When it came out back in March 2024, Parish was expected to leave that indelible mark on its audiences worldwide as it played along the themes of drama set deep in the world of crime fiction thriller. Developed by Danny Brocklehurst and aired on AMC, it had that gripping plot that held the potential to capture viewers’ attention in its talons.
Set in a world of crime and horrors, the series encompassed the story of Gray Parish (played by Giancarlo Esposito), a good man but not one without a troubled past, who gives up his life of crime to become a family man. But when his son is violently murdered, old habits tend to return, sending Gray on a relentless quest with moral discretion but dangerous consequences.

Now that 2024 has come to a close, it’s official, Netflix once again handed out the most cancellations in the calendar year – though at this point, I don’t think anyone will find this surprising. While the streaming platform has gotten better as the years have gone by in giving shows final seasons and the chances to establish themselves with audiences, the streaming platform continues to have some of the biggest cancellation rates in the business and 2024 was no different.
In total, Netflix canceled 16 shows in 2024 while also handing six additional shows their walking papers with final season orders which are about as close to cancellations as you can get the only difference being that those lucky six shows will get to actually wrap up their runs with proper sendoffs. So when you combine the two groups, Netflix decided to end a whopping 22 shows in 2024 be it by canceling them directly or ordering final seasons.

In the green settings of rural England, Nicholas Parish’s “The Old Man and the Land” emerges as a cinematic experiment that challenges traditional storytelling. This unique drama centers on a mute farmer navigating the twilight of his life, weaving a complicated narrative about inheritance, family dynamics, and the weight of ancestral trauma.
Parish creates a captivating portrait that defies traditional cinema. He employs an unusual technique in which the protagonist never speaks. Instead, the story is told through voicemails, phone calls, and harsh visual depictions of agricultural life. Audiences see the regular rhythms of agricultural work through the eyes of an anonymous old farmer, while the voices of his adult children tell a deeper, more chaotic family story.
The film evolves into a profound meditation on land, legacy, and the unseen tensions that boil beneath rural serenity. Parish provides a unique immersive experience by removing traditional conversation and character interactions,...

AMC has officially cancelled Parish after just one season. Parish is a crime series featuring Giancarlo Esposito as Gray Parish, a man who owns a car service who ends up seeing his world changed when he picks up a Zimbabwean gangster. In addition to Esposito, Parish featured a leading cast including Zackary Momoh, Paula Malcomson, Skeet Ulrich, Ivan Mbakop, Bonnie Mbuli, Arica Himmel, and Dax Rey. Esposito is best known for playing Gus Fring in the acclaimed series Breaking Bad.
As per Collider, Parish has been officially cancelled after just a single season. AMC announced the cancelation in a kind statement wherein the network praised "the creative talent involved and the performances they were able to bring to the screen." The network coupled this praise with the statement that they are "unfortunately unable to proceed with a second season." AMC assured audiences, however, that they would still be able to watch Parish season 1 on AMC+.

Parish will end after its first and only season, AMC confirmed Thursday.
The show, loosely based on British drama series The Driver, starred Giancarlo Esposito, Zackary Momoh and Paula Malcomson, among others, and premiered in March.
“We’re so proud of Parish, and thankful for the creative talent involved and the performances they were able to bring to the screen, starting with the remarkable Giancarlo Esposito, Skeet Ulrich and the entire cast,” AMC said in a statement. “We are unfortunately unable to proceed with a second season, but Season 1 will remain available on AMC+ to fans who want to relive this thrill-ride-of-a-series and those yet to discover it.”
The Hollywood Reporter‘s review of the show praised Esposito’s performance, calling him “an emotionally volcanic leading man,” but criticized most other aspects, saying “it’s full of extended sequences that you’ve seen done better countless times.”

