Italy’s Adler Entertainment and 39Films have teamed up on an innovative IP incubator called Writing Box that will bring together Italian and global screenwriters with the goal of germinating feature films, TV series and docs for the international market.
The initiative – being launched at Rome’s Mia market next week – is the brainchild of Adler’s Marco Colombo, Mattia della Puppa and Italy-based Argentinian producer Alfredo Federico, founder of Italy’s 39Films. Federico’s credits in the Latin American movie milieu include 2008 Berlin Golden Bear winner “Tropa de Elite” and Guillermo Arriaga’s “The Burning Plain.”
Adler Entertainment is a Milan-based distributor of indie titles such as Sydney Sweeney-starrer “Immaculate” that has branched out into production in recent years. Their productions include “Mogwai: If the Stars Had a Sound,” the doc about cult Scottish band Mogwai that has travelled widely on the fest circuit this year.

Jennifer Lawrence is hilarious. Sure, she made her name as an actor in dead-serious indie dramas (The Burning Plain, Winter’s Bone), franchise tent poles (The Hunger Games trilogy, those X-Men 2.0 blockbusters), the kind of nerve-shredding films that fall somewhere between horror and thriller (House at the End of the Street, Passengers), and whatever category you care to slot Mother! into. Filmmaker David O. Russell figured out early on that Lawrence was a perfect fit for his skewed, neurotic dramedies, and it’s impossible to think that Silver Linings Playbook and...

It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.
If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

Welcome to this weeks review of Aew: Dark, the first episode of the show to eminate from Universal Studios in oprlando. Yes, Aew is bringing studio wrestling to their brand Finally making a distinction between Aew’s various programmes.
Match #1: The Butcher & The Blade def. Rosario Grillo & Hunter Knott
My Thoughts: Good god The Butcher looks even more vicious than before his injury. Along with his tag team partner The Blade he decimated their opponents Rosario Grillo & Hunter Knott, getting the pin in definitive fashion in under Two minutes, showing that the Butcher is definitely back and back in business!
My Score: 2 out of 5 Match #2: Anna Jay def. Ashley D’Amboise
My Thoughts: Anna Jay’s first singles outing after her injury saw her swiftly defeat Ashley D’Amboise, who, like a lot of talent of Dark and Elevation, is imporving week in week out. To be fair to...

On “Tierra,” one of the most arresting moments of Bomba Estereo’s new album Deja, vocalist Li Saumet offers a bleak list of crimes against the planet: “They took away the sea, sky, and wind,” she sings. “They took the wind from us, they burned the jungle, they sold the lands, they put out the sun.” But then she reassures us that they have not taken away our dreams since we can write history from now on. “Tierra” is also a catchy track with an irresistible beat. Mexico-based, El Salvador-born Tatiana Huezo has quickly emerged in the world of documentary as one of its most talented and thought-provoking directors of her generation.
As she finally jumps from documentary to fiction with the upcoming “Noche de Fuego,” a strong big fest candidate, the director delivered a three-hour masterclass at this week’s Swiss doc fest Visions de Réel.
Drilling down on her award-winning features and short films, the director expounded on her own understanding of filmmaking as a personal journey in a talk that took a chronological take on her career. Five key points made by Huezo:

Having studied at Mexico City’s celebrated Ccc film school, Huezo initially worked as a Dp, battling to find her place as one of Mexico’s then few women cinematographers -a story shared by so many women in the industry. “It was a male job in a male world,...

