Stars: Robert Savakinus, Stephen Cognetti, Bridget Rose Perrotta, Destiny Leilani Brown, James Liddell | Written and Directed by Stephen Cognetti
When I reviewed Hell House LLC III: Lake of Fire, I said it seemed they had taken the franchise as far as it could go. Writer/director Stephen Cognetti seems to have had the same thought because, as you can probably tell from the title, Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor provides some backstory to the events at the hotel rather than being another extension of the saga.
In 1989 The Carmichael Manor was the scene of a baffling and brutal crime. Two members of the family were killed in their beds. The other two, father Arthur Carmichael (Robert Savakinus) and his son Patrick (Stephen Cognetti; The Hid) were missing. But there was only one set of footprints in the snow outside the house, presumably those of Arthur, who was thought to be the killer.

The first trailer for Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay has arrived, and it looks promising. That used to be something you wouldn't have to say about DC Animated Features, but they've been spotty as of late in my personal opinion so all I can say here is the trailer looks pretty damn good. The lineup of heroes is better than the live-action film, Tara Strong is voicing Harley, and the violence doesn't appear to be limited as Quinn just smacked the head off that frozen guy! Let's just hope Vandal Savage is more interesting this time around than he was in Legends of Tomorrow. Christian Slater also stars in the film as Deadshot!

Ok, so not everyone liked the Suicide Squad live-action movie (although on the scale of superhero movies it’s easily one of the better Dceu films), well now DC and Warner Bros. are making amends, sort of, with a brand new animated movie based on the misfit task force: Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay.
Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay finds Amanda Waller’s top secret Task Force X,’ Deadshot, Bronze Tiger, Killer Frost, Captain Boomerang, Harley Quinn and Copperhead, on a mission to retrieve a mystical object so powerful that they’re willing to risk their own lives to steal it. But the Suicide Squad isn’t the only group of villains seeking to possess the object. The race is on for the golden prize … and, to stay alive, second place isn’t an option.

Title: Copperhead Director: Ron Maxwell Starring: Billy Campbell, Angus Macfadyen, Augustus Prew, Lucy Boynton, Peter Fonda, Casey Thomas Brown Its title a slur for Northerners who opposed the American Civil War, “Copperhead” marks the third film from director Ron Maxwell (“Gettysburg,” “Gods and Generals”) about the United States’ bloodiest armed conflict. In theory, movies like this produced outside of the Hollywood system have the potential of some measure of additional freedom, being unburdened by casting dictates and endless studio notes that often polish down history’s rough edges. Unfortunately, in reality, Maxwell’s film is a drawn-out, schematic melodrama rife with somnambulistic speechifying, and a work every bit as turgid and baldly [ Read More ]

A Civil War movie without a battle scene is like…wait, what? A Civil War movie without a battle scene?! That is “Copperhead,” a sincere, slow-moving, occasionally successful film devoted to one specific homefront story. That, in itself, is noteworthy. After all, as many of the characters in Ron Maxwell’s film point out, in addition to the costs on the battlefield, there were many, many costs at home. Life carried on, uneasily, and as the war raged the number of fathers and sons who would return home upon its conclusion grew smaller and smaller. With such a stunning body count, it is not surprising to hear that there was a vocal minority against the conflict — including some Northerners. “Copperhead,” based on a novella by Harold Frederic—whose “Damnation of Theron Ware” F. Scott Fitzgerald called “the best American novel” written before 1920—is the third straight Civil War film for Maxwell,...

Once again revisiting the Civil War with Copperhead, director Ron Maxwell (Gettysburg, Gods and Generals) shows a flair for mythologizing via beautiful panoramas of upstate New York landscapes but less so, unfortunately, through his film's inert story and flat performances. Based on Harold Frederic's novel, Maxwell's tale concerns farmer Abner Beech (Billy Campbell), whose opposition to Lincoln's "unconstitutional war" inspires rebellion from son Jeff (Casey Thomas Brown) and local abolitionist Jee Hagadorn (Angus Macfadyen)—whose daughter, Esther (Lucy Boynton), is fancied by Jeff. The result is an unsuccessful balancing act: presenting man of principle Abner (nether pro-South nor pro-slavery) as a virtuous victim of discrimination despite resisting a war vi...

There are few moments in American history that so unforgettably changed the course of the nation, and the Civil War, over a hundred years on, continues to fascinate filmmakers, authors, scholars, historians and more. For director Ron Maxwell, he's dedicated a good part of his career to the subject, with two films -- "Gettysburg" and "Gods & Generals" -- already under his belt. And now, he's delivering his third film in his American Civil War anthology with "Copperhead," and we've got a new look at the movie. Based on the novel by Harold Frederic, the film stars Billy Campbell, Angus Macfadyen, Augustus Prew, and Peter Fonda and tells the story of Abner Beech, a dairy farmer and anti-Abolitionist in Upstate New York, who earns the titular sobriquet for his views on the war, which finds him divided from his neighbors. In this exclusive clip, we see Abner ponder the cost of...