It’s been crickets on the fate of Parish since the series’ first season came to a close on May 5, 2024. The crime drama’s six episodes aired from late March to early May 2024, but it notably was not included in the 13 AMC shows licensed to Netflix in a one-year deal that began on August 19. Other AMC shows that aired new seasons in 2024, like Interview With the Vampire and Monsieur Spade, were included. Parish has yet to be renewed or canceled. Will the Giancarlo Esposito drama get a second season? The star certainly hopes so. Parish follows Esposito as the titular Gracian “Gray” Parish, who’s pulled back into the crime world after the murder of his son and the collapse of his luxury car service he owns in New Orleans. The getaway driver-turned straight-and-narrow businessman is pulled back into his former life of crime for one last job with former...

The billionaire Andy Ronson (Clive Owen) — a technological genius who serves as an antagonist and, ultimately, tragic figure in the FX limited series “A Murder at the End of the World” — may bear a more-than-passing resemblance to certain tycoons of our time. But creator, director and star Brit Marling had an older inspiration in mind.
“If anything, I think we were pretty influenced by reading about Disney, and the idea of Walt Disney as a figure who made real leaps in original thinking,” Marling explains in a conversation with Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. “A Murder at the End of the World” is certainly critical of technology, but Marling, who conceived the show with Zal Batmanglij, also wanted to present a more nuanced narrative than resolving its classic whodunit plot with a single diabolical billionaire.

Hands down, Giancarlo Esposito remains the busiest man in show business. Over the past year he’s starred in AMC’s “Parish” (which he also executive produces), Netflix’s “The Gentlemen,” Disney+’s “The Mandalorian,” MGM+’s “Godfather of Harlem,” Netflix’s “Kaleidoscope” and voiced Max’s “Harley Quinn.”
And on the film side, his recent gigs include “Abigail” and the upcoming “MaXXXine” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis.”
“I wrote in my notes last week, ‘I’m the busiest motherfucker,’” Esposito laughs. “I know. It was a very weird note, just to remind myself that all my dreams are coming true… When you start to make more movies and television and do a bunch of things all at once, you realize, ‘I’m doing what I love to do every day.’ It makes it more of a meditation. Giancarlo Esposito is often the best thing about whichever project he appears in. That was certainly the case, for this writer, at least, in “The Mandalorian,” his TV series “Parish,” and, now, the Guy Ritchie Netflix show “The Gentlemen.”
This one is a spin-off of the successful 2019 movie of the same name, which starred Matthew McConaughey and a terrific Hugh Grant. The show focuses on Theo James‘ aristocrat, who inherits his family estate only to find that it is the home of a weed empire. What follows is a classic Ritchie affair, with gangsters and crime members in pursuit of the empire. Esposito appears as a suave, menacing American billionaire named Stanley Johnston, who wants to buy the estate from James’ aristocrat. Esposito once again wields his mesmerizing voice to full effect, delivering the best monologues in the show, in which he calls British aristocracy “the original gangsters.” Critics agree,...

A galaxy far, far away keeps getting bigger and bigger thanks to Disney+ expanding the “Star Wars” franchise with several TV shows, such as “The Mandalorian” and “Ahsoka,” to go alongside their film output. Giancarlo Esposito was Emmy-nominated for his villainous work in “The Mandalorian,” for example,” while last year’s Best Drama Actor Emmys lineup included Mando himself, Pedro Pascal, who was cited for “The Last of Us.” With this in mind, here are eight “Star Wars” actors who could be nominated at this year’s Emmys.
Rosario Dawson — “Ahsoka”
Dawson will be looking to secure a nomination for her work in “Star Wars” itself. She plays the live-action version of Ahsoka Tano, a fan-favorite character who originated in the...

I think I can say this on behalf of the entire collective of reporters who cover television: Nothing makes us groan more than when a series star or producer refers to the setting as another “character” in their show.

Could it be that the cliché is right? It certainly feels that way in some of this year’s Emmy contenders, much to the credit of the production designers and location scouts who make that happen. For example, watching Giancarlo Esposito take control of his life through any means necessary in AMC’s “Parish” is powerful — but the fact that he...

