Richard Elfman redefined underground cinema with his barely-categorizable 1980 film Forbidden Zone, a vehicle for his musical unit The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo. He re-energized absurdist cinema with the musically-propelled sci-fi comedy Aliens, Clowns &- Geeks (2021). Directed and written by Elfman, the upcoming Bloody Bridget is another music-driven piece with a score by Ego Plum and Richard’s brother Danny Elfman.
For Bloody Bridget, Elfman is infusing new blood, and plenty of heart, into the vampire genre he thought he’d staked with the 1998 cult horror movie Revenant (aka Modern Vampires). Richard’s wife Anastasia Elfman plays Bridget, a dance horror choreographer who is sexually harassed and tossed into a legal wringer. Voodoo father Baron Samedi (Jean Charles) mistakes her for his wife, the Irish saint Maman Brigitte, and turns her into a “Valentine vampire.” Blood is just an appetizer for the main course. She “must feast on the hearts of evil-doers,...

Seven months after landing the coveted top jobs at Warner Bros Motion Picture studios, co-chairpersons Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy were bestowed with the PGA Milestone award Saturday night. The pair paid respect for their mega industry mentors; remembered emotionally their cinematic New York City and New Jersey youths; and gave a shoutout to their new boss, Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
“I see I’ve entered the twilight portion of my career where they start giving you body-of-work awards … sort of like getting that AARP mailer for the first time. Sorry to have dragged you into this, Pam. Pam is way younger than I am, as you can all see,” De Luca joked soon after taking the stage after Ron Howard’s warm introduction to the packed crowd at the Beverly Hilton.

February is poised to maintain the healthy box-office pace with the impending release of the first Marvel title in more than three months. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (Disney) begins shows on February 16, and its initial performance could represent nearly half of the month’s gross.
January’s U.S./Canada box office was up by just under 50 percent from 2022. That’s impressive. If we could maintain that course, the 2023 box-office total would be 11 million — less than a half-million off the pre-pandemic 2019 total (when ticket prices were at least 20 percent lower). With 2023 projections closer to 9 million, this initial boost suggests that that goal will be met.
Muting this upside is that January’s gross represented two thirds of 2020, the last pre-Covid January. In terms of actual ticket sales, against current ticket prices, that drops our January 2023 gross to 55 percent of 2020.

Kinetic Games recently unleashed another portion of their major overhaul of Phasmophobia with the new Tempest Update. Version 0.8.0.0 of Phasmophobia brings with it a revamped weather system, adjustments to ghosts and the reward system, gameplay tweaks and more.
The biggest change in the update comes with the “Weather 2.0”, which reintroduces fog into Phasmophobia (which has gotten a visual overhaul), tweaks to existing weather such as rain and snow, and also brings new graphic options into the game, such as sky light (“for enabling sun or moonlight in each location”).
Ghosts have also received tweaks, both individually and overall. For example, hunting ghosts’ model flickers are now synced across all players (which aids in the hunt photo reliability). The Revenant has received a tweak in its speed, while Goryo has had its rules changed for roaming.
Items have also seen tweaks and graphical improvements. Crucifixes can now be placed wherever the player chooses,...

The representation landscape in Hollywood appears to be shifting once again.
Anonymous Content, the management and production company that’s backed The Revenant, Mr. Robot, and clients Samuel L. Jackson and Emma Stone, is exploring an acquisition of fast-rising firm Grandview/Automatik. The latter has of the moment clients such as Top Gun: Maverick director Joe Kosinski, House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal, and Dan Trachtenberg, the director of Hulu’s most watched movie, Prey.
Spokespersons for both companies declined to comment but chatter of a possible merger surfaced in recent weeks. It is not clear in what stages the talks are in.
Anonymous, like several other large-size firms, is backed by private equity — Laurene Powell Jobs’ Emerson Collective is a financier — while Grandview/Automatik, founded in 2014 by former CAA agents, is one of the few significant concerns still in private hands. The...

The pitch is pretty strong. It’s Idris Elba versus a lion. It’s Jaws on land. And it’s from a director who has well-proven teeth when it comes to the action and disaster movie genres. Icelander Baltasar Kormákur, who made true story-based adventures Everest and The Deep, as well as actioners including 2 Guns and Contraband, has a further connection to the material. When he was little, he wanted to be “a lion scientist.”
“I have always been fascinated by animals, but [particularly] lions. So I was like, ‘Okay, this is something I would love to do,’” he tells Den of Geek magazine. Kormákur is talking to us from London, where he’s currently in the edit suite putting the finishing touches on the movie. He had one condition when agreeing to the project: “I made it clear that, if I was to do this movie, I would have to shoot it in Africa.

