You might expect that a man who has been doing production and set design on feature films for more than 30 years would be a bit jaded, and that earning a seventh Academy Award nomination for his work would be met with a shrug. But that’s not how it’s been for Nathan Crowley. Instead, the man who has made a career of being Christopher Nolan’s go-to production designer exudes joy and excitement while discussing his Oscar bid for Wicked on the eve of final voting on Feb. 11.
“I just wish we could do it all again,” asserts Crowley (watch his full Gold Derby interview above). When his interviewer expresses surprise at this declaration given that the usual feeling is one of relief, he assures, “I think we’ve all been spoiled, because nothing will live up to that experience. This article contains spoilers for Wicked (2024).
After seeing Wicked, the underrated Syfy's Tin Man is the perfect miniseries to watch for another interpretation of The Wizard of Oz. There are plenty of Wizard of Oz movies that reimagine the classic children's book by L. Frank Baum. There are even TV shows that have spun their own take on The Wizard of Oz, including Zelena in Once Upon a Time and NBC's Emerald City. Popular shows such as That's So Raven, Sesame Street, and Supernatural have had their own segments regarding The Wizard of Oz. There is no shortage of interpretations of this beloved story.
Tin Man is not a particularly popular adaptation of Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but it is a worthy one. Tin Man stars Zooey Deschanel and Adam Cumming in a three-part miniseries that aired on Syfy in 2007. The show is a...

Kristin Chenoweth originated the stage role of Glinda 20 years ago on Broadway, but now she has given her blessing to Ariana Grande to take over the role in the Wicked movie. There is even a cameo of Chenoweth in Wicked as a member of the Emerald City Players. In a meta moment, Chenoweth wanders through the crowd, encouraging everyone to sing, and stops to address Grande's Glinda directly. When Glinda goes to sing, Chenoweth covers her mouth with her hand, a nod to her own time as Glinda, a character who loved to have the spotlight.
While Chenoweth's musical cameo in Wicked was already exciting, the scene is actually so much better because it is not just a passing of the wand, but a musical reunion between Grande and Chenoweth. Almost a decade before Grande joined the cast of Wicked, she was in Hairspray Live!, which also starred Chenoweth,...

The following contains spoilers for Wicked: Part 1, now playing in theaters
The best change Wicked: Part 1 made to the original musical makes one of the original's more forgettable songs much more important. In many ways, the cinematic Wicked is a very faithful adaptation of the original musical. Jon M. Chu's reimagining of the Broadway smash doesn't change much about Wicked's cast of characters or their story, instead presenting it on the biggest stage possible. However, the film still had to make some tweaks to adjust the original for the big screen.
The biggest changes in Wicked from book to stage to screen largely improved the film, but that's especially true for one song in the film's latter half. The following contains spoilers for Wicked: Part 1, now playing in theatersWicked: Part 1's biggest cameo moments brings some major representation from the original musical to the big screen. Directed by Jon M. Chu and split into two parts, Wicked is the cinematic adaptation of Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman's Broadway musical of the same name. For the most part, Wicked's characters experience the same arcs and personalities that they did on stage, albeit with an extended focus courtesy of the medium shift to film. However, that love for the original Broadway musical is prevalent throughout the first movie, which faithfully recreates Act 1 in terms of plot, characters, and themes.
However, one clever change to Wicked's narrative actually serves as an ideal place to insert some big cameos without distracting from the rest of the plot. The musical even finds a way to give the cameos their own...

Are Elphaba and Glinda gay?
Since Wicked first debuted on Broadway, fans have been shipping the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North.
Their tense opposites-attract dynamic is all there. The song “What Is This Feeling?” begins almost as if describing a mutual schoolgirl crush.
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are weighing in on their characters’ sexualities. And so is the Og Wicked Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth.

Wicked is out in theaters. Even among Broadway musicals, Wicked has a particularly strong following within the LGBTQ+ community.
So it is only natural that Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba in the theatrical adaptation, and Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda, would chat with Gay Times on the topic.

In the world of television, the fantasy genre has proven to be one of the most successful types of on-screen stories, yet not every fantasy show gets the chance to rise to fame. Since the premiere of Game of Thrones in 2011, fantasy TV shows have been made a top priority for all networks and streaming services. Even over a decade later, showrunners are still trying to recreate the magic of the popular fantasy series. Yet, while some fantasy shows have reached amazing levels of success over the course of many seasons, other shows have unfortunately lost their footing.
A number of different problems may occur when a fantasy show doesn't live up to its potential. On one hand, the series may have been panned due to poor writing, poor acting, or just being a generally bad fantasy. Sometimes, this reality isn't necessarily the fault of the show, but is caused by a lack of funding.

