Brendan Fraser's dangerous stunt during The Mummy knocked him out but didn't stop his dedication to the role. Fraser insisted he wear a noose during a stunt, rather than let a dummy do it. However, it knocked him unconscious for ten seconds. The Mummy remains popular to this day, sparking a franchise that could still be continued today.
As The Mummy turns 25, director Stephen Sommers reflects on the franchise and a dangerous stunt that knocked out star Brendan Fraser. The Mummy opened in 1999 to mediocre reviews, but it grossed over $400 million worldwide and spawned two sequels, a reboot, and a spinoff. The sequel, 2001s The Mummy Returns, also directed by Sommers, received even lower reviews but still made $443 million worldwide. The spinoff, The Scorpion King, starring Dwayne Johnson, didnt perform as well, scoring a 41% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics and only making $180 million worldwide.

Sommer felt insulted by Tom Cruise's 2017 Mummy remake as nobody reached out to him for consultation. Sommer's action-driven Mummy reboot in 1999 was a box office hit. Tom Cruise's 2017 Mummy movie failed critically and commercially, halting the planned The Dark Universe.
Stephen Sommers, the director of the 1999 The Mummy remake, reveals that he felt insulted by Tom Cruises 2017 reboot of the horror movie franchise. The original movie dates back to 1932 with the Universal Boris Karloff-led movie. The franchise received multiple reboots, including from Universal Pictures and Hammer Film Productions. Stephen Sommers brought the franchise to the modern era with three feature-length movies and, more recently, a Tom Cruise-led reboot that was meant to kick off The Dark Universe.
25 years after the release of Stephen Sommers The Mummy reboot, the veteran director revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he felt insulted by the release of the 2017 The Mummy remake which Alex Kurtzman directed.

Universal Monsters films are classic cultural landmarks that are still considered some of the best in their genre, mixing gothic horror with campy fun. Many of the sequels and crossovers in the Universal Monsters franchise are not as strong or original as the original films, and some are considered the worst in the series. The Abbott and Costello crossovers inject comedic elements into the monster franchise, offering a fun and entertaining twist on the iconic characters.
With several monster films in development, it's a fantastic time to revisit the classic Universal Monsters films, though they drastically range in quality. From the 1930s to the 1950s, Universal Pictures developed thirty monster films, starting with Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, and The Invisible Man. I greatly looked forward to the ‘sequel’ rebirth of Hammer Horror into today’s age. It is important to note that those of us who delighted in the Halcyon days of Hammer Studios with the likes of Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, Sherlock Holmes, The Reptile, The Gorgon, and many others stalking around opulent yet budget-conscious sets with blood, gore, and low-cut necklines may be in for a bit of shock. Those types of films meaning the ‘Old’ Hammer Studios formula do not work for audiences of today. That is why Joe Stephenson Directed Doctor Jekyll (2023) is pivotal to the new ‘John Gore’ era of horror filmmaking, to that end it does not disappoint new and old on many fronts.

If there's one thing I've learned from watching countless horror movies and episodes of "Scooby-Doo," it's that you don't mess with mummies. It's a superstition that's held so strong over the years that even when visiting museums, I tend to respectfully steer clear of the ancient Egypt exhibits. Myths about the latent powers of mummified royals have been around for ages, and many of them have been unfortunately influenced by stereotype-heavy depictions of Egypt and surrounding African and Middle Eastern cultures. Regardless of how much the world now knows about ancient Egyptian burial rituals, when most American moviegoers picture a mummy in their mind's eye these days, they're as likely to think about a Universal Pictures movie monster as they are the real thing.

2023 has felt like things are starting to get back on track for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic. The year has seen some fantastic films and box office numbers hitting some great heights, in particular that phenomena that was the Barbie and Oppenheimer weekend. It’s clear for the first time, in a long time that cinema is starting to look in good shape once again. While there are many films that are yet to be released in the UK that have made many other best of the year lists, here are my 10 favourite films realised in the UK in 2023.
10. Wonka (Paul King)
For many perhaps the biggest surprise of the year, but for fans of Paul King it comes as no surprise that this version of Wonka is the most fun he’s ever been. Invoking some of what makes Frank Capra so brilliant, the film feels like a community coming together,...

