In a candid interview with The Guardian, actress Rebecca Hall openly revealed her changing views on working with controversial filmmaker Woody Allen, questioning conventional notions about artist accountability.
Hall, who acted in Allen’s films “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” (2008) and “A Rainy Day in New York” (2018), provided a nuanced perspective on how performers negotiate industry controversies. She explained that her earlier public statement about Allen was misunderstood and does not reflect her current position.
“This is a difficult one for me. It’s quite unusual for me to publicly state anything,” Hall told the newspaper. She made it clear that she regards her primary position as an artist, not an activist. “I make the stuff, that’s how I am political,” she explained.

Rebecca Hall said in an interview with The Observer that she does not regret working with Woody Allen despite apologizing once for starring in “A Rainy Day in New York.” Hall has made two movies with Allen: “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and “Rainy Day,” the latter of which she only filmed on for one day.
Hall came forward in 2018 amid the #MeToo movement to apologize for working with Allen. At the time, Allen’s adopted daughter Dylan Farrow was criticizing Hollywood for continuing to work with Allen despite her allegation that he molested her as a child. Hall admitted that Farrow’s new statements on the matter made her rethink her decision to work with Allen again, a choice she had “quickly said yes” to when it was offered because Allen “gave me one of my first significant roles” in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and “I have always been grateful.”

Rebecca Hall is reflecting on her public statement denouncing director Woody Allen six years after the abuse allegations resurfaced.
After Allen’s ex-wife Mia Farrow’s adopted daughter Dylan Farrow wrote an opinion piece for the Los Angeles Times calling out actors who still collaborate with the alleged molester, Hall shared on Instagram in 2018 that she had second thoughts about starring in Allen’s “A Rainy Day in New York.” Hall had previously led Allen’s 2008 film “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”
“After reading and re-reading Dylan Farrow’s statements of a few days ago and going back and reading the older ones – I see, not only how complicated this matter is, but that my actions have made another woman feel silenced and dismissed,” Hall wrote at the time. “That is not something that sits easily with me in the current or indeed any moment, and I am profoundly sorry. Vicky Cristina Barcelona star Rebecca Hall was one of the buzziest names to feature on the BBC’s recent 12-strong drama slate and the BAFTA winner can now be seen in first look images playing a teacher in Element Pictures’ The Listeners.
Adapted by the novel’s author Jordan Tannahill, Hall’s character Claire is tormented by a low humming sound that no one else around her can hear. This seemingly innocuous noise gradually upsets the balance of her life, increasing tension between herself and her husband, Paul, and daughter, Ashley. But despite multiple doctors, no obvious source or medical cause can be found.
Scroll down for more pics, including another of Hall and one of Ollie West (Hamnet), who plays student Kyle and can also hear the sound.
Also starring in the series, which was filmed in Greater Manchester, are Prasanna Puwanarajah, Amr Waked (Ramy), Gayle Rankin, Mia Tharia (Phoenix Rise), Franc Ashman, Samuel Edward Cook, Karen Henthorn, Lucy Sheen (Ping Pong) and Ian Mercer.
Deadline revealed the show’s development last March and Poor Things producer Element is making it with Janicza Bravo – whose past credits include Zola, Mrs America and Them – directing. Tannahill and Bravo are EP-ing alongside Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Chelsea Morgan Hoffmann and Rachel Dargavel for Element Pictures, Rebecca Ferguson for the BBC, and Alice Birch. The series is produced by BAFTA-nominated Ed King. Fremantle is handling global sales.

‘Fantastic Four’ is currently the hottest upcoming MCU movie only a few days ago release date and cast were announced, confirming what we’ve known for quite a while. Pedro Pascal will be MCU’s new Reed Richards, with Vanessa Kirby taking on the role of Sue Storm. The Thing and the Human Torch will be played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn respectively. Filming is expected to begin this summer, and due to the release date being switched, ‘Thunderbolts’ lost its July 2025 spot being moved to release earlier than expected on May 2, 2025. Despite the main cast being confirmed, there was not a speck of news regarding the movie’s possible villain.
We do have some rumors that Silver Surfer, Galactus, and Doctor Doom will make an appearance in the movie, but none of this is confirmed as of now. Speaking of Galactus, a few months ago we reported how...

Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny have joined “Monster” Season 2 at Netflix, Variety has learned.
The two A-listers join previously announced stars Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez in the upcoming season of the anthology series, which will focus on the Menéndez brothers. The season is officially titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story” and is slated to debut later in 2024.
Erik (Koch) and Lyle Menéndez (Chavez) were convicted of the murders of their parents, José (Bardem) and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez (Sevigny), in 1996. Authorities argued the brothers committed the murders to inherit their father’s fortune, while the brothers maintained that they killed their parents after years of mental and physical abuse.
“Monster” was co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. Both serve as executive producers along with Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, David McMillan, Louise Shore, and Carl Franklin. The first season focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

‘Fantastic Four’ is currently the most talked-about upcoming MCU film when it comes to rumors about potential castings. Casting Marvel’s first family is no small feat, and many names were considered for the lead roles.
Now, it appears that the speculation surrounding the casting of Reed Richards has concluded, with reports suggesting that Pedro Pascal has officially taken on the role. Pascal, amidst a packed schedule with the ‘Gladiator’ sequel, Season 2 of ‘The Last of Us,’ and Zach Cregger’s ‘Weapons’ in 2024, initially faced uncertainty about fitting in a Marvel shoot next year. However, recent developments, possibly linked to strikes, have created a scheduling window, and the details are being worked out before the holiday break.

With the early fall festivals Venice, Telluride, and Toronto in the rear view, we have now screened (most) of the key players in the upcoming Oscar race. We will catch up with some key films at the New York Film Festival, though, which is selling tickets fast to such buzzy titles as the September 29 opener, Todd Haynes’ Cannes premiere “May December” (Netflix), starring Best Actress Oscar-winners Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, which could use a fresh boost; Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein marital drama “Maestro” (Netflix), costarring Cooper and Carey Mulligan; Garth Davis’ dystopian “Foe” (Amazon), starring Irish actors Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan with American accents (sort of); and the October 15 closer, Michael Mann’s Venice biopic “Ferrari” (Neon), starring Oscar nominee Adam Driver and winner Penelope Cruz (“Vicky Cristina Barcelona”).

It’s time for Peter Sarsgaard to finally shatter the Oscar glass.
Once upon a time, actor Peter Sarsgaard won the most precursors prizes during the 2003-2004 awards season for his supporting turn in Billy Ray’s “Shattered Glass.” In the film, he plays Charles Lane, a newly promoted editor who suspects one of his revered writers (played by Hayden Christensen) could have fabricated some of his stories. It was a breakout performance in the early days of online Oscar punditry that had everyone buzzing. However, when it came time for the major televised ceremonies, he was only able to muster a Golden Globe nod, then to be followed by shocking snubs from SAG, BAFTA and eventually the Academy Awards.

For Enzo Ferrari, racing was a deadly passion, a terrible joy.
For director Michael Mann, the automaker and his life’s obsession make for briskly entertaining melodrama in a moment-in-time portrait focused around Ferrari and the Mille Miglia race of 1957. Adam Driver, again playing an Italian historical figure after taking on Maurizio Gucci for another major American auteur in Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci,” stars as a grief-driven Enzo Ferrari, working to save his near-bankrupt company while trying to appease his business partner and wife, Laura. She’s played with jilted, internalized rage by Penélope Cruz in her best performance since winning an Oscar for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.” In fact, you could argue that Laura, worn in as an old shoe and run dry by her husband’s dalliances and impulsive decision-making,...