Perhaps Leonardo DiCaprio said it best: "My mother is a walking miracle." Let's face it, there's nothing more endearing than hearing an actor gush about his true leading lady, the woman who gave birth to him. Leonardo himself serves as a prime example. Not only has he repeatedly praised his mom, Irmelin Indenbirken, but he's also been known to but he's also been known to bring her as his "date" for big nights like the Golden Globes. In fact, after winning the award for Best Actor at the 2016 BAFTAs, the Revenant star took the opportunity to highlight the most important person in the room to him. "I would not be standing up here if it wasn't for this...

Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu will be back with a new film by the end of 2022. Netflix has acquired the “Revenant” filmmaker’s new comedy “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths” for release globally in theaters and on Netflix at the end of the year.
Written by Iñárritu and Nicolás Giacobone (who previously collaborated on the Oscar-winning script for “Birdman or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance” and “Biutiful”), “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths” is described as a nostalgic comedy set against an epic personal journey. It chronicles the story of a renowned Mexican journalist and documentary filmmaker, who returns home and works through an existential crisis as he grapples with his identity, familial relationships, the folly of his memories as well as the past of his country. He seeks answers in his past to reconcile who he is in the present.

Hello, everyone! This week’s Blu-ray and DVD offerings are quite an eclectic bunch, as we have a few recent titles coming out on Tuesday, but we also have a few classic horrors from Mexico finally getting a release, which is pretty darned cool. In terms of the newer horrors, Guillermo del Toro’s masterpiece Nightmare Alley is heading home to various formats, and if you missed it when it was airing, now you can finally catch up on the Dexter: New Blood revival this week as well. As mentioned, Indicator is showing some love to two classic horror movies from Mexico—La Llorona and The Phantom of the Monastery—on Blu-ray this week, and Richard Elfman’s Modern Vampires is getting the HD treatment, too.
Other home media titles coming home on March 22nd include 6:45, Blood Claws, Grave of the Living Dead, Bryan Loves You: Collector’s Edition,...

InterviewThe psychological thriller is releasing in theatres on Thursday.Neelima MenonFacebookIn his first two films (Adventures of Omanakuttan and Iblis), Rohith Vs has unfailingly projected his fascination for surrealism. His debut, after being a non-starter, finally got some mileage after the young filmmaker took to Facebook and pleaded with the audience to watch it before it exited the theatres. It was about a young man called Omanakuttan who played complicated mind games with the audience and Iblis was this dreamy experimental film about life after death. But when it comes to Kala (which releases on Thursday), he seems to have nullified all attempts to indulge in quasi fantasies and has instead gone all out to divulge man’s basic instincts. “It’s a psychological thriller. There is ego, lust, vengeance. There might be a negative connotation to it as it can be about people who are considered outcasts in society.

No one sets out to make a cult movie. Most filmmakers aspire to commercial heights even if they only have the budgets for a B-movie. They see films like Blair Witch realign box office accounting and apply all kinds of quantum physics to mimic the exponential multiplication. Very few achieve it, and the ones which do usually do it by accident, and certainly not with serious intent. Aliens, Clowns & Geeks is not afraid to be ridiculous. It joins the ranks as such brave films as Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Killer Klowns From Outer Space, and Frankenhooker.
It is also so much more than these films, dripping with artistry, and yet considerably less, with masturbating aliens, pussy ping pong, and sphincter-pinching obelisks. Richard Elfman’s sci-fi comedy has an abundance of experimental fun and a happily reckless disregard for taste. It owes as much to Frank Zappa as it does to Frank Capra,...

Tom Hardy has a lot in common with The Dark Knight Rises co-star Christian Bale beyond just working with director Christopher Nolan three times. Both actors are famed for their dedicated and chameleonic approach to slipping into character that includes shedding weight, piling on the pounds, getting ripped and adopting a different accent for almost every role, so much so that a lot of either man’s fans genuinely have no idea what their normal speaking voice sounds like.
Over the years, Hardy’s accents have been one of the most hotly anticipated aspects of any new movie he attaches himself to, with his latest effort, Capone, perhaps the most bizarre yet. However, the hardest to decipher was undoubtedly Bane in the conclusion to the Dark Knight Trilogy, with a lot of people complaining that the sound mix made the hulking villain impossible to understand at certain points.

