We might be adults or quite old now, but when it comes to Harry Potter movies, the child in us is always ready to say Wingardium Leviosa or Expelliarmus! Growing up, we all wished to be at Hogwarts to fight the dark goblins and have the magic wand. That’s the amount of craze that the Harry Potter movies hold. They created a world of magic and mystery that captivated all of us all these years.

The first season of A24 and Prime Video's smash-hit animated series "Hazbin Hotel" ended on February 2, 2024, and while the creative team is hard at work on season 2, the show's popularity hasn't decreased. "Hazbin Hotel" earned the largest global debut viewership for a new animated title on Prime Video, surpassing other hot commodities like "Invincible" and "The Boys Presents: Diabolical." The series doesn't boast the same recognizable IP as its contemporaries, but that hasn't stopped it from becoming a phenomenon. In the months since the season's end, convention circuits have shown that "Hazbin Hotel" has become one of the most popular shows for cosplayers to emulate, fanart floods social media feeds on the daily, but thanks to the death of the monoculture, the popularity often feels like it exists in a vacuum.
I've previously described "Hazbin Hotel" as adult animation, but too edgy for the constraints of something like "The Simpsons.

Emmy voters are now halfway through final balloting for this year’s awards, making decisions about which drama and comedy series, limited series, talk series, variety series and specials, structured and unstructured reality programs, reality competition shows, animated programs, documentary and nonfiction programs and game shows they like best.
And, oh yeah, they’re also picking their favorite TV movies, although they probably won’t have to think too long or too hard about what seems to have become the Emmys’ least consequential category.
It wasn’t always like that. The Outstanding TV Movie category has produced some notable television, including “Death of a Salesman” with Lee J. Cobb, the ultimate tearjerker “Brian’s Song,” the shocking “Special Bulletin”and 21st century standouts “The Gathering Storm,” “Recount,” “Grey Gardens,” “Behind the Candelabra” and even last year’s winner, “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.”

How do you get The Roku Channel to compete with the likes of Pluto TV? Maybe you buy Pluto TV. And Paramount+. Hell, buy the whole company while you’re at it.
The Wall Street Journal on Thursday reported that Seagram’s heir Edgar Bronfman Jr., the chairman of Fubo, has not yet given up on acquiring control of Paramount Global. And he’s recruiting: In his ragtag group are Fortress Investment Group, “Baby Geniuses” producer Steven Paul, and Roku, the number 1 manufacturer of streaming devices.
Wait, Roku — where did you come from?
A combination could make some sense here. For starters, Paramount+ is available on Roku platforms already. And they’re probably already hanging out at the Walton Family Christmas parties: Both Paramount and Roku have deals with Walmart. Ad-supported Paramount+ is included with a Walmart+ membership, while Roku is the operating system in Walmart’s own branded TVs.

Sandra Oh and Awkwafina proved to be a terrific duo this year in their hit Hulu telefilm “Quiz Lady.” The flick follows the pair as estranged sisters who must reunite and work together in order to pay for their mother’s gambling debts via the game show that one of them is obsessed with.
Oh and Awkwafina subvert expectations with their performances here with Oh playing the zany, wild sister and Awkwafina turning in a subdued performance as the awkward, restrained, quieter one. These dual performances have become the foundation of overwhelmingly positive notices for “Quiz Lady.”
Charles Bramesco (Indie Wire) opined: “The odd couple… shares a sensational chemistry, building on the base amusement of seeing Oh let her extension-laden hair down and Awkwafina crimp the straight-man character into weird new shapes.”

“The Substance,” Coralie Fargeat’s body horror film starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, will be the opening night film in the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness section, TIFF organizers announced Thursday.
The Mubi film will make its North American premiere at TIFF after having its world premiere in the main competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The extremely graphic and gory film, in which Moore’s character undergoes a treatment that creates a younger and “more perfect” version of herself, won the Best Screenplay prize from the Cannes jury and stirred up awards talk for Moore’s unhinged performance.

Ridley Scott isn't exactly a stickler for historical accuracy. Though the director is known for overseeing a fair few historical epics, from the original "Gladiator" to "Napoleon," the famously crotchety filmmaker also doesn't shackle himself to the real-life historical record. With "Napoleon," for instance, Scott decided researching the titular emperor's life in books was entirely unnecessary. Unsurprisingly, then, the Joaquin Phoenix-led epic contained a few striking moments that, in reality, sort of happened but didn't.
This is nothing new for Scott. Back in 2000, "Gladiator" debuted with Russell Crowe in the lead role of Maximus. But while Scott hired several historical advisors to ensure much of the film was as true to history as possible, Maximus himself was not a real-life person. Rather, he was a conglomeration of various historical figures. So, while he has an obvious respect for history, Ridley Scott is clearly a director first and foremost, which...

Ten years ago this week, “Weird Al” Yankovic’s Mandatory Fun became the first comedy album to top the Billboard album chart since Allan Sherman’s My Son, the Nut in August 1963. The years following that triumph have been a busy time for Yankovic, marked by multiple world tours, a stint as the bandleader on Comedy Bang! Bang!, the recording of “The Hamilton Polka,” and the release of Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, a brilliantly twisted biopic starring Daniel Radcliffe that racked up many awards, including an Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie.

