“Broadway fans and rock fans have so much in common,” said Crowe, who wrote the musical’s book and lyrics (with original music and lyrics by Tom Kitt). “We obsess over the music, we pore over every possible recording we find, and we treasure those moments when an artist stands on a stage, opens their heart in that most personal way, and creates real magic. Suddenly everything seems possible.
“Almost Famous,” he continued, “has always been about the power of that connection: hearing a piece of music for the first time, looking into a person’s eyes and feeling the electricity,...

It was the final book that was published while Jane Austen was alive back in 1815, and now over 200 years later, we receive yet another version of “Emma” adapted for the big screen (you may remember the 90s version with a young Gwyneth Paltrow). The film is directed by photographer-turned-filmmaker Autumn de Wilde, in what will be her feature-length directorial debut. She has previously worked on short films, including “The Postman Dreams” for Prada, as well as music videos for artists such as Elliott Smith, Jenny Lewis, Spoon, Florence + The Machine.de Wilde is also known for her indie-rock photography, gracing the pages of Spin and Rolling Stone often, while helping shape the visual photographic identity of artists like Elliott Smith and Beck among many others.

It’s not incorrect to call Alex Ross Perry’s Her Smell a musical, it just feels like a simple categorization doesn’t contain all of the levels that the film operates on. It’s also King Lear on downstairs cocaine, a Cassavettes character study, and an epic saga of female friendship. And of course it’s also a subtle period piece, unfolding over the years when Spin magazine reigned supreme, bad behavior was a natural extension of star persona, and grunge and punk excesses converged into a million different stylistic offshoots.
But music remains the film’s connective tissue, whether it is pushed to the background by the impossible behavior of Elisabeth Moss’s demonic antihero Becky Something or returns because of her genius. What makes it all work is that the music feels authentic both to the period and the specific, fractious aesthetic Perry is going for.

There’s a temptation to call “Her Smell” a greatest-hits compilation of the films of writer-director Alex Ross Perry. After all, it’s got the pitch-black humor of “The Color Wheel,” the narcissism of artists behaving badly from “Listen Up Philip” and the spectacle of Elisabeth Moss as a character spiraling out of control, just like “Queen of Earth.”
There’s more than a little nihilism in these films, delivered with those laughs that get caught in your throat, and Perry couldn’t be less interested in how likable or redeemable his characters might be. Something of a cult filmmaker until now, Perry calls things as he sees them, and he would appear to see them through the bleakest perspective possible.
But this is new material from the challenging auteur, one that reflects a deeper sense of maturity, displayed mainly in the idea of the possibility of redemption. Moss’ Becky Something,...

The Flash takes on the villainous Rag Doll!
This The Flash review contains spoilers.
The Flash Season 5 Episode 5
I'm worried that I'm starting to sound more like a broken record than usual, but I'm just gonna lay it out here one more time up front. If "All Doll'd Up" is an example of what an "off" week for The Flash season 5 is going to look like, then I think we are going to be just fine this year. This season has so far successfully balanced its necessary metas of the week with its main story (Barry/Iris/Nora) and its secondary story (Sherloque/Cisco/Caitlin), and I have yet to feel shortchanged by any of it. Even the villains of the week, often the bane of this show when not dealing with more recognizable Flash rogues have worked well in the context of the episode, and this week, the Rag...

Kiana Madeira tells us all about Spin, the newest metahuman supervillain coming to The Flash Season 5.
The Flash will introduce a new villain this week. Kiana Madeira guest stars as Spencer Young, who goes by the villainous name of “Spin” when giving the Flash family headaches. And while Spin is indeed a character from the comics, there are some pretty serious differences.
For starters, this is a gender-swapped character. The comic book version of Spin only appeared in one story, which ran in The Flash #238-241 back in 2008. Created by Tom Peyer and Freddie E. Williams II, Spin was a media mogul named Auerbach, who could manipulate people’s fears and emotions and conjure powerful hallucinations based on them, in part via the news he broadcast on his network.
But in fact, that version of Spin was actually two people. Auerbach was exploiting Edwar Martinez, who could...

Nora Allen might have super-speed just like her pops, but it seems the superheroine will be in need of some saving in an upcoming episode of The Flash season 5. That’s because according to this new synopsis, Barry Allen and Iris West’s daughter from the future is about to become the target of a dangerous new meta in the fourth installment of the current run.
Titled “News Flash,” the episode’s written by Kelly Wheeler & Lauren Certo and directed by Brent Crowell and will introduce Spin, a gender-swapped version of a DC comics foe who’s previously been described as “a young aspiring social media influencer who seizes the opportunity to make herself famous when she discovers there is a new hero in Central City.” The following synopsis for the episode makes it clear that it’s Nora Aka Xs that Spin targets.

