Larry Saltzman isn’t a guitar teacher by trade — he’s a high-end session pro who’s toured with Simon and Garfunkel, played in Saturday Night Live‘s house band, and backed up artists from Jewel to Darlene Love to Celine Dion. But for the past decade or so, he’s been moonlighting as a tutor to A-list actors, most recently bringing Timothée Chalamet from near-zero guitar proficiency to the point where he was able to play for real as Bob Dylan in his Oscar-nominated A Complete Unknown performance — and...

If there was any doubt as to how Bob Dylan feels about Timothée Chalamet playing him in A Complete Unknown, it ended on Dec. 4, when the 83-year-old Nobel Prize-winning legend declared on X, “Timmy’s a brilliant actor so I’m sure he’s going to be completely believable as me. Or a younger me. Or some other me.”
Whichever version Chalamet conjures up — and it’s really a combination of all three — will not lack for preparation. The superstar actor, 28, has immersed himself in all things Dylan since first attaching himself to the project in 2019.
In the intervening five years (there were delays because of Covid-19 and the Hollywood strikes), Chalamet taught himself to play guitar and sing as Dylan. Which he does in Unknown — to revelatory effect. The Searchlight Pictures film leans heavily on Dylan’s repertoire, with Chalamet interpreting entire classics like “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “The...

Lady Gaga‘s “Bad Romance” inspired one of the best and trippiest music videos of all time. The director of the clip explained that it’s about people who are “kind of vampires.” Interestingly, “Bad Romance” didn’t manage to reach No. 1 in the United States — but it did inspire a Meryl Streep cover.
Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’ is about women being auctioned off
Francis Lawrence is a movie director responsible for popcorn flicks like I Am Legend and every Hunger Games movie except for the first one. Perhaps his most significant work is the music video for “Bad Romance.” While everyone can agree the clip is visually stunning, its plotline can be difficult to understand upon first viewing. During a 2010 interview with CBS News, Lawrence gave us his interpretation of “Bad Romance.”

Prime Video’s Fallout has been receiving largely positive reviews, along with critical praise for the performances in the series. Aaron Morten is one such face that the audience familiarized through the series. The actor plays the role of Maximus, an ally to Ella Purnell’s Lucy, in the series. Fans believe that Aaron Morten closely resembles disgraced actor Jonathan Majors and that he could replace Majors as the MCU’s Kang.
Aaron Morten in Prime Video’s Fallout
Disney fired Kang actor Majors following his guilty conviction on misdemeanor assault and harassment charges filed by his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. Marvel is looking to recast the role, with Colman Domingo and Jon Boyega being some of the names thrown around for the role.

Underrated movie musicals like The Last Five Years and Sing Street use music to convey realistic emotions and tell grounded stories. There are delightful musicals from Hollywood and other countries, like the UK, India, and Japan, that often go unnoticed. Films like Anna and the Apocalypse and Ricki and the Flash bring unique twists to the musical genre, combining elements of horror and comedy with catchy songs.
From the Golden Age classics to modern-day reimaginings, musicals have continued to fascinate Hollywood and the rest of the world. Still, some continue to be lesser known, even though they are must-watch cult favorites in their own right. These underrated movie musicals might include conventional genre entries, with the characters narrating their woes and desires with synchronized song-and-dance numbers, or more contemporary takes on the genre itself. In movies like Ricki and the Flash and Sing Street, the characters no longer sing like they’re performing on Broadway.

The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. The majority of Steven Soderbergh’s delicious new comedy “Let Them All Talk” occurs on a cruise ship crossing from New York to London. Amidst the mass of passengers onboard, we’re focused on four women: Alice Hughes (Meryl Streep), a fictional Pulitzer-Prize winning novelist, her two oldest friends, Roberta (Candice Bergen) and Susan (Dianne Wiest), and Alice’s zealous new literary agent (Gemma Chan). Simmering among these four women are countless secrets, resentments, and regrets — and somewhere across the Atlantic, all of them are bound to come to a boil.

