What's with this series having nothing more than decent to just good episodes, but then right out of nowhere we get a masterpiece like this? This was such an incredible backstory, most of this episode was nothing more than just dialogue, and yet it's incredible. Episode 18 was also amazing with most of it just being dialogue as well. I'm starting to notice that this series is really good at making episodes that have only dialogue, which is definitely not easy for the average series to accomplish, but this series seems consistently amazing when it comes to it. This might not be the best series out there, but the peaks of this series are no joke. This was an incredibly well-written backstory, and I'm starting to see why so many people love Subaru's character!

Everyone has said this already. Subaru might be one of the best written character in modern anime, and all of that is explored in a genre as potent, yet under-utilized as isekai.

I cried like a baby, which is a very tough feat since I'm very emotionless, so the fact that it did already speaks wonders about anime and especially this episode.

It also was very unexpected.

Given Subaru's cynical and self-hating attitude, you'd expect a very sad backstory to him, but this episode takes a look back into the past and surprises me of where he came from.