In its previous seasons, The Flash has played host to some rather memorable overarching villains. Already, we’ve become acquainted with formidable foes such as the Reverse-Flash, Zoom, Savitar and the Thinker. But soon enough, we’ll welcome the next major threat to Central City, that being Cicada.
So far, this fella has been shrouded by much mystery, but lead actor Grant Gustin thankfully spilled some beans while chatting with Entertainment Weekly, saying the following about his next onscreen nemesis:
“He can dampen other metahuman powers, and we don’t know at first how he’s able to do that. He’s got an edge that no other big bad has ever had. We don’t know who he is. He’s mysterious. In “Her Smell,” Elisabeth Moss tears into the role of Becky Something, a strung-out hellion indie rock star of the early ’90s, like an angry lioness ripping through a slab of raw meat. Just taking on the part of a rock ‘n’ roller represents a major change of pace for Moss, who has tended to play cautious and pensive characters. But in “Her Smell,” Moss doesn’t just “let loose”. She dives headfirst into crazy, abandoned, fuck-it-all grunge narcissism. She plays Becky as a walking train wreck of borderline personality disorder who has elevated herself into a theatrically self-destructive druggie dominatrix. Becky may be an unholy terror, but that doesn’t mean she’s not a star. The stardom and the rancid solipsism are two sides of the same spectacularly damaged coin, and Moss herself has the star quality, and the fearlessness, to pull that off.
As it turns out,...

John Amato, the New York-based CEO of The Hollywood Reporter-Billboard Media Group has resigned his post.
The move comes during a period of realignment as the company’s new owners, Valence Media, arrange properties including the media brands as well as Media Rights Capital, Dick Clark Productions and a stake in A24. Valence co-CEOs Asif Satchu and Modi Wiczyk announced Amato’s departure this morning, saying a search is under way for his replacement.
While a broader restructuring has been ongoing this year at Valence and its properties, the timing of Amato’s departure may not have been entirely accidental. Amato had recently faced criticism from editorial staffers, especially at Billboard, for allegedly interfering with the publication of several stories outlining sexual misconduct claims against his music industry associates. “Avengers: Infinity War” star Letitia Wright took on The Roots’ Black Thought in a freestyle rap battle during her appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.”
The generator popped out words like Disco, Red Lobster and Vibranium, which Wright countered with, “I specialize in that.”
She then rapped: “Check it / Me and Black Thought / Spin your head like a disco ball / Yo, natural disaster / Call your pastor, let him pray for you, yo / Yo, let’s go grab some food at Red Lobster / Roots, tell me how I can win an Oscar / I said Red Lobster / Better tick it off / Ay, yo, yo /And I spit this flow / So free off the dong vibranium got me feelin’ oh so cold / Uh, with this flow/ Ay!”
”Also: ”‘Avengers’

Black Thought was up next, and the generator spit out words Yodel, Toothbrush and Snuffleupagus.
“This is such a mean game,” Wright said after seeing the latter word.
But Black Thought slayed his turn, even managing to incorporate the difficult third word.

“Call my car, I’m going home,” Wright said in response. “That was so good!”
For her final round, Wright had to use the words Hammer, Burrito and Benedict Cumberbatch. This round didn’t go so well, so Fall0n took the mic and did a surprise freestyle rap, finishing it with “you’re my cumberb—-!”
Wright will reprise her “Black Panther” role of Shuri in “Avengers: Infinity War,” hitting theaters on April 27.

“This is such a mean game,” Wright said after seeing the latter word.
But Black Thought slayed his turn, even managing to incorporate the difficult third word.

It seems that the upcoming Men in Black spinoff will be a Thor: Ragnarok mini-reunion. THR is reporting that Tessa Thompson has officially signed on to join the upcoming film. Details are slim at this point on Thompson’s character, but she could potentially join her Thor: Ragnarok co-star Chris Hemsworth to be the main duo in the new spin-off. The new film is said to have a much bigger cast and will be set in the same universe as the original films, however THR also notes that this interpretation could end up being “more of an ensemble piece than a two-hander and will be more global in scope.”
Last we heard, Hemsworth was in talks to star in the new take on the Men in Black franchise, but this new report seems to suggest that the actor is expected to reach a deal soon. F. Gary Gray (The Fate of the Furious,...

Coming off of what showrunner Gary Glasberg has called a “tumultuous” Season 11 — during which two casting changes took place, the seeds were planted for a New Orleans spin-off and the passing of Ralph Waite was written in — CBS’ NCIS is back in “classic” form, Sean Murray tells TVLine.
The Season 12 opener (airing Tuesday at 8/7c) thrusts Murray’s McGee into a Russian hot zone with boss man Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon), paving the way for the introduction of a new adversary. Here, Murray previews all that and more.

SXSW hit a high note with the world premiere of the highly anticipated, and crowd funded, Veronica Mars movie on Saturday, March 8.

Veronica Mars, known for being the largest Kickstarter project, is gearing up for its Friday, March 14 release. The official SXSW premiere took place Saturday afternoon, but there was also a second premiere specifically for the film’s Kickstarter backers. Of the 92,000 backers who gave to the film, every fan who gave $750 or more received two tickets to the fan premiere and after-party. The Kickstarter campaign raised the most amount of money in Kickstarter history (about $5.7 million).
“I’m just shocked that I’m either on this stage or in the film. I thought I was going to have to be the $10,000 backer to have a speaking line,” actor Chris Lowell joked at the premiere.