90s Fraser as Star-Lord in fan art shows he would have been a great choice for the role, with his cool demeanor and comedic timing. Despite not being part of the MCU, Fraser has experience in superhero projects, such as playing Robotman in DC's Doom Patrol. We got The Mummy which gave us all the hot cast members we could ask for and still gives us memes, we got End of Days, Stigmata, Idle Hands, House on Haunted Hill, The Haunting, Stir of Echoes, and The Blair Witch Project. It was a year for surprising hits, shocking failures, and offbeat horror films. So many smaller budgets did so well. Dracula Untold 2 remains unconfirmed and unlikely due to budget issues and the failed Dark Universe franchise. The Mummy replaced Dracula Untold as the start of the Dark Universe, leading to the cancellation of other planned films. The success of The Invisible Man and the upcoming Renfield movie suggest a shift towards a more humorous tone for monster movies, impacting the potential for a dark and brooding Dracula Untold sequel.
Though Luke Evans was set up to carry on a new vampire franchise, the Dark Universe crumpled and Dracula Untold 2 may never happen. Dracula Untold started as a project dubbed Dracula: Year Zero, which told the origin story of the monster. Alex Proyas was set to direct while Sam Worthington (Avatar) would play the lead, but Universal canceled the project over budget issues (via IndieWire). After it was retooled, Gary Shore came on as director, while Evans signed up as Dracula.

One of the most recurring trends in Hollywood right now is the horror remake, and for better, or worse, it isn’t gonna disappear (pun intended) anytime soon. The Halloween franchise has been picked up by Miramax with the intention of creating a TV series, and a possible cinematic universe, and that’s just hot off the heels of Halloween Ends, erm, ending the recent trilogy with somewhat of a whimper. Michelle Yeoh's commitment to Star Trek: Section 31 is fueled by her love for the franchise and her childhood dreams of commanding her own ship. Winning an Oscar and being in high demand in Hollywood hasn't diminished Yeoh's passion for the character of Emperor Philippa Georgiou and the world of Star Trek. Yeoh's involvement in Section 31 is helping to bring much-needed representation for Asian actors and older women in the industry, aligning with her acceptance speech advocating for greater visibility.

The Dark Universe failed due to bad planning and lack of clear direction, causing confusion among potential directors and revealing poor franchise planning. Even if The Mummy had been successful, the Dark Universe would have struggled due to its poor planning and difficulty of sustaining a shared cinematic universe. While the Dark Universe concept may be dead, unrelated movies featuring Universal Monsters continue to be released, and modern remakes of the Universal Monsters are likely to rise again following the success of The Invisible Man.

After saying that he’d be very picky about his next role after winning an Oscar, Brendan Fraser has found it. He will star in “Rental Family” for Searchlight Pictures and from filmmaker Hikari, best known for her work on “Beef.”
Fraser in “Rental Family” will star as a down-and-out actor living in Tokyo who is hired as a token American guy for a Japanese rental family company providing professional stand-in services.
Hikari has been developing “Rental Family” since 2019, and she also co-wrote the film with Stephen Blahut. The film will begin principal photography this spring in Japan. No release date has been announced.
Eddie Vaisman and Julia Lebedev of Sight Unseen, which produced this year’s Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner “A Thousand and One,” are producing “Rental Family.” Hikari and Shin Yamaguchi, who produced her prior feature “37 Seconds” in 2019, will also produce. Despite generally avoiding sequels, Tom Cruise made two successful ones outside of the Mission: Impossible franchise: Top Gun and Jack Reacher. Top Gun: Maverick's box office success proved that Cruise can still dominate the blockbuster genre with the right story and cast. Recent films like Oblivion and The Mummy reboot weren't successful enough for sequels, except for a potential sequel to Edge of Tomorrow. Cruise prioritizes artistic integrity and pushing the story beyond mere regurgitation.