“Wicked” may not arrive in theaters for another three weeks and change, but early reactions are already pouring in from film critics who screened it on October 30. And they’re all “wick-ed-ly” positive, as John Travolta might declare. “The world is not ready,” raves Variety’s Jazz Tangcay. Others agree with her, claiming it’s a “masterpiece” with a “stunning vision,” and claiming, “‘Wicked’ rocks, kids.”
Critics are also singling out director Jon M. Chu and lead actresses Cynthia Erivo (as Elphaba Thropp) and Ariana Grande (as Galinda Upland) for their work on the big budget movie musical, saying they “will blow you away.” Other cast members include Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, and Marissa Bode.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo star as Glinda and Elphaba, respectively, in the long-awaited film adaptation, set to release next month. Adria Arjona says she was destined for pop stardom. She dreamed of becoming the next Beyoncé or Britney Spears as she crisscrossed the Americas with her father, the Guatemalan singer Ricardo Arjona, watching him serenade audiences with Latin pop ballads. Her home became a hotel room. She jetted between tour dates and stood backstage cheering him on. There was only one thing missing from her supersized expectations:
“I can’t sing,” Arjona says. “So, that was not in the books for me.”
Instead, Arjona has paved her own path in Hollywood.

This show has been renewed for a sixth season, so the summer hiatus is a great time to dive into the FBI: Most Wanted cast and character guide and get to know who these people are.
A Small Cast, But A Big Change
Before getting into the cast guide, you should know that FBI: Most Wanted will rotate cast members during Season 6. This cost-saving measure means that different characters will be featured on each episode, with some missing each time.
This will impact a series like FBI: Most Wanted, which only has five regulars, far more than shows with big casts, as character disappearances will be noticeable.

Back in January, the news broke that a series based on Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' Eisner Award-winning comic book, Criminal, is in development for Amazon Prime Video, and the project has now added another lead cast member.
Joining Richard Jenkins as Ivan will be Adria Arjona as Greta Watson (they appear to have dropped a "t" from the character's first name for some reason).
This take on Greta is described as “a sharp-tongued top-level car thief and driver and the widowed mother of Angie. Ever since her husband died in a bank job gone bad, Greta has been battling with herself about how to escape the only life she’s ever known – and the only place she’s ever thrived. The problem is, she’s good at this. She’s looking for a big score, a lump of money she can use like a gun to shoot her and...

Adria Arjona and Glen Powell may have some very steamy scenes in “Hit Man,” but filming them was anything but sexy.
It all went wrong when they were shooting in a bathtub and someone added Dawn dish washing soap to the water. “That strips you of all your oils of your skin,” Arjona says on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “That’s used for baby ducks when there’s an oil spill for God’s sake. We soaked in this bathtub for an hour and I get out of the tub and all of a sudden I dry myself and I can’t bend my knees because I have no oils.”

Marco Polo, Emerald City, and Black Sails all tried to replicate the success of Game of Thrones but failed due to factors like high cost, mismatched genres, and lack of compelling characters. True Detective and Westworld showed promise as potential successors to Game of Thrones with their dark and intricate narratives, but couldn't maintain the same level of quality in subsequent seasons. The Witcher, Watchmen, The Wheel of Time, and Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power all had elements that could have made them successful, but none of them reached the same level of mainstream popularity as Game of Thrones. House of the Dragon remains to be seen if it can live up to the original series' legacy.
Ever since Game of Thrones managed to become the most talked about show on TV, every new big-budget television spectacle was lauded as “the next Game of Thrones” only to quietly fail.

Where to Watch Powered by HBO's Oz was a groundbreaking crime drama that revolutionized modern television with its explicit content and deep character studies. The success of Oz paved the way for other iconic HBO series like The Sopranos and The Wire, shaping the format and genre for decades to come. Despite its flaws, Oz's impact on premium television cannot be overstated, introducing LGBTQ+ themes and pushing boundaries in terms of sex, nudity, and realism in drama series.

Director Justin Simien expresses a strong desire to remake cult classic film The Wiz, envisioning a Black-centric universe with Quincy Jones music. In what’s a shockingly early first look, Universal brought “Wicked: Part One” to CinemaCon audiences.
The rough and unfinished footage opened with a young green witch trying to master her magical training and being told by instructor Michelle Yeoh she needs to harness her emotions. The footage was mixed in with the filmmakers talking about how and why they made the movie. We get solid looks at all the major cast members, including plenty of interaction between Erivo and Grande as the former has a complicated reaction to a gesture of friendship. “Maybe, some of us are just different.” We get a bit of grand dancing, Emerald City production values (nine million real tulips planted) and flying monkey action scenes.
The final montage of fantastical (and source-faithful) images are, of course, set to the chorus of “Defying Gravity.”