There are few brighter stars in Hollywood than Jennifer Lawrence. Ever since she broke through with her Academy Award nominated performance in Winter’s Bone, and especially once she starred in The Hunger Games, the A-list was a foregone conclusion for her. Lawrence is young, ambitious, talented, and a refreshingly honest presence in the industry. With a new starring role in Red Sparrow hitting this week, now is the perfect time to remind ourselves of just how good she really is. Below you’ll find her best performances, at least in my humble opinion, with a little bit about how she became the toast of tinseltown. Suffice to say, Lawrence is an icon, plain and simple. We can jump right off with her ten best performances to date: 10. House at the End of the Street 9. Red Sparrow 8. Passengers 7. Like Crazy 6. Joy 5. The Beaver 4. American Hustle 3. Hot button topic: terrorism. Idea for a movie: Terrorists and… a spy! On the run! So comes the first trailer for Unlocked, a new double-crossin’, guy-on-the-inside thriller from Michael Apted (who has helmed episodes of Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex, not to mention the James Bond film The World is Not Enough).
Led by Noomi Rapace, she plays aa fearless agent who, after a realization about her agency, must take matters into her own hands. Luckily, she has a friend she can trust in Orlando Bloom, as they sneak around and smash heads in the name of pure national security.
While Rapace is an incredible lead, the film will have to do a lot to stand out from a pack that is about as overcrowded as they come. See the trailer below, along with a poster and synopsis, for the film that also stars Michael Douglas, John Malkovich, and Toni Collette.

Based on the great, homonymous novel by Kazuhiro Kiuchi, and having quite a large budget, since it was backed by Warner Bros, “Shield of Straw” had all the prerequisites for being a masterpiece.
A deadly game of hide-and-seek against the whole population

This time, however, the victim is the granddaughter of a Japanese tycoon and very powerful man, named Ninagawa. One of the reasons we still love Jennifer Lawrence is because she lacks a proper filter on her mouth. While out promoting a film (and she has appeared in several over the past few years), Lawrence is prone to saying whatever thought crosses her mind. But she usually does it in a way that.s moderately self-deprecating, playful, funny and charming. However, that.s not always the way things come out. Jennifer Lawrence is making the rounds, at the moment, in support of X-Men: Apocalypse, where she once again plays Mystique. On The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the painfully candid actress recalls a time when she made a joke in front of journalists . just Jen being Jen! Only, it went way too far, and she eventually paid the price. While promoting the 2008 film The Burning Plain, in which she co-starred with Kim Basinger, Lawrence attended a press conference in...

It's not always clear when Jennifer Lawrence is telling the truth. In fact, when she appeared on NBC's The Tonight Show Monday, Lawrence recalled once lying to a pool of reporters during her first-ever press junket for the 2008 movie The Burning Plain. At the time, director Guillermo Arriaga and co-star Charlize Theron joined the newbie actress at the event. "Kim Basinger wasn't there. We were doing an international press conference and somebody said, 'Where is Kim Basinger?' I just leaned in the microphone and was like, 'You didn't hear? Kim died.' There was like a beat while it got translated and then it was [mayhem]," she said. "I got ripped off the stage and thrown into media...

Grim Girl: Pacquet-Brenner’s Adaptation Brandishes Relentlessly Contrived Twists
“I have a meanness in me,” warns the omniscient narrator of Dark Places, as voiced by a steely Charlize Theron portraying an adult in perpetual arrested development thanks to devastating tragedy from her youth she’s been milking ever since as a means of livelihood and escape. Unfortunately, the film is unable to correctly capture the complexities of such a characterization and it’s exactly these types of sterling nuggets from Gillian Flynn’s source novel which fall with graceless thuds throughout Gilles Pacquet-Brenner’s adaptation of Dark Places.
The sort of thriller which could be euphemistically referred to as ‘labyrinthine,’ this cinematic re-tooling bears certain similarities to Pacquet-Brenner’s last high profile film, the adaptation of Tatiana de Rosnay’s celebrated novel Sarah’s Key (2010), a mystery tinged tragedy drained of its potency for a celluloid brassiere specializing in the...

Lawrence was a first-time Best Actress Oscar nominee for her first major film role: a near-destitute, young Ozark woman looking for her missing drug-dealing father in Winter's Bone, Debra Granik's generally well-received indie drama. Winter's Bone also earned nominations for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (John Hawkes), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Debra Granik and Anne Rosellini; based on the novel by Daniel Woodrell). Jennifer Lawrence's competitors in the Best Actress Oscar race were: Annette Bening for Lisa Cholodenko's The Kids Are All Right. Michelle Williams for Derek Cianfrance's Blue Valentine. Nicole Kidman for John Cameron Mitchell's Rabbit Hole. Natalie Portman, the eventual winner, for Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan.