On Fox's Friday comedy "Enlisted," Chris Lowell plays Cpl. Derrick Hill, the middle brother of three -- Geoff Stults plays the oldest brother, Pete; and Parker Young plays baby brother Randy -- all stationed at the same Army base in Florida.
Luckily for show creator Kevin Biegel, both brotherly love and sibling rivalry broke out almost immediately.
"Kevin had this pipe dream of what he wanted the chemistry to look like," Lowell, decked out in full fatigues on the show's Los Angeles set, tells Zap2it. "He created these archetypes that he was hoping these actors would fall into, and then when the three of us first got together, it was just frightening how quickly we just adopted those roles.
"We quickly transcended our lines and became who we were with each other all the time. Being on set is almost like being stuck in a house when you're growing up with your brothers.

The femmes are fierce in Arrow Season 2 (premiering Wednesday at 8/7c) — and we’ve got photographic evidence.
As previously reported, Oliver’s ex Laurel Lance (played by Katie Cassidy) — blaming the metaphorical “crossfire between two archers” for Tommy’s tragic death — has made it her mission “to bring down the Arrow” aka the last archer standing, says showrunner Andrew Kreisberg. And from the look of one sequence below, she has her prey in sight when she summons a cavalry.

We'd like to thank Detroit's own charming rock duo Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. for lifting our spirits this morning. It's not just their infinitely likable Ep "Patterns" that's got us in a good mood, but a new remix and video for one of their singles that appeals to the nostalgic nerd in all of us.
"If You Didn't See Me (Then You Weren't On The Dancefloor)" was already getting heavy play on our stereo (well, our Spotify playlists), but an alternate version translates it into 8-bit video game music -- you know, like the soundtrack to a super old Nintendo game with graphics that now seem more Stone Age than '80s. According to Gizmodo, the band used a simple plugin to turn the original song into the Midi version.
But there's more to the music than meets the ear, explained Daniel Zott, one half of the band.

I guess that’s why we’re being subjected to so many remakes & reboots instead of new stuff. Darren Lynn Bousman’s (Saw II, III, IV) version of the 1980 Kaufman’s classic stars everyone’s favorite psycho chick with mom issues from the 90’s Rebecca De Mornay (The Hand That Rocks The Cradle) as, you guessed it, the psycho mother to three fugitives who come back home to the family home to hide out. Problem is, it’s no longer their house and the new occupants are in for a night of pure torture and terror. The film also stars Jaime King (My Bloody Valentine, Fanboys, The Tripper, Sin City), Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood), Briana Evigan (Sorority Row, Step Up 2), Alexa Vega (Repo! The Genetic Opera), Shawn Ashmore (Frozen, Hatchet II, The Ruins), Matt O’Leary (Sorority Row, American Bully, Live Free or Die Hard, Frailty), Lyriq Bent (Saw II,...

The question whether Amanda Woodward would return to "Melrose Place" through its spin-off is answered. In its report, Entertainment Weekly, wrote down that Heather Locklear who portrays the character in the original series has turned down the offer.
"There wasn't a way to bring her back that made sense," a source told EW. The studio however, has nothing to say about this. Amanda Woodward, an art director, was initially made a guest star in the '90s series but her cattiness and sharp one-liners have won the heart of the audience. While this character may not appear in The CW's revamped version, Taylor McBride may do. Lisa Rinna who played the character said that she is willing to reprise the role anytime.
Meanwhile, several characters in the spin-off has been filled. Ashlee Simpson will play Violet, Katie Cassidy will play Ella Flynn, Michael Rady will play Jonah Miller and Jessica Lucas will play Riley Richmond.

Ashlee Simpson is making a big transition from singing to acting. The younger sister of Jessica Simpson has been confirmed on board of "Melrose Place" spin-off which is yet to have a title. The series will air on The CW later this year.
She will play Violet, a "small-town girl and recent L.A. transplant who has come to town with a secret" according to MTV. Her character is also described as very manipulative, using her girl-next-door charm to get what she wants, very much like Sandy Harling in the original series.
"I'm thrilled to be joining the cast of 'Melrose Place' and look forward to being a part of its new generation of residents," Ashlee said in a statement.

Biz types fire up Blowtorch
A group of Madison Avenue and Hollywood veterans are joining forces to launch a new media company targeting the young adult market, with content including an upcoming feature-length film from producer Paul Schiff.
Dubbed Blowtorch, the company, which has raised $50 million in financing, will focus on the 18- to 24-year-old market, create and distribute content ranging from feature-length films and shorts to mobile offerings and have an online social community. It will also develop branded entertainment for live events.
Currently in negotiations with theater owners, Blowtorch plans to distribute its content -- including its own films -- to hundreds of screens geographically concentrated in major cities and large college markets.
Its first feature film release, set for a spring debut, is You Are Here, produced by Schiff, directed by Henry Pincus and featuring Bijou Phillips, Danny Masterson and Michael Biehn.
Additionally, Blowtorch has partnered with Vivendi Visual Entertainment to distribute Blowtorch films on DVD.
Schiff, whose producing credits include Date Movie and Mona Lisa Smile, serves as a board member and advisor, while interactive marketing executive Kelly Rodriques is the company's CEO.
