsen) turns him as ugly on the outside as he in on the inside and gives him one year to find someone (Vanessa Hudgens) who loves him anyway. But add in...

Also scheduled to present awards are actors Kristen Bell, Jeff Bridges and Josh Duhamel and musicians Norah Jones, Ricky Martin, Carlos Santana and ex-Beatle Ringo Starr.

"Jennifer Jones, 90, an actress who won an Academy Award for playing a saint in The Song of Bernadette and became a popular sinner in Hollywood melodramas including Duel in the Sun and Love is a Many-Splendored Thing, died Thursday at her home in Malibu, Calif," reports Adam Bernstein in the Washington Post.
"Jennifer Jones remains one of the more controversial actresses in the Hollywood cinema," writes Richard Lippe in Film Reference. "In general, her professional and personal involvement with David O Selznick has been given a prominence that has colored assessments of Jones's distinctive contribution to 1940s cinema. Interestingly, the central issue is not that Jones lacked talent or screen presence. The longstanding criticism is that Selznick, because of his commitment to Jones, had no critical distance and, with King Vidor's Duel in the Sun, tried to fashion an erotic identity for her, making Jones into a ridiculous creation." Still,...

New 'Heroes': Daniels, Pardue into family fare
Jeff Daniels and Kip Pardue have joined Sigourney Weaver and Emile Hirsch in the indie Imaginary Heroes for writer-turned-director Dan Harris. Production is scheduled to start Aug. 14 in New Jersey. The darkly comic drama revolves around the secrets and lies of American families. It tells the story of a four-member family and how they deal with the suicide of the eldest son, an accomplished swimmer idolized by the community and his parents as being the "perfect boy" (Pardue). Daniels will star as the father, with Weaver playing the mother and Hirsch the youngest son. Harris is directing from his own original screenplay. Producers on the project include Signature's Moshe and Illana Diamant (Tristan & Isolde), Art Linson (Spartan), Gina Resnick (Prey for Rock and Roll) and Denise Shaw (Bed of Roses). William Morris Independent packaged the indie project and is repping the distribution rights for the film. Daniels is repped by ICM. Pardue, who is in Ireland filming Whiter Shade of Pale opposite Jennifer Love Hewitt, is repped by CAA and the Untitled Entertainment/Parseghian/Planco management outfit.