“Are her bra straps dirty?” “When she goes to bed, where are those clothes? Do they fall on the floor? Does she care about them? How much do they cost? Does she hang them up?”
Those are all questions Ann Roth, whose work can next be seen on “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” set to be released Dec. 18, asks herself as she reads a script. And the 89-year-old Oscar- and Tony-winning and Emmy-nominated costume designer has been doing plenty of reading lately. She’s working on Universal’s adaptation of megahit musical “Wicked” and has A24 drama “Humans,” directed by Stephen Karam and based on his award-winning one-act play, due to bow next year.
Roth, who numbers some 130 film and television credits, has worked with Meryl Streep, George C. Wolfe, Scott Rudin, Sidney Lumet, Neil Simon, Mike Nichols and Todd Black — all of whom she considers friends, which, she says, is...

When life gives you lemons, er, quarantine, it’s best to at least try and make lemonade. That’s what Madonna and Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody are currently up to, as the pop star revealed via Instagram on Saturday. The pair appear to be working on a musically centered screenplay, according to the black-and-white video posted on Madge’s account. “When you’re stuck in a house with multiple injuries, what do you do?” she wrote. “Write a screenplay with Diablo Cody about…” and then a bunch of emojis alluding to the script being film- and music-related. Watch the video below.
The screenplay may even be about Madonna herself, as she is seen in the video describing her inimitable and iconic Jean-Paul Gaultier “Blonde Ambition” satin cone-bra look from her 1990 tour. “The garters were over the suit bottoms, right?” Cody asks. “Yeah,” Madonna says. “Straight pin-striped pants sit beneath the...

Jonathan Demme’s career was populated with a musical sensibility that bordered on spirituality, more obviously so in his many music documentaries and the definitive Stop Making Sense. His narrative films could stealthily incorporate a hum of music integral to the world he was presenting, as keenly observed as his character details. From Something Wild to Philadelphia to even Ricki and the Flash, Demme would use music to make his stories come alive in authentic ways. Rachel Getting Married, his late career masterpiece, has a musical language all its own, one that represents the film’s simmering grief and provides its necessary catharsis.

Director Richard Linklater broke ground with his 2014 coming-of-age film “Boyhood,” which unfolded across 12 years, filming every year, and went on to be nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Now, according to a new report from Collider, Linklater is in talks to direct another multi-year film — this time with stars Beanie Feldstein and Ben Platt.
Produced by longtime Linklater collaborator Ginger Sledge, and possibly with the involvement of producer Jason Blum and Blumhouse, the film will be an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award-nominated stage musical “Merrily We Roll Along.” Sondheim’s 1981 musical is based on the 1934 play of the same name by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, and it takes place across 20 years, with sources saying that Linklater will maintain fidelity to that timeline.

Exclusive: Voltage Pictures has boarded international sales on Tim Sutton’s upcoming thriller The Chain, which reunites the filmmaker with his Donnybrook stars Jamie Bell and Margaret Qualley. Both stars are in talks to join in addition to Colette‘s Denise Gough and Captain America: Civil War‘s Sebastian Stan.
Voltage president and COO Jonathan Deckter announced the news today.
The Chain, which Sutton adapted from Tobias Wolff’s award-winning short story of the same name, follows the story of a man’s daughter who is viciously attacked by a dog, setting off a chain of events that ends in unspeakable tragedy. This is the second feature-length adaption of Wolff’s literary work; his memoir This Boy’s Life was adapted into the hit feature film of the same name starring Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Barkin. Production on The Chain will start in April.
Producers are Rumble Films’ David Lancaster and Stephanie Wilcox. Deckter negotiated the deal with Jon Shiffman COO/CFO of Rumble Films on behalf of the producers. UTA will rep North American rights. Rumble Films also produced Sutton’s bare-knuckle pugilist pic Donnybrook which made its world premiere at last year’s Toronto Film Festival’s Platform Section, won the 2018 Fantastic Fest main competition and will be released by IFC Films in 2019.
“The incomparable Tobias Wolff is one of my favorite authors and we’re even bigger fans of Jamie Bell since working with him on the powerful feature Skin,” said Deckter. “We’re thrilled to partner with our friends at Rumble Films to bring Tim Sutton’s adaptation to audiences around the world. It ticks all the boxes for a strong, international commercial contender so we could not be happier to be representing The Chain,” Deckter continued.
The Chain is the latest film to be added to Voltage’s production and sales slate for Berlin. The company recently announced its new production Blackwing from writer David Loughery and its worldwide representation of the social media thriller Follow Me.
Bell who first rose to prominence in his debut role in Billy Elliot, most recently played Bryon Widner in Guy Nattiv’s skinhead redemption drama Skin, which won the Fipresci prize at Toronto and is set to open in the Panorama section at this year’s Berlin. He is repped by UTA and Artists Independent Management.
Two-time Olivier Award-winning actress Denise Gough’s film credits include Bleecker Street Media’s Colette opposite Keira Knightley and Dominic West and Lionsgate’s Juliet, Naked opposite Rose Byrne and Chris O’Dowd. Gough was nominated for Best Featured Actress in a Play at the 2018 Tony Awards for her role in Angels in America. She recently wrapped Monday and can next be seen in 20th Century Fox’s The Kid Who Would Be King, which is currently in release. Gough is repped by UTA and Independent Talent Group.
Stan’s credits include Jonathan Demme’s Ricki and the Flash, Ridley Scott’s The Martian and I, Tonya. Most recently, Stan starred opposite Nicole Kidman in Karyn Kusama’s Destroyer. He is repped by ICM Partners and Brookside Artist Management.
Qualley is best known for her role as Jill Garvey on the HBO series The Leftovers. Her film credits include Shane Black’s The Nice Guys and Maggie Bett’s Novitiate. Qualley will next star in the FX limited series Fosse/Verdon opposite Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams, premiering in the spring. She is repped by UTA and Management 360.

