As we recently wrote, the video game industry is having one of its worst years to date. But that downturn apparently hasn’t affected Jogo, the Fortnite development studio unveiled in May 2024 by founding content creators Typical Gamer and Mustard Plays, plus Unreal Editor for Fortnite developer Mark Price.
Over the last few months, Jogo has reportedly made nearly $7 million from its custom Fortnite maps, and just hired a $2 million payroll of experienced game devs to keep pushing out more content.
Typical Gamer (who has 15.3 million subscribers and brings 60 million views a month on YouTube) and Mustard Plays had been “covertly” working on Jogo for about a year when they announced it. The company was born out of their mutual passion for Fortnite–and, for Typical Gamer, that passion started with him uploading his Ws to YouTube years ago.

Image Source: Amazon When the 2009 action film Gamer debuted, featuring a then-emerging Gerard Butler, fresh from successes like 300 and P.S. I Love You, it seemed poised for triumph. The film’s premise was captivating: in a dystopian future, death row inmates battle for their freedom in a ruthless online game controlled by teenage players. It had all the ingredients of a blockbuster—intense action, a thought-provoking concept, and a charismatic lead. However, Gamer stumbled at the box office, failing to resonate with both critics and audiences. What appeared to be a guaranteed hit became a commercial disappointment. Yet, over time, Gamer has cultivated a dedicated cult following through home video and cable broadcasts. Despite its occasionally over-the-top elements, the film remains an exhilarating and thought-provoking experience. Even back then, Gerard Butler recognized something unique in the film. After Sam Raimi’s darkly playful 2009 fright fest “Drag Me to Hell” came out, star Alison Lohman said she faced a question. “It was kind of like: Do you want to be a household name?” she remembers in a recent phone call.
She didn’t. “I don’t think I really really wanted that, to be in the public eye,” she said.
If you had told film fans in the 2000s that Lohman would have essentially vanished from the big screen in 2024, they might have a hard time believing you. The decade offered Lohman an incredible run, starting with her breakout role in 2002’s “White Oleander,” Peter Kominsky’s melodrama, where she played the daughter of Michelle Pfeiffer. She played the love of Ewan McGregor’s life in Tim Burton’s “Big Fish,...

Globoplay, the freemium streaming service of Brazilian media giant Globo, has renewed flagship series “Dissident Archangel” for a fourth season as Latin America’s biggest local streamer is hitting pay dust forging franchises of its own making, led by stylish crime action thrillers which question their own brutality.
“Sessão de Terapia,” Brazil’s equivalent of “In Treatment,” both re-versioning Israeli original “BeTipul,” has also been re-upped for a sixth season.
The renewals come after acclaimed ER drama “Under Pressure,” screened at Toronto, ran to five instalments over 2017-22; “The Others” returns this August and “Rensga Hits!” later this year, with a third season completing production.
Brazil’s First ‘Afroverso’: ‘Anti-Kidnapping Unit,’ ‘Dissident Archangel,’ ‘The Game’
Why Globoplay homegrown franchises are lifting off is another question. The most impactful answer is three series made with AfroReggae Audiovisual, the film-tv offshoot of Grupo Cultural AfroReggae, a Rio-based Ngo created to offer...

Director Oleh Sentsov joined the Ukrainian Defence Forces after Russia’s full scale invasion of the country in 2022. His documentary Real, which world premieres this week at Karlovy Vary, was filmed while he was serving as lieutenant during a battle on the Ukrainian front line in summer 2023.
Real all takes place in real time over 90-minutes within the confines of one Ukrainian-held trench. It doesn’t show the fighting itself – this takes place off screen. Instead, the sounds of battle are all-around as Sentsov tries to organise via the radio the evacuation of part of his unit encircled by Russian troops.

