In the history of Japan, the Edo period, or, as designated by the contemporary shogunate, the Tokugawa period, spanned two and a half centuries and was marked by several contrasting aspects. On one hand, the extremely isolationist approach of the nation allowed it to be completely hidden away from the rest of the world, contributing to a certain oriental enigma and the creation of a police state. On the other hand, the approach allowed the nation to reach the zenith of cultural innovation and maintain peace and prosperity during a period when the rest of the world was being ravaged by the pangs of European colonialism. Both of these aspects are beautifully highlighted in the recently released Netflix original series, Blue Eye Samurai, created by Amber Noizumi and her husband Michael Green, known for his work as a writer on movies like Logan and Blade Runner 2049.

Investigation Discovery (ID) has teamed up with Khloe Kardashian for a docuseries about “Twisted Love” and also greenlit a Jeffrey Epstein special as the first in its upcoming, tentatively titled “Who Killed…” series.
“Who Killed Jeffrey Epstein?” will feature exclusive interviews and in-depth investigations into new clues about their titular subjects. When it comes to Epstein, the project will explore his “seedy underworld, privileged life and controversial death.”
“This story has everything: famous names, wealth, sex, tragedy and suicide — or murder,” said Henry Schleiff, group president of Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel and Destination America. “Indeed, when deaths as high profile as Epstein’s come to light, people have questionsand that is why ID will seek to provide viewers with additional new information — and, perhaps, answers.”
Epstein was first accused of trafficking young women to his Palm Beach estate in 2005 but escaped relatively unscathed from the law enforcement system.

"You've been a little... disconnected lately." Gravitas Ventures has debuted an official trailer for a film titled Blue, an indie dramedy made by the wife and wife duo Gabriela Ledesma & Callie Schuttera. The two co-wrote the screenplay together, while Ledesma directs and Schuttera plays a character based on Gabriela's own experiences earlier in life. Based on true events, a young woman struggles to piece her world together after a botched suicide attempt. The film has a bit of dark humor, presenting a raw and honest look at the struggles of life and how hard it is to keep it all together. Starring Callie Schuttera, Shaw Jones, Judith Scott, Laura Harrison, Chelsea Lopez, Johnny Loquasto, Jennifer Daly, Todd Stroik, Aubrey Manning, and Vanessa Sawson. This probably won't connect with everyone but it's worth a look anyway. Here's the official Us trailer (+ new poster) for Gabriela Ledesma's Blue, direct from YouTube:...

Céline Sciamma and Abdellatif Kechiche both arrived at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival with new films, but the reception to “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” and “Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo” could not have been more different. While Sciamma’s “Portrait” was hailed as a masterpiece and one of the festival’s best achievements, Kechiche’s “Mektoub” was derided as a new rock bottom for the Palme d’Or winner behind “Blue Is the Warmest Color.” Both films became calling cards for the highs and lows of a filmmaker’s gaze. Critics championed the female gaze of “Portrait,” while Kechiche’s male gaze became a point of controversy just as it did before on the first “Mektoub” film and “Blue.”
In a new interview with France’s So Film magazine, Sciamma defends Kechiche’s male gaze and calls out both film critics and moviegoers for creating a cinema in which the...

Difficult second album syndrome? Nah, Pokémon Gold and Silver are brave and brilliant...
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
With a bit of time to kill before Pokémon Sword and Shield come out, Den of Geek is taking a stroll down memory lane and replaying all the classic games in the iconic RPG series. For our second trip back into the Poké-experiences of yore, it's time look back at Pokémon Gold and Silver.
Continuing the trend that Pokémon Red and Blue started, Pokémon Gold and Silver launched in Japan first (in 1999) before hitting Australia and the Us (in 2000) before finally arriving in the UK and the rest of Europe (in 2001). The games were immensely popular, with their sales exceeding 23 million units, according to a stat that did the rounds in 2010.