For this week’s new spotlight piece, I wanted to again take a look at one of the biggest A listers in the industry…Jennifer Lawrence. I’ve written about her once or twice before, but as a legitimate megastar who’s also still a bit of an up and comer, I figured she was perfect for this piece once again. She’s someone who’s powerful in Hollywood, grounded in a way that most young stars aren’t, and above all else…one of the best actresses in the business, bar none, with an Oscar on her mantle to prove it. Lawrence consistently does interesting work and is more than worth checking in on here and there. As such, she’s perfect for the spotlight today, so let us dive in. Lawrence first got her start, like many young up and comers, on television. Guest spots on Cold Case,...

Danielle Darrieux turns 97: Darrieux has probably enjoyed the longest film star career in history (photo: Danielle Darrieux in ‘La Ronde’) Screen legend Danielle Darrieux is turning 97 today, May 1, 2014. In all likelihood, the Bordeaux-born (1917) Darrieux has enjoyed the longest "movie star" career ever: eight decades, from Wilhelm Thiele’s Le Bal (1931) to Denys Granier-Deferre’s The Wedding Cake / Pièce montée (2010). (Mickey Rooney has had a longer film career — nearly nine decades — but mostly as a supporting player in minor roles.) Absurdly, despite a prestigious career consisting of more than 100 movie roles, Danielle Darrieux — delightful in Club de femmes, superb in The Earrings of Madame De…, alternately hilarious and heartbreaking in 8 Women — has never won an Honorary Oscar. But then again, very few women have. At least, the French Academy did award her an Honorary César back in 1985; additionally, in 2002 Darrieux and her fellow 8 Women / 8 femmes co-stars shared Best Actress honors...

The trailer for Guillermo Arriaga’s lead anthology film, Words With God, has debuted.
Words With God is based on a concept by Guillermo Arriaga ( Amores Perros, 21 Grams, The Burning Plain) with original music by Peter Gabriel (“Why Don’t You Show Yourself?”) and shaped into its current form by Nobel Prize award winner Mario Vargas Llosa.
The faith themed anthology is directed by filmmakers Guillermo Arriaga, Hector Babenco, Bahman Ghobadi, Amos Gitai, Emir Kusturica, Mira Nair, Hideo Nakata, Warwick Thornton and Alex de la Iglesia. Along with Guillermo Arriaga, Alex Garcia and Lucas Akoskin (who both founded Bn Films) are producing the film.
In Words With God, each director recounts a narrative centered around human fragility, as well as environmental and cultural crises involving specific religions with which each has a personal relationship; including early Aboriginal Spirituality, Umbanda, Buddhism, the Abrahamic faiths, Hinduism, and Atheism. You Gotta See Her: Palloaro’s Debut Trite Yet Lyrical Odyssey of Familial Discord
Any familiarity with the Euripides’ classic Greek tragedy will have you already guessing what the outcome of Andrea Pallaoro’s directorial debut will yield, but that’s not to say it doesn’t take a quietly lyrical journey of meditative visuals to get us there. Neither a modernization nor necessarily influenced by the classical piece the title invokes, Pallaoro instead seems to use it as the sole dramatic flair to material that’s intended to be a multi-focal portrait of an imploding familial unit, and despite a predictable finale manages to lull us into a hypnotic state where passion and heartbreak are conveyed as quietly as whispering winds through haze filled fields.