Ukrainian filmmaker Oleh Sentsov’s latest feature Real, his first since the 2021 Venice comp title Rhino, opens with a messy GoPro shot of Ukrainian soldiers taking cover in a shallow trench in the Donbas, the country’s front line in its defense against Vladimir Putin’s invasion of the country.
Across the next 100 minutes, the camera barely moves from this spot. We don’t see any warfare but we hear it. Soldiers are attacked and Russian bombs are launched. The immediate contemporary comparison, in terms of form, would be Jonathan Glazer’s unwavering Oscar-winner The Zone Of Interest. Unlike Glazer’s fiction movie, however, Real was captured unintentionally by Sentsov on his official military helmet camera. He found the footage months later on his laptop.
“I saw a big video file and I thought I should delete it because it was taking too much space on my laptop,” he told...

20 Days in Mariupol, Mstyslav Chernov’s harrowing and Oscar-winning documentary about the siege of the Ukrainian port city in the first days of Russia’s full-scale invasion, brought home the devastation wrought by war on a civilian population. A new documentary, Real, premiering at the Karlovy Vary international Film Festival, shows the reality of the Ukraine war from the soldier’s perspective.
Real begins without explanation or warning. We are suddenly in a foxhole, hearing the frantic voice of a soldier over the radio in another trench, under attack from Russian forces and in desperate need of reinforcements. The voice on our end — that of Real director Oleh Sentsov, call sign “Grunt” — is trying to organize the evacuation of troops under fire and the resupply of his unit. Ammunition is running out, and the Russian forces — uniformly referred to over the radio as “f**kers” — are closing in.

Zack Snyder's 2006 film "300," based on the comic book by Frank Miller, tells a hyper-stylized and not-the-least-bit-historically-accurate version of the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC) wherein 300 Spartan soldiers managed to fend off anywhere from 120,000 to 300,000 soldiers of the Persian Empire for three full days. Both Miller's book and Snyder's film present the Spartans as teeth-gashing, testosterone-spitting, Spam-scented beefcake slabs comprised of nothing but pectoral muscles, testicles, and homophobia. They speak in "Join the Marines" recruiting slogans and disparage anything that's not at least 4000% more masculine than a two-ton bag of Tom Jones' chest hair.
Speaking of chest hair, none of the Spartans have any, happy to parade around their cartoonishly cut physiques as if they all possess a severe shirt allergy. Leading the charge is King Leonidas (Gerard Butler), a man who cannot help but add multiple exclamation marks after every sentence he speaks.

The Assassin’s Creed series has featured several historical eras so far, and Ubisoft seems keen on exploring even more. Mirage was in 9th-century Baghdad, the upcoming Red will be set in feudal Japan, and Hexe is rumored to be set in Central Europe during the 16th-century Roman Empire.
The possibilities seem endless with the franchise, and a cheeky hint from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla‘s senior writer, Alain Mercieca may point to another historical backdrop the series could venture to in the future: Brazil.
The Spanish Conquest Has Yet To Be Explored In The Series
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag slightly touched on the Spanish conquest, but didn’t really explore it beyond that.

Gerard Butler has had a varied career so far, with him playing everything from action leads to rom-com love interests to a singing Phantom of the Opera. But, it has to be said that his most consistently entertaining output falls squarely into the action genre, and as far as Gerard Butler movies go, the action films will always be our favorites… so don’t expect to see The Ugly Truth on this list, but The Bounty Hunter might scrape by. Or maybe not. Let’s see how it goes:
300 (2006)
Perhaps The film that put Gerard Butler on the map for most people, particularly the action and comic book crowds. Butler is in peek physical form here, showing off his bod as the ultimate Spartan warrior and proving that he is indeed quite the leading man. His performance here is commanding, a bit in your face (in the right way), and exactly what the film needed.

One of late Akira Toriyama’s most interesting Japanese manga series Sand Land might have been fairly underrated or neglected in the past. However, that has changed in the past couple of years. The attempt to celebrate Toriyama’s work includes the release of a movie and an anime that has helped push the series.
Sand Land Manga
Another latest endeavor to further expand the reach of the series is the upcoming video game adaptation. The game adaptation of Sand Land is being developed by Ilca. Interestingly, it is the team that worked on last year’s One Piece Odyssey. The upcoming game will explore how Fiend Prince and his companion’s adventures bring life back to a desolate wasteland.
Makers want Sand Land to reach a larger audience
In an interview with The Gamer, Sand Land‘s producer, Keishu Minami, spilled the tea about adapting and expanding Akira Toriyama’s manga.

