“I once thought that there were no second acts in American lives,” F. Scott Fitzgerald famously wrote, in his notes on The Last Tycoon. To which Cher Horowitz in Clueless would say: “Ugh, as if!”
Nearly 30 years after she spoke those iconic lines, we are witnessing the second act in the career of Alicia Silverstone.
Her Super Bowl ad for shopping platform Rakuten, where she slipped back into Cher’s yellow tartan skirt to recreate the Clueless debate scene, went viral (as did her first TikTok appearance, again as Cher, spoofing the “as if!” scene with her son Bear), returning Silverstone to the top of the pop culture conversation.
In the independent film world, Silverstone has never been hotter. With roles in The Lodge —the 2019 Sundance chiller from Goodnight Mommy directors Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz — and Jennifer Reeder’s new meta-horror film Perpetrator, which premiered in the Panorama section...

There’s very little that is safe about diving shipwrecks for buried treasure. Toss in the pirates, and the plunder can be hardly worth the plunge. New six-part Discovery series “Treasure Quest: Snake Island” takes viewers to the southeastern coast of Brazil, where adventurers seek lost Incan gold worth millions of dollars. Here’s the backstory of the booty, per Discovery: In 1524, a horde of Incan gold — known as the “Treasure of the Trinity” — was stolen. For 500 years, Jesuits priests, privateers such as Thomas Cavendish and mathematician Paul Thiry have all searched the coast of Brazil for this legendary bounty,...

Snakes have had a rough go of it the last couple of days here. First we see one getting eviscerated by a centipede, then we see another getting snared by a orb weaver spider. So let’s take a moment to remember that snakes are not things to be trifled with and they are indeed worthy of our respect.
Illha da Queimada Grande, or Snake island, is a fairly tiny island off the coast of Brazil. Measuring only 430,000 square meters (.16 square miles) it would be seemingly unremarkable if not for its inhabitants. The Golden Lancehead Viper. Not only is the species endemic to this small island, it is one of the world’s most venomous snakes. And we aren’t talking about a few snakes staving off extinction, they thrive here. In fact they are the only species of snake on the island. Local legend has it that there are...

She's got some experience setting up willing singles from her days on Singled Out, and now Jenny McCarthy is going to put those skills to good use -- in the jungle. The actress has signed on to host the second season of Love in the Wild, NBC's competitive reality series that has been described (by me) as "speed dating meets Romancing the Stone."
Or, in terms of its reality TV predecessors, it's like Survivor meets Bachelor Pad meets a little bit of Temptation Island. In other words, perfect mindless summer fun. (And if you don't believe me, just check out my recap of the episode when they went to Snake Island.)
"Everyone knows I've looked just about everywhere except the jungle for love -- I wanted to apply as a contestant and ended up with a job," McCarthy says of her new gig.

So every week - like five people read these. But I find this show delightfully trashy and I think my recaps are funny, so I am soldiering on for the five of you who take the time. I hope you enjoy these. What happened on "Love in the Wild" this week?
*fills up wine glass* And awayyyyyy we go!
Post-Couples Choice
Kym says Steele has a lot of the characteristics she looks for - like muscles and height. Meanwhile, Heather is super pissed she got ripped away from Miles for Adam the Meathead, but Erica is pumped to be back with Miles. Miles? Is like - whatever, they're both hot.
Theresa and Skip hop right into bed and Skip says she is "in your face" beautiful. Um, no. She's fake beautiful. Hope Solo is in your face beautiful. Theresa looks like she had a talented surgeon.
Meanwhile, Brandee and Ben...

I must admit, part of my motive for pushing Love in the Wild so hard in that headline is selfish: I'm recapping this summertime sexy survival series, and like the buxom babes and doofy dudes who volunteered to be on the show, I don't want to go through this alone. It's like they always say, "If a pun falls in the recap, but no one is there to laugh at it, did it really happen?" (No. Because I am like the Tinkerbell of reality TV blogging. I need your laughter to survive!)
But there are other, even better reasons to watch Love in the Wild, besides the resulting snark-fest that will be my recap every single week. And the teaser for this Wednesday's episode (10pm, NBC) illustrates one of them: As the dating pool dwindles, the show will inch ever closer to actually becoming Milf Island, putting the increasingly desperate daters in increasingly crazy situations.