Renfield's disappointing box office results can be attributed to its high budget, which was much higher than typical smaller horror films. Mixed reviews from critics and audiences affected the film's performance, with general audiences opting for other movies in April 2023. The release timing of Renfield, just before the summer movie season, and the lack of a bigger franchise connection, contributed to its lackluster box office performance. However, the film may find success on streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video.
Renfield was released in April 2023 to a disappointing opening weekend, with various reasons contributing to the less-than-successful Renfield box office results. Initially, a film centered around Dracula and Renfield was pitched in 2014, with the failure of The Mummy in 2017 leading to the film being refocused as a horror-comedy. The Mummy was planned to be the start of a new cinematic universe of Universal monsters including Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, and Dracula.

A couple days ago, the Netflix streaming service unveiled the first trailer for Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire, the first part of director Zack Snyder’s two-part sci-fi epic, which they will be releasing on December 22nd. Now Netflix has also uploaded a video where Snyder spends almost 9 minutes breaking down the moments in the trailer. You can watch the trailer in the embed above, and check out Snyder’s trailer breakdown at the bottom of this article.
Snyder has always been open about the fact that he’s hoping “a massive IP and a universe that can be built out” from the foundation of Rebel Moon. He crafted the story for Rebel Moon with 300 co-writer Kurt Johnstad, and the pair wrote the screenplay with Army of the Dead co-writer Shay Hatten. The events of the two films, which draw inspiration from Seven Samurai, are set in...

Neil Burger confirms his Bride of Frankenstein remake is dead at Universal, despite being in development prior to the failed Dark Universe. Universal's attempt to create an interconnected franchise with their Classic Monsters was scrapped after the critical and commercial flop of The Mummy. Despite the setback, Universal saw success with standalone adaptations like The Invisible Man, which received acclaim and box office success.
As the studio's Classic Monsters library is undergoing a variety of new takes, Neil Burger reflects on his scrapped Bride of Frankenstein remake. The 1935 original movie acted as a sequel to Universal's horror classic, loosely based on a subplot in Mary Shelley's novel as both Henry Frankenstein and his monster are revealed to have survived, and the former is blackmailed into his old ways by his old mentor to create a mate for the latter. Just as acclaimed as its predecessor, if not better, multiple...

Tom Cruise's star power was evident in the success of the Mission Impossible franchise, but his ability to draw audiences was also apparent in the box office numbers of the critically panned film, The Mummy. The Mummy, despite being a critical failure, grossed a significant amount of money thanks to Tom Cruise's star power. The film's box office success underscores the impact that he has, regardless of the quality of the movie. Even Tom Cruise's star power couldn't have saved Universal's Dark Universe. The Mummy's flaws extended beyond Cruise's performance, and the ambitious cinematic universe would have likely crumbled even if the film had been a success.
Tom Cruise is one of the biggest and most profitable actors in the film industry, and curiously enough, one failed movie franchise proves his star power better than his two most popular franchises. Tom Cruise’s acting career started...

The ending of The Mummy (2017) sets up a shared universe team-up that never happened due to the film's box office flop and critical lashing. Nick stabbing himself with the Dagger of Set doesn't accomplish Ahmanet's plan because he resists and gains control of his own body and powers. Nick's transformation leaves him unsure of what he has become, with powers similar to Ahmanet but still uncertain about his alignment and future choices.
The ending of The Mummy (2017) gives Tom Cruise's Nick Morton the power of the Egyptian god of death, Set, setting up a shared universe team-up that never happened. While The Mummy (2017) was meant to kickstart Universal's Dark Universe before an McU-style crossover between universal monsters like The Invisible Man (to be played by Johnny Depp) and Frankenstein’s Monster (played by Javier Bardem), the box office flop and critical lashing of The Mummy ended those plans almost before they started.

Rachel Weisz's absence from The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was a surprise, as her role as Evie launched her career. Different stories have circulated about the recasting, including a suggestion that Weisz didn't want to play a character with an adult son. Maria Bello replaced Weisz as Evie in The Mummy 3, but faced challenges because fans were attached to Weisz's portrayal. Bello did a good job, but Weisz's absence was felt. A fourth Mummy movie is still possible, especially with Brendan Fraser's resurgence in popularity. Fans are hoping for Rachel Weisz to return as Evie, as there is potential for a fresh look at the characters later in life.

