“Reasonable Doubt” Season 2 is headed back into the courtroom, and the cast, as well as the slew of new additions are ready to put it in session.

It’s been a minute since Season 1 of “Reasonable Doubt,” and between Jax getting kidnapped by a deranged client-turned-lover and her bestie Shanelle (Shannon Kane) seemingly murdering her husband, there’s no telling what’s about to go down in Season 2. But the series brought in veteran actor Morris Chestnut, who will star as defense attorney Corey Cash, to help lift the load.

Kim Kardashian is pairing with La La Anthony and Kenya Barris for her first-look deal at 20th Television: They’ll be adapting “The Love Playbook,” the New York Times best-seller co-written by Anthony, for Hulu.

The reality TV star’s deal with the studio will see her developing dramas, comedies and limited series.

“I’m incredibly interested in telling stories that are personal, complicated, relevant, from my own experiences and those familiar to me. I had a front row seat to working with the exceptional team at 20th Television during ‘American Horror Story: Delicate’, and I’m so excited to dive into developing my first wave of television projects with the team led by Karey Burke and Eric Schrier, and to continue working alongside Craig Erwich and his entire group at Hulu and Disney,” said Kardashian in a statement shared with TheWrap.

Anthony will star in the series and executive produce alongside Kardashian.

Returning in June on Netflix is the third season of the fantasy series Sweet Tooth. Based on the beloved comic book series created by Jeff Lemire, the show tells the story of society after it has been decimated by a virus and human-animal hybrids begin to appear. The focus of the show is Gus, a young half-human, half-deer boy who is looking for his mother. Season one of Sweet Tooth debuted in June 2021, with season two arriving last June. Netflix’s list of new releases for June 2024 look suspiciously like last month’s.

That’s because the biggest item on the schedule is Bridgerton season 3 once again. The final four episodes of Bridgerton‘s third season will premiere on June 13. Polin fans everywhere, rejoice! Other TV items of note this month include the third and final season of Sweet Tooth (June 6), Worst Roommate Ever season 2 (June 26), and That ’90s Show Part 2 (June 28).

Bridgerton aside, Netflix’s original movie options this month might be even more impressive than the TV slate. Richard Linklater’s Hitman, which stars Glen Powell as the titular assassin, premieres on June 7. That will be followed by documentary Black Barbie on June 19, the Jessica Alba-starring Trigger Warning on June 21, and romcom A Family Affair on June 28

Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.

Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.

Tubi is offering lots of originals for July, including the thriller “Five Star Murder” on July 28. A concierge and a guest investigate a hotel murder while a storm traps nasty hidden-treasure hunters inside.

Also coming to the streamer, a podcaster investigates his sister’s death in “Deep Web: Murdershow” on July 8. The murder leads him to a site where the highest bidder determines how a victim is killed.

“The Mummy” franchise is available July 1. In the first installment, an adventurer in 1926 Egypt travels to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, with a librarian and her older brother. Excited by their discoveries, they accidentally awaken Imhotep, a cursed high priest who was mummified alive. Now, the all-powerful Imhotep must be destroyed before his wrath destroys everything in his path. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz co-star in the action-packed thriller.

When Gabrielle Union-Wade turned 50 last October, the veteran actor and producer experienced a personal transformation, which has also filtered into her latest work. This era of her career, she says, is about embracing the possibilities.

Exclusive: Twenty-year Sony Pictures executive Peter Calvin Nelson is joining Samuel Goldwyn Film as the Head of Production.

At Sony, Nelson served as SVP of Production Stage 6 Films and oversaw development and production on more than 125 motion pictures during his tenure with the Culver City lot.

Initially, during his time at Screen Gems, Nelson worked on a multitude of acquisitions and productions including Two Can Play that Game, Underworld, The Brothers and This Christmas. A revival of “The Game” has been ordered to series at Paramount Plus, with original series stars Wendy Raquel Robinson and Hosea Chanchez set to return.

Robinson will reprise the role of sports agent Tasha Mack, while Chanchez will once again play footballer Malik Wright. Both starred in the entire nine-season run of the original series. Several other original cast members will appear in the series as well. The revival will also relocate from San Diego to Las Vegas.

The half-hour series has been given a 10-episode order at the streamer. Devon Greggory will serve as writer, executive producer and showrunner. Original series creator Mara Brock Akil will executive produce along with Salim Akil via Akil Productions, Kelsey Grammer, and Tom Russo of Grammnet Nh Productions. As Black History Month kicks off, Comcast NBCUniversal and African American Film Critics Association (Aafca) are partnering to launch the Black Experience on Xfinity, a first-of-its kind destination of Black entertainment, movies, TV shows, news, and more. The newly launched channel will be available Xfinity X1 and Flex as well as the Xfinity Stream app.

The channel will be curated by industry leaders and feature content from many of Xfinity’s existing network partners at no additional cost, while investing millions of dollars in fostering and showcasing emerging Black content creators. The channel is the only one of its kind endorsed by the Aafca.

Quentin Tarantino fans know Vivica A. Fox as the assassin Vernita Green who goes head-to-head with Uma Thurma’s Bride in a bloody smackdown in Green’s suburban home. Fox’s scene opens “Kill Bill” with a bang, and the actress looks back on the making of the martial arts epic in her new book, “Every Day I’m Hustling.” Time has released an excerpt from the memoir in which Fox gets brutally honest about auditioning for Tarantino.

Before Fox was even able to properly audition, she had to meet Tarantino first to see if he liked her. The two had a 15 minute interview at a coffee shop where Tarantino said he first realized Fox could be Vernita Green after he saw her on the DVD cover of “Two Can Play That Game.”

Exclusive: Morris Chestnut, who made his film debut in John Singleton’s seminal 1991 drama Boyz N The Hood, has signed a three-picture deal with Sony’s Screen Gems as an actor and producer. The first of the pics is upcoming thriller The Perfect Guy, which stars Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy, and Chestnut. The next film to follow will be When The Bough Breaks, a psychological thriller that will star Chestnut and Regina Hall.

Bough, directed by Jon Cassar, tracks a professional couple who hire a blue-collar surrogate who develops a violent obsession with the husband. The pic is being produced by New Line founders and Lord of the Rings EPs Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, and Chestnut will exec produce.

Recently, African-American–directed relationship movies have hewed toward either incongruous absurdity (Think Like a Man), overt sentimentality (Jumping the Broom), or, in Tyler Perry's work, both. A thought... given recent project greenlights, where "black cinema" is concerned, I'm reminded of the late 1990s/early 2000s, when rom-coms or rom-drams (romantic dramas) with all-black casts, were popular: Hav Plenty, Love Jones, The Best Man, Love & Basketball, Brown Sugar, Two Can Play That Game, The Wood, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, and on, and on, and on... I'm now wondering if we just might be seeing the beginnings of another period in which Hollywood studio-backed "relationship/romance dramedies" that tell stories about black people, dominate the black cinema landscape - maybe thanks in large part to the success of the film that we might look...

Not really a big fan of some of the films that they picked, and scratching my head as to what on earth made them come up with these films. From time to time, studios release a large box set of films at a fraction at what you would have paid for one stand alone disc. The Matrix set comes to mind, upon it’s initial release and subsequent sequels that were unveiled, it was attached with a nice price tag of about $20-25. Now you can obtain your own copy of the series for $10 at Target.

Now of this particular set, it’s nice to see Secret Life of Bee’s get some love. The film is really excellent and the superb Sophie Okonedo shines as always. It caught me by surprise for I wasn’t expecting much, and went in with the lowest of expectations. Didn’t quite care...