Lawrence Oscar interview backstage at the 85th Academy Awards (seen above with Best Supporting Actress winner Anne Hathaway) In the press room backstage at the 85th Academy Awards ceremony, this year's Best Actress winner Jennifer Lawrence had to answer questions from the assembled reporters. Her response: "I don't think that we're going to stop until we get rid of the stigma for mental illness." I think we can all agree it’s been a rather good year for movies; we have three billion-dollar grossers, all of a high quality, showing studio films don’t have to be dire; we’ve had some great indies, some real stinkers…so let’s take a moment to honour the actors and actresses who really helped make this year of cinema so memorable. Think of it as this writer’s New Year’s Honours List, even though I am not an inbred German geriatric with the power to grant Knighthoods. So, in no particular order, the 12 heroes of 2012 at the cinema, as well as my predictions for next year’s heroes, and the biggest loser of the year.
1. Jennifer Lawrence
Bit of an obvious one, but the charming Kentucky native has sky-rocketed this year, after breaking out with Winter’s Bone, The Burning Plain and X-Men: First Class.

Last year, picking the woman of the year was a no-brainer. We chose Jessica Chastain, who started 2011 as a virtual unknown, and ended it as the star of critical favorites like "The Tree Of Life" and "Take Shelter," box office hits like "The Help" (for which she earned an Oscar nod), all while impressing with diverse roles across a slate of films including "The Debt," "Coriolanus," and "Texas Killing Fields." And this year, we went with another young actress who also showed tremendous range, with acumen both at the multiplex and arthouse. Yes, it's Jennifer Lawrence. The actress, who turned 22 in August, has had one of the most meteoric rises we can remember. Her feature film debut, in Guillermo Arriaga's "The Burning Plain," came only four years ago. Two years later, she exploded as a result of her starring role in Sundance flick "Winter's Bone" -- playing the steely,...

We don't see Kim Basinger up on the big screen all that often anymore. In fact, it was two years ago that she last popped up in the Zac Efron vehicle "Charlie St. Cloud." Before that movie was another two year gap, with 2008 seeing her in three pictures: "The Burning Plain," "The Informers" and something called "While She Was Out." But the actress is coming out of the woodwork once again, for a movie that will likely be more worth her time than most of her recent resume. Basinger has come aboard the solid ensemble of Paul Haggis' next film, "Third Person," joining Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde, Mila Kunis, Adrien Brody, Casey Affleck and James Franco in the picture. She'll be playing the wife of Neeson's character who is a writer of some kind. She then gets taken in Budapest....oh wait, wrong movie. While the plot details have...

I was going to kick off by saying “It’s been some time since Kim Basinger really graced our screens” — but that’s technically not true. While she hasn’t made an onscreen appearance in about two years — itself not such a long time — it was in the relatively successful Charlie St. Cloud, and that only came a few years after parts in The Informers, The Burning Plain, and The Sentinel. Even if you didn’t see those, there’s a fair chance you’ve heard of them. Shouldn’t that count for something?
And although I can’t say if One Square Mile might some kind of reintroduction into mainstream cinema, the actual film doesn’t sound half-bad. In following last fall’s The Skin I Live In, Pedro Almodóvar has started to roll cameras on the next romp, I’m So Excited, an airplane-set return to his comedic roots that boasts both an alumni-filled cast and a fun premise. (In which people on a crashing plane share their secrets when they think death is knocking at cabin door.) While shooting must have only just started, the director’s Facebook page (via ThePlaylist) has brought a smattering of new photos — a few of which appear to come directly from the film — along with some comments from the man himself.
First, you can read that:
“The ‘passengers love’ tells the story of a group of people trapped in a single set, and disconnected from the outside. Writing the script began as a whim and ended up comedian as an ensemble comedy, moral, oral and unreal, or unrealistic. I tried to leave reality aside,...

We first knew it as The Brief Lovers; then The Standby Lovers; and, now, it’s called I’m So Excited. Annoying though these sorts of changes always, always are, I’m more bothered by the incongruity between the second and third title — just not enough to truly care.
That’s not the story at hand, either. What you should really know — and what a press release primarily tells us — is that Sony Pictures Classics have bought domestic rights to Pedro Almodóvar‘s next picture, I’m So Excited, thus continuing a long-held, well-regarded relationship that the company and filmmaker have maintained over several films. In this new comedy, a bevy of airline passengers confess deep, personal secrets when their plane appears to be on the verge of crashing. (Or a Nervous Breakdown.) [ComingSoon]