It’s more than prosthetics. More than the comeback. Brendan Fraser’s work as Charlie in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale” is a profound performance for the ages. The A-list star that brought us “The Mummy” and “Encino Man” goes above and beyond the calling of an actor, showcasing the vulnerability of a broken, 600-pound man. Like Aronofsky’s resurrection of Mickey Rourke in “The Wrestler” (2008), Fraser delivers one of the best performances of the year. “The Whale” will surely land him an Oscar nomination for best actor.
The drama is a stark, dour examination of regret and addiction, wrapped into the script written by Samuel D. Hunter, who adapts his play of the same name. Distributed by A24, “The Whale” tells the story of Charlie, an obese gay man who reconnects with his estranged 17-year-old daughter Ellie (played by Sadie Sink) after leaving her and her mother for his younger male lover.

Aside from being a rollicking, romantic romp, The Mummy (1999) has carved out an iconic place among movie lovers for what Tor.com’s Leah Schnelbach describes as its chaotic bisexual energy. Here is a movie with an ensemble cast whose combined hotness, sheer charisma, and bucking of gender and societal norms make it so that anyone can see themselves in a variety of characters—and perhaps make some breakthroughs in realizing who they’re attracted to.
As Maggie Tokuda-Hall summed up, “Hot people being horny on main; campy violence; himbos.” But while The Mummy is a unique modern classic, it’s not the only one to spark a bisexual awakening among fans: May I present its equally chaotic bisexual contemporary, Brian Helgeland’s delightful 2001 film, A Knight’s Tale.

If you were a person attracted to men born between the years 1980 and 2000, there is a very large chance that your sexual awakening came courtesy of Brendan Fraser. The actor, who got his start in the early 1990s boarding school drama School Ties, originated a certain type of wide-eyed, washboard-abbed himbo in the late 90s and early 2000s, appearing in such iconic films as Encino Man, George of the Jungle, Bedazzled, and The Mummy franchise.

There’s no better way to kick off Halloween season than with Universal Orlando’s always epic Halloween Horror Nights, which opened this past Thursday jam-packed with several new houses and scare zones infested with bugs, cursed by witches, and hunted down by chupacabras.
While I am a huge fan of local haunts, Halloween Horror Nights is the “blockbuster” event that every horror fan needs to experience at least once in their life. Hhn is more than just haunted houses, it’s a full-blown immersive experience that starts the second you walk through the entrance (check out over 75 killer treats) and ends at the exit. There’s quite literally nothing like it.
This year’s main event was The Weeknd: After Hours Nightmare, inspired by the singer’s After Hours album. The house is a nonstop assault of body horror that transforms The Weeknd into horrific characters of his own...

Actor Brendan Fraser, who is known for his work in films such as ‘George Of The Jungle and ‘The Mummy’ franchise, got teary eyed after his film ‘The Whale’ received a six-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival.
When the credits rolled on the Darren Aronofsky drama, in which Fraser plays a 600-pound gay man confined to a wheelchair, the actor was overcome with emotion.
Among those spotted inside the Sala Grande Theatre were Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Nick Kroll and Hillary Clinton staffer Huma Abedin, who was seated a few rows behind Fraser and shed as many tears as he did. Many others inside the theatre also broke out a handkerchief during the film’s heartbreaking final scenes, reports ‘Variety’.
Fraser hugged Aronofsky several times during the ovation. He tried to leave the theatre at one point, but the outpouring of clapping was so loud, he stayed longer and took a bow.

Brendan Fraser was so moved by the overwhelming reception and lengthy standing ovation his film “The Whale” received at its Venice Film Festival premiere Sunday that he wept.

After reaching a career high starring in “The Mummy” franchise and “George of the Jungle,” in many ways, some consider “The Whale” Fraser’s comeback moment that could quite possibly earn him an Oscar.

The return of Brendan Fraser — not that he ever really went away — has been a reminder of how much affection so many of us had for him back in the ’90s, when he had his moment in movies like “School Ties” and “Encino Man” and “Gods and Monsters” and “The Mummy.” Yet let’s be honest: This is not the comeback of John Travolta or Mickey Rourke. Fraser was always, in the best way, a lightweight actor: the clear blue eyes, the pin-up sexiness, the shaggy warm boyish innocence. The fact that, at 53, he’s no longer as beautiful as he once was is part of the Brendanaissance. He can no longer hold the screen as a cutie-pie hunk; he has to do it in other ways. And in “The Whale,” directed by Darren Aronofsky (who shepherded Rourke’s return in “The Wrestler”), Fraser is a better actor — slyer, subtler,...