Exclusive: Director Cameron Van Hoy has entered production on The Prince, a new feature drama penned by Pulitzer Prize winner and Oscar nominee David Mamet. Scott Haze (Old Henry) leads a starry ensemble that also includes Nicolas Cage (Pig), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), Giancarlo Esposito (Parish) and Andy Garcia (Ocean’s Eleven).
The Prince chronicles an addict’s tumultuous odyssey through the high-stakes world of power, pleasure, and pain on a transformative journey toward recovery.
While unconfirmed, we’re told by multiple sources close to the project that the lead character Parker, played by Haze, is inspired at least in part by Hunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, whose abuse of drugs and alcohol is well documented — including in his 2021 memoir Beautiful Things — and who was found guilty Tuesday in Delaware of three felony counts related to the purchase of a gun in 2018.

Giancarlo Esposito doesn’t seem to have a lot of trouble finding work. The character actor extraordinaire boasts more than 200 credits on his IMDb page going back to the 1980s, and just in the past few years he’s recurred on “The Mandalorian,” “Godfather of Harlem,” “The Boys” and “Better Call Saul.” He’s a performer whose reputation precedes him, his screen presence consistently magnetic and oft intense. His career was supercharged by his portrayal of chicken entrepreneur and drug kingpin Gus Fring – first of “Breaking Bad” and then on “Saul.” Of his portrayal of Fring, he says, “I wanted to create a character who was formidable but who was (also) polite and graceful and who took care of his business family in a certain way. It re-enthused me that there was a complete and very complicated character that I could develop with this team of writers. I recognized what...

Characters from different worlds or genres offer a fresh dynamic. Opposite roles can create engaging and enjoyable relationships. Differences in experience and genres can enhance on-screen chemistry.
There are some great dynamic duos in the world of TV who just make sense together, but some pairings are more unexpected, but they have undeniable chemistry together. TV relies on the characters and their relationships to create strong, compelling stories. If two characters have a natural chemistry, and they display a genuine connection, this can stand out in their performance and the overall quality of the show.
However, while some pairings make perfect sense, such as two comedy actors, or actors who have appeared in various roles together, the unexpected pairings can make something potentially even more interesting. AMC Networks’ plans to submit the zombie spinoff “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” as a limited series for the Emmys have been killed.
The cable network had announced plans to submit the six-episode spinoff, created by Scott M. Gimple, Danai Gurira, and Andrew Lincoln, for outstanding limited or anthology series at the Primetime Emmys. However, Variety has learned exclusively from two sources with direct knowledge that the show is ineligible to submit in the category.
In 2021, the Television Academy defined what constitutes a limited or anthology series, stating that the story must be resolved within its season without any ongoing storylines. This criteria affected past winners, such as the second season of “The White Lotus,” which was required to compete as a drama due to Jennifer Coolidge’s recurring character. According to the Academy’s ruling at the time, “the reappearance in a subsequent ‘season’ of one character...

Giancarlo Esposito looked back at his financial struggles this week, recalling a time when he considered ordering his own murder in pursuit of a life insurance payout for his family.
During an appearance on SiriusXM’s Jim & Sam show, Esposito said he went through two bankruptcies before landing Breaking Bad, as well as a foreclosure on his home. At his lowest, he told the hosts, he considered suicide.
“The first thing that had me think there was a way out, was my wife’s father — God rest his soul — Pops McManigal was in insurance,” Esposito said. “So I asked [my ex-wife], I started poking around, ‘How much am I insured for?’ And then she told me. Do they get the bread?’ My wife had no idea why I was asking this stuff. I started scheming. If I got somebody to knock me off, death by misadventure, [my kids] would get the insurance.

“Gray, it’s been a long time.” That casual greeting – delivered with a menacing edge by Bradley Whitford in his first appearance as a new character, Anton, a powerful Louisiana businessman with strong criminal ties – gave us chills when it capped off the taut third episode of AMC’s six-part crime-thriller Parish. “Anton is probably the most dangerous of all the characters because he knows Gray [Giancarlo Esposito] better than anybody. Ask yourself, who are the people that can get under your skin the most? TV Insider checked in with the duo to see how the charming and wily Anton will add to stoic Gray’s pile-up of miseries. The family man is grieving his son’s death and fighting the failure of his luxury car service business.
