Although a South Korean remake of Ringu (1998), the film also takes more elements from the original book by Kôji Suzuki than the 1998 Japanese film does.
The only reason this South Korean remake even exists is because at the time Ringu (1998) was first released, South Korea had a ban on Japanese cultural imports, so the film couldn't legally be released there for a theatrical screening. So the Japanese production company behind Ringu teamed up with a Korean production company to make a Korean version of the film for that market, which became The Ring Virus (1999).
