As part of the BMWFilms series, Powder Keg is one of several great short films commissioned by the car company. Inarritu is a fantastic director, and his genius shows through this gripping, action-packed car chase. What sets Inarritu's film apart from some of the other BMWfilms is the gritty detail, the harsh realism of what is being portrayed. The violence is not glamorized, nor the main character's plight as a photojournalist romanticized.
The Way of the Gun has a lot going for it. A great director, great actors (especially Benicio del Toro), great potential for the plot. Somehow, halfway through the movie though, it seems like the plot unravels and one starts to contemplate the holes in the plot---stemming from the intertwined relationships of the characters and the motives of everyone in the movie's interest in the baby to be born. However, it's a fun movie and the first half is very interesting and full of plot twists which make it worth watching. It just doesn't quite measure up to McQuarrie's best, "The Usual Suspects."
Generally, I am willing to give any movie a chance. But this movie just moved too slowly, was way too obscure and disjointed and could not hold my attention. I would never recommend it to someone else to watch. The video taped sequences moving the plot were interesting and the whole body-swapping and ensuing coincidences were somewhat compelling, but there was not enough build-up of suspense or cohesiveness to make me really care how it ended....I just hoped it would eventually end.