Pokémon Go isn't the only critter-stuffed game that doesn't break the bank...
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
The Pokémon franchise is in rude health at the moment, with the Detective Pikachu movie faring well at the box office and the Sword and Shield RPG games looming tantalizingly on the horizon. But if you've already seen the movie and can't wait for those games to come out, you might want to turn your attention to some alternative Pokémon experiences. How about some free Pokémon games, for instance?
You can't argue with a freebie, after all. If you can't afford a console game or just fancy taking part in some inexpensive fun, you've come to the right place. All you need is a smartphone with enough storage space to hold some new software. And if you can meet those two requirements, the Pokémon franchise has plenty to offer.

Here’s what happens when the need to see takes over and I start pulling DVDs off the shelf with only my dark heart as a guide…
The sleazy, claustrophobic, catch-as-catch-can transience of the carnival world, with its ever-changing roster of freaks, geeks, disappointed con men and women with few options, all clinging to shreds of dignity and eyeing a better life while digging themselves deeper into the one from which they want to flee, seems a naturally cinematic subject. Yet there are surprisingly few movies that have ever captured the symbiotic push-pull of vibrant show-biz fakery and dark personal obsessions that lurk behind the curtain, beyond the barker’s call. Somewhere between the boy’s wish-fulfillment of Toby Tyler and the mind-wrenching funhouse mirror reflections of Tod Browning, Tobe Hooper and Rob Zombie, Edmund Goulding’s film of W.L. Greshman’s Nightmare Alley (1947), from a script by Jules Furthman...

Pokémon Red and Blue kicked off the iconic RPG franchise back in the 1990s, but do they still hold up?
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
While we wait for more details about Pokémon Sword and Shield, Den of Geek is delving back into Pokémon history to have some critter-catching RPG fun. We've decided to revisit all the core games in the franchise, which means taking a trip back to where and when it all began: the iconic Kanto region and the year 1996.
Pocket Monsters Red, Pocket Monsters Green, and Pocket Monsters Blue launched in Japan in 1996. Unless they were savvy enough to import a copy from afar, gamers in Australia and the United States had to wait until 1998 to get their hands on the game, and those of us in the UK and Europe had to hold on until 1999. Phylicia Rashad will make her Broadway directing debut next spring with Charles Randolph-Wright’s play Blue, featuring music by Nona Hendryx, producer Brian Moreland announced today.

Though Blue will be Rashad’s Broadway directing debut, she has directed productions of four August Wilson plays, including Gem of the Ocean at Seattle Repertory Theatre, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone at the Mark Taper Forum, and Fences at both the Long Wharf Theatre and the McCarter Theatre. She’s also directed at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre and New York’s Signature Theatre.

The show, which takes place October 14th at Los Angeles’ Walt Disney Concert Hall, will feature the singer-songwriter recreating the 1971 masterpiece — one of her favorite albums of all time — with her longtime band.

There truly is no other anomalous phenomenon quite like Pokémon. Since its humble beginnings with Pokémon Red and Blue released for Nintendo’s Game Boy all the way back in 1996, developer Game Freak has remained behind the franchise wheel, releasing critical and commercial hit one after the other. But the mainline games, despite being an integral component of Pokémon‘s fame, are but part of a whole that contributes to its global appeal. Another core pillar that continues to attract audiences in their millions two decades on is the ongoing anime series.

From Chaka Khan to James Taylor, an all-star lineup perform some of Joni Mitchell’s finest songs to mark her 75th birthday
This event cinema presentation offers a chance to see one of the two tribute concerts held last November in Los Angeles to honour Joni Mitchell. The revered singer-songwriter, now 75, fully deserves to be feted by an eclectic lineup of artists channelling her music. Fans should be warned, however, that although she can be seen here in occasional cutaways enjoying the show – and younger versions of her pop up in archive clips, photos and painted self-portraits – because of ill health she no longer performs.
So viewers have to make do with arresting, occasionally straight-up but mostly fascinating reinterpretations of Mitchell’s songs, performed by guest singers and an all-star house band. Arguably, the best performances here take the song in a new direction and transmute it with sheer force...

Pokémon aren’t the only recognizable faces popping up in the latest “Detective Pikachu” trailer.
Diplo appears in a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo in the new trailer for Warner Bros.’ live-action Pokémon film.