Japanese manga artist and character designer, Akira Toriyama, suddenly passed away earlier last month. After his death, the popular creator will be receiving his first posthumous tribute in the upcoming Sand Land game. The game is based on Toriyama’s manga series of the same name.
Sand Land Manga
The game is developed by Ilca and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It will bring Toriyama’s manga to life on April 25, 2024, on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC.
The original Sand Land story has been expanded
Sand Land being adapted into a game is not surprising since it is the legendary Toriyama’s work. However, when the news of its adaptation first broke out, it raised some eyebrows. This was mainly because Sand Land is relatively short. It is based on a deliberately brief and linear plot with only 14 chapters.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a lot of things, but gory is not one of them. Despite being an incredible tale of zealous and righteous superheroes saving the day from some or the other deadly enemy, the franchise has largely managed to remain far from what most would associate as ‘gory’ and ‘ghastly’.

While there have been movies and series with extreme and incessant violence, these have largely remained confined to the general display of gruesomeness. Even Avengers: Endgame, which featured one of the biggest showdowns in the entire MCU, remained largely gruesome-less. However, all this would have changed had one scene too dark for the family-friendly MCU had made it to the movie.

Anime fans worldwide were eagerly waiting for the Crunchyroll Anime Awards to roll out. The voting line was stopped on January 27, 2024. There were several big names, including Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, One Piece, Oshi no Ko, etc. After the award ceremony went live, fans saw Jujutsu Kaisen sweep away almost all the awards with eleven wins.
Every alternate category had Jujutsu Kaisen as its winner. Even though the awards are given based on a voting system, there were a few results that the fans were not expecting. Few expected Demon Slayer: Swordsmith Village arc to win the Best Animation Award. Several other candidates were favorites to win. Demon Slayer came out to be a shocker for them.

Sony’s Spider-Man universe has been expanding rapidly, with hits like Venom and Into the Spider-Verse captivating audiences worldwide. However, the recent addition as a standalone film, Madame Web starring Dakota Johnson, failed to impress both critics and viewers. Despite this setback, Sony remains undeterred in its ambitious plans for the franchise.

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

For a comic book movie franchise that has never reached the heights of most Marvel or DC films of the last two decades, "Hellboy" has remained shockingly resilient. To that end, Mike Mignola's beloved character is set for yet another big-screen reboot in the form of "Hellboy: The Crooked Man." This time around, the character will be headed back to the 1950s for a folk horror adventure based on one the most celebrated storylines from the comics.
This will be the character's first film since 2019's "Hellboy." Starring David Harbour, it proved to be a critical and commercial disaster. Be that as it may, Millennium Media is set to try to bring the character to life once again with a lower-budget take on the material. So, when will you be able to see the movie? Who is playing Hellboy? Who is directing this time around? We've got all of...

"Rick & Morty" will not be going the "Solar Opposites" route in its recast of Justin Roiland; at San Diego Comic-Con today, executive producer Steven Levy assured fans that the roles previously filled by the series co-creator and star will now be played by other actors who are "sound-alikes" (per Variety). The actors in question haven't been announced yet, but Levy also says the team is nearly done figuring out who will take on the role of mad scientist Rick and his teenage grandson Morty. "We are closing in on the end of our process of the recast, but I do want to say it's gonna be great," he told the assembled crowd at today's panel.
Adult Swim ended its relationship with Roiland in early 2023 after news broke that he was facing charges of domestic battery and false imprisonment. The charges were later dropped, but other accusations against the writer...

Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov has sustained shrapnel injuries while fighting in the Zaporizhzhia region in southeastern Ukraine.
The director, who spent more than five years in prison in Russia for opposing its annexation of his native Crimea in 2014, reported his injuries on his Facebook page, where he regularly posts updates about his life at the front.
He said his unit had come under artillery fire while out on its first sortie of the week.
“Three injured, mostly fractures. Already pulled out of my face, the small things in my hand and foot will stay with me forever. The other guys are fine too – Zaporizhzhia doctors know their stuff, thank you!,” he wrote.
Sentsov, whose filmography spans Rhino (2021), Nomery (2020) and Gamer (2011), joined Ukraine’s voluntary Territorial Defense forces the day of Russia’s invasion on February 24, 2022.