John and Matthew are watching every single live-action film starring Meryl Streep.
#49 —Ricki Randazzo, a rock singer who returns home to the family she abandoned.
Matthew: Throughout his eclectic and gloriously unpredictable career, the late Jonathan Demme paved the way for peak performances from actresses as disparate as Mary Steenburgen, Melanie Griffith, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jodie Foster, Oprah Winfrey, Kimberly Elise, Thandie Newton, Anne Hathaway, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Debra Winger. Like George Cukor before him, Demme was devoted to telling stories about women, which comprise the bulk of his narrative output. The director committed to shaping these narratives with the same heady, inquisitive vigor and nonjudgmental consideration that electrified all of his subjects, from Anthony Hopkins’ lip-licking Hannibal Lecter to David Byrne, who indelibly bopped around the stage in a business suit at least six sizes too big during Demme’s landmark concert documentary Stop Making Sense.

Today, 20th Century Fox opens Steve McQueen’s “Widows.” Budgeted at $40 million, its first-weekend projection is $20 million. That suggests a performance similar to several recent mid-budget studio releases like “Outlander” or “The Girl In The Spider’s Web,” most of which failed to make a significant dent (only “Night School” grossed over $50 million).
However, “Widows” stands apart: The director won Best Picture with “12 Years a Slave,” and star Viola Davis won Best Supporting Actress for “Fences.” It also has terrific advance reviews, prime festival placement, real awards possibilities — and its box office success would have a much greater impact on upcoming production decisions.
With roots in fine art, McQueen has made a big impact in a short time. His 2008 debut “Hunger” about Ira member Bobby Sands was a breakout role for Michael Fasssbender (though it did little domestic business). His sex addict drama “Shame,” again with Fassbender, did better but still very niche business.

In “Her Smell,” Elisabeth Moss tears into the role of Becky Something, a strung-out hellion indie rock star of the early ’90s, like an angry lioness ripping through a slab of raw meat. Just taking on the part of a rock ‘n’ roller represents a major change of pace for Moss, who has tended to play cautious and pensive characters. But in “Her Smell,” Moss doesn’t just “let loose”. She dives headfirst into crazy, abandoned, fuck-it-all grunge narcissism. She plays Becky as a walking train wreck of borderline personality disorder who has elevated herself into a theatrically self-destructive druggie dominatrix. Becky may be an unholy terror, but that doesn’t mean she’s not a star. The stardom and the rancid solipsism are two sides of the same spectacularly damaged coin, and Moss herself has the star quality, and the fearlessness, to pull that off.