The list of projects that Quentin Tarantino never got around to making is much longer than the back catalogue of movies he’s actually helmed, covering everything from Inglorious Basterds and Pulp Fiction spinoffs Killer Crow and Double V Vega respectively, to sequel Kill Bill Vol. 3 via the likes of Luke Cage, literary adaptations 40 Lashes Less One and The Berlin Game, along with his abandoned hopes of directing Pierce Brosnan as James Bond in Casino Royale.
For years, the filmmaker has been talking about his R-rated Star Trek movie, but it seems very unlikely to happen. After all, few people were actually expecting Tarantino to direct it himself given that he’s always spoken about retiring after his tenth feature, and a blockbuster sci-fi that’s part of a franchise would be a strange way for such a unique and distinctive talent to bow out.

Then again, given how successful Respawn’s in-game Halloween celebrations proved to be last year, it doesn’t exactly take a bunch of data mined information to predict the spooky occasion’s return to Kings Canyon. While the name might be identical, however, there’s plenty here for fresh and returning players alike to sink their teeth into over the next fortnight or so, including brand new game mode, Shadow Royale. Before we get into the nitty gritty of what that limited time affair entails, though, check out the gallery below for a preview of the cosmetics headed to an in-game store near you.

George Clooney is no stranger to the space genre. Having starred in Steven Soderbergh’s “Solaris” and Alfonso Cuaron’s Oscar-winning “Gravity,” Clooney is now attempting to craft his own space epic as the star and director of Netflix’s upcoming “The Midnight Sky,” based on the novel “Good Morning, Midnight” by Lily Brooks-Dalton. In a first look preview of the film published by Vanity Fair, Clooney bills the project as “Gravity” meets “The Revenant,” noting, “They’re not natural fits, so it was a constant balancing act.”
That Clooney’s “Midnight Sky” would resemble Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Oscar-winning adventure epic “The Revenant” is not by accident, as the project was written by “Revenant” screenwriter Mark L. Smith. Clooney stars in the film as Augustine, a cancer-stricken scientist who ties to prevent a group of astronauts from returning to Earth after a global catastrophe wipes out the planet. Clearly with far too much time on their hands and unable to conceive of anything productive, some Apex Legends players have resorted to criticizing the battle royale for non-issues. Because the addition of two female characters in a row is simply too much femininity to handle for the vocal minority, developer Respawn Entertainment has found itself addressing such ridiculous complaints over on Twitter, dismissing them as exactly what they are – petulant.
Following a now-deleted post from one ‘fan’ stating, “I didn’t know I was playing a feminist game… Might as well just put a pink dress on Revenant,” other, more level-headed users quickly came to Respawn’s defence. Apex design director Jason McCord eventually joined the conversation and recalled a brief discussion that took place between his colleagues on the subject.

As is standard whenever a new season rolls around, Respawn has taken the opportunity afforded by the tri-monthly refresh to make some much-needed changes to some of Apex Legends‘ underperforming characters.
The theme this time around, it seems, is the Scout class in general which, according to the developer, has fallen to the wayside somewhat as of late. A series of extensive adjustments to Pathfinder, Bloodhound and Crypto are par for the course this time around, then, but will they be enough to nudge any of the trio up existing tier lists? Given how long it takes for a new meta to be established following sizable updates such as these, it’s far too soon to make a decisive judgement, though on paper, at least, the tweaks certainly look promising.
Of the three, Pathfinder has received the smallest number of changes, with Respawn admitting that, in light of giving every Scout-based character access to beacons,...

As any Apex Legends worth their salt undoubtedly knows by now: loot is almost as important to success as innate skill.
Even if you’re the most reliable shot when it comes time to engage in frenzied skirmishes, if a member of the opposing team has a similar affinity for accuracy, the player left standing will almost always be the one with superior armor, a healthy supply of restoratives and best-in-class weapon attachments. That being the case, then, it’s not at all surprising that Apex‘s loot vaults – secure underground bunkers filled to bursting point with some of the best gear available – are often the first port of call for teams looking to get an early leg up on the competition.
Of course, were it that simple, the entire lobby in every match would immediately descend on the nearest vault to steal its contents, but only through the acquisition...