The Emmy category for Best TV Movie has had a renaissance in recent years, with more high profile projects being exclusive to the medium. In this golden TV era, the level of talent on screen and behind the camera is at an all-time high – showcased best by the level of competition here and Best Limited Series. Once so niche that they were a single combined category at the Emmys, the fields seem to get stronger and stronger every year. As a result, the list of this season’s potential TV movie nominees is incredible. Leading the pack (for me) is Amazon Prime Video’s “Red, White & Royal Blue.”
An adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s New York Times bestselling novel, the film depicts the rivalry and courtship between Henry (Nicholas Galitzine), a prince of England’s royal family, and Alex (Taylor Zakar Perez), the son of an American presidential candidate.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, as the eligibility period closes Friday, we discuss two last-minute limited/TV movie hopefuls.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re at the end of 2024 Emmys eligibility, and not without some last-minute entries. This week, Netflix added “Eric” to its stable of limited series contenders — joining fellow May release “A Man in Full,” as well as “Ripley,” “Griselda,” “Painkiller” and presumed frontrunner “Baby Reindeer.” Meanwhile, over at HBO, “The Great Lillian Hall” is here, a TV movie that puts Jessica Lange in contention for Best Limited/TV Movie Actress. It’s funny: Neither of these projects feels like they connected with critics and the late drops are always dicey when there are too many shows to watch in the first place.

From Whitney Houston to Elvis, there is no shortage of iconic singers who inspire sweeping films that dramatize their life stories. No matter the genre, cinematic features have captured the careers of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley to country singer Jonny Cash. Most recently, Back to Black (2024) launched in theaters to capture the life and musical career of Amy Winehouse.
Still other films in the works will add to the canon of singer biography movies, like Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown and nephew to Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle the late Michael Jackson in Michael.

Sling Freestream leads the way with nearly 600 channels, but is quantity the most important thing for Fast platforms?
When streaming services first began to offer free ad-supported streaming TV (Fast) channels, many viewers didn’t see the point. Traditional TV listings were already packed with channels that never attracted much in the way of viewers, so why clutter up the digital spaces with little-watched channels as well? But streaming providers have stacked free ad-supported services with a wide range of desirable content, and now these platforms draw tens of millions of viewers per month to watch live and on-demand content. As demand has grown for this type of free streaming option, so has the supply; a new report from the FASTMaster shows that there are nearly 2,000 individual Fast channels available in the United States alone, and The Streamable’s experts will steer you to the right platform for your viewing preferences.

Unfrosted, written by, directed by, and starring Jerry Seinfeld, is the latest installment in the comedian’s bizarrely fascinating post-Seinfeld career. After returning to stand-up comedy and dipping his toes into the advertising space, a joke shared with friend Steven Spielberg would lead him to produce and star in DreamWorks Animation’s infamous Bee Movie; before successfully monetizing hanging out with his friends and getting coffee for 11 seasons of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee.
And now, Seinfeld is taking another, more involved stab at filmmaking with, of all things, a satirical fictionalized retelling of the creation of Pop-Tarts in the same vein as the slew of “product biopic” movies from last year such as Air and Blackberry, but given the comedic-leaning creative liberties of something like Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

Adapted from Georgia Hunter‘s 2017 book of the same, the story follows the Kurcs, a Polish Jewish family torn apart by WWII. It’s a difficult watch but creator Erica Lipez has crafted a gripping, vital narrative with Lerman at the center of the show. He plays Addy Kurc, the middle child who pursues a career as a composer in post-war Paris. Critics agree, Lerman is a revelation in this role.
Proma Khosla (Indie Wire) stated: “As Addy, Lerman is siloed from the other siblings for almost the entire series, but never waivers in his portrayal of someone sustained by hope and eventually in the haze of grief.”
Maggie Levitt (Collider) observed: “Lerman is another clear standout in the series, though his performance is more subtle...

Tobias Menzies has become one of our most reliably excellent actors of late. Classically trained, he had an extensive theatre career in his native England during the noughties and early 2010s before he rose to prominence with roles in “Game of Thrones” and “Outlander.”
Menzies’ profile then increased further thanks to his lauded portrayal of Prince Phillip in “The Crown” and his stock has again risen thanks to his role as another major historical figure in Apple TV’s “Manhunt.” The acclaimed limited series follows the death of President Abraham Lincoln (played by Hamish Linklater) and the subsequent 12-day manhunt for assassin John Wilkes Booth (Anthony Boyle).
Menzies stars as Edwin Stanton, the Secretary of State and personal friend of Lincoln who headed up the hunt for Booth. Menzies proves himself capable of carrying this compelling show entirely on his own. His complex, gruff portrayal of Stanton is what makes the series soar,...