One could make -- and no doubt some resourceful Marvel Cinematic Universe fans have made -- a video about Loki (Tom Hiddleston) hooking up with different characters in the MCU using footage from Hiddleston's non-Marvel projects. The actor had a tragic affair with Rachel Weisz (Melina Vostokoff in "Black Widow") in "The Deep Blue Sea," played one-half of a pair of vampiric lovers along with Tilda Swinton (the McU's Ancient One) in "Only Lovers Left Alive," and starred as Hank Williams in "I Saw the Light," with the Scarlet Witch herself, Elizabeth Olsen, playing the late country music legend's wife. Hiddleston even had a fling with Elizabeth Debicki (Ayesha in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" films) in "The Night Manager," in addition to a non-zero amount of sexual tension with "Captain Marvel" actor Brie Larson in "Kong: Skull Island."

“It’s a great honor to close the esteemed New York Film Festival with ‘Ferrari,'” said director Michael Mann in a statement regarding the news that his film has been named the Closing Night selection for the 61st annual fest on October 13. This will be the North American premiere of the film following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September. It will be released to general audiences in the United States on Christmas Day.
NYFF artistic director Dennis Lim said in a statement, “Michael Mann has made many remarkable movies but perhaps never one as simultaneously thrilling and moving as ‘Ferrari.’ Not just a feat of virtuosity, this is a grand and striking evolution of his career themes and his most deeply personal work. We are honored to welcome him to the festival for what I’m sure will be a Closing Night for the ages.

Kohn’s Corner is a weekly column about the challenges and opportunities of sustaining American film culture.
This week provided a confluence of contentious developments for the film industry, and I’m not talking about the ongoing writers strike. First reviews of “The Flash” dropped ahead of the movie’s release and while they’re definitely mixed, the movie doesn’t seem destined for the dustbin despite its ostracized lead. Ezra Miller’s assault charges haven’t gone away, but that hasn’t deterred Warner Bros. from hurtling toward the theatrical release plan and mitigating Miller’s scandal however it can.
Miller, of course, stayed out of the spotlight while the studio ramped up buzz. Tracking for the June 16 release in the unremarkable $70 million-$75 million range, which means it may not be the summer’s most profitable blockbuster. However, the hype machine ensured that audiences won’t cancel “The Flash” alongside its troubled star.

It’s somewhat surprising that Scarlett Johansson had been making films for over a decade before she first walked the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. Match Point, her initial collaboration with Woody Allen, lured her to the Croisette in 2005.
Johansson took over the lead role in the psychological thriller after Kate Winslet had dropped out. She starred opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who plays a tennis pro in a relationship with Chloe (Emily Mortimer) when he develops feelings for actress Nora (Johansson), who is engaged to his friend (Matthew Goode) who is also Chloe’s brother. THR’s review noted that Allen’s movie marked “the most startling departure in his filmmaking career,” despite his résumé including such serious fare as 1989’s Crimes and Misdemeanors. Ultimately, critic Kirk Honeycutt wrote, the film’s distinct lack of comedic repartee hindered its character development: “Match Point is a story designed more to prove...

Diego Boneta is taking his career in a new direction following his successful turn in Luis Miguel: La Series with the Paramount+ romantic comedy, At Midnight, premiering February 10.
“You won’t hear me sing but you’ll see me dance with my co-star Monica Barbaro,” Boneta said during the film’s TCA presentation on Monday. “We wanted to do something different. Luis Miguel was a big part of my life these past 5 years and it was an amazing experience, At Midnight is its own thing. It’s a love letter to Mexico, as well. There aren’t enough rom-coms shot there in the same vein as Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Midnight in Paris. Mexico is a character in this film and you’ll see it through the eyes of our director Jonah (Feingold).”
At Midnight centers around Alejandro (Boneta), an ambitious hotel manager, and Sophie (Barbaro) a movie star navigating the politics of Hollywood.

Scarlett Johansson is looking back on how her decades-long career impacted her view of herself.
In an episode of the “Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi” podcast (via THR), Johansson reflected on roles in “Lost in Translation” and “Girl With the Pearl Earring,” which she followed with roles in films like “Scoop,” “Match Point,” “The Black Dahlia,” “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” and “He’s Just Not That Into You,” often playing a seductress-type character. Johansson admitted to having to break free of the typecasting and untangle her own identity growing up in the spotlight.