Rest in peace, Charlotte Rae. The beloved Facts of Life and Diff’Rent Strokes star sadly died at age 92 in her La home on Sunday, Aug. 5, her rep confirmed to Entertainment Weekly. Charlotte had previously revealed that she had been diagnosed with bone cancer in April 2017. "Last Monday, I found out I have bone cancer. About seven years ago, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer — which is a miracle that they found it because usually, it’s too late. My mother, sister, and my uncle died of pancreatic cancer," the actress told People at the time. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) "After six months of chemotherapy, I was cancer-free. I lost my hair, but I had beautiful wigs. Nobody ever knew. So now, at the age of 91, I have to make up my mind. I’m not in any pain right now. I’m feeling so terrific and so glad to be above ground.

This article marks Part 20 of the 21-part Gold Derby series analyzing Meryl Streep at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at Meryl Streep’s nominations, the performances that competed with her at the Academy Award, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the contenders.
In 2015, more than a decade since their collaboration on “The Manchurian Candidate,” Meryl Streep and filmmaker Jonathan Demme reunited on what would prove the director’s final motion picture. “Ricki and the Flash”, written by another Oscar winner (Diablo Cody), cast Streep as a wannabe-rock star who abandoned her family to chase her dreams. She later returns home, hoping to reconcile, to a chilly reception.
While “Ricki and the Flash” has its passionate proponents, the film was greeted that August to a lukewarm critical reception and modest box office – Streep’s lowest-grossing live action feature in nearly a decade. Even more...

Stars: Jeff Daniels, Melanie Griffith, Ray Liotta, Dana Preu, Margaret Colin | Written by E. Max Frye | Directed by Jonathan Demme
Jonathan Demme was one of the great names of cinema lost in the terrible artistic purge of 2017. His last film of note might have been the forgettable Ricki and the Flash, but there was a period, between 1986’s Something Wild and Philadelphia in 1993 – via no less than Silence of the Lambs – when the director could do no wrong.
Something Wild begins with New York businessman Charlie Driggs (Jeff Daniels) making a mildly rebellious decision: he chooses to not pay for his restaurant meal. A beautiful stranger, Audrey (Melanie Griffith), calls him out. They argue. They connect. She invites (or possibly kidnaps) him to join her on a crazy road trip, heading south with no destination but the next motel, causing moderate chaos along the way. They’re not quite Bonnie and Clyde,...

Ryan Murphy’s upcoming Netflix series, The Politician, is eyeing Gwyneth Paltrow and Barbara Streisand for key roles...
Ryan Murphy, never one to be accused of having too few concurrent television projects, has procured a platform for yet another series. This time, Murphy’s work will manifest as an hour-long comedy, called The Politician, which has just landed a comfortable home for itself on Netflix.

The Politician, which had been the centre of a weeklong bidding war amongst streaming outlets such as Amazon and Hulu, will ultimately make its arrival as a Netflix series, reports Deadline. Already the recipient of a two-season straight-to-series order, The Politician is a collaborative creation of Murphy and regular colleagues, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, providing a bit of satirical spin and social commentary through the story of a wealthy Santa Barba-residing, Californian, named Payton, chronicling the character's burgeoning political aspirations.

Saturday Am Update: WB and New Line's Annabelle: Creation is off to an excellent start, bringing in an estimated $15 million on Friday (including $4 million from Thursday previews) on its way to a weekend around $35 million if not more. It's also great news for director David F. Sandberg who helmed last year's hit Lights Out for WB. That film went on to gross nearly $150 million worldwide on a budget under $5 million. The film received a "B" CinemaScore, matching the score for the first film. Open Road's The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature is performing even worse than expected, delivering an estimated $3 million on Friday. This is already shaping up to be the lowest opening for a film playing in over 4,000 theaters by a wide margin. Currently the worst opening for an opening that size belongs to The Emoji Movie with $24.5 million, but with the $9 million or so Nut Job 2 is...

Broadway has a bright new star, and his name is Ben Platt.
The 23-year-old L.A. native — movie fans may know him as Benji from Pitch Perfect — is currently playing to sold-out-crowds and earning rave reviews for his emotionally raw performance in Dear Evan Hansen, the new musical from composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (the lyricists for the Golden Globe-winning film La La Land).
The musical has now been nominated for nine Tony Awards, including best musical and — yes — lead actor in a musical for Platt.