Brendan Fraser has played plenty of big-screen heroes, ranging from “George of the Jungle” to Rick O’Connell in “The Mummy” movies, yet he believes his latest role — a severely obese man in “The Whale” — may be the most heroic character he’s ever played.

“It gave me an appreciation for those whose bodies are similar. I learned that you need to be an incredibly strong person, physically, mentally, to inhabit that being,” he said during a press conference at the Venice International Film Festival,...

As the 79th Venice Film Festival arrives at the halfway mark, a handful of titles are emerging as this year’s favorites, at least judged by the response of audiences and festival critics.
With just under a week to go before the Venice jury, under president Julianne Moore, crowns the 2022 Golden Lion winner on Sept.10, Todd Field’s Tár is lengths ahead of the festival pack. The bracing drama, a portrait of a driven, tyrannical classical composer and conductor who gets caught up in a #MeToo scandal — played by Cate Blanchett with a ferocious intensity that already has handicappers whispering “Oscar” — the film wowed critics and the Venice audience in equal measure.
The key talking point will be Blanchett’s astonishing performance — flinty, commandingly self-possessed and ever so slowly splintering under pressure,” wrote The Hollywood Reporter‘s chief film critic David Rooney in his rave review.

Dir: Darren Aronofsky; Starring: Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Samantha Morton
First seen masturbating as he watches online porn, Charlie (Brendan Fraser), the main character in The Whale, isn’t just morbidly obese; he is a lumbering leviathan of a man, so immensely fat that he can barely manoeuvre himself off his couch, let alone leave his apartment. He sweats profusely, vomits into dustbins and almost chokes on the junk food he gorges himself on. “Who would want me to be part of their life?” he asks plaintively toward the end of the film. Even his daughter calls him disgusting.
Darren Aronofsky’s film, a world premiere in competition in the Venice Film Festival this weekend, is stagy and mawkish. Watching it, you feel grossly manipulated but the approach is undeniably effective. Fourteen years ago, the same director came to Venice with his equally grungy and melodramatic The Wrestler,...

Brendan Fraser, the Hollywood leading man who largely disappeared from the big screen in recent years, landed on the Lido in Venice Sunday to discuss what’s already being tipped as a potential career comeback project, Darren Aronofsky‘s A24 film The Whale.
A vivid chamber piece about a reclusive 600-pound man struggling to find redemption, the film has received an enthusiastic response at its first Venice press screenings this weekend.
During the press conference ahead of the movie’s world premiere Sunday night, Fraser was asked where The Whale fits in with the various phases of his long career and the many characters he has inhabited over the years — beginning with early physical comedy roles like Encino Man (1992) and George of the Jungle (1997), extending to The Mummy franchise (1999-2008) and more dramatic turns in titles like Gods and Monsters (1998) and The Quiet American...

Brendan Fraser wanted to push his personal limits with his latest role in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale”, playing as part of this year’s TIFF.
In the film, “The Mummy” star transforms into Charlie, a severely obese man who is reeling from the loss of a lover all while attempting to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter (Sadie Sink).
For Fraser, “The Whale” marks his first major starring role in a decade and with it, the actor wanted to push himself beyond recognition. For the physical transformation, Fraser dons a prosthetic suit that he says took “his breath away” the first time he saw it.

In a time where the Internet has not been able to agree on anything, one thing has seemingly united everyone: Brendan Fraser. At the end of the 20th Century, Fraser was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, where he was able to match his matinee idol looks with a light-hearted, goofy persona that endeared him to millions most notably in "The Mummy" films. Once the 2000s rolled around, Fraser was on quite a losing streak. You had Harold Ramis' remake of "Bedazzled," the reviled Best Picture winner "Crash," the underrated but underperforming "Looney Tunes: Back in Action," and the grisly one-two punch of "Extraordinary Measures" and "Furry Vengeance" in 2010 basically cementing his time as a Hollywood leading man as over.
With "The Mummy" over 20 years in the rearview, those who grew up with those movies are now the loudest voices online and have been clamoring for a Fraser renaissance,...
