I rarely submit a review here on IMDB, but feel compelled to speak out on behalf of this quite good movie. Its early rating (with only 70 votes at the time of this review) is skewed horribly low. I can only attribute this to the fact that this U. S. summary refers to a "football" player, but it turns out to be "soccer." Thus, the unwarranted initial glut of 1-star ratings.
The Champion (aka El Campeon) is a great character study movie set against the backdrop of professional sports. The family relationships and influencers with their own self-serving interests make the viewer want to root for Diego to open his eyes and realize what's happening. The talented young superstar also has to deal with stardom/fandom that 20-year olds are ill-equipped to deal with emotionally. And, finally, the care and concern brought by his reluctant mentor, Alex, helps Diego quickly start his maturation process into adulthood.
If you are looking to watch a movie solely about sports, you may or may not like this one; but if you are looking for an interesting film about people, personality and growth, you will be in for a treat. This is worth watching.
