Aleksandr Grigoryev, a lieutenant stationed in a remote town in Ukraine, is instantly charmed by the beautiful Nina upon first seeing her at the local inn. Winning a bet against the pharmacist, who is well acquainted with the Stakhovskys (Nina's family), Aleksandr receives an invitation to the family manor, where not only he'll get to know Nina better, but also Lera, her cousin and a girl treated unkindly by fortune.