Before you make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best TV Movie, take a look through our photo gallery featuring the telefilms most likely to land in this year’s lineup. As it stands, Peacock’s “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” (a continuation of the eight-time Emmy-winning 2000s comedy series “Monk”) is comfortably leading the race.
“Mr. Monk’s Last Case” would be the first Peacock movie ever nominated in this category, as would “Genie” or “Shooting Stars.”
Last year, Hulu’s “Fire Island” and “Prey” were both passed over in favor of The Roku Channel’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” but the streamer could soon avenge those losses with “No One Will Save You,” “Quiz Lady,” or “Self Reliance.”
Netflix – which won this award for three “Black Mirror” installments (2017-2019) as well as “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square” (2021) – can now achieve its fifth victory with “Scoop” or “Unfrosted.”

David Dastmalchian was raised in a religious household where “everything was ‘the Devil’s work’” and he was constantly told not to open myself up to anything evil that could come in. “Fast-forward to me as a grown-up and I’m telling my wife not to order a cursed Ouija board off the Internet,” the actor notes. He’s also hosted seances, been published in “Fangoria,” penned the graphic novel series “Count Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter” for Dark Horse Comics and served as the brand ambassador for a line of caskets.
And, of course, starred in the hottest horror movie of the year as the lead in “Late Night With the Devil.” The indie feature from brothers Cameron and Colin Cairns was released by IFC in theaters, where it’s already made a robust $10 million. And as of today, it’s available to stream on the horror network Shudder.

Three years ago, when Conan O’Brien retired from late-night, it was a very different world. Max was known as HBO Max. TBS was still releasing original series. David Zaslav had just been announced as the CEO of what would become Warner Bros. Discovery. Change was in the air, and now many, many changes have happened.
But Conan remains a constant. Before “Conan” (the late-night series on TBS) welcomed its last guests, its host had already launched a wildly successful podcast, “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend.” He soon sold his booming digital media business to SiriusXM for $150 million, produced stand-up specials (“Chris Redd: Why Am I Like This?” and “Gary Gulman: Born on Third Base”) and podcast series (from Rob Lowe and Andy Richter), and acted in everything from “Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain” and “Murderville” to “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” and “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On.

If there was one rock ‘n’ roll star in the world of pop art, it was Andy Warhol. He crossed paths with classic rock stars numerous times and even painted the cover of one of John Lennon’s albums. The record in question has an interesting reference to John’s childhood. In addition, the “Imagine” singer revealed what he thought of Warhol and one of the painter’s contemporaries.
The cover Andy Warhol made for a John Lennon album is stunning
In 1986, six years after John’s death, his estate released the album Menlove Ave. It was named after the street John lived on as a child. The record gave fans a peek into who John was. It includes some of his lesser-known songs as well as covers of classic hits such as “To Know Him Is to Love Him” by The Teddy Bears and “Angel Baby” by Rosie and the Originals.

"Star Trek: Voyager" debuted on January 16, 1995, and was the first series on a brand-new Paramount-owned network, the Upn. Like the network, "Voyager" struggled quite a bit, famously floundering in the ratings and unable to secure the kind of cultural cache held by "Star Trek: The Next Generation," a series that had gone off the air in 1994. The premise was promising enough: a brand-new, super-advanced Starfleet vessel, the U.S.S. Voyager, was whisked clear across the galaxy by an ultra-powerful alien being searching for a mate. When the alien died, the Voyager was stranded in the Delta Quadrant, some 75 years away from Earth. Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) would guide her crew back home, using limited resources and unable to call Earth for backup.
Initially, the reaction was merely warm, with Trekkies focusing more attention on the contemporaneous episodes of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." In early seasons, the "Voyager" showrunners...

Barbie came into the 2024 Grammys with 11 nominations and went home with three of them.

In a conversation with reporters in the press room after their win, Eilish explained that she and her brother had hit a bit of a roadblock with their songwriting before getting the opportunity to write for the film’s soundtrack.

Selena Gomez Can’t Seem to Quit Social Media
“Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I’ve done it thousands of times.” The words of Mark Twain work surprisingly well when applied to Selena Gomez’s relationship with social media. The most followed woman on Instagram, fresh from a viral moment at the Golden Globes where she whispered something to Taylor Swift, announced to 428 million Ig followers on Jan. 9 that she’s “off social media for a while” to focus on “what really matters” (with a pic of music producer boyfriend Benny Blanco). Her fans were less than shocked because it’s far from the first time the 31-year-old has put her phone face-down: She did it in 2018, in 2020, in February and again in November after receiving backlash over comments about the conflict between Israel and Hamas. “I’m done. I don’t...

What makes the results of Monday night’s 75th Emmys particularly interesting to me is that they come at the end of a season unlike any other, in which virtually all traditional Emmy campaign tactics — as in, famous people shaking hands, kissing babies, doing interviews, appearing on FYC panels, etc. — were removed from the equation.
Even during the Covid-impacted 2020 and 2021 Emmy seasons, talent did press and made appearances, albeit remotely, which unquestionably shaped the viewing and voting priorities of TV Academy members. But the 2023 Emmy season — nomination voting for which ran June 15-26, final voting for which ran Aug. 17-28 — had none of that, at least after the Writers Guild went on strike on May 2, followed by SAG-AFTRA on July 14, with the former not resolving until Sept. 27 and the latter until Nov. 9.
Therefore, it seems to me, voter considerations that led to the nominees that we got were as follows:...