Broken Ghost is a multi-part series of short stories and objectives delivered over the last several weeks – each one further teasing where the overarching narrative is headed next – with the final piece of the puzzle, so to speak, having finally been delivered yesterday.
Following on from the recovery of simulacrum Ash’s head in a previous installment, Broken Ghost’s conclusion comes to a close by asking the player to reunite the brain box with its worn and battered body, an act that immediately results in Ash’s resurrection. While it’s certainly the most logical assumption, therefore, to suggest that Ash is intended to be Season 6’s new playable character, Respawn has pulled the wool over players’ eyes in the past, so we...

With just a few weeks to go until the presumed start date for Apex Legends Season 5 rolls around, it appears as if Respawn is already making preparations for the upcoming refresh.
While the developer has yet to announce anything concrete concerning the battle royale’s next major update, precedent essentially confirms, at the very least, that players can look forward to the arrival of a new playable character at the bare minimum, though who (or what) they’ll be likely won’t be revealed for at least a few weeks just yet. As has become custom, however, it appears as if data miners may have already found the answer in the form of Loba.
Having been mentioned in several past leaks, fans believe the name belongs to the very same individual first seen in Revenant’s slick Season 4 trailer where she was depicted as a young girl.

Apex Legends fans hankering for some locational diversity in their favourite battle royale are in for a treat very soon.
Yesterday, Respawn Entertainment confirmed via social media that original map Kings Canyon will once again be open for business, but only for a limited time. Access to the battleground will be granted later today and continue to be available up until next week, February 24th, but why the incredibly tight window of availability? Who knows, though the extremely brief period will undoubtedly contribute to elevated server traffic over the coming weekend.
It’s worth noting, too, that you won’t have to rely on luck for a return visit, as the developer confirms that players will have the option of choosing between both Kings Canyon and World’s Edge until the event period ends. Check out the announcement below:
We're going back to where it all started.

By and large, Respawn’s delivery of Apex Legends Season 4 has gone off without a hitch.
Following a truly excellent bait-and-switch marketing campaign that saw supposed new Legend Forge replaced with fan-favorite Revenant, hype for the battle royale’s fourth seasonal refresh has been off the charts. Having had a fortnight to acclimatise themselves to a majorly revamped World’s Edge map, rejigged ranked changes and, of course, a fresh metagame, however, players are beginning to notice the presence of a few cracks in an otherwise flawless update.
Currently, one of the hottest topics over on Apex‘s official subreddit is that concerning Revenant’s hitboxes. The term, for those unaware, refers to the surface area of each Legend which, when hit, registers incoming damage. Due to their size, characters such as Gibraltar and Caustic are ‘easier’ to hit as a result, a downside that ultimately resulted in Respawn giving...

Humans aren’t the only living beings currently milling about in World’s Edge, it would seem.
Apex Legends Season 4 finally kicked off last week, bringing with it bunch of new content, though one feature that’s remained somewhat the same is the battle royale’s map. Unlike Season 3, Respawn opted to keep the action in World’s Edge for the second season running, though not without first making some major landscape changes. Besides the addition of a colossal Planet Harvester at the map’s epicenter, several existing townships and hamlets have received their own makeovers, with Capitol City, in particular, having been split right down the middle as a result of Hammond Robotics’ new mining operation.
Now that players have had time to acclimatize themselves to World’s Edge’s new layout, however, some believe they’ve spotted what appears to be a pack of roaming wolves skittering about the concrete jungle.

Hype for Apex Legends is at an all-time high thanks to a masterful ongoing marketing campaign by Respawn.
As part of a special livestream last week, the developer revealed initial details for the battle royale’s fourth season, including official artwork for a new Legend. Forge, the musclebound and eager melee brawler was confirmed to be joining Apex‘s cast next week alongside a new addition to players’ armories, the bolt-action Sentinel sniper rifle. Yesterday, however, events took a surprise turn indeed.
In what initially appears to be a short animated film further exploring the character’s background and imminent entry into the Apex Games, an assassin interrupts the interview by skewering Forge straight through the chest with a giant blade. Seemingly buried before his illustrious career could even begin, fans immediately identified the killer as none other than Revenant. Apex Legends fans are currently enjoying one hell of an emotional rollercoaster ride in the build-up to Season 4 and we’re excited to see how it’ll end.
Last week, developer Respawn Entertainment revealed via a special livestream that Forge would be next in line to join the battle royale’s existing cast. Viewers tuning in were even treated to a first look at the self-assured warrior and close-quarters brawler but now… Well, we’re not sure what to believe anymore. Just moments ago, an animated short – titled Up Close and Personal with Lisa Stone – depicts Forge giving a one-to-one interview with Stone discussing his recent selection for the Apex Games.
Towards the trailer’s end, however, what appears to be a technical fault swallows the set in darkness and cuts away from Forge mid-dialogue. Within moments of cutting back to the newcomer, a shadowy figure seen creeping up behind...