“We thought we’d give you a little taste of it,” said Universal Pictures boss about Wicked, which is in production in London with Jon Chu directing and Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the respective roles of Glinda and Elphaba.
The rough footage, which even some Uni execs haven’t seen, showed,
Elphaba getting trained by Michelle Yeoh’s Madame Morrible. The footage was a BTS reel too with Chu exclaiming “I knew what this movie would be” and how he always wanted to do it for the big screen. Chu said that Cynthia and Ariana came in and blew the roof off. “The chemistry between Ariana and Cynthia is real and palpable,” said producer Marc Platt. A lush production design better than Into the Woods and even Oz the Great and Powerful. To recreate Emerald City, Chu planted 9 million non-cgi tulips.

“The Cell” director Tarsem Singh is making his global comeback with his first Indian film, “Dear Jassi,” based on a true story with plot details being kept under wraps.
Singh made his name with visually dazzling fantasy films like “The Cell,” “Immortals” and “Mirror, Mirror” but has been mostly out of action since helming the single 10-episode season of NBC’s “Emerald City” in 2017. “Dear Jassi” will be his first feature since “Self/Less” in 2015.
“It’s my passion project,” Singh said of “Dear Jassi.” “I believe this is the right time for the world to see it. Such a strong story needs to be told.”
Singh said the synergy behind the film’s production made it possible.
“I had a great set of producers partnering with me on this film,” he said.
Postproduction is underway in Montreal after the film was shot in Punjab, India. The crew consists of a...

Even Star Wars superfans have been blown away by "Andor," which mixes intrigue, politics, rebellion, love, and loyalty into one striking and stunning series. The show, which wrapped up its first season Nov. 23, takes its name from Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna, who is first introduced as a rebel spy in "Rogue One."
"Andor" is a prequel, but the series from showrunner Tony Gilroy isn't just concerned with its title hero, whose journey focuses on his path to the center of the rebellion. The show is really about a sprawling network of people spread across a galaxy kept under the brutal fist of the Empire. We meet Bix, played by Adria Arjona, Cassian's friend who's just trying to scrape out a simple life. She has a deep bond with Cassian and his mother,...

This Star Wars: Andor article contains spoilers.
Andor takes Star Wars in a completely new direction than we’ve ever seen before. Cassian’s origin story opens not with talk of Jedi and Sith, or a civil war between the Empire and the Rebellion, but with a common crook who’s down on his luck and desperate. The opening minutes that play like a neo-noir crime thriller straight out of Blade Runner soon give way to a very grounded story about the folks you don’t normally see in a Star Wars movie, including the blue collar workers who keep the wheels turning on the Empire’s corporate interests. It’s on planets like Ferrix, Morlana One, and Kenari that we meet a whole new cast of characters, the people who shape Cassian’s past and help him become who he needs to be in Rogue One.

Another new “Star Wars” series has arrived on Disney+, but this one is different. “Andor” is set years before the events of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and follows the exploits of Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor, but in contrast to the previous live-action shows like “The Mandalorian” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” this is a decidedly grounded and gritty take on the “Star Wars” universe – and one completely devoid of Jedi and Sith and bounty hunters. In short, it’s a “Star Wars” story set in a new pocket of the universe, about real people struggling with the very real oppression of the Empire.
Luna anchors the ensemble but there’s an impressive cast of characters that show up in the first few episodes, and no doubt many more to come throughout the 12-episode first season. Check out our complete “Andor” cast and character guide below.

Next month, Disney+ will release the next "Star Wars" series, "Andor." This spy-centric prequel to the 2016 film "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" will show us how Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) became such a devoted member of the Rebellion, leading to his ultimate sacrifice for the cause.
With so many recent offerings in the "Star Wars" universe, it can be easy to forget the impact the original stories once had on us. But when you remember the specialness and magic of a galaxy far, far away, it can bring you right back to your first viewing, turning you into a child again. According to an interview with /Film's own Ryan Scott, Adria Arjona who plays Bix Caleen in "Andor," and her castmates weren't immune to their own feelings of fandom.
Despite the seriousness of "Andor," Arjona spoke about "this thing you feel when you're on a 'Star Wars' set," saying...