“I wanted to choose Blake [Shelton] from the get-go, but something inside my gut was telling me to go with Kelly [Clarkson], so I had to listen to that,” Voice winner Chevel Shepherd tells Rolling Stone of choosing her coach. Now, as the titleholder of the show’s 15th season, she’s glad she did. Following Tuesday night’s finale, Clarkson, the newest Voice coach, officially earned back-to-back victories, with her mentorship of season 14 winner Brynn Cartelli, and now Shepherd.
In this season’s pool of contestants, Shepherd proved herself to be a tough contender.

Chevel Shepherd could pull off the biggest upset in the history of “The Voice” and win season 15 over frontrunners Kirk Jay and Kennedy Holmes, according to 22% of the viewers of Monday’s finale. They give the edge to this talented teen from New Mexico because she is the only singer from Team Kelly Clarkson still in the competition. Those backing Chevel remember that coach Kelly is the reigning champ on “The Voice.”
At her blind audition, Chevel impressed Kelly, Jennifer Hudson and Blake Shelton with her cover “If I Die Young.” She opted to work with her idol, Kelly. Chevel was then pitted against two other artists on Team Clarkson. In each instance Kelly went with her, first in the Battle round when she and Mikele Buck sang “You Look So Good in Love and then in the Knockouts where her performance of “Travelin’ Soldier” outdid that of Sarah Grace.

Kairos is composed by circumstances capturing the most elusive part of our lives, half-fate, half-luck, activated by human agency. Celebrated Basque director Julio Medem, in his filmmaking strokes, has a way of taming this crucial notion of time, transforming chance encounters into kairotic human interaction. His orchestration of character development over the course of a lifetime in Lovers of the Arctic Circle (1998) or a night, as in Room in Rome (2010), represents the magical transformative power of intersubjectivity and intimacy. There can’t be many pairs of hands as safe as Don Letts’s when it comes to music knowledge. A cultural polymath who has been front-and-centre of the music scene for over 40 years – as a musician, DJ, radio presenter, Grammy Award-winning music video and film director. You’d be hard-pressed to find a series with a more diverse fanbase than Pokemon. Having been on the market for over 20 years, the franchise’s audience has become so large and varied, that you could pick three Pokemon fans at random, and end up with three completely different people who all love different things about the series. Personally, I consider myself a longtime fan who holds the first two generations of games up on a pedestal, though I realize I’m probably in the minority here. Show up at your favorite retail store on the launch day for a main entry in the series, and you’ll be swarmed by fans young and old, who are eager to get their hands on developer Game Freak’s latest iteration. And then, of course, you have the Pokemon Go crowd, which itself is a hodgepodge of casual and nostalgic gamers alike.

Nickelodeon’s Blue’s Clues reboot has a host and a new title. TV newcomer and Broadway actor Joshua Dela Cruz will lead a new generation of preschoolers in the search for clues with the beloved energetic girl puppy blue on Blue’s Clues & You (fka Blue’s Clues). Production begins this month in Toronto.
The network announced in March that it was bringing back the animated preschool classic with a 20-episode series order that would have a “refreshed signature look.”
In Blue’s Clues & You, puppy Blue invites viewers to join her and live action host Dela Cruz on a clue-led adventure and solve a daily puzzle. With each signature paw print, Blue identifies clues in her animated world that propel the story and inspires viewers to interact with the action.
The casting of Dela Cruz was the result of an opening casting call that began last April in Southern California.

Keith Collins, who has died of a brain tumour aged 54, was the long-time companion of the film-maker and artist Derek Jarman. A practical, dependable and vigorous man, Keith believed his greatest achievement was keeping Derek alive long enough to finish the film Blue (1993). His presence in the last eight years of Derek’s life enabled the film-maker to make an abundance of late work including painting, writing and the creation of his garden at Prospect Cottage in Dungeness, Kent.
Born in Lanchester, County Durham, Keith grew up in Burnhope and went to Greencroft grammar school in the neighbouring village. His father, Stanley, was a bus driver who went on to work in a tyre factory, while his mother, Valerie (nee Robson), gave piano lessons to local children.