Fresh off the $1 billion-plus success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the next big-deal video game adaptation has dropped its first trailer and poster. Rather than attempt to make a workable fictional narrative from a series of racing video games, the filmmakers have opted to adapt a true story connected to the games.
The film, penned by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin, and helmed by “District 11” director Neil Blomkamp, is based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough (played by Archie Madekwe in the film) whose video game skills won a series of Nissan competitions and allowed him a shot at being an actual race car driver. “From Gamer to Racer,” the tagline states and it’s an interesting narrative that would be intriguing even sans the IP surrounding it.

Scottish actor Gerard Butler has been headlining some of Hollywood's biggest, most successful, and most talked-about blockbuster releases for three decades. If any 2000s action star has a claim to A-list status, it's him. However, it still feels like not enough people discuss his acting talents.
For most of his career, Butler has prioritized a kind of unapologetically corny and popular cinema that often skews ... controversial, to say the least. Good and campy fun is Butler's bread-and-butter -- whether it's action, romance, adventure, or a musical. The key to appreciating him as a performer is to understand this fact and fall in love with the easy-watching pleasure these movies provide. However, it's also worth noting what deeper dimensions Butler brings to these roles, too. So here's an appraisal of the 12 best Gerard Butler movies. For the unacquainted, these picks will help viewers fall in love with the man's unique brand of crowd-pleasing entertainment.

The BBC has said that a radio debate about Jk Rowling broke editorial rules after a presenter failed to properly challenge claims that the Harry Potter author is transphobic.
During a feature on Radio 4’s Pm show in February, host Evan Davis allowed Stacey Henley, a transgender woman, to criticize Rowling’s “nasty views” during a discussion about video game Hogwarts Legacy.
Henley, editor-in-chief of The Gamer, accused the author of pushing “transphobia” and said she was active in campaigning “against trans people.”
Davis said Rowling “wouldn’t say she’s transphobic,” but this attempt to balance the conversation did not come until minutes after Henley’s initial comments. The BBC received 199 complaints about the exchange.
In a ruling on Thursday, the BBC’s Executive Complaints Unit (Ecu) said the radio show “did not meet the BBC’s editorial standards of impartiality.” The Ecu considered the matter resolved, however, as...

A reboot feature of “Hellboy,” titled “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” will begin production in March, Millennium Media announced Saturday.
Brian Taylor, who co-directed the “Crank” films and “Gamer” with Mark Neveldine and solo directed the 2017 horror comedy “Mom and Dad,” will helm the picture. Mike Mignola, the creator of the “Hellboy” comics, co-wrote the script with Chris Golden.
The story will follow Hellboy, the summoned demon turned reluctant hero, as he teams up with a rookie agent to uncover a secluded witch community in 1950s Appalachia. The script draws from the comic “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” which debuted in July 2008.
Millennium Media first acquired the rights to the property in 2018. The banner had previously worked with Summit Entertainment to produce a 2019 feature adaptation of “Hellboy,” starring David Harbour. Casting announcements for the upcoming reboot will be made in the coming weeks.

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony/$19.99) scored a second of what will be likely many weeks atop VOD charts. That comes after the film reached $800 million in domestic box office and it’s about to enter its fifth month in theaters.
Little else changed this week, with fewer films than usual finding positions on all three iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu charts. “Sing 2” (Universal/$19.99), high on all charts again, has spent more than three months at a $19.99 or higher. Like “Spider-Man,” it still ranked in the top 10 this weekend.
“Dog” (United Artists/$19.99), a much more recent release and #7 in theaters, was the third across-the-board placer. The only new entry of note was “Panama” (Saban/$6.99), an action thriller about an arms dealer in the country during the invasion. It costars Mel Gibson, with Mark Neveldine directing. It placed on two charts.
Four Best Picture nominees showed up on at least one chart.