The Civil War stories head north.
In Ronald F. Maxwell’s “Copperhead,” the indie Civil War drama looks into the conflicts between warmongers and pacifists in the North. Even in the upstate New York, families are not quite immune from the horrors of war as they fight amongst themselves.
Latino-Review conducted a phone interview with actor Augustus Prew last month for “Copperhead.” He discussed with us about the themes of the film, his role and the production with Maxwell in Canada. He also talked about his role in the upcoming movie “Kick-Ass 2.”
“Copperhead” is in theaters this weekend.
Read the full transcript below:
Latino-Review: What attracted you to “Copperhead” in the first place?
Augustus Prew: I thought the script is just fantastic. It’s very rare to read the script that doesn’t pander to the audience. It doesn’t dictate on who’s the goodie or the baddie.

Civil War period pieces are always a bit tricky, with filmmakers usually feeling the need to find a balance between education and entertainment. On one side of this scaled spectrum sits Glory, Cold Mountain, and more recently, Lincoln. On the other end, there’s the History Channel, with programmatic tendencies that are informational, but usually less entertaining. (Last year’s Hatfields & McCoys mini-series was the exception to the rule.) The new film Copperhead, adapted from Harold Frederic’s 1893 novel, The Copperhead, focuses on a largely untold story from the Civil War, but leans more toward TV docudrama than full-blown feature....

Director Ron Maxwell's "Copperhead," on VOD Friday, is the sixth Civil War-era film to debut in the past 12 months, the most earnest and straightforward in a burgeoning subgenre. Nearly 150 years after the Battle of Gettysburg, The War Between the States remains Hollywood's favorite war. Well, not exactly. Compared with the storms of steel that rage over huge chunks of modern World War II dramas (see the opening sequence of "Saving Private Ryan"), recent Civil War films tend to shy away from direct depictions of the fierce, internecine violence that characterized the conflict. Hollywood prefers the Civil War omnipresent but almost invisible, as though it took place on the dark side of the moon. It is much easier, I suppose, for American audiences to stomach their boys killing Nazis than killing each other. "Copperhead," a slight, talky picture, as chaste as a schoolhouse kiss, is emblematic of this absence. As...

Exclusive: ‘Gettysburg’ Director Ronald Maxwell Updates on ‘The Last Full Measure’ and ‘Belle Starr’
It’s been a decade since Civil War drama “Gods and Generals” was in the theaters. And that sequel followed the 1993 Civil War epic “Gettysburg.”
Will “The Last Full Measure” finally make it to the big screen after a long wait?
According to “Gettysburg” and “Gods & Generals” director Ronald F. Maxwell, Civil War fans may have to wait a little longer.
In an exclusive phone interview with Latino-Review, Maxwell carefully updated the status of adapting Jeffrey Shaara’s book about the Civil War after Gettysburg. He was promoting an indie Civil War film “Copperhead,” which is in select theaters later this week.
“I would love to do the third part of the trilogy. It’s a big movie like the other two, which is an epic genre,” he told Latino-Review. “The epic part is the time to tell the story. And it’s because it has to cover the [battles of] the...

Today we have the trailer and poster for the upcoming Ron Maxwell‘s (Gettysburg, Gods and Generals) Civil War-era movie Copperhead. Inspired by true events, it’s the story of Abner Beech, a dairy farmer in the North who opposes the war and is alienated because of his beliefs. Copperhead is unlike any Civil War movie to date. It is a film of the war at home – of a family ripped apart by war, of fathers set against sons and daughters, of a community driven to an appalling act of vengeance against a man who insists on exercising his right to free speech during wartime. A story...

With Game of Thrones‘ second season having just concluded, Kit “Jon Snow” Harington will do a little feature work before it’s back to sword-swinging across Westeros for him. There’s already a role in WB’s fantasy epic, The Seventh Son, getting underway, and ScreenDaily now reports that Harington will join Vera Farmiga for Greenland Time, an endeavor from writers and first-time directors David Newman & Catherine Linstrum; Sigma and Lars von Trier‘s Zentropa are producing.
A psychological thriller set in the titular country, Greenland Time follows a woman (Farmiga) trying to find the man (probably Harington) that ran over and killed her daughter in an accident. How does a standard set-up along those lines become psychological? We’ll have to tune in and find out for ourselves — right now, let’s just some credit to Harington on landing what, from the sound of it, might be a plum...

With it being inevitable that The Killing gets axed right around the end of its second season, this is the kind of news Billy Campbell could use — and it happens because Jason Patric sounds like an idiot! You never know how these things will fall into place. Right: Deadline reports that the former is stepping in for the latter on Copperhead, a new Civil War drama from director Ronald F.