One of the few certainties going into the 2023 awards season is that Cate Blanchett will receive her eighth Academy Award nomination for her celebrated performance in Todd Field’s “Tár,” about the first female chief conductor of a major German orchestra. Blanchett won Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival, and critics have been raving for weeks about her turn as Lydia Tár. Leah Greenblatt says in Entertainment Weekly, “The movie belongs to Blanchett, in a turn so exacting and enormous that it feels less like a performance than a full-body possession,” and Peter Bradshaw says in Guardian, “What a colossal performance from Cate Blanchett.” With the actress poised to become front and center in the upcoming awards season, let’s look back at Blanchett’s seven previous Oscar races.

Michelle Williams‘ defection from the Best Supporting Actress Oscar race to lead for “The Fabelmans” not only makes it anyone’s game now, but it provides more opportunity for a film to score multiple nominations in the category that is friendliest to multiple nominations. A stunning 35 movies have earned more than one bid in Best Supporting Actress and one film is projected to make it 36 this season.
“Women Talking” stars Jessie Buckley and Claire Foy are currently 1-2 in the Williams-less supporting actress odds, ahead of Stephanie Hsu (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) and Vanessa Kirby (“The Son”). Hsu and Kirby also have co-stars in contention in Jamie Lee Curtis (11th place) and former winner Laura Dern (12th), respectively.
If Buckley and Foy make the final five, it’ll be the 10th time this century and the first time in four years a film produced co-star nominees.

After “Midnight in Paris,” Woody Allen will return to the French capital for his 50th movie which he’s described as a “poisonous romantic thriller” with a pair of French stars, Valerie Lemercier (“Aline”) and Niels Schneider (“Love Affair(s))”.
The untitled film, the plot of which is being kept under wraps, will start filming next month and will be entirely in French with a budget in the 10-million range. Allen has described the film to be similar to “Match Point,” in that it would be “exciting, dramatic and also very sinister.”

After wowing a home crowd at the opening night of the San Sebastián Film Festival on Friday, looking dazzling at 48, Spain’s best-known actress, Penélope Cruz, spoke to a packed auditorium at the city’s Tabakalera culture center on Saturday when she was honored with Spain’s National Cinematography Prize.
“It is truly an honor for me to receive this National Cinematography Prize,” said Cruz speaking in Spanish.
“Cinema is and has been my passion since I was a child. Since I dreamed in the living room of my parents’ house of worlds to explore beyond our neighbourhood. The streets of my neighborhood sometimes became sets for incredible stories,” she went on. “My childhood was fantasizing about acting, living life so intensely to be able to encompass many lives through dozens of characters.”

One year after winning her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Bonnie and Clyde” (1968), Estelle Parsons attracted the academy’s attention once again with her work in “Rachel, Rachel” (1969) and thus became the first woman to be nominated for a portrayal of an LGBTQ character. A dozen more supporting females have since followed her example, with just one, bringing home the gold.
Although these types of performances have been recognized more often in the other three acting categories, the women in this particular group have taken just as much care in telling the complex stories of lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. Over the years, they have succeeded in playing their characters respectfully and honestly, whether their identities are proudly displayed, discreetly hidden, or gradually explored.

The 2022 Oscar nominees for Best Actress are Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”), Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”), Penélope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”), Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”), and Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”). Our current odds indicate that Chastain (17/5) will take the prize, followed in order of probability by Colman (39/10), Kidman (4/1), Stewart (9/2), and Cruz (9/2).
Stewart is the only first-time nominee among the five, as each of her competitors has been involved in at least two past acting contests. Kidman’s resume is the longest, consisting of three previous lead bids for “Moulin Rouge!” (2002), “The Hours” (2003), and “Rabbit Hole” (2011) and a supporting one for “Lion” (2017). She triumphed on her second outing and is now looking to become the 15th woman to win a bookend Best Actress trophy.
Colman also has a shot at achieving a second lead victory, having prevailed here three years ago for “The Favourite.” Her second career nomination came...