Respawn Entertainment has finally pulled back the curtain on Apex Legends Season 4.
As part of a special livestream last week, the developer revealed several new features for the battle royale’s next major content update, including brand new Legend Forge. The musclebound warrior, who data miners leaked just days prior to his official unveiling, is scheduled to land next week, February 4th, though fans now think that the newcomer might not be the only hero coming in Season 4.
Revenant, the mysterious robot who hosted last year’s Fight or Fright Halloween event in a shadowy rendition of Kings Canyon, has long been rumored to join Apex‘s roster. Prior to Forge’s official announcement, in fact, many had believed the former to be a shoo-in for Meltdown’s successor and, believe it or not, that might still be the case. While it’s had its fair share of bumps and bruises over the last year, Apex Legends has continued to churn out content at a steady rate, and recently, Respawn Entertainment pulled back the curtain on the upcoming fourth season. As you might imagine, there’s plenty to look forward to, including a new legend, a sentinel bolt-action sniper rifle, and an all-new battle pass.
Needless to say, Respawn has been doing a great job at drip-feeding new information to the fanbase, but it looks like someone might have jumped the gun, so to speak. As reported by ComicBook.com, a supposedly leaked trailer has been making its way around the web, and it hints at another yet-to-be-released playable character. Specifically, Revenant.

Scifi comedy Aliens, Clowns & Geeks release date set for Mexico’s Dia de los Muertos celebration.
A cult classic in the making will debut at a tribute to a horror classic during a celebration of the dead. The festival takes place in Mexico City from Oct. 30 to Nov. 3 and includes immersive events that intertwine with Mexico’s Dia de los Muertos celebration.
Aliens, Clowns & Geeks is directed by Richard Elfman, who helmed the cult classic Forbidden Zone. Elfman's live theatrical pre-shows for that film are legendary and the tradition will continue. Charming, captivating and lovely. That describes both the musical La La Land and its two stars, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Written and directed by Damien Chazelle (Whiplash), La La Land is an ode to Hollywood’s glorious bygone musicals, the city of Los Angeles and those who arrive in Tinseltown looking to make their dreams come true.
Gosling plays Sebastian, a jazz pianist who yearns to open his own jazz club, and Stone is Mia, a struggling actor who spends more time serving coffee than performing. Their bittersweet relationship is played out through song, dance and a display of wonderfully poignant acting.

You think you’ve seen one-of-a-kind movies? Banana oil! Forbidden Zone, there’s nothing like it.
The world of motion pictures is loaded with brilliant films and original visions, but few are without precedent. Forbidden Zone is a one of a kind movie that is both highly intelligent and unafraid to be broadly stupid. It mixes the most nightmarish elements of hundreds of film moments, unintentionally of course, with some of the most emotionally stirring music ever to prop up celluloid. If it weren’t for the snatches of dialogue, it might be considered the greatest prog rock opera.
Forbidden Zone is a work of pure originality. It is a fever dream from the mind of a musical interloper that has no peer. Characterizations mean nothing in Forbidden Zone. Neither does storyline or continuity. The basic laws of physics don’t apply so why should the rules of cinema?...

Exclusive: Wilfried Van Baelen’s Belgium-based, post-production outfit, Galaxy Studios has finalised a three-film deal with filmmaker Richard Elfman (Modern Vampires).
The deal will see Elfman working with Van Baelen’s Auro Technologies, using new immersive sound format Auro-3D on all three of the films.
Richard Elfman’s first film under the Galaxy/Auro-3D deal will be a sequel to his 1980 cult hit, the musical/fantasy Forbidden Zone.
Composer Danny Elfman and actress Jenna Elfman are both attached to Forbidden Zone 2, with further names soon to be announced.
The Auro-3D format is currently on display at the Cannes Film Festival in an Auro-3D theatre specially constructed next to the Auro offices and lounge on the Hotel Majestic Plage.
“As Forbidden Zone 2 is wall-to-wall music - to be released along with a video game - Auro-3D’s immersive sound will really knock the ball out of the park,” said Elfman...
